There is no economist edition of Word for Mac. You use the standard Word app, and it handles most economics drafts well, from long prose to tables and tracked edits. Equations are the weak spot. This guide covers the everyday jobs with menu paths, the equation problem, and where Lazur can help.

## Quick answer

- Word for Mac handles long economics prose, tables and co-author edits well.
- Equations are the weak spot. In a 2014 study, untrained LaTeX users made fewer mistakes than expert Word users on equation-heavy text.
- Native LaTeX equation entry on Mac is unclear. Test one equation in your build before you rely on it.
- Use Review > Compare > Compare Documents to see exactly what a co-author changed.
- Office 2019 for Mac went read-only on July 13, 2026. Check your build with Word > About Microsoft Word.

## What economists do in Word for Mac

An economics draft usually combines a few kinds of work. You write long prose, paste tables from a spreadsheet, insert equations, add citations and receive edits from co-authors. Word covers all of these, although not equally well. No published survey measures how economists use Word on Mac, so the list below reflects common tasks, not measured habits.

- Long prose: sections, footnotes, page numbers and consistent headings.
- Tables: pasted from Excel or a statistics package, with numbered captions.
- Equations: regression models, estimators and the occasional proof.
- Citations: one reference list that matches the journal style.
- Co-author edits: tracked changes from one or more reviewers.
- Referee replies: a clean response letter next to the revised draft.

The rest of this guide takes these jobs one at a time. Each section gives the menu path, a worked example where it helps, and a mistake to avoid.

## Equations in Word for Mac: where it works and where it slows down

Word is fine for a few equations in a paper. It slows down when the text is mostly math. A 2014 study tested this with 40 volunteers. Each system had 10 expert and 10 novice users, and each group typeset texts within 30 minutes.

For long continuous text, Word was clearly better. For equation-heavy text, untrained LaTeX users made fewer mistakes and were more productive than expert Word users. The study also rated enjoyment. LaTeX users scored 5.2 and Word users scored 3.6.

This comes from a blog summary of the study. The exact speed and error counts sit in charts, and the summary did not include them. Treat the numbers as directional.

### Insert an equation on Mac

Put your cursor where the equation goes. Then choose Insert > Equation and pick a template, or type your own. Word builds the math as you type. For a regression line, a fraction or a sum, the built-in templates save time.

The full steps are in [how to insert an equation in Word on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/insert-an-equation-in-word).

### LaTeX-style equations on Mac: what the sources show

The facts are mixed. A Microsoft Q&A answer accepted in 2020 said there was no out-of-box way to enter LaTeX equations in Word for Mac. A commenter in that thread said a LaTeX option appeared in the ribbon up to version 16.31 and changed in 16.32. Microsoft did not confirm the comment.

Microsoft's support article on linear format equations says LaTeX-syntax math typing is new for Microsoft 365 subscribers. It does not name a platform or a date. So test before you build a workflow around it.

> **Test one equation first:** Do not rewrite a whole manuscript around LaTeX-style input until one test equation works in your copy. Check your build with Word > About Microsoft Word, then type a short test in a blank file.

If a journal asks for LaTeX source, keep your Word draft as the master file. Check the journal's author guidelines for accepted file types before you convert anything.

## Tables and captions: paste from Excel without losing the layout

Pasted tables are a common source of layout trouble in long drafts. The paste option decides how the table behaves later. Paste as a Word table when a co-author needs to edit the numbers. Paste as a picture only for a final copy you will not change.

Use Home > Paste > Paste Special to choose the format. Keep Source Formatting brings the spreadsheet look, which often needs cleanup. Match Destination Formatting uses your paper's font and spacing, so the table looks like the rest of the text.

### Add captions and cross-references

Select the table, then choose References > Insert Caption. Pick Table as the label and type a short title. Word numbers the caption for you. Then use Insert > Cross-reference to point to the table from the text.

Here is a worked case. Your paper has a summary statistics table and a main results table. You add an appendix table before them. With captions and cross-references, the numbers update after you refresh the fields. Without them, you renumber by hand and miss at least one mention.

## Track Changes and co-author edits in Word for Mac

Co-author edits are where Track Changes does its job. It records each insertion and deletion. Turn it on before the file leaves your desk. Press ⌘⇧E or choose Review > Track Changes. Each reviewer's edits show in a separate color, with a name on each mark.

![Person typing on a laptop while reviewing a shared document with co-author edits](https://images.lazur.app/content-images/role-app/economists-word/word-for-economists-on-mac-2-9bc37e.jpg)

### Compare two versions of a draft

A co-author sometimes sends a clean file with no tracked changes. Open your version first. Then choose Review > Compare > Compare Documents. Select your file as the Original and the co-author's file as the Revised. Click OK.

Word creates a new document with revision marks. Your original stays untouched. In Word 2019 for Mac, the detail settings sit under Tools > Track Changes > Compare Documents, behind a down arrow. Newer builds may differ, so read the dialog you see.

Say your file is named Draft_v7 and your co-author returns Draft_v7_JK. Compare with Draft_v7 as the Original. The result shows each text change your co-author made.

Name each file with a date or round number before you send it. A clear original keeps the comparison from pointing the wrong way.

> **Save before you compare:** Compare writes a new document, so your original is safe. Still, save a dated copy of your draft before a big round of edits.

## Citations and the reference list

Journals want one citation style. Word can manage that for you. Insert each reference with the citation tool, then build the list at the end. Word stores the sources, so you can switch the style later without retyping every reference.

Start with [how to insert a citation in Word on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/insert-a-citation-in-word). Then build the list with [how to create a bibliography in Word on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/create-a-bibliography-in-word).

Mixing typed references with Word citations creates duplicates. Pick one method for each paper, and keep it through every revision.

## Word for Mac version, read-only mode and updates

Your build decides what you can do. Open Word > About Microsoft Word to see yours. The current update package is version 16.114.4, build 26110224, released November 4, 2026. The two builds before it were 16.114.3 on October 27, 2026 and 16.114.2 on October 26, 2026.

Office 2019 for Mac is the version that changed. From July 13, 2026, its apps entered reduced functionality mode. An expiring certificate blocks license confirmation, so users can view and print but cannot edit, save or create documents.

Microsoft 365 for Mac is affected only if its build is below 16.83. Those users update through Help > Check for Updates. Office 2021 builds below 16.83 need the same update.

| Setup | Status after July 13, 2026 | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Office 2019 for Mac | Read-only: view and print only | Plan a move to Microsoft 365 |
| Microsoft 365 for Mac below 16.83 | Needs an update to keep editing | Help > Check for Updates |
| Office 2021 for Mac below 16.83 | Needs an update | Help > Check for Updates |
| Microsoft 365 for Mac at 16.83 or later | Not affected by this change | No action needed |

_Word for Mac status after the July 2026 change, per TidBITS_

> **Sources disagree on one number:** One source gave 16.82 as the cutoff, and TidBITS gives 16.83. Microsoft's own read-only page could not be checked for this guide. Confirm the threshold on Microsoft's update history page before a deadline.

If Word opens a file as read-only, check your build before you retype anything. A read-only file is easy to mistake for a damaged one.

## Microsoft 365 for Mac: plans and costs for economists

Microsoft 365 Personal is listed at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. It includes the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote desktop apps. It allows sign-in on 5 devices at once. Microsoft 365 Family is listed at $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year for 1 to 6 people.

Prices change, and third-party sites showed other offers that this guide did not check. Read the current figures on the Microsoft Store comparison page before you buy. A university or employer license may cover you, so ask before you pay.

## Dictation and technical terms at the cursor

Hold fn to dictate clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app. This suits prose, notes to a co-author and email. It does not suit equations, so type those with Insert > Equation.

Technical words often come out wrong in dictation. Add terms to the personal dictionary, such as difference-in-differences, instrumental variables and heteroskedasticity. Then they come out spelled the way you want.

Snippets hold text you reuse, such as a standard data source paragraph. Keep the wording in one place so every draft uses the same version.

## Research a method or source in the background

Research jobs run in Lazur's own Chrome tabs, through the Lazur for Chrome extension. Lazur returns a summary and a report. Use this for background reading, such as checking how a journal formats a table or finding the original source for a number.

Check each source yourself before you cite it. Lazur summarizes what it reads, and the claims still need checking against the paper itself.

## Mistakes that cost time in Word for Mac

- Keeping Track Changes off during a co-author round, then losing track of who changed what.
- Pasting tables as pictures, which blocks later edits to the numbers.
- Typing equations with plain carets and typed-out subscripts, which breaks on the next edit.
- Saving over a co-author's file instead of saving a new version.
- Comparing against the wrong original, so every change points the wrong way.
- Trusting a LaTeX-style equation before testing one in your build.
- Running Office 2019 past July 13, 2026, when it became read-only.

## A setup for an economics paper in Word for Mac

Set up the file before you write the first table. These steps take a few minutes and keep later edits smaller.

1. Check your build with Word > About Microsoft Word, then update through Help > Check for Updates if needed.
2. Apply heading styles to each section so navigation and the table of contents work.
3. Insert tables with References > Insert Caption, and point to them with Insert > Cross-reference.
4. Insert each equation with Insert > Equation, and test one LaTeX-style input first.
5. Turn on Track Changes with Review > Track Changes or ⌘⇧E before the file goes out.
6. Compare each returned draft with Review > Compare > Compare Documents.

The heading step is covered in [how to apply heading styles in Word on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/apply-heading-styles-in-word).

## Where Lazur fits in a Word session

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac. It lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘ to ask about anything on screen, and Lazur answers out loud. Ask where a command lives, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to do something, and Lazur guides you one click at a time.

Lazur does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. It is not a plugin or add-in for Word. You make each change. Lazur shows you where it goes and waits for each click.

## Next steps for your next draft

Open a blank Word file and try one job from this guide. Ask Lazur where Track Changes lives, then compare two short test files. Once the steps feel familiar, move to a live draft. Lazur runs on macOS, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Windows is planned, not available.

Download Lazur from [the download page](https://www.lazur.app/download). Compare plans on the [pricing page](https://www.lazur.app/pricing) before you commit.

## Sources and limits of this guide

No survey measured how economists use Word on Mac, so the job list is a working model. The equation comparison comes from a 2014 study of 40 volunteers, as summarized by a blog. The version facts come from Microsoft's update history and TidBITS.

Microsoft's own read-only page could not be reached for this guide. The Mac LaTeX question is unresolved in the sources. Test it in your copy before you rely on it.

## With Lazur

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask; it sees your screen, answers out loud, points at buttons and walks you through apps. Hold fn to dictate. Free for 3 days, then $18/month: https://www.lazur.app/download

- “Where do I compare my draft with my co-author's version?”: Lazur circles the Review tab and labels it. You then open Compare and choose Compare Documents yourself. (Points at it)
- “Where is Track Changes in this version of Word?”: Lazur circles the Review tab and labels Track Changes. You turn it on yourself.
- “Walk me through comparing my draft with my co-author's file.”: Lazur guides you one click at a time through Review > Compare > Compare Documents, waiting for each click.
- “Why did my table number change after I added a new table?”: Lazur looks at your screen, explains out loud what it sees, and names the likely cause, such as a caption that needs a refresh.
- “Dictate a paragraph on the sample period and the data source.”: Hold fn and speak. Clean, formatted text lands at your cursor, ready for you to edit.
- “Draft a short, polite reply to referee point two.”: Lazur drafts the reply as text you can edit and paste into your response letter. Check every claim against your paper.
- “Find the 2014 Word versus LaTeX study and summarize it.”: Research runs in Lazur's own Chrome tabs and returns a summary and a report. Verify each claim before you cite it.
- “Set a timer for my table cleanup, then remind me to save a copy.”: Timers and Apple Reminders work by voice. Lazur sets the timer and the reminder, so you keep your hands on the keyboard.
- “Which Word build am I on, and do I need an update?”: Lazur reads your screen, explains the build shown under Word > About Microsoft Word, and says what to do next.

## FAQ
