To turn on categories in Gmail on Mac, open Gmail in Safari or Chrome, click the gear icon, and set Inbox type to Default under Quick settings. Then click Customize, select the tabs you want, and click Save at the bottom.

- Open Gmail, click the gear icon, then choose Default under Inbox type in Quick settings.
- Click Customize, select Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates, or Forums, then click Save.

Applies to: Gmail in Safari or Chrome on macOS, and Apple Mail on macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later. Time: 5 min. Difficulty: Easy.

## What you need

- A personal or work Google account that uses Gmail
- Safari or Chrome on macOS
- A few minutes and access to the Gmail web page at mail.google.com

## How to Turn on categories in Gmail on Mac in Gmail on a Mac

1. **Open Gmail in Safari or Chrome.** (Address bar > mail.google.com) Open Safari or Chrome on your Mac and go to mail.google.com. Sign in to the Google account whose inbox you want to sort. Tip: If the page looks different from these steps, reload it once, then start again from the gear icon.
2. **Click the gear icon.** (Gear icon, top right) Click the gear icon at the top right of the Gmail window. The Quick settings panel opens. Tip: Quick settings is a short menu. It is not the full Settings page.
3. **Set Inbox type to Default.** (Gear icon > Quick settings > Inbox type > Default) In Quick settings, find Inbox type and choose Default. Categories only show when this option is set to Default. Tip: Priority Inbox, Unread first, and other inbox types do not show the tabs.
4. **Open Customize.** (Gear icon > Quick settings > Customize) Click Customize. A dialog opens with the five standard categories: Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates, and Forums. Tip: If Customize is missing, go back to the Inbox type step and confirm it is set to Default.
5. **Select the tabs you want.** (Customize dialog > Categories) Select one or more categories in the Customize dialog. Select Include starred in Primary only if you want starred mail to stay in Primary. Tip: Gmail does not support custom categories. Only the five standard tabs appear in this list.
6. **Click Save.** (Customize dialog > Save) Click Save at the bottom of the Customize window. Your selected tabs appear across the top of the inbox. Tip: If the tabs do not appear after saving, check the smart features and inbox type sections in the troubleshooting list.
7. **Check your inbox.** Open your inbox and check the top of the page. Each tab you selected should appear there. Tip: If a tab is empty, check your filters before you assume the setting failed.

## What Gmail categories are on a Mac

Gmail categories are the tabs that sort your inbox into groups. Google's standard groups are Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates, and Forums. You cannot make your own. Gmail only offers that fixed list.

This setting lives on the Gmail web page, so you change it in a browser. The steps match Gmail on a Windows PC. Open Safari or Chrome, go to mail.google.com, and sign in.

Google says 3 billion users rely on Gmail. That figure comes from Google's own January 2026 post, and the company does not say whether it counts monthly users. It tells you Gmail is big, not how your tabs will behave.

- **250,000** Emails in an inbox above which Google says the Default inbox type is unavailable ([source](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/3094499?hl=en))
- **3 billion** Gmail users, according to Google's own claim in January 2026 ([source](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/gmail/gmail-is-entering-the-gemini-era/))

## Turn on categories in Gmail on Mac, step by step

![Person at a laptop on a desk, reading email in a browser window](https://images.lazur.app/content-images/howto/turn-on-categories-tabs-in-gmail/how-to-turn-on-categories-in-gmail-1-f50ad7.jpg)

Work through the steps in order. Each one names the menu you should see on screen. If a menu looks different, reload the page and start again from the gear icon.

You will not find a keyboard shortcut for this setting in Google's help pages. Every step here uses the mouse or trackpad.

## Pick the tabs that fit how you work

You can select one tab or all five. Gmail does not let you create a sixth tab with your own rules. Start with the standard list and change it later.

Two options change what you see. The Include starred in Primary checkbox keeps starred mail in Primary. New-mail notifications only cover the Primary tab, so alerts for other tabs may not reach you.

Archived emails do not appear in categories. Archive a message and it leaves the tabs. Search still finds it, so nothing is lost.

## Use the full Settings page instead

If Quick settings does not show the options you need, open the full Settings page. Click the gear icon, then See all settings. Open the Inbox tab, set Inbox type to Default, and click Save changes.

That second route comes from Inbox Zero, a third party blog, not from Google. Google's help page describes Quick settings and Customize. Both routes change the same Inbox type setting.

| Route | Starts at | Finish with |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Quick settings (Google's help page) | Gear icon, then Quick settings | Save at the bottom of the Customize window |
| Full Settings (third party guide) | Gear icon, then See all settings, then Inbox tab | Save changes |
| Apple Mail (a different app) | View menu in the menu bar | Show Mail Categories |

_Where each route starts and finishes. Apple Mail is a separate app._

## Turn on smart features if tabs still do not show

Tabs depend on more than one setting. Inbox Zero's guide lists four conditions that must all be true. Inbox type must be Default, at least one category must be on, smart features must be on, and no admin restriction can block them.

To check smart features, click the gear icon, then See all settings, then General. Find Smart features in Gmail, Chat and Meet and turn it on. Then look for Google Workspace smart features as well.

Reload Gmail after each change. That shows you which change made the difference, so you do not change three things at once and guess.

## Why tabs disappear even after setup

Some inbox views hide the tabs. Inbox Zero says Priority Inbox, Unread first, and Multiple Inboxes turn off the classic tabs view, even with categories on. Google's help page does not confirm the Multiple Inboxes claim, so test it yourself.

![Man working on a MacBook with an email inbox open on the screen](https://images.lazur.app/content-images/howto/turn-on-categories-tabs-in-gmail/how-to-turn-on-categories-in-gmail-2-ae0285.jpg)

To fix this, return to Quick settings and choose Default under Inbox type. The tabs come back when the other conditions are met.

Inbox size is the other limit. Google's help says an inbox with more than 250,000 emails cannot use the Default inbox type. Delete or archive mail to get back under that limit.

## A worked example: one inbox, three tabs

Say you run a small shop and get receipts, shipping alerts, and newsletters all day. Start with Primary, Updates, and Promotions. Leave Social and Forums off for now.

Open Quick settings, set Inbox type to Default, and click Customize. Select Primary, Updates, and Promotions, then click Save. Check the inbox and look for the three tabs across the top.

Give it a week of normal use before you judge it. If one sender keeps landing in the wrong tab, make a filter for that sender. The rest of the setup stays simple that way.

## Fix settings that do not save

Sometimes the setting does not stick. Inbox Zero's troubleshooting works in a fixed order. Go through it from the top and test after each step.

1. Turn on smart features under See all settings, then General.
2. Open an incognito window with extensions off, sign in, and test the setting there.
3. Disable extensions one at a time to find the one that blocks saving.
4. Clear cookies and cached data for mail.google.com, then sign in again.
5. Try another browser profile, or try another browser entirely.

## Work and school Google accounts

A work or school account can hide categories for every user in the domain. An admin may have turned off categories or smart features. You cannot change that from your own settings.

Ask your IT team to check the Google Workspace settings for your domain. Tell them that Inbox type is Default, smart features are on, and the tabs still do not show.

## Move mail into the right tab

Mail sometimes lands in a tab you did not expect. Inbox Zero suggests a search to find it. Type category:promotions -in:inbox is:unread in the Gmail search bar and press Return.

That search shows unread Promotions mail that is no longer in your inbox. Read the results before you move anything. Some messages may be ones you want to keep in Promotions.

To send one sender's mail to a fixed tab, make a filter with the Categorize as action. The [filter guide](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/create-a-filter-in-gmail) has the menu steps. Check your existing filters too. A filter that archives or labels mail can make a tab look empty.

## Apple Mail has its own categories

![Person at a Mac learning how to turn on categories in Gmail](https://images.lazur.app/content-images/howto/turn-on-categories-tabs-in-gmail/how-to-turn-on-categories-in-gmail-3-9e3f73.jpg)

Apple Mail is a separate app, so the Gmail steps do not apply to it. Apple's support page says the categories feature needs macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later. Check your version under Apple menu > About This Mac first.

To show categories, open Mail and choose View > Show Mail Categories from the menu bar. The same setting sits behind the View Options button in the Mail toolbar. Apple Mail uses four categories: Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions.

Clicking the selected category button stops filtering for that category. That lets you see every message again. Use it when a message seems to be missing from its tab.

If you want Gmail in Apple Mail instead, add the account there. The [steps for adding Gmail to Apple Mail](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/use-gmail-in-apple-mail-in-gmail) are on our site.

## Turn categories off again

Google's help says you turn categories off by changing your inbox type. Open Quick settings and choose any inbox type other than Default. The tabs go away. You can switch back at any time.

## Common mistakes that waste time

- Choosing Customize and forgetting to click Save at the bottom.
- Picking Priority Inbox and expecting the tabs to show. They will not.
- Looking for custom categories. Gmail only offers the five standard tabs.
- Searching for a keyboard shortcut. Google's help pages do not list one for this setting.
- Mixing up Gmail with Apple Mail. The two have different categories and different menus.

## Next steps once your tabs are on

Keep your setup simple once the tabs show. Review Promotions every few days. Move a sender out of the way only when you are sure you want that.

If you want to group mail in other ways, use labels. The [label guide](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/create-a-label-in-gmail) covers Safari and Chrome. To stop a sender for good, read the [block a sender guide](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/block-a-sender-in-gmail).

Categories sort the inbox you already have. Labels and filters handle the rest of your organization.

## If it does not work

- **Tabs are missing after you click Customize** Check Inbox type first. It must read Default. Open the gear icon, then Quick settings, choose Default, and open Customize again.
- **The inbox shows Priority Inbox or Unread first** Those views hide the tabs, according to Inbox Zero. Switch Inbox type back to Default.
- **Your inbox holds more than 250,000 emails** Google says the Default inbox type is unavailable above that size. Delete or archive mail until you are under the limit.
- **Settings do not save or keep reverting** Turn on smart features, then test in an incognito window with extensions off. Disable extensions one at a time, clear cookies for mail.google.com, sign in again, or try another browser.
- **A work or school account has no categories option** An admin may have turned categories off for the domain. Ask your IT team. You cannot fix that alone.
- **Mail sits in the wrong tab** Search category:promotions -in:inbox is:unread to find it. Then make a filter with the Categorize as action.

## FAQ

### Can I turn on Gmail categories in the Gmail app on iPhone?

Google's help page for categories only gives steps for the computer version. It does not list separate steps for the Gmail mobile app on iPhone or Android. Use the Gmail web page at mail.google.com on your Mac for the steps in this guide.

### Why don't I see any tabs in Gmail on my Mac?

Usually the inbox type is wrong, smart features are off, or an admin has turned categories off. Check those in that order, starting with the inbox type under Quick settings.

### Can I create my own Gmail category?

No. Gmail's categories are Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates, and Forums. Custom categories are not supported. Labels and filters are the tools for sorting mail in other ways.

### Do categories change new-mail alerts?

Yes, in a limited way. New-mail notifications only cover the Primary category, according to Google's help page. Alerts for the other tabs may not show up.

### Is there a keyboard shortcut for turning on categories?

Not that I could find in Google's help pages. Use the gear icon and Quick settings instead. Gmail's general keyboard shortcuts are a separate setting, covered in our [keyboard shortcuts guide](https://www.lazur.app/how-to/turn-on-keyboard-shortcuts-in-gmail).

### Why can't I choose Default when my inbox is huge?

Google says that if your inbox has more than 250,000 emails, you cannot use the Default inbox type. Delete or archive emails to get under the limit. Then return to Quick settings and try again.

### Is Apple Mail the same as Gmail categories?

No. Apple Mail has its own four categories: Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. The feature needs macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later, and you find it under View in the menu bar.

### Do archived emails show in categories?

No. Google's help page says archived emails do not appear in categories. Search still finds them, so use search to bring an archived message back into view.
