To save a Pages document as a Word file on Mac, open it, click Share in the toolbar, choose Export and Send, then pick Word. Click Save, choose a folder, and Pages creates a .docx file that Microsoft Word can open.

## Quick answer

- Pages has no plain Save as Word command. You export instead: Share > Export and Send > Word.
- Save As (Option-Shift-Command-S) keeps the file in Pages format. Shift-Command-S makes a duplicate instead.
- Apple's keyboard shortcut list has no shortcut for exporting to Word, so use the menus.
- Pages doesn't export the older .doc format. Export .docx, then open it in Word and save it as .doc if you need that.
- In Pages for iCloud, use More > Download a Copy > Microsoft Word. View Only shared documents show a Download button instead.

Applies to: Pages on Mac, version 15.4, and Pages for iCloud in a browser. Time: 5 min. Difficulty: Easy.

## What you need

- Pages installed on your Mac. Check the version with Pages > About Pages.
- The document open in Pages, on your Mac or in Pages for iCloud.
- Space for a new .docx file in a folder you can find later.
- Microsoft Word or another app that opens .docx files, if you want to check the result.

## How to Save a Pages document as a Word file on Mac in Pages on a Mac

1. **Save the document first.** (File > Save) Shortcut: ⌘S. Press Command-S, or choose File > Save, so your latest edits are stored before you export. The export creates a new Word file, and your Pages file stays where it is. Tip: If you use Pages for iCloud in a browser, skip this step and use the browser route instead.
2. **Click Share in the toolbar.** (Toolbar > Share) Look at the toolbar at the top of the Pages window. Click Share. The Share menu opens below the button. Tip: If you can't find Share, check your Pages version before you look for another control.
3. **Choose Export and Send.** (Share > Export and Send) In the Share menu, click Export and Send. Apple lists no keyboard shortcut for this part, so use the mouse or trackpad. Tip: Move slowly across the menu. A quick movement can close a submenu before you reach Word.
4. **Pick Word as the format.** (Export and Send > Word) Choose Word from the list. Pages exports Word files as Office Open XML, which is the DOCX format. If you need the older DOC format, export DOCX first, then open and save the file in Word. Tip: Pick Word, not PDF, when you need an editable file.
5. **Click Save and choose a location.** Click Save. Choose the folder where the Word file should go, such as Desktop, Documents, or a project folder. Check the file name, then confirm. Tip: Give the file a clear name with the word draft in it, so you don't mix up the two files.
6. **Open the .docx in Word.** Double-click the new file, or open it from Word's File menu. Scroll through the whole document before you send it. Check images, tables, headers, and page breaks. Tip: Keep the Pages file. Edits you make in Word stay in the Word file only.

## Why Pages has no plain Save As Word option

Pages treats Word as an export, not a save. You won't find a Save as Word choice next to Save. Apple's support article for converting Pages, Numbers, and Keynote files puts the route under the Share button. You choose Export and Send, then Word. Pages writes the new file as Office Open XML, which is the .docx format that Word reads.

Save As is a different command, and it trips up a lot of people. Save As keeps the document in Pages format. Press Option-Shift-Command-S and you get a dialog that looks like a file save, but it still makes a Pages file. Shift-Command-S is the other trap. It runs Duplicate, which makes a copy inside Pages, not a Word file.

## Save a Pages document as Word on Mac, step by step

Use the Pages app on your Mac for these steps. Apple's current support article describes the Share route. Wikipedia lists Pages 15.4 as the current stable release, so these steps are written for that version. If your menus look different, check your version first. The version section further down explains how.

Here is a worked example. Say you wrote a cover letter called Cover Letter Draft in Pages, and a recruiter asks for a Word file. Open the document and press Command-S so the latest edits are saved. Then follow the steps below. Pages makes a Word file, and your Pages original stays where it was.

## Pages for Mac or Pages for iCloud: which one to export from

Use the Mac app when the document lives on your Mac and Pages is installed there. The Share and File menus described in this guide belong to that app. Export from the copy that holds your latest edits, because an export only carries what the open document contains.

Use Pages for iCloud when you're on a computer without the Mac app, or when the file exists only in iCloud. It runs in a browser, so the download follows your browser's settings, not Pages settings. The browser route is covered in its own section below.

## Pages export to Word Mac: the older File menu route

Apple's Pages user guide for Mac describes a different path. It goes File > Export To, then the file format. Choose Word from the format list. A sheet then asks for a name, optional tags, a Where pop-up menu, and an Export button. Use the Where menu to pick the folder, and check the name before you click Export.

The same guide mentions a password option. You can require a password to open the exported copy, keep the original password, change it, or export without a password. Use a password only if you can store it safely. A password you forget can lock you out of your own file.

Use the Share route if you see Export and Send. Use File > Export To if your version doesn't show it. Both routes end with a Word file, so pick the one your menus support.

## Export from Pages for iCloud in a browser

Pages for iCloud runs in your browser, and its menus differ from the Mac app. Apple lists Pages, PDF, Microsoft Word, and EPUB as output choices. Word is the one you want for this job.

1. Open the document in Pages for iCloud in your browser.
2. With the document open, click More in the toolbar. In the document manager, select the document, then click More instead.
3. Choose Download a Copy.
4. Pick Microsoft Word from the output formats.
5. Find the file in your browser's download location. In Safari on Mac, that setting is under Safari > Settings > General > File download location.

Shared documents set to View Only work differently. You won't see More. You'll see a Download button in its place, and the file goes to the same browser download location. If you can't find the file, check that setting first, then look at your browser's downloads list.

## Keyboard shortcuts for Pages on Mac, and where export fits

Apple's keyboard shortcut list for Pages covers saving and printing, but it doesn't list an export shortcut. Command-S saves. Option-Shift-Command-S opens Save As. Shift-Command-S duplicates. The table below shows the commands you're most likely to mix up.

| Action | Keys |
| --- | --- |
| Save | ⌘S |
| Save As | ⌥⇧⌘S |
| Duplicate | ⇧⌘S |
| Print | ⌘P |
| Close | ⌘W |
| Export to Word | None listed by Apple |

Shortcuts help with saving, but export still runs through Share or File. Use Command-S to keep your Pages file current. Then use the menu for the Word file, so you don't create a duplicate by accident.

## Check the Word file before you send it

A finished export doesn't prove the file is ready. Apple's support article says a document with watermarked premium Content Hub content shows a warning. You can export with the watermarks, or subscribe to Apple Creator Studio to remove them. Read that warning before you send anything to a client or a teacher.

Apple's Mac user guide also says smart annotations don't appear in exported Word documents. If you rely on smart annotations for notes, copy that text into the body or a separate note before you export. Then compare the two files side by side.

Open the .docx in Word and check these items, one at a time:

- Images, and whether text still wraps around them
- Page breaks and section breaks
- Headers, footers, and page numbers
- Fonts the other person may not have installed
- Tables, and the width of their columns
- Footnotes and endnotes, and their numbering

## Fix lost text wrapping around images

One Apple Community thread reports that a Pages 11.2 export to .docx on macOS lost text wrapping around images. The thread closed without a confirmed fix. Pages 11.2 is an older version, so the problem may not happen in Pages 15.4. Test your own file with an image before you rely on the export.

The thread offers two workarounds. One user exported to PDF and converted that PDF in Acrobat. Another suggested exporting to PDF and opening the PDF in Word 16.31 or later. Both are user suggestions, not Apple fixes, so check the layout after either one.

## Which Pages version you have, and why it matters

Pages changed in early 2026. Wikipedia says Pages 15.1 for macOS came out as a new app on January 28, 2026, as part of Apple Creator Studio. The older app no longer gets new features. Wikipedia lists Pages 15.4 as the stable release, dated September 29, 2026.

Check your version with Pages > About Pages before you follow an older guide. If your menus differ from the steps above, the version is the first thing to check. Apple's newsroom says Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and Freeform stay free to create, edit, and collaborate. That article doesn't address export, so use Apple's support article for export questions.

- **15.4** Pages version Wikipedia lists as the stable release, dated September 29, 2026. Apple's Mac guide is labeled 15.4 too. ([source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pages_(word_processor)))
- **$12.99** per month for Apple Creator Studio in the U.S., or $129 a year, with a one-month free trial for new subscribers. ([source](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/01/introducing-apple-creator-studio-an-inspiring-collection-of-creative-apps/))
- **$2.99** per month for college students and educators, or $29.99 a year, according to Apple's newsroom. ([source](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/01/introducing-apple-creator-studio-an-inspiring-collection-of-creative-apps/))

The only export condition Apple's support article names is the watermark on premium Content Hub content. Creator Studio is the subscription that removes it. The prices above are the U.S. figures Apple published.

## Mistakes people make when saving Pages as Word

- Pressing Option-Shift-Command-S and expecting a Word file. Save As keeps the Pages format.
- Pressing Shift-Command-S and getting a duplicate instead of an export.
- Looking for a Word option next to Save. Word lives under Share or File > Export To.
- Exporting, then editing the Pages file and forgetting the Word copy is now out of date.
- Choosing PDF when you need an editable Word file. A PDF is a different kind of file.
- Expecting smart annotations to appear in the Word file. Apple says they don't.
- Asking for the old .doc format. Export .docx, then save from Word if you need .doc.

## What to do after you save the Word file

Keep the Pages file as your master copy. Make edits in one place, then export again when the draft is ready. If someone sends changes back as a Word file, make those changes in Word, because that copy is now a separate document.

If your Word file needs a table of contents, build it in Pages first and export after. The Pages steps are in [How to create a table of contents in Pages on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/create-a-table-of-contents-in-pages). Then open the .docx in Word and check that page breaks still fall where you expect.

Give the file a clear name, such as the project name, the word draft, and the date. Pick a folder you will remember, such as Documents or a project folder. A clear name saves you a search the next time someone asks for the file.

## Shortcuts

- Save: ⌘S
- Save As: ⌥⇧⌘S
- Duplicate: ⇧⌘S
- Print: ⌘P
- Close: ⌘W

## If it does not work

- **I can't find Export and Send.** Open the Share menu from the toolbar button first. If the option still isn't there, check your Pages version with Pages > About Pages. Use the File > Export To route on older versions.
- **Save As didn't create a Word file.** Save As keeps the document in Pages format. Use Share > Export and Send > Word, or File > Export To > Word, to create a .docx file.
- **Text no longer wraps around images in the Word file.** An Apple Community thread reported this for a Pages 11.2 export, with no confirmed fix. Test your file, or export to PDF and check the result in Word 16.31 or later, as one user suggested.
- **Smart annotations are missing in Word.** Apple's Mac guide says smart annotations don't appear in exported Word documents. Copy the text into the body or a separate note before you export.
- **The Word file has a watermark.** The document uses watermarked premium Content Hub content. You can export with the watermarks, or subscribe to Apple Creator Studio to remove them.
- **Download a Copy is missing in Pages for iCloud.** A View Only shared document shows a Download button in place of More. Click it. The file goes to the download location set in your browser, which you can check in Safari > Settings > General.

Apple's support article says Pages doesn't offer the older Microsoft DOC format directly. Export .docx, then open that file in Word and save it from there if you need a .doc file.

### Is there a keyboard shortcut for exporting to Word?

Apple's keyboard shortcut list for Pages doesn't include an export shortcut. Command-S saves, Option-Shift-Command-S opens Save As, and Shift-Command-S duplicates the document.

### Why does my Word file look different from my Pages file?

Word and Pages handle layout differently, and some features may not carry over. Apple's Mac guide says smart annotations don't appear in exported Word documents. Check images, page breaks, and fonts in Word before you send the file.

### Can I export a Pages for iCloud document to Word in a browser?

Yes. Click More in the toolbar, choose Download a Copy, then pick Microsoft Word. A View Only shared document shows a Download button instead of More.
