To turn off Focused Inbox in new Outlook for Mac, open the View tab and select Turn off Focused Inbox. Once it is off, the Focused and Other tabs go away, and your mail sits in one list.

## Quick answer

- In new Outlook for Mac, open the View tab and select Turn off Focused Inbox.
- The menu reads Turn on Focused Inbox when the feature is already off.
- Legacy Outlook used Organize > Focused inbox, and Microsoft set legacy support to end in October 2026.
- No Mac keyboard shortcut is documented, so use the menu.
- If mail looks missing from All Accounts, check each account's Inbox before you do anything else.

Applies to: New Outlook for Mac (Microsoft 365), with notes for legacy Outlook and Outlook on the web. Time: 2 min. Difficulty: Easy.

## What you need

- New Outlook for Mac, with the View tab in the ribbon
- Legacy Outlook switch turned off in the top-right corner
- An admin policy that does not block Focused Inbox, if you use a work Mac
- Outlook on the web in a browser, for the web steps only

## How to Turn off Focused Inbox in Outlook on Mac in Outlook on a Mac

1. **Open new Outlook for Mac.** (Legacy Outlook switch) Open Outlook. Look at the top-right corner of the window. If the Legacy Outlook switch is on, turn it off so the new app loads. Tip: If you cannot find the switch, you may already be in the new app. Look for the View tab in the ribbon.
2. **Open the View tab.** (View) Click View in the ribbon at the top of the Outlook window. Tip: If the View tab is missing, the window is probably still legacy Outlook.
3. **Select Turn off Focused Inbox.** (View > Turn off Focused Inbox) Click Turn off Focused Inbox. The menu item reads Turn on Focused Inbox when the feature is already off. Microsoft's documentation describes no confirmation dialog, so the change should apply right away. Tip: Check the menu label before you click, because it changes with the setting.
4. **Check the message list.** Look at the top of the message list. The Focused and Other tabs should be gone, and your mail should appear in one list. If you use more than one account, check each Inbox too. Tip: If one account looks empty in the combined view, read the missing mail section before you change anything else.

Focused Inbox splits your mail into two tabs, Focused and Other. Focused holds the messages Outlook thinks matter most. Other holds everything else. Some people like the shorter list. Others miss a reply from a client because it landed in Other and nobody looked there. That is a fair trade for some people and a bad one for others. If you are in the second group, turning the feature off takes about a minute. This page covers new Outlook for Mac, the legacy app, Outlook on the web, and the cases where the setting will not change.

## Check which Outlook you are running first

The steps depend on which Outlook you open. Microsoft ships a new Outlook for Mac next to the older app, which Microsoft calls legacy Outlook. Look at the top-right corner of the window. The Legacy Outlook switch sits there. If it is on, you are running legacy Outlook. Microsoft says legacy support ends in October 2026, and that month has passed. SMU IT says legacy Outlook for Mac stops working on October 1, 2026, because Microsoft is retiring the connection protocol that legacy mode uses on macOS. If you still see the old layout, switch to the new app before you follow any steps on this page.

- New Outlook: the Legacy Outlook switch is off, and the ribbon has a View tab.
- Legacy Outlook: the switch is on, and you may see an Organize tab with a Focused inbox control.
- Outlook on the web: a page in your browser, where the setting lives under the gear icon in Settings.

The fastest route is the View tab. Open the ribbon, select View, then choose Turn off Focused Inbox. The menu item reads Turn on Focused Inbox when the feature is already off. Microsoft's documentation does not describe a confirmation dialog, so expect the change to apply right away. The steps below cover the same path, plus a check at the end.

## What changes after you turn it off

Once Focused Inbox is off, the Focused and Other tabs go away. Your inbox becomes one list. Turning it off changes the view. It does not delete messages. The volume is real, too. A 2025 Microsoft report, cited second-hand by ayari.io, puts the average at 117 emails per workday. If you used the tabs to decide what to read first, that habit now needs a new system. The rules section below covers one option.

Focused Inbox replaces Clutter. Messages already in Clutter stay there until you delete or move them. If a message you expected is missing, check Clutter before you assume it is gone. Then check each account, because the combined view can behave differently, as described later on this page.

- **117** emails received per workday on average, per Microsoft's 2025 telemetry (cited second-hand by ayari.io) ([source](https://ayari.io/article/email-statistics))
- **Oct 1, 2026** Date SMU IT says legacy Outlook for Mac stops working ([source](https://blog.smu.edu/itconnect/2026/09/16/microsoft-discontinue-legacy-outlook-mac/))

## Turn it off in legacy Outlook for Mac

In legacy Outlook, the control lived on the Organize tab. Microsoft's Focused inbox article names the control Focused inbox, and it places it on the Organize tab. Select Organize, then find the Focused inbox control and check whether it is on or off. The wording may differ between builds, so read the screen rather than trusting the words in this guide.

Legacy steps carry two warnings. First, legacy support ends in October 2026, and that month has passed, so the path may no longer work. Second, accounts added in new Outlook are not copied to legacy Outlook. If you move between the two apps, add your accounts again in the app you keep. To go back to legacy mode, open the Help menu and choose Revert to Legacy Outlook.

## Turn it off in Outlook on the web

1. Open Settings, the gear icon, in Outlook on the web.
2. Select Mail, then Message List.
3. In the Focused Inbox section, clear Sort messages into Focused and Other.
4. Select Save.

Microsoft describes this as a checkbox in the web settings. The Mac app uses a ribbon command instead. A university guide describes a different path, View all Outlook settings, then Mail, then Layout. Read the label on your screen rather than trusting one guide.

## Is there a keyboard shortcut?

Microsoft does not document a Mac keyboard shortcut for this setting. Its Outlook for Mac keyboard shortcut article has no entry for Focused Inbox, the Focused and Other tabs, or the View tab. That article covers Microsoft 365 for Mac, Outlook 2024 for Mac and Outlook 2021 for Mac, and it shows no publication date. Shortcut lists on other sites were not checked against Microsoft, so use the View tab. It takes two clicks once Outlook is open.

## Why the setting may be locked at work

If the toggle is missing or greyed out, your IT team may have set a policy. Microsoft documents two admin preferences for Outlook for Mac. FocusedInboxOffByDefault, from version 16.95, sets Focused Inbox off by default in new Outlook only. Users can still turn it on. DisableFocusedInbox, from version 16.66, prevents users from viewing Focused Inbox. It requires a configuration profile, so users cannot change it with Terminal. A policy is a reasonable guess for your Mac, but it is not a confirmed cause. Ask IT which setting applies before you spend more time on the menu.

## Mail missing from All Accounts after you turn it off

One Microsoft Q&A user reported a problem in June 2026. They were on Outlook for Mac 16.109.3 with macOS 26.5.1. After they turned Focused Inbox off, the Inbox in All Accounts showed none of the expected mail. Each account's Inbox showed its own mail when selected alone. Reinstalling did not fix it for that user, and the thread has no accepted answer.

A Q&A moderator concluded the emails were not missing and that the problem seemed limited to the combined All Accounts view. Start with the same check. Click each account's Inbox on its own. If the mail appears there, your mail is fine, and only the combined view is wrong for you. The moderator also suggested backing up On My Computer data, reinstalling and using Help > Contact Support. Back up first. Treat a reinstall as the last step, not the first.

## Mistakes people make with this setting

- Following Windows steps. New Outlook for Windows uses View, then View Settings, then Mail and Message List. The Mac ribbon path is different.
- Hunting for a Mac shortcut. Microsoft does not document one, so use the View tab.
- Assuming a message was deleted. Check Clutter and each account's Inbox first.
- Trusting one guide over another. A third-party guide points to Outlook Settings > Reading. Microsoft's documentation does not, so check the menu on your own screen.
- Expecting Focused Inbox on a shared mailbox. Microsoft says Focused Inbox does not work with shared mailboxes, by design.

## How to turn it back on

Open the View tab and select Turn on Focused Inbox. The Focused and Other tabs return to the top of your inbox. If your IT team has set DisableFocusedInbox, you cannot view Focused Inbox, and you cannot turn it back on yourself. In that case, ask IT for the change.

## Use rules and folders for the mail you care about

Start with the guide on [creating a rule in Outlook on Mac](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/create-a-rule-in-outlook). Many people turn off Focused Inbox because they want one list and more control over what stands out. Rules can do part of that job. A rule can move newsletters to a folder, flag messages from a client, or sort mail by sender. Then add [a folder](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/create-a-folder-in-outlook) for mail you read later. [Search with filters](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/search-with-filters-in-outlook) helps when one message is hard to find.

## What to do next

Turn the setting off, then check your inbox for a day or two. If you miss mail, turn Focused Inbox back on and compare the two views. If the All Accounts view looks wrong, click each account's Inbox first, then contact Microsoft support from the Help menu. If you still use the old app, switch to new Outlook before you change anything else, because the legacy path may be gone.

## If it does not work

- **I cannot find the View tab.** Check that the Legacy Outlook switch in the top-right corner is off. Legacy mode uses a different layout, and the new app has the View tab.
- **The menu says Turn on Focused Inbox.** The feature is already off, so you are done. Select Turn on Focused Inbox only if you want the tabs back.
- **Mail seems missing from All Accounts.** Click each account's Inbox on its own. If the mail appears there, only the combined view is affected. Then use Help > Contact Support.
- **The setting is greyed out.** Ask IT whether a policy sets DisableFocusedInbox or FocusedInboxOffByDefault. A blocked setting needs an admin change, not a menu click.
- **I use legacy Outlook and see no Focused inbox control.** Microsoft set legacy support to end in October 2026. Turn off the Legacy Outlook switch to move to new Outlook, then follow the View tab steps.
- **A message from a client landed in Clutter after I turned it off.** Clutter keeps messages that were already there. Open Clutter, find the message, and move it to your Inbox. Then set a rule for that sender.

## FAQ

### Can I turn off Focused Inbox in Outlook on Mac without the View tab?

In new Outlook for Mac, the View tab is the documented route. Microsoft's Mac article names it, and no other Mac menu is documented. On Outlook on the web, use Settings, then Mail, then Message List instead.

### Is there a keyboard shortcut to turn off Focused Inbox on Mac?

Microsoft's Outlook for Mac keyboard shortcut article has no entry for Focused Inbox. Use the View tab. It takes two clicks once Outlook is open.

### Why does my menu say Turn on Focused Inbox?

That means the feature is already off. Select Turn on Focused Inbox only if you want the Focused and Other tabs back, and only if your IT team allows it.

### What happens to messages in the Clutter folder?

Focused Inbox replaces Clutter. Messages already in Clutter stay there until you delete or move them. Check that folder before you assume a message is gone.

### Does Focused Inbox work with shared mailboxes?

Microsoft says Focused Inbox does not work with shared mailboxes, and it describes that as by design. Plan your shared mailbox around that limit, and use rules or folders for the mail you need to see first.

### Why is my Focused Inbox toggle greyed out?

Your IT team may have set a policy. FocusedInboxOffByDefault can set it off for new Outlook, and DisableFocusedInbox blocks viewing and needs a configuration profile. Ask IT which one applies.

### Will legacy Outlook still work after October 2026?

Microsoft says legacy support ends in October 2026. SMU IT says legacy Outlook for Mac stops working on October 1, 2026. That date has passed, so switch to new Outlook now.

### Should I turn off Focused Inbox at all?

It depends on how you read mail. If you miss messages from people you know, turning it off helps. If you like a shorter list, leave it on and check the Other tab once a day.
