To track nurse CE hours for license renewal, keep one log with the date, provider, subject, and hours for every course. Save each certificate the day you get it, then report it through the path your state board names. Start with your board's rules, because subjects and reporting differ by state.

## Quick answer

- Keep one CE log with the date, provider, subject, and hours for every course.
- Read your board's renewal page first. Florida requires 24 hours in total, including four core subjects.
- Report on time. Florida says to report to CE Broker and not send certificates to the board.
- Use dated Apple Reminders for your renewal date and for any subject you still lack.
- Lazur can point at buttons, guide each click, read pages aloud, and draft emails. It does not click for you.

## What tracking state ce hours for renewal costs you

- **Time you cannot get back.** A late report turns a routine task into a rush. Florida's board says completed CE must be reported to CE Broker before renewal. A search for a missing certificate takes longer when you are short on time. I found no study that measures this time, so measure your own for a few weeks.
- **Paying for the wrong course.** A course that does not fit your board's subject list is money spent twice. Florida lists required subjects as separate requirements, so a general course does not fill a subject gap. Check the subject list on the board's page before you buy, not only the course description.
- **A lapse in your license.** A renewal that slips can stop you from working as an RN until it is fixed. The research behind this page does not cover late-renewal rules for every state. Read your board's late and reinstatement steps now, not in the deadline week.
- **Stress on a stretched workforce.** NCSBN's 2024 survey found about 41.5% of nurses who intended to leave cited stress and burnout as the root cause. Admin work does not cause burnout by itself. It does add to a load that is already heavy, so small systems help keep the admin from piling up.
- **Subscriptions you may not need.** CE Broker's Basic account is free, and its paid tiers are named on the nurse page without prices. Pay only if the free account does not meet your need. Check their pricing page first, because the page I opened does not list costs.

## Why it happens

1. **Each state sets its own rules.** Your state board decides the total hours, the required subjects, and how often each subject comes around. Florida combines 16 general hours with four core subjects. Other states use different numbers, so a tip from a colleague in another state may not fit yours.
2. **Subjects repeat on different cycles.** Florida's impairment course is required every other renewal. Domestic violence is required every third biennium. HIV/AIDS is a one-time requirement before your first renewal. A single running total cannot show these gaps, so a total alone can hide a missing subject.
3. **Reporting paths differ.** CE Broker's nurse page says completions go to a board automatically only when CE Broker is set up to send them there for that board. Otherwise you submit CE to the board through its approved process. Two boards can require two different workflows for the same course.
4. **Certificates land in many places.** A course can send a certificate to your email, a provider portal, a learning system at work, or a paper handout. None of these places knows about the others. Your own log is often the only place that brings them together, so it has to be kept on purpose.
5. **Exemptions still need paperwork.** Florida exempts nurses certified by an NCCA- or ABSNC-accredited specialty program from CE requirements. The exemption still has to be reported to the tracking system. It does not cover the 2-hour human trafficking course, so nurses who assume it covers everything can end up short.
6. **No single Mac tool does the job.** I found no CE Broker app for Mac, and the iPhone app's status conflicts across sources. Apple Reminders can hold dates, but it does not know your board's rules. The routine you keep matters more than any single app.

## How to fix it

- **Start from your board's page.** Open your state board's renewal page and read the total hours and required subjects. Save the page as a PDF in a new CE folder. Write the requirements as a short list at the top of a Word document, with the renewal deadline above it. This takes one sitting and gives you a target for every course you take.
- **Check the subject before you enroll.** Before you sign up for a course, compare its topic with the subject list on your board's page. A course that matches a required subject counts toward that subject. A general course counts toward general hours. Ask the provider to confirm the subject if the course title is unclear.
- **Log each course the day you finish.** Add a row to your Word log as soon as you finish a course. Waiting a week makes the date and hours harder to recall. Fill in the subject column every time, because the subject is what shows a gap.
- **Name certificates with one pattern.** Rename each certificate with the date, provider, subject, and hours, in the same order every time. A fixed pattern makes Finder search reliable. Press ⌘F in Finder and type the subject name to find everything in that group.
- **Report through the right path, on time.** Find out whether CE Broker sends completions to your board automatically. If it does, report completions in CE Broker before renewal. If it does not, submit through the board's approved process. Keep proof of each submission in your CE folder, and report soon after each course, not at the deadline.
- **Use dated reminders with repeat set to None.** In Reminders, set the renewal date and turn on the notification. Leave repeat set to None, so the reminder keeps coming back until you mark it complete. Add a separate reminder for each subject you still lack, set a few months before the deadline.
- **Ask for a missing certificate by email.** If a certificate is missing, ask the provider for a copy. Write a short request in Outlook that names the course, the date, and your name. Save the reply with the certificate in your CE folder. Lazur can draft this email if you ask, but you read and send it yourself.
- **Check your exemption once.** If you hold a specialty certification, look up your state's rule on exemptions. In Florida, an NCCA or ABSNC accredited specialty program can exempt you from CE, but you must report it. Save the confirmation with your renewal records, so you can show it if asked.
- **Save a copy of the rules page.** Boards change rules. Press ⌘P in Chrome, choose PDF, then Save as PDF to keep a dated copy of your board's requirements. When the rules change, save a new copy and note the change in your Word log.
- **Run a short monthly check.** On the same day each month, compare your log with your board's subject list. Look for missing subjects and for certificates that are not yet reported. A short check once a month catches gaps while there is still time to fix them.

Tracking CE hours is a small job that gets large near renewal. The hours sit in portals, inboxes, folders, and paper. You need one place that shows what you finished and what you still owe. This page covers that place, the rules behind it, and fixes you can use today for free.

## What CE tracking costs you right now

Admin work lands on a workforce under strain. The NCSBN 2024 survey found 39.9% of RNs and 41.3% of LPN/VNs intended to leave or retire within five years. Among nurses who intended to leave, apart from retirement, about 41.5% cited stress and burnout as the root cause. Tracking hours will not fix that, but a calm system takes one task off a full week.

## How long does CE tracking take?

I found no study that measures how long CE tracking takes, so no reliable average exists. Measure your own time for a few weeks instead. Write down each minute you spend finding, saving, or re-entering a certificate. Your own minutes will tell you more than any average would.

## Why state CE rules make tracking hard

Florida shows how fragmented renewal rules get. A Florida RN needs 16 general hours from state or nationally accredited sources. Each renewal also needs 2 hours on medical errors, 2 hours on Florida laws and rules, and 2 hours on human trafficking. Recognizing impairment adds 2 hours, required every other renewal.

Two more Florida rules show why one list is not enough. Domestic violence, 2 hours, is required every third biennium on top of the 24. HIV/AIDS, 1 hour, is a one-time requirement before your first renewal. Your total can look right while one subject is still missing.

| Requirement | Hours | How often |
| --- | --- | --- |
| General CE from accredited sources | 16 | Every renewal |
| Medical errors | 2 | Every renewal |
| Florida laws and rules | 2 | Every renewal |
| Human trafficking | 2 | Every renewal |
| Recognizing impairment | 2 | Every other renewal |
| Domestic violence (in addition to the 24) | 2 | Every third biennium |
| HIV/AIDS (in addition to the 24) | 1 | One time before first renewal |

## Where certificates go: your board, CE Broker, or your own file

Reporting and keeping records are two different jobs. Florida's board says completed CE must be reported to CE Broker before renewal. The same page says not to send certificates of completion to the Florida Board of Nursing. Keep your own copy either way.

CE Broker's nurse page says completions reach your board automatically only if CE Broker is set up to send them there for your board. If it is not, you submit CE directly to the board through its approved process. Find out which path your board uses before you upload anything.

> **Confirm before you pay:** Do not assume a course will count. Check the subject list and the reporting path on your board's own page before you buy a course or submit one.

## Build a CE log in Word in one sitting

Press ⌘N in Word for a blank document. Then choose Insert > Table and build a table with the columns below. Save the file in your CE folder. Before major edits, make a copy with File > Save As (⇧⌘S), so you keep the old version. See [Word for nurses on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/for/nurses/word) for more layouts.

- Date completed, so you can sort by renewal period
- Provider and course title, exactly as the certificate shows them
- Subject, using your board's labels such as medical errors or Florida laws
- Hours, as the certificate states them
- Certificate saved, with the file name you used
- Reported to the board or CE Broker, with the date

Here is a worked example. You finish a human trafficking course from a provider you trust. Log it under the human trafficking subject, with the date and the certificate file name. Do not count it as general hours. Florida lists its subjects as separate requirements, so each one needs its own entry.

## Save certificates in one searchable folder

In Finder, press ⇧⌘N to make a new folder. Name it CE and add one subfolder per renewal period. Save each certificate as a PDF with the date, provider, subject, and hours in the file name, using a pattern like YYYY-MM provider subject hours.

Press ⌘F in Finder to search by provider or subject. Search your Outlook inbox for 'certificate' or the provider's name, then drag the attachment into the folder. A folder you can search beats a pile of emails.

## Set reminders so renewal does not sneak up

Open Reminders and hover over a reminder. Click Edit Details, turn on Date under Date & Time, and set a date. Then open the repeat pop-up menu and pick a preset, or choose Custom. Apple's guide covers these steps on Mac.

For a renewal deadline, leave repeat set to None. Apple's guide says the notification keeps reappearing until you complete the reminder. That is what you want when a missed date is expensive.

- Renewal deadline, using the date your board lists
- One reminder for each subject you still lack, set a few months before the deadline
- A monthly check that compares your log with your board's subject list

## Mistakes nurses make when tracking CE hours

- Waiting until renewal week to report. Florida requires reporting before renewal, so late uploads leave you little room.
- Keeping certificates only in email. Search helps, but a folder and a log keep everything in one place.
- Sending certificates to the Florida board. The board's page says not to submit them there.
- Assuming a specialty certification ends every requirement. Florida exempts nurses with NCCA or ABSNC accredited specialty certification. You must still report the exemption, and it does not cover human trafficking.
- Logging hours without subjects. The total looks fine until a subject is missing in the last month.

## Where Lazur helps, and where it does not

Lazur is a voice assistant for your Mac. Hold ⌥ ⌘ to ask about anything on screen, and Lazur answers out loud. Ask where a button sits and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to do something and Lazur guides you one click at a time.

Lazur does not click buttons, edit files, or operate other apps for you. You still press each button and save each file. Lazur helps you find the right screen and read it aloud. Hold fn to dictate text at the cursor in any app, such as a new row in your Word log. See [pricing](https://www.lazur.app/pricing) for plans.

Research is the other useful piece. Lazur runs research in its own Chrome tabs through the Lazur for Chrome extension. It returns a summary and a report. Check that summary against your board's page before you rely on it, because the board's page is the source that counts.

Lazur listens and looks at your screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer you, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models. Certificates can hold personal details, so follow your employer's rules on what you share from work systems.

## Check CE Broker and your Mac tools before you commit

CE Broker's nurse page says a Basic account is free. It offers compliance tracking, a course history, and a list of requirements. Paid tiers exist, but the page I opened lists no prices. Check their pricing page before you pay for anything.

I found no CE Broker app for Mac. Sources also disagree about the iPhone app. One says it was removed, while another still shows it free. Search the App Store yourself before you install anything. On your Mac, use CE Broker in Chrome.

> **Save the rules page too:** Press ⌘P in Chrome, choose PDF, then Save as PDF. Keep the file in your CE folder. Boards change rules, and you will want the version you planned against.

## Next steps for your renewal

Open your board's renewal page today and save it as a PDF. Then build the Word log and the Finder folder. Set the reminders once you know your deadline. The first setup takes one sitting, and each new course after that takes a few minutes.

## With Lazur

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask; it sees your screen, answers out loud, points at buttons and walks you through apps. Hold fn to dictate. Free for 3 days, then $18/month: https://www.lazur.app/download

- “Where do I report this course?”: Lazur circles the report control on the course line and labels it, then waits while you click. (Points at it)
- “Where is the report button on this page?”: Lazur circles the button and labels it, then waits while you click.
- “What does this subject line mean on my board's page?”: Lazur reads the line out loud in plain words. Check it against the board's own text.
- “Walk me through uploading this certificate to CE Broker.”: Lazur guides you one click at a time and waits for each click before the next step.
- “Hold fn and dictate: Human trafficking, 2 hours, Florida, certificate saved.”: Lazur types the text at the cursor in Word or any other app you are using.
- “Draft an email asking my provider for a copy of my certificate.”: Lazur drafts the text. You read it, edit it, and send it yourself.
- “Look up my state board's CE subjects and summarize them.”: Lazur runs the research in its own Chrome tabs and returns a summary and a report. Check the board's page before you rely on it.
- “Remind me to check my renewal date next month.”: Lazur adds a reminder in Apple Reminders.

## A plan you can start this week

- **Day 1: Pull your board's rules.** Open your state board's renewal page in Chrome. Read the total hours and required subjects. Press ⌘P, choose PDF, then Save as PDF into a new CE folder. Write the subject list at the top of a Word document.
- **Day 2: Build the Word log.** Press ⌘N in Word and insert a table with Insert > Table. Add columns for date, provider, course, subject, hours, certificate saved, and reported. Enter every course you finished in the current renewal period.
- **Day 3: Make the folder.** In Finder, press ⇧⌘N and name the folder CE. Add a subfolder for each renewal period. Move existing certificates in and rename them with the date, provider, subject, and hours.
- **Day 4: Check the reporting path.** Look up whether CE Broker sends completions to your board automatically. If it does, create or sign in to a free Basic account in Chrome. Report any finished course that has not reached your board yet.
- **Day 5: Set reminders.** Open Reminders. Hover over a reminder, click Edit Details, turn on Date under Date & Time, and set the renewal date. Leave repeat set to None so it keeps reappearing until you complete it.
- **Weekly: Log new courses.** Each time you finish a course, add a row to the Word log and save the certificate to the CE folder. If a certificate is missing, ask the provider for a copy by email. Keep the request and the reply together.
- **Monthly: Run a short check.** On the same day each month, compare the log with your board's subject list. Add a reminder for any subject you still lack. Ask Lazur to explain any board wording you do not follow.

## FAQ

### Is there a CE Broker app for Mac?

I found no CE Broker app for Mac. The iPhone app's status conflicts across sources, so check the App Store yourself. On your Mac, use CE Broker in Chrome. CE Broker's nurse page says a free Basic account tracks compliance and course history.

### Do I have to send my certificates to my board?

It depends on your state. Florida's board says not to submit certificates to the board, and to report CE to CE Broker before renewal. Other boards may use a direct process. Read your board's page and keep your own copy either way.

### What if CE Broker does not send my completions to my board?

CE Broker's nurse page says you must submit CE directly to the board through its approved process. Look for that process on your board's site. Save proof of each submission to your CE folder.

### Does CE Broker cost money?

A Basic account is free and includes compliance tracking, a course history, and a list of requirements. The page names paid tiers but lists no prices. Check their pricing page before you pay anything.

### Can Lazur track my CE hours for me?

Lazur can explain your board's page, point at the report button, guide you through each click, and draft a request email. It does not click buttons or submit CE for you. Your log stays in files you control.

### How many CE hours does a Florida RN need?

The Florida Board of Nursing lists 16 general hours, plus 2 hours each on medical errors, Florida laws and rules, and human trafficking. Recognizing impairment is 2 hours, required every other renewal. The four core subjects plus general hours total 24.

### What if I hold a specialty certification?

In Florida, NCCA or ABSNC accredited specialty certification can exempt you from CE, but you must report the exemption. It does not cover the human trafficking course. Other states may treat specialty certification differently, so check your own board.

### What if I miss my renewal deadline?

The research behind this page does not cover late-renewal rules for every state. Check your board's renewal page for late and reinstatement steps. Contact the board if the page does not answer your question.

### Does Lazur send my screen or audio anywhere?

Lazur listens and looks only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer you, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models. Follow your employer's rules on work systems.
