To create a toggle in Notion on Mac, type > and a space at the start of an empty line, type /toggle and choose Toggle list, or press ⌘⌥7. All three make the same toggle list block, and you can convert an existing block into one from its ⋮⋮ handle.

## Quick answer

- Type > and a space at the start of an empty line to make a toggle list.
- Or type /toggle, or pick Toggle list under Basic blocks in the block menu.
- Press ⌘⌥7 (Command, Option, and 7) on an empty line to make one from the keyboard.
- To convert an existing block, click its ⋮⋮ handle, choose Turn into, then Toggle list.
- Toggles open and close by hand. Notion has no setting to make them open or closed by default.

Applies to: Notion desktop app for macOS 13 Ventura or later. Time: 3 min. Difficulty: Easy.

## What you need

- Notion desktop app for Mac, macOS 13 Ventura or later
- A Notion page you can edit
- Keyboard with Command, Option, and 7 keys for the shortcut route

## How to Create a toggle list in Notion on Mac in Notion on a Mac

1. **Open your page and find an empty line.** Open the Notion desktop app and go to the page where you want the toggle. Click an empty line. If the line already has text, press Return to start a fresh line below it. The toggle appears where the cursor sits.
2. **Route 1: type > and a space.** Shortcut: > then Space. Type the greater than sign, >, at the start of the empty line. Press Space. The line turns into a toggle list. Type the title you want to show while the toggle is closed. Tip: The space triggers the change. Without it, the > stays a plain character.
3. **Route 2: choose Toggle list in the block menu.** (Type / > Basic blocks > Toggle list) Type /toggle on an empty line and press Return. If you prefer to browse, type a single / and scroll to Basic blocks, then choose Toggle list. Tip: Hover over a new line to see a + icon. It opens the same content type menu.
4. **Route 3: press the keyboard shortcut.** Shortcut: ⌘⌥7. On an empty line, hold Command and Option, then press 7. The line becomes a toggle list. It is the same block the slash command creates. Tip: If the line does not change, use /toggle. Confirm the shortcut once in your copy of the app.
5. **Convert a block you already wrote.** (⋮⋮ handle > Turn into > Toggle list) Hover over the line. Click the ⋮⋮ handle that appears in the left margin. Choose Turn into, then pick Toggle list. Tip: The handle sits in the left margin of the page, not in the Mac menu bar.
6. **Open the toggle and add content.** Shortcut: ⌘↩. Click the small arrow beside the toggle title to open it. Type content under the title while the toggle is open. To open or close the selected toggle item from the keyboard, press Command + Return. Tip: ⌘⌥T expands or closes all toggles in the list at once.

Notion's help pages do not list a menu bar path for making a toggle on Mac. Every method below happens on the page itself. You use the block menu, a little Markdown, or the keyboard.

## Check your Mac and Notion version first

The Notion desktop app needs macOS 13 or later, according to Notion's system requirements page. To check your version, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Notion 7.38.1 was the last desktop update that supported macOS 12 Monterey, so an older Mac can only go that far. For the full check, read [how to check system requirements in Notion](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/check-system-requirements-in-notion).

No app yet? Go to notion.com/desktop and click Download for macOS. Open the downloaded file, follow the install steps, then open Notion and log in with your email. The full walk through lives in [how to install the Notion desktop app on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/install-the-desktop-app-in-notion).

## Method 1: Type > and a space

This is the fastest route if you already write in Markdown. Click an empty line at the start of a page. Type the greater than sign, >, then press Space. The line turns into a toggle list as soon as the space lands. Type the title you want to show when the toggle is closed.

The space does the work. A > typed in the middle of a sentence is just a character. The trigger only works at the start of a line, so check the line position before you try again.

## Method 2: Use the /toggle slash command

Click an empty line and type /toggle. The block menu opens with the matching option, and pressing Return picks it. If you would rather browse, type a single / and scroll to Basic blocks. Toggle list sits in that group. Choose it, and the line becomes a toggle.

You can also hover over a new line. A + icon appears. Click it to open the same content type menu, then choose Toggle list. Notion's writing basics page describes both the / menu and the + icon.

## Method 3: Press Command + Option + 7

Notion's keyboard shortcuts page lists the toggle list shortcut as cmd/ctrl + option/shift + 7. On a Mac, that means Command + Option + 7, written ⌘⌥7. Put your cursor on an empty line and press all three keys together. The line changes into a toggle list.

No source in this guide tested the shortcut on a Mac, so confirm it once in your copy of the app. If it does nothing, use /toggle instead. The Windows version is Ctrl + Shift + 7, and Notion warns that Ctrl + Shift may already be bound there.

## Turn a block you already wrote into a toggle

Sometimes the text is already on the page. Hover over the line and a ⋮⋮ drag handle appears in the left margin. Click it, choose Turn into, then pick Toggle list. The block becomes a toggle list. Turn into changes one block type into another, so the same menu lets you change it back.

| Method | Where you do it | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Type > then Space | Empty line at the start of a line | People who write in Markdown |
| Type /toggle | Block menu under Basic blocks | Finding the option without memorizing keys |
| ⌘⌥7 | Empty line, keyboard only | Repeat use from the keyboard |
| ⋮⋮ then Turn into | Existing block, via the left margin | Changing text you already wrote |

_Four routes to a toggle list in Notion on Mac._

Pick the route that matches what you are doing. People who write fast in Markdown stay with > and a space. People who prefer the keyboard use ⌘⌥7. People fixing text they already wrote use the drag handle.

## Open, close, and fill a toggle

Click the small arrow beside the toggle title to open it. Click it again to close. Anything you type under the title sits inside the toggle while it is open. Keep the lines under each title short so the toggle stays easy to scan.

The keyboard does the same job. Select a toggle item and press ⌘↩, which is Command + Return, to open or close it. To act on the whole list, press ⌘⌥T, which is Command + Option + T. It expands or closes all toggles in that toggle list.

## What toggles cannot do in Notion

Toggle lists open and close by hand. Notion's writing basics page says there is no way to open and close them all at once, or to make them open or closed by default. The ⌘⌥T shortcut does expand or close every toggle in a list, so a bulk action exists. It is a keypress, though, not a saved setting.

Plan for this if you share a page with a team. A teammate who opens the page sees the toggles closed unless they open them. Put the most important text in the title line, not hidden under a closed arrow.

## Mistakes people make with toggles on Mac

- Typing > without a space. The line stays plain text until the space is there.
- Typing / in the middle of a sentence. The block menu opens, and picking an option can change the line you were writing.
- Expecting toggles to stay open. You open and close them by hand, and Notion has no default setting.
- Using ⌘⌥7 without a test. Confirm it once in the app, then rely on it.
- Looking for a menu bar item. Notion's help pages do not list one for toggles, so the menu bar will not help.

## Troubleshooting when nothing happens

Start with the app version. Click Notion in the menu bar and choose Check for Updates. Notion updates itself, but you can check by hand. If new features do not show up, press ⌘R to refresh. To see when the app last updated, open ? > More.

If the app will not open and shows the message 'You can't open the application Notion', you probably have the wrong processor build for your Mac. Open Apple menu > About This Mac, uninstall, and install the matching version. The [application not supported fix](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/fix-the-application-not-supported-error-in-notion) covers the steps.

## Ask Lazur where the toggle controls are

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold ⌥⌘, which is Option and Command, and ask about what is on your screen. Ask where the drag handle is, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it. Ask it to walk you through a toggle, and it guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click.

![Man at a laptop reading a page layout, the kind of task where a toggle list helps](https://lfobmih1tpj3sgpo.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/content-images/howto/create-a-toggle-in-notion/how-to-create-a-toggle-in-notion-2-f1951a.jpg)

Lazur does not click or type for you. It shows the spot and waits. You make each change in Notion, so the page stays in your hands.

## Versions and updates that change the Mac app

Notion's desktop beta 7.39 arrived on 15 October 2026 and moved the app to macOS 13 Ventura or later. Homebrew lists 7.42.3 as the current Mac build. Homebrew is a third-party tracker, so treat that number as a pointer, not an official release note.

The 7.42.x updates fixed an issue where the Command Search and Notion AI keyboard shortcuts on macOS could stop working. The Notion releases list showed no toggle change in the entries that were readable. Check the release notes if a toggle behaves differently after an update.

## Windows and the shortcut difference

Windows uses Ctrl + Shift + 7 for the same toggle list shortcut, according to the keyboard shortcuts page. The Mac version swaps in Command and Option. If you move between a Mac and a Windows PC, the slash command is the easiest route to remember, because it avoids modifier keys entirely.

## Where to go next

Once toggles feel natural, use them for meeting notes or a reading list. Students who study in Notion can read [Notion for students on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/for/students/notion). Teams that write specs can read [Notion for product managers on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/for/product-managers/notion). When you want to try Lazur, the [download page](https://www.lazur.app/download) has the Mac install.

## Shortcuts

- Create a toggle list (Command + Option + 7): ⌘⌥7
- Open the block menu on a line: /
- Make a toggle with Markdown: > then Space
- Open or close a single toggle item: ⌘↩
- Expand or close all toggles in a list: ⌘⌥T

## If it does not work

- **Typing > does not create a toggle** Check two things. The > must sit at the start of the line, and you must press Space right after it. Without the space, it stays a plain character.
- **The ⌘⌥7 shortcut does nothing** Use /toggle and choose Toggle list under Basic blocks. Confirm the shortcut once in your copy of the app, since the source for it is Notion's help text.
- **New features or menu items are missing** Click Notion in the menu bar and choose Check for Updates. If the new items still do not appear, press ⌘R to refresh. To see when the app last updated, click ? > More.
- **You can't open the application 'Notion'** This usually means the wrong processor build for your Mac. Open Apple menu > About This Mac, uninstall the app, then install the version that matches your chip from notion.com/desktop.
- **Toggles stay closed when I open the page** This is expected. Toggles open and close by hand, and Notion has no default setting. Click each arrow, or use ⌘⌥T to expand or close all toggles in a list.

## With Lazur

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask; it sees your screen, answers out loud, points at buttons and walks you through apps. Hold fn to dictate. Free for 3 days, then $18/month: https://www.lazur.app/download

- “Walk me through making a toggle in Notion.”: Lazur guides you one click at a time and waits for each click. When it is time to pick the option, it points at Toggle list in the block menu. (Walks you through it)

## FAQ

### Is there a menu bar option to make a toggle in Notion on Mac?

Not that Notion's help pages list. Create toggles from the page itself: type > and a space, type /toggle, press ⌘⌥7, or use the ⋮⋮ handle and Turn into. The Mac menu bar holds app tasks such as Check for Updates.

### What is the Mac shortcut for a toggle list in Notion?

Command + Option + 7, written ⌘⌥7. Notion's keyboard shortcuts page lists it as cmd/ctrl + option/shift + 7. On Windows the same shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + 7, and Notion warns that this combination may already be in use there.

### Can I make a toggle open by default?

No. Notion's writing basics page says toggle lists open and close manually, with no way to make them open or closed by default. ⌘⌥T expands or closes all toggles in one list, but that is a keypress, not a setting.

### Which macOS version does the Notion desktop app need?

macOS 13 Ventura or later, according to Notion's system requirements page. Notion 7.38.1 was the last desktop update that supported macOS 12 Monterey.

### Do I need the desktop app to make a toggle?

This guide covers the Mac desktop app, which you install from notion.com/desktop. The desktop app also adds tabs, push notifications, and Command Search from the menu bar.

### How do I turn a toggle back into normal text?

Hover over the toggle, click the ⋮⋮ handle in the left margin, choose Turn into, and pick the block type you want. Turn into changes one block into another type.

### Will Lazur make the toggle for me?

No. Ask Lazur where the ⋮⋮ handle or Toggle list is, and it circles that spot on your screen. Ask it to walk you through the steps, and it guides you one click at a time. You make the clicks.
