On a Mac, click the layer you want, then press ⌘D to duplicate it in Figma. Holding ⌥ Option while you drag the layer also makes a copy, and ⌘C followed by ⌘V works too.

## Quick answer

- Select the layer, then press ⌘D. Figma makes a copy in the same file.
- Hold ⌥ Option and drag to copy and place the copy in one motion.
- Use ⌘C then ⌘V to paste. Use ⌘⇧V to match the x and y position of the selected object.
- The Mac desktop app and the browser use the same ⌘D shortcut.

Applies to: Figma desktop app and Figma in the browser on macOS. Time: 2 min. Difficulty: Easy.

## What you need

- A Mac running macOS 12 Monterey or later for the desktop app
- The Figma desktop app, or Figma in a supported browser
- A Figma file you can edit
- A keyboard with Command and Option keys

## How to Duplicate a layer in Figma on Mac in Figma on a Mac

1. **Open the file you want to edit.** Open the Figma desktop app for Mac, or sign in at figma.com in your browser. Then open the file that holds the layer. The duplicate shortcut works in both places. Tip: The Mac desktop app needs macOS 12 Monterey or later.
2. **Select the layer.** Click the layer name in the Layers panel on the left. You can also click the object on the canvas. Check that the selection outline sits around the right object. Tip: Click an empty part of the canvas to clear the selection and start again.
3. **Press Command D.** Shortcut: ⌘D. Hold Command and tap D once. Figma creates a copy of the selected layer. A top-level frame copy goes to the right of the original. Other objects land on top of the original. Tip: Each press makes another copy, so a second press adds a third layer to the canvas.
4. **Check the Layers panel.** Find the new item in the Layers panel and compare it with the original. If the copy hides behind another layer, select it in the list before you move it.
5. **Or hold Option and drag.** Shortcut: ⌥ drag. Select the layer, hold Option, and drag it. Release the mouse where you want the copy. The original stays where it was. Tip: Press Option before the mouse button goes down, or the layer moves without copying.
6. **Use copy and paste for another spot.** Shortcut: ⌘C, ⌘V. Select the layer and press ⌘C. Click the place where the copy should go, then press ⌘V. Figma's help article says duplicating is shorthand for copy and paste.
7. **Match the x and y position.** (File > Edit > Paste over selection) Shortcut: ⌘⇧V. Copy the layer with ⌘C. Select the object whose position you want to match. Press ⌘⇧V. The pasted object matches the x and y position of the selected object. Tip: The menu path is File > Edit > Paste over selection, per Figma's help article.
8. **Open the shortcuts panel.** (Help and resources > Keyboard shortcuts) Shortcut: ⌃⇧?. Click Help and resources in the bottom-right corner of the Figma window. Choose Keyboard shortcuts to see the full list. On Mac, the panel shortcut is Control Shift ?. Tip: Check the panel before you hunt through the menus for a command.

## Duplicate a layer with the ⌘D shortcut

The fastest route is the keyboard. Click the layer in the Layers panel on the left, or click the object on the canvas. Then hold Command and press D. Figma makes a copy in the same file right away. You do not open a menu, and you do not drag anything.

![Designer working on a laptop at a desk, duplicating a layer in a Figma design file on a Mac](https://lfobmih1tpj3sgpo.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/content-images/howto/duplicate-a-layer-in-figma/how-to-duplicate-a-layer-in-figma-1-8cd21c.jpg)

Figma's help article lists ⌘D as the Mac shortcut and ⌃D as the Windows one. The shortcut works the same way in the browser and in the desktop app. You can learn it once and use it in both places. The rest of this page covers the other ways to copy a layer, where the copy lands, and what to do when the shortcut seems to do nothing.

Two things trip people up. First, ⌘D needs a selection. If nothing is selected, there is nothing to copy. Second, the shortcut has to reach Figma. A browser extension or another app that claims ⌘D can block it, so the troubleshooting list near the end covers that case.

## Where the copy lands on the canvas

Position depends on what you duplicate. Figma's help article says a duplicated top-level frame goes to the right of the original. Any other object lands on top of the original. That second rule catches people out, because the copy sits in the same spot and the canvas looks unchanged.

Here is a worked example. Say you have a frame called Login with a button inside it. Select the button and press ⌘D. A second button appears exactly over the first. Drag the top one away, and the original stays where it was. Now select the whole Login frame and press ⌘D. The new frame appears to the right of the old one.

Watch the Layers panel while you test. The new item shows where the copy went in the stack. That helps when a layer hides behind another one, and you can see which copy you are moving.

## Duplicate by holding Option and dragging

Option-drag is the second method. Hold ⌥ Option, click the layer, and drag it. Let go of the mouse where you want the copy. The original stays put. Noble Desktop's Mac shortcut list, a third-party reference, gives Option-drag as a duplicate method and lists ⌘D beside it.

Use Option-drag when you want to place the copy by eye. Use ⌘D when the copy can sit in the default spot and you plan to move it later. Both give you a real copy. Neither one changes the original.

Timing matters. Press and hold Option before you press the mouse button. If you let go of Option first, the drag moves the layer and makes no copy. That mistake is easy to miss, because the layer still looks correct.

## Copy and paste when you need a different spot

Copy and paste is the third route. Figma's help article says duplicating is shorthand for copy and paste. So ⌘C followed by ⌘V gives the same kind of copy. Use this route when the copy has to go somewhere other than beside the original.

Here is the sequence. Select the layer and press ⌘C. Then click the spot where the copy should go and press ⌘V. This takes one more step than ⌘D, but you decide where the copy goes first.

If you need the copy at the exact x and y position of another object, use ⌘⇧V. Figma calls it Paste over selection. The help article says the pasted object matches the x and y position of the selected object. Select the target before you press the shortcut. The article describes that position match only for this command.

## Find Paste over selection in the menu bar

The shortcut is faster, but the menu helps when you forget it. Figma's help article gives the path as File > Edit > Paste over selection. Click File in the menu bar at the top of the screen, move to Edit, then click Paste over selection. The command works on your current selection, so select the target first.

![Close-up of a Mac keyboard with the Command key, used to duplicate a layer in Figma on Mac](https://lfobmih1tpj3sgpo.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/content-images/howto/duplicate-a-layer-in-figma/how-to-duplicate-a-layer-in-figma-2-1017e7.jpg)

The Duplicate command is missing from the menus. Figma's help articles do not list a Duplicate item in the Edit menu. They also do not list one in the right-click menu. Some third-party guides describe an Edit > Duplicate command. Figma's own pages do not confirm it, so use ⌘D instead of searching for it.

## Check the keyboard shortcuts panel on your Mac

If you are unsure about a shortcut, open Figma's own list. The help article says to click Help and resources in the bottom-right corner, then choose Keyboard shortcuts. On Mac, the panel opens with Control Shift ?. Keyboard controls are enabled by default and cannot be turned off, so a shortcut that does nothing is worth checking against the list first.

For a full walk through the panel, read [how to show keyboard shortcuts in Figma on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/show-the-keyboard-shortcuts-panel-in-figma). It covers the Help button and a few layout fixes that make the panel easier to find.

## Desktop app or browser: does the shortcut change?

The shortcut stays the same. Figma's guide to the desktop app says the Mac app gives the same features as the browser app. It adds plugin and widget development and access to local fonts without the font installer. If you still work in the browser and want the Mac app, read [how to install the Figma desktop app on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/install-the-desktop-app-in-figma).

The Mac app needs macOS 12 Monterey or later. Figma removes support for previous desktop app versions six months after release. If the app asks you to update, do it. On a managed company computer, an administrator may need to install the update.

Which version should you use? For duplicating layers, either one works. Pick the desktop app if you build plugins or use fonts installed on your Mac. Pick the browser if you switch between many computers and do not want to install anything.

## Common mistakes that stop the copy from appearing

- Pressing ⌘D with nothing selected. Click the layer first, then press the shortcut.
- Selecting the frame when you wanted the object inside it. Check the Layers panel to see which item is highlighted.
- Letting go of Option too early. Hold it before the drag starts, or the layer just moves.
- Expecting every copy to appear to the right. Only top-level frames go to the right.
- Assuming the copy is missing when it sits on top of the original. Drag the top layer away to see the copy.
- Blaming Figma when another app owns ⌘D. Test in the desktop app to rule that out.
- Mixing up duplicate with export. A duplicate stays inside the file. To save a PNG, read [how to export a frame as PNG in Figma](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/export-a-frame-as-png-in-figma).

## When Option-drag skips some objects

Some people report that Option-drag copies some objects and skips others. One Figma Community thread describes the problem with vectors inside frames in the desktop app. Community Support said in 2022 that it was not a known issue. A user reported the same problem on the Mac app in March 2024. A 2024 reply said that updating the app fixed it for them.

No Figma staff member confirms a cause or a fix in that thread. Treat the update advice as a user report, not an official fix. If your copy fails, update the app first. If it still fails, use ⌘D or copy and paste, which do not depend on the drag.

## When Shift and Option stop working together

A second thread describes Shift and Option with a drag stopping after a macOS update on an M1 Mac. Community Support suggested testing in another browser and clearing the desktop app cache. A user reported on July 30, 2024 that clearing the cache fixed the problem. Community Support confirmed that on September 5, 2024.

This is a forum fix, not official documentation. It worked for that user, and Community Support confirmed it. Run the browser test first, since it costs nothing and tells you whether the browser is the problem.

## Duplicate methods at a glance

| Method | Mac keys | Where the copy lands | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Duplicate | ⌘D | Right of the original for top-level frames, on top for other objects | Quick copies |
| Option-drag | Hold ⌥ Option, then drag | Wherever you release the mouse | Placing by eye |
| Copy and paste | ⌘C then ⌘V | Where you click before pasting | Choosing a destination |
| Paste over selection | ⌘⇧V | Matches the x and y position of the selected object | Exact alignment |

## Edge cases in large files

Large files raise the stakes. When you select a whole frame, one ⌘D copies everything inside it. A quick look at the Layers panel afterward confirms that the copy holds the layers you expected. Do this before you move anything, so you can undo with ⌘Z if something is wrong.

Components need extra care. Duplicating a component gives you a new object that you edit on its own. If you want one master that updates every copy, read [how to create a component in Figma](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/create-a-component-in-figma) before you copy anything.

> **Shared files:** If other people can edit the file, a duplicate you make appears for them too. Test shortcuts on a draft page or a personal copy first.

## Where to go next

Once the copy is in place, you usually move it, rename it, or restyle it. Each of those tasks has its own steps. If you prefer the keyboard for picking layers, read [how to select layers with keyboard in Figma on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/select-layers-with-the-keyboard-in-figma), which covers Enter, Tab and Option Space.

## Shortcuts

- Duplicate selected layer: ⌘D
- Duplicate by dragging: ⌥ drag
- Copy selected layer: ⌘C
- Paste: ⌘V
- Paste over selection: ⌘⇧V
- Keyboard shortcuts panel: ⌃⇧?

## If it does not work

- **⌘D does nothing** Confirm that a layer is selected. Then test in the desktop app. A browser extension or another app can take ⌘D before Figma receives it.
- **Option-drag copies some objects but not others** A Figma Community thread reports this for vectors inside frames. Update the app, and use ⌘D or copy and paste as a fallback.
- **Shift and Option shortcut stopped after a macOS update** Test in another browser, then clear the desktop app cache. A user in a 2024 forum thread said this fixed it for them.
- **The copy lands in the wrong place** Top-level frames go to the right of the original, and other objects land on top. Select the target and press ⌘⇧V to match its x and y position.
- **I cannot find Duplicate in the Edit menu** Figma's help articles do not list it. Use ⌘D instead, or the Option-drag method.
- **Figma asks me to update the app** Update it. On a managed company computer, an administrator may need to install the update.

## FAQ

### Is the Mac shortcut ⌘D or Command D?

They are the same key. On a Mac, ⌘ is the Command key. Press Command and D together while a layer is selected. Figma's help article lists ⌃D as the Windows version of the shortcut.

### Does duplicating a frame put the copy on top of the original?

No. A duplicated top-level frame goes to the right of the original. Other objects land on top of the original, in the same spot. Check the Layers panel if you cannot see the copy.

### Is Option-drag the same as ⌘D?

Both make a copy. Option-drag places the copy wherever you release the mouse. ⌘D places the copy in the default spot, which is to the right for top-level frames and on top for other objects.

### Why does the copy look like nothing happened?

Most objects land on top of the original in the same position, so the canvas looks unchanged. Drag the top layer away from the original to see the copy. The Layers panel also shows the new item.

### Do the desktop app and the browser use the same shortcut?

Figma's help article says the shortcut is the same in the browser and the desktop app. The desktop app adds plugin and widget development and access to local fonts. Duplicating a layer works the same way in both.

### Which macOS version does the Figma desktop app need?

Figma's desktop app guide says the Mac app requires macOS 12 Monterey or later. Figma removes support for previous desktop app versions six months after release, so update when the app asks you to.

### Is there a Duplicate command in the Edit menu?

Figma's help articles do not list a Duplicate item in the Edit menu or in the right-click menu. Some third-party guides describe one, but Figma's own pages do not confirm it. Use ⌘D.

### Why does Option-drag skip some of my objects?

A Figma Community thread reports this for vectors inside frames in the desktop app. No Figma staff member confirmed a cause in the thread. One commenter said updating the app fixed it for them.
