Open your document in Chrome or Safari and go to Insert > Page elements > Page number, then pick where the number should sit. If that option is missing, the document is probably in Pageless format, and you need to switch it to Pages format first.

## Quick answer

- Go to Insert > Page elements > Page number, then pick a placement for the number.
- Use the footer for most documents. Press Ctrl ⌘ O, then F to move there quickly.
- Page count adds the total number of pages. Type Page and of yourself to build Page X of Y.
- If you see no numbers, switch from Pageless to Pages format with Format > Switch to Pages format.
- To start later or limit numbers to some pages, use Insert > Page elements > Page number > More options.

Applies to: Google Docs in Chrome or Safari on macOS, Pages format documents. Time: 3 min. Difficulty: Easy.

## What you need

- A Google account with edit access to the document
- The document open in Chrome or Safari on your Mac
- The document set to Pages format, not Pageless

## How to Add page numbers in Google Docs on Mac in Google Docs on a Mac

1. **Open the document in Chrome or Safari.** Open Google Docs in your browser and open the file you want to number. Use Chrome or Safari on your Mac. The web editor is the one these steps describe. Tip: Chrome is the safer choice if you plan to work offline.
2. **Confirm you are in Pages format.** (File > Page setup) Look at the top of the page. Separate sheets with gaps mean Pages format. If the page looks like one continuous column, open File > Page setup, select Pages, and click OK. Tip: Pageless hides page numbers, so this check saves time.
3. **Open the Page number submenu.** (Insert > Page elements > Page number) Shortcut: Ctrl ⌥ I. Click Insert in the menu bar, then Page elements, then Page number. The submenu lists your placement choices and the Page count and More options entries. Tip: Ctrl ⌥ I opens the Insert menu from the keyboard.
4. **Pick a placement.** Shortcut: Ctrl ⌘ O, then F. Choose a placement for the number, such as the top or the bottom of the page. The number then appears in the header or footer area and repeats on each page unless you limit it. Tip: Ctrl ⌘ O, then F moves you straight to the footer.
5. **Insert Page count for Page X of Y.** (Insert > Page elements > Page count) Click in the footer where you want the total. Then choose Insert > Page elements > Page count. Type Page and of around the numbers, as described in the section above. Tip: Insert Page number first, then type of, then Page count.
6. **Limit or start numbering, if needed.** (Insert > Page elements > Page number > More options) Choose Insert > Page elements > Page number > More options. Under Apply to, pick the pages or section where the change applies. Click Apply. Tip: If Apply to is missing, add a section break first, then open More options again.
7. **Scroll through and check.** Look at the first page, the last page and each section break. Make sure the numbers count up in the order you expect. Fix any gaps before you share or print. Tip: A quick scroll is the fastest way to spot numbering errors.

## Before you start: confirm the document is in Pages format

Page numbers only work in Pages format. Google's help page says the document must be in Pages format to use the feature, and Pageless is not supported. Pageless is one long continuous layout with no sheet breaks. It is handy for long drafts on screen, but it cannot show page numbers.

To check, look at the top edge of your page. Pages format shows separate sheets with gaps between them. A document with no gaps between sheets is usually in Pageless format. Switch it before you go further.

> **Quick check:** If the page looks like one long column, go to File > Page setup. Select Pages at the top, click OK, and then add your numbers.

## How to add page numbers in Google Docs on Mac, step by step

The main route is Insert > Page elements > Page number. Google's help page describes this path for the web editor, the version you use in Chrome or Safari on a Mac. I could not open the live editor while writing this, so match the labels to what you see on your screen. Google's help pages do not list app version numbers, so small label changes are possible.

The Page number submenu does three jobs. Page number puts a number where you choose. Page count inserts the total number of pages at the cursor. More options opens controls for which pages get numbers and how the number lines up. You can use each one on its own, or combine them.

## Pick the header or the footer, and use shortcuts to get there

Most people put page numbers in the footer, at the bottom of the page. A header at the top works too, and reports often use it. Google's shortcut help page gives you a fast way into either area on Mac. Press Ctrl ⌘ O, then F to move to the footer. Press Ctrl ⌘ O, then H to move to the header.

| Goal | Where to go in the menu | Mac shortcut |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Number at the bottom of the page | Insert > Page elements > Page number, then a placement near the bottom | Ctrl ⌘ O, then F for the footer |
| Number at the top of the page | Insert > Page elements > Page number, then a placement near the top | Ctrl ⌘ O, then H for the header |
| Total pages in the footer | Insert > Page elements > Page count | None listed |
| Numbers on some pages only | Insert > Page elements > Page number > More options | None listed |

_Page numbering tasks and where each one lives in the Google Docs menu._

Google's shortcut list does not include a key for inserting a page number. Use the menu for that step. The shortcuts only move your cursor to the right area.

## Show Page X of Y with Page count

Page count inserts the total, but it does not type the words around it. To build Page X of Y, click in the footer and type Page and a space. Then choose Insert > Page elements > Page number. Type a space, the word of, and another space. Finally choose Insert > Page elements > Page count.

Page count reads the total when you insert it. Google's help page does not explain how the total updates after big edits. Scroll to the last page and check the footer after you add or remove sections.

## Start numbering at a later page or in one section

Google's help page covers this under More options. Open Insert > Page elements > Page number > More options. Under Apply to, choose the pages or section where the change should apply. Click Apply to save it.

If Apply to is missing, Google's help page says to add a section break first. Put the cursor where the new numbering should begin, add the break, and then reopen More options.

> **Settings you may see online:** Some third-party guides mention a Show on first page box and a Start at field. I could not confirm either one on Google's help page. Check the More options dialog for what your version shows, and do not rely on a setting you cannot find.

## Why page numbers disappear, and how to bring them back

Pageless format hides headers, footers and page numbers. Google's page setup help page says headers, footers and watermarks are hidden in Pageless. They reappear when you switch back to Pages.

To switch, go to Format > Switch to Pages format. Google also offers File > Page setup. Select Pages at the top of that dialog, then click OK. The Format menu switch replaced the older File method in January 2024, according to 9to5Google, so it is the shorter route today.

## Keyboard shortcuts for headers, footers and footnotes on Mac

Google's keyboard shortcut help page lists ⌘ / for the full list. It does not list a shortcut for page numbers, so expect to use the menu for that part. The shortcuts that do exist help you reach the header, the footer or a footnote quickly.

Watch out for ⌘ ⌥ F. It inserts a footnote, not a page number. If you press it by mistake, press ⌘ Z to undo.

## Common mistakes that cost people time

- Trying to add numbers in Pageless format, then assuming Google Docs is broken.
- Typing numbers by hand. Typed numbers stay put when pages move, so use Page number instead.
- Typing the number into the body text instead of the footer. Body text moves as you edit, so the number drifts.
- Changing numbering without checking Apply to, so the change hits more pages than you meant.
- Looking for a shortcut for the Page number menu. Google's list does not have one, so use the menu path.

## Offline work and which browsers to use on Mac

Google's offline help page says offline editing needs Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. It also says private browsing does not work, and it names the Google Docs Offline Chrome extension. Safari is not on that list, so if you normally work in Safari, switch to Chrome before you go offline.

To turn on offline access, open Google Drive, click Settings at the top right, then click Settings again and turn on Offline. You can also open the document, click the status icon next to the title, and select Turn on.

## Check the result before you print or share

Scroll through the whole document once. Check the first page, the last page and each section break. If the numbers restart where you did not expect, a section break is probably in the wrong place.

Look at the first page too. Some documents open with a title page that should carry no number. Use More options and Apply to to limit the numbers to the pages you want.

## Where Lazur fits in while you work

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac. Hold ⌥ ⌘ to ask about anything on screen, and it answers out loud. Ask where the Page number option is, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it on your screen.

Ask how to do the job, and Lazur guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click. It does not click for you or change the file. You still make every change, and Lazur points you to the next menu.

If you want more help with Google Docs on Mac, see [Lazur for Google Docs on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/apps/google-docs). It covers voice help, shortcuts and dictation in your browser.

## Shortcuts

- Open the full keyboard shortcut list: ⌘ /
- Insert or move to the header: Ctrl ⌘ O, then H
- Insert or move to the footer: Ctrl ⌘ O, then F
- Insert a footnote (not a page number): ⌘ ⌥ F
- Open the Insert menu: Ctrl ⌥ I
- Insert a page number: Menu only

## If it does not work

- **Page number options are missing from the Insert menu** Your document is probably in Pageless format. Open File > Page setup, select Pages at the top, click OK, then open Insert > Page elements > Page number again.
- **Page numbers vanish after you turn on Pageless** Pageless hides headers, footers and page numbers. Use Format > Switch to Pages format. They reappear when you switch back to Pages.
- **Numbering restarts in every section** Open Insert > Page elements > Page number > More options and set Apply to. If that option is missing, add a section break first, as Google's help page suggests.
- **A number shows on the first page and you want it gone** Check More options for a first-page setting. I could not confirm one on Google's help page, so you can also use Apply to to pick only the pages that should carry numbers.
- **A keyboard shortcut for page numbers does not work** Google's shortcut list has no key for page numbers. Use Insert > Page elements > Page number. Press ⌘ / to check the full list of shortcuts.

## With Lazur

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask; it sees your screen, answers out loud, points at buttons and walks you through apps. Hold fn to dictate. Free for 3 days, then $18/month: https://www.lazur.app/download

## FAQ

### Is there a keyboard shortcut for page numbers in Google Docs on Mac?

Google's keyboard shortcut help page does not list one. Use Insert > Page elements > Page number. The shortcuts Ctrl ⌘ O, then F and Ctrl ⌘ O, then H get you to the footer or header quickly.

### Why don't I see page numbers after I insert them?

Your document may be in Pageless format, which hides headers, footers and page numbers. Use Format > Switch to Pages format, then check the page again.

### Can I start page numbers on page 3 or in one section only?

Yes. Google's help page says to use Insert > Page elements > Page number > More options, then set Apply to. If Apply to is missing, add a section break first and try again.

### Does this work in Safari on a Mac?

The steps are the same in Chrome or Safari on a Mac, because Google Docs runs in the browser. For offline work, Google's help page names Chrome or Edge, so use Chrome for that.

### Is there a separate Google Docs app for Mac?

I could not confirm a separate Mac app in the Google help pages I checked, so these steps use the browser editor. If you see a different app on your Mac, check Google's help center for its steps.

### What if a page number shows on the first page?

Check More options for a first-page setting. Some third-party guides mention one, but I could not confirm it on Google's help page. If you cannot find it, use Apply to to choose the pages that get numbers.

### Can Lazur add the page numbers for me?

No. Lazur points at menu items, circles buttons on your screen and guides you one click at a time. It does not click for you, so you still make each change.
