- Tick the checkbox below your message if the reply should also show in the channel or DM.
- Select a message and press T or → to open its thread from the keyboard.

Applies to: Slack desktop app for macOS, all workspaces. Time: 2 min. Difficulty: Easy.

## What you need

- A Mac with the Slack desktop app installed and signed in
- A channel or direct message where you can see the message to answer

## How to Reply in a thread in Slack on Mac in Slack on a Mac

1. **Open the message.** Go to the channel or direct message that holds the message you want to answer. Scroll until that message is on screen. Replies attach to one message, so pick the right one first.
2. **Hover over the message.** Move the pointer onto the message. A small toolbar appears on the message. Find the Reply in thread icon in that toolbar. The icon shows only while the pointer is over the message. Tip: If the toolbar does not show, move the pointer slightly. It hides when the pointer leaves the message.
3. **Click Reply in thread.** Click the Reply in thread icon. A thread panel opens beside the channel. The original message sits at the top of the panel, and a reply box sits at the bottom.
4. **Type your reply.** Click into the reply box at the bottom of the thread panel. Type your reply. Use the same formatting, emoji, and mentions you would use in the channel.
5. **Tick the checkbox if the channel needs it.** Look below your message in the reply box for the checkbox. Tick it if the reply should also show in the channel or direct message main view. Leave it unticked to keep the reply inside the thread.
6. **Send the reply.** Send your reply. It appears under the original message in the thread. If you ticked the checkbox, it also appears in the main view of the channel or direct message.
7. **Send an existing reply to the channel.** (Three dots icon > Send reply to this channel) If you posted without the checkbox, open the thread and find your reply. Click the three dots icon on that reply. Choose Send reply to this channel. Only that reply appears in the main view.
8. **Open Threads from Home.** (Home > Threads) Shortcut: ⌘ ⇧ T. To find threads you follow later, go to Home and choose Threads. Threads with unread replies sit at the top of the list.

## Reply in a thread on the Slack Mac app

A thread is a side conversation attached to one message. When you reply in a thread, your words stay with that message. The rest of the channel keeps moving, and people who care about the detail can open the thread. That is the whole idea. It keeps a busy channel readable.

This guide covers the Slack desktop app for macOS. The steps match the official Slack Help Center article on threads. Menus and labels can change between app updates. If yours look different, check the Slack Help Center for the current wording.

## Reply in a thread step by step

Follow these steps in order. You need to be in a channel or direct message and able to see the message you want to answer. The last two steps are optional. Once you know where the icons sit, the whole process takes about two minutes.

## What the checkbox below your reply does

Below the reply box sits a checkbox. Tick it, and your reply shows in the thread and also in the main view of the channel or direct message. Leave it unticked, and the reply stays inside the thread. Slack's help article describes it this way.

Most people get this choice wrong in one direction. Some tick the box on everything, and the channel fills with repeated noise. Others never tick it, so people who skipped the thread miss a change. The table below is a quick guide.

| Checkbox | Where the reply shows | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Unticked | Inside the thread only | Clarifying questions, side notes, back-and-forth with one or two people |
| Ticked | Thread and the channel or DM main view | Decisions, answers the whole group needs, status changes |

_Where a reply appears, depending on the checkbox._

Tick the box when one of these is true.

- A decision changed, and people who skipped the thread need the new answer.
- You answered a question that several people asked in the channel.
- An owner, date, or link changed, and the whole team has to act on it.

## Send a thread reply to the channel after you post it

Sometimes you post without ticking the box, then change your mind. You do not need to delete the reply and post it again. Open the thread, find your reply, and click the three dots icon on it. Choose Send reply to this channel. Only that reply appears in the main view. The original message stays where it was.

Slack's help article lists this option right after posting. It is the first fix to try when a reply went missing from the channel.

## Use the keyboard to open and reply in threads

Slack has a shortcut for threads on Mac, and it also works on Windows and Linux. Select a message, then press T or →. Slack opens the thread, or starts a reply if the thread is already open. Use it when the pointer is in the way.

The Threads view has its own shortcut, ⌘ ⇧ T. That one works only in the desktop app. Option plus arrow keys do not help with threads. They move between conversations and unread items, so people often press them expecting the next reply and land in the next channel instead.

![Team in an office on laptops, showing why you might reply in a thread in Slack on Mac](https://lfobmih1tpj3sgpo.public.blob.vercel-storage.com/content-images/howto/reply-in-a-thread-in-slack/how-to-reply-in-a-thread-in-2-0e3b68.jpg)

If you use VoiceOver, Slack's screen reader guide says End starts or replies to a thread and moves focus into the message box. Left arrow takes you back to the original message. Right arrow or T opens the thread in the secondary view.

## Find the threads you follow

Threads you have joined are collected in one place. Go to Home, then choose Threads. Threads with unread replies sit at the top, so you can clear the urgent ones first. In the desktop app, ⌘ ⇧ T jumps there from the keyboard.

For the full walkthrough of that view, read [how to view threads in Slack on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/open-the-threads-view-in-slack). For everything unread across the workspace, [the Unreads view guide](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/view-all-unread-messages-in-slack) is the better read.

## Turn notifications for a thread on or off

Replying can mean you get pinged for every answer after yours. Open the three dots menu on the thread. Choose Get notified about new replies to follow along. Choose Turn off notifications for replies to stop the pings. Your reply stays in the thread either way.

## A worked example in a busy channel

Say your team uses a channel called #launch for a product update. Mina asks whether the beta date still holds. You know it does, but only Mina needs that answer. Hover over the message, click Reply in thread, and type yes with the date. Leave the box unticked. The rest of the channel stays quiet.

A week later, the date moves, and the whole team needs to know. Post a new reply in the thread with the new date, and tick the checkbox before you send. If you forgot the box the first time, use the three dots menu to send the old reply to the channel as well.

## Pick thread or channel before you type

Before you type, ask one question. Who needs this reply? A thread works for one person or a small group. The channel works for everyone. Here is how that plays out in common cases.

- A quick yes or no to a question from one person: thread only.
- A deadline change that affects the whole project: channel, with the checkbox ticked.
- A side joke or a link someone asked for: thread only.
- A new decision that reverses an earlier one: channel, and say so in the reply.

## Mistakes people make with thread replies

- Typing in the main message box. That posts a new message, not a reply. Check that the thread panel is open before you press send.
- Ticking the checkbox on every reply. The channel fills up, and people stop reading it.
- Expecting Option arrow keys to jump between replies. They move between conversations.
- Forgetting that the three dots menu is the only way to send an existing reply to the channel.
- Assuming a thread is gone when it is missing from Threads. Use [message search](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/search-messages-in-slack) to find it by a word from the reply.

## Why a thread reply is missing or silent

Most problems come from one of three things. The checkbox was off, so the channel never saw the reply. Notifications are blocked on your Mac. Or the thread is not in the list you are looking at. Start with the thread itself. If your reply is there, the problem is visibility, not posting.

Slack's troubleshooting article gives three checks for notifications. First, look for a snooze icon next to your name in Slack. Second, turn off Do Not Disturb in Control Center. Third, open Notifications in macOS settings and confirm Allow Notifications from Slack is on, with the alert style set to Banners or Alerts. The help article still calls that area System Preferences, so the wording may differ on your Mac.

If the Threads view looks stuck, Slack suggests pressing ⇧ Esc in the desktop app. That marks everything as read, so use it on purpose. For more causes and fixes, read [how to fix Slack notifications on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/fix-missing-notifications-in-slack).

## Does this work in the browser version?

This page covers the Mac desktop app only. The sources I checked describe the desktop app, and I found no separate steps for the browser version. If your screen looks different in a browser tab, the shortcut list may not match. Check the Slack Help Center for the current version.

## Keep your Mac app current

Slack ships Mac app updates over time, and menu wording can change with them. The Slack for Mac release notes list each version and its date. Check them after a big update, when a step on this page no longer matches your screen. Then trust the icon and label you see, and use these steps as the map.

## What to do next

Once you can reply in a thread, the next skill is catching up. Read [how to jump to unread messages in Slack on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/jump-to-the-latest-unread-message-in-slack) so you start with the newest activity. If a busy channel keeps pulling you away, [mute it](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/mute-a-channel-in-slack) and check threads on your own schedule.

## Shortcuts

- Open or reply to the thread of a selected message: T or →
- Open the Threads view (desktop app only): ⌘ ⇧ T
- Start a thread reply and move focus to the box (screen reader): End
- Go back from a thread to the original message (screen reader): ←
- Mark everything as read in the desktop app (use with care): ⇧ Esc

## If it does not work

- **The Reply in thread icon does not appear** Move the pointer directly over the message. The toolbar shows only on hover. If it still does not appear, select the message with the keyboard and press T to open its thread.
- **My reply is in the thread but not in the channel** Open the thread, click the three dots icon on the reply, and choose Send reply to this channel. For new replies, tick the checkbox below your message before you send.
- **The Threads view looks stuck** Open the workspace in the desktop app and press ⇧ Esc to mark everything as read. This clears the stuck view, but it marks all messages as read, so use it only when you need that.
- **I get no notification for thread replies** Check the snooze icon next to your name, turn off Do Not Disturb in Control Center, then open Notifications in macOS settings. Make sure Allow Notifications from Slack is on with Banners or Alerts selected.
- **One thread sends too many pings** Open the three dots menu on the thread and choose Turn off notifications for replies. You stay in the thread and can still read it.

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask; it sees your screen, answers out loud, points at buttons and walks you through apps. Hold fn to dictate. Free for 3 days, then $18/month: https://www.lazur.app/download

- “Where is the Reply in thread button?”: Lazur circles the Reply in thread icon on your screen and labels it, so you can find it on the hover toolbar. (Points at it)

## FAQ

### Where is the Reply in thread button on a Mac?

It sits in a small toolbar that appears when you hover over a message in the Slack desktop app. Move the pointer onto the message and wait a moment. If nothing appears, move the pointer slightly, because the toolbar hides when the pointer leaves the message.

### What does the checkbox below my reply do?

It decides whether the reply also appears in the main view of the channel or direct message. When it is ticked, everyone in the channel sees the reply. When it is unticked, the reply stays in the thread, and only people who open the thread see it.

### Can I send a thread reply to the channel after I post it?

Yes. Open the thread, click the three dots icon on that reply, and choose Send reply to this channel. Only that reply goes to the main view. You do not need to delete it and post it again.

### What is the keyboard shortcut to reply in a thread on Mac?

Select a message and press T or →. Slack opens the thread, or starts a reply in it. The same key works on Windows and Linux. The Threads view has a separate shortcut, ⌘ ⇧ T, and that one works only in the desktop app.

### Why is my thread reply not showing in the channel?

The checkbox was probably off when you sent it. Open the thread and use Send reply to this channel on that reply. From now on, tick the checkbox below your message before you send if the whole group needs it.

### Why am I not getting notified about thread replies on my Mac?

Check three things. Look for a snooze icon next to your name in Slack. Turn off Do Not Disturb in Control Center. In macOS notification settings, make sure Allow Notifications from Slack is on with Banners or Alerts selected. If one thread stays quiet, open its three dots menu and choose Get notified about new replies.

### Does the Threads view shortcut work in a browser?

Not according to Slack's keyboard shortcut list. ⌘ ⇧ T for the Threads view is marked as working only in the Slack desktop app. In a browser, go to Home and choose Threads with the mouse instead.
