What to check before you switch away from Aqua Voice

Start with the job, not the brand. Most people who leave Aqua Voice want one of three things. They want dictation that lands at the cursor, they want audio kept off someone else's server, or they want help with what is on screen.

Next, list the apps where you dictate most. Mail, Slack, a code editor or a browser are common. Test each candidate in those apps. A plain text box hides the problems you hit every day, such as names and product terms.

  • Dictation at the cursor: text should land where your cursor sits, in any app, without copy and paste.
  • Privacy: whether audio leaves the Mac, and what the policy says about storage and training.
  • Price: the free allowance, the monthly cost, and whether a one-time option exists.
  • Extra help: answers about your screen, timers, or transcribing recordings.

Write this list before you open a single website. It stops you from buying the app with the nicest homepage. Then score each candidate against it, one row at a time.

Aqua Voice alternatives for Mac, one by one

Four apps stand beside Aqua Voice in this comparison. Each one is strong at something different. Read the section that matches your work first, then check the table for the rest.

Lazur: a voice assistant that sees your screen

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold fn to dictate clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app. Dictation is included, and it is not the headline. Snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots come with it.

The bigger difference is the screen. Hold ⌥⌘ to ask about anything on screen, and Lazur answers out loud. Ask where something is and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to do something and Lazur guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click.

Lazur does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. Everyday tasks work by voice: timers, Apple Reminders, Calendar events, notes, music and volume, opening apps and links, web search and Shortcuts. Research runs in Lazur's own Chrome tabs and returns a summary and a report.

Platform: macOS on Apple silicon and Intel. Windows is planned, not available. The trial is 3-day Pro, with no credit card, and it starts when you first open the app. Pro costs $18 a month, or $15 a month billed annually, with 150 AI actions. Power costs $120 a month, or $96 billed annually, with 1,000 AI actions.

Where Lazur is weaker: it does not list offline use, file transcription or a team plan. If you need those, Superwhisper or MacWhisper fits better. Lazur is the better pick when the screen help matters more than the dictation itself.

Wispr Flow: a weekly free tier and the widest device list

Wispr Flow lists dictation on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Its free tier is limited to 2,000 words per week. Flow Pro offers unlimited dictation. The pricing page lists Pro at $15 per user per month billed monthly, or $12 per user per month billed annually.

Pro also adds a shared dictionary, snippets, a team workspace and team usage analytics. Growth adds SSO (SAML), org-wide HIPAA enforcement with a signed BAA, and admin control over model training for the whole team. Growth's page shows two unlabeled prices, so ask sales for a quote.

The homepage says your data is never sold, and that you choose whether data helps improve Flow. It lists SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and ISO 27001 certification. Retention, audio storage and encryption are not on that page. If you handle client or patient audio, ask those questions in writing first.

Where Wispr is better: its platform list matches Aqua Voice's, and its free tier resets weekly, which makes it easier to judge than a single word count. A review by Digital Applied, an agency that sells AI tool services, reports reliability complaints and says Wispr has no on-device option. Treat that as one opinion, and test the app on your own work.

Superwhisper: offline dictation with local models

Superwhisper is the offline option in this group. Its privacy policy says that when you use a local model, your audio and transcripts never leave your device. Cloud audio is processed in memory and is not stored after the request completes.

The homepage lists offline transcription, custom vocabulary, modes for Voice, Message and Email, a Custom Mode, push to talk, Super Mode, a meeting assistant and file transcription. It translates from 100+ languages to English. It runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, and it connects to Slack, Cursor and Notion.

Pricing needs care. The homepage shows Free at $0 and a Pro price of $849 with a 40% student discount. That $849 looks like a display error. The pricing page returned a 404 when checked, so the paid price is unconfirmed here. See their pricing page before you decide.

G2 lists Superwhisper at 4.3 out of 5 from 34 reviews, though that page showed no review text. Digital Applied calls Superwhisper the cheapest option and the only on-device one, and it also says the setup is steep. Plan time to choose and install a local model before you need it.

MacWhisper: files first, with everything kept on the Mac

MacWhisper is built around files. It transcribes mp3, wav, m4a, mov, mp4 and more. It handles 100 languages, speaker recognition, batch processing, and subtitle and document exports. Watched folders are included, so new recordings can be picked up automatically.

It records Zoom, Teams, Webex and Discord meetings. Integrations include Notion, Zapier and Obsidian, plus a CLI. You can add your own API keys with Ollama or LM Studio. The site says it uses local models to transcribe your files, and that sensitive content never leaves your Mac.

The free tier is labeled free forever. Pro is a one-time purchase of €64 per license, with lifetime updates, according to macwhisper.com. The Gumroad listing showed no price or features when checked, so confirm the price at checkout and do not rely on that page alone.

MacWhisper is not a live dictation tool. A review by LumeVoice, a company that makes a competing app, criticizes weak live dictation and memory strain on 8 GB Macs when you run large models. It also notes the app is Mac-only. Read that as one competitor's view, and test the live features yourself.

How accurate is speech compared with typing?

Speech is faster for short messages, but it is not automatically cleaner. In a study of touchscreen phones, speech entry was 2.93 times faster than a keyboard for English. Speakers managed 153 words per minute, against 52 on the keyboard. The study used short messages, so a desktop document may differ.

The same study measured a corrected error rate of 5.30% for speech and 11.22% for keyboard. The uncorrected error rate in final text was 1.30% for speech and 0.79% for keyboard. Speech left slightly more errors in the final text. Fixing them costs time, so the speed gain shrinks when you proof a lot.

Use this as context, not as a score for any app. The abstract page reports no sample size. To measure your own speed, run the typing speed test at /tools/typing-speed-test, then try the speaking vs typing test at /tools/speaking-vs-typing-test. Compare those results with the time you spend fixing dictated text.

Privacy: where your audio goes in each app

Privacy is where these apps differ most. Read the policy, not only the homepage. Aqua Voice's homepage says that with Privacy Mode on, nothing is stored on its servers at all. Its privacy policy, effective October 20, 2026, says transcript data may be stored on its servers when Privacy Mode is off.

Superwhisper's policy is the most specific in this group. Local model audio and transcripts never leave the device. Cloud audio is not stored after processing and is not used for training. Its policy says data in transit is encrypted, but it does not state at-rest encryption.

MacWhisper keeps local model work on the Mac, according to its site. Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models. Lazur does not list an offline mode.

Wispr Flow says your data is never sold, and that you choose whether it helps improve Flow. Retention and encryption are not on its homepage. Ask before you use it for regulated work, and keep a copy of the answer.

The common mistake is treating offline as a switch that covers everything. Superwhisper keeps audio on the device only when you use a local model. A cloud model sends audio off the Mac, so check which model is selected before you dictate sensitive text.

Pricing: what each app costs, and where the numbers are unclear

Start with the price you pay every month, not the headline. Aqua Voice lists Pro at 10 per month billed annually, or 12 per month billed monthly. Max is 19 annual or 24 monthly. Business is 19 per seat per month billed annually, with a two-seat minimum. The page shows no currency symbol, so check the currency before you compare.

Check the gap between annual and monthly billing first. On Aqua Voice Pro, annual billing works out to 2 less per month than monthly. On Lazur Pro, annual is $15 against $18. Pick annual only when you know you will use the app for the full year.

Wispr Flow lists Pro at $15 per user per month billed monthly, or $12 billed annually. Team plans multiply by seat count. Growth shows two unlabeled price pairs on its page, so ask for a quote instead of guessing which one applies.

MacWhisper's Pro is a one-time €64 per license, which suits people who dislike subscriptions. Superwhisper's paid price is unconfirmed here. See their pricing page before you budget for it.

Lazur's trial starts when you first open the app, not when you install it. Open it on the day you need it. Pro includes 150 AI actions, and Power includes 1,000. Dictation is unlimited on both plans, so only questions and actions count against the allowance.

How to test an alternative on your own Mac in one afternoon

A short test beats a long read. Set aside one afternoon, and use the same apps every time. Keep the same paragraph so the results compare fairly.

  1. Open System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation and note Apple's built-in settings. It is free, so it gives you a baseline.
  2. Dictate the same paragraph into Mail, then into Slack, then into a browser text box. Count the fixes you make each time.
  3. Test hard words: names, product names and code terms. Add them to the personal dictionary in Lazur, or the custom dictionary in Aqua Voice or Superwhisper.
  4. Turn on the strictest privacy option each app offers, then repeat the second step. Compare the fix counts.
  5. Open the pricing page for the plan you would actually use. Note the currency and the billing period before you decide.

For a quick accuracy check, the /tools/dictation-accuracy-checker page scores your own text. Run the same words through Apple's built-in dictation and each app on this page. Use the same microphone for every run, or the results will not match.

If Apple's built-in dictation is enough for your work, you may not need a paid app. See /compare/lazur-vs-apple-dictation for when the free option holds up, and when it does not.

Mistakes people make when they switch from Aqua Voice

  • Comparing free tiers by number alone. Aqua Voice lists 1,000 words with no period. Wispr Flow lists 2,000 words per week. Compare them over one real week of work.
  • Trusting a company benchmark. Aqua Voice reports 97.4% key-term accuracy on AISpeak-10, a test it runs itself. Digital Applied says that figure is not comparable with other tools.
  • Trusting an odd price on a homepage. Superwhisper's homepage shows $849 for Pro, which looks like an error. Use the company's pricing page, or ask the company.
  • Assuming Windows support is coming soon. Lazur runs on macOS only, and Windows is planned, not available. If you also use a PC, check each app's platform list first.
  • Mixing up dictation with transcription. Dictation types as you speak. MacWhisper turns finished recordings into text. Pick the tool for the job you do most.

Using two apps together without paying twice

Some people run two tools. A file transcriber such as MacWhisper handles interviews and lectures, and a live assistant handles everyday typing. That split avoids paying for one app to do two jobs badly.

It also means two privacy policies to read. Keep recorded files on the Mac, and use cloud dictation only for text you would share anyway. Write down which app handles which job, so nobody on your team guesses.

Next steps once you pick one

Start with a trial. Lazur's 3-day Pro trial needs no card, and the clock starts at first open. Read Aqua Voice's privacy policy before you turn off Privacy Mode. Then compare the side-by-side pages: /compare/lazur-vs-aqua-voice, /compare/lazur-vs-wispr-flow, /compare/lazur-vs-super-whisper and /compare/lazur-vs-macwhisper.

Ready to try Lazur on your Mac? Get it from /download, and see plan details at /pricing. Either way, keep the test paragraph and the fix counts. They tell you more than any table.

Questions people ask

Is there a free Aqua Voice alternative for Mac?

Yes. Wispr Flow has a free tier of 2,000 words per week. MacWhisper's site labels its free tier free forever. Superwhisper's homepage lists Free at $0. Lazur offers a 3-day Pro trial with no credit card. Aqua Voice's own free tier lists 1,000 words.

Which Aqua Voice alternative works offline?

Superwhisper and MacWhisper both use local models, which keep audio on the Mac when you choose them. Superwhisper's policy says local model audio never leaves the device. Digital Applied says Wispr Flow has no on-device option. Lazur does not list an offline mode, so test it without a connection before you rely on it.

Does Lazur replace Aqua Voice for dictation?

For dictation at the cursor, yes. Hold fn in any app and Lazur types clean, formatted text. Dictation is included on both Lazur plans and is unlimited. Lazur also answers questions about your screen when you hold ⌥⌘. Aqua Voice lists Deep Context, which may cover something similar, so check what it reads in a trial.

Is MacWhisper good for live dictation?

Not as its main use. MacWhisper is built to transcribe files, with batch processing, speaker recognition and exports. A competing app's review criticizes its live dictation. For typing into email or chat, pick a dictation app, and keep MacWhisper for recordings.

Is Wispr Flow safe for client or patient audio?

Ask before you rely on it. Wispr's homepage lists SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and ISO 27001 certification. Its Growth plan offers a signed BAA for HIPAA. Retention, audio storage and encryption are not on the homepage, so get those answers in writing from Wispr.

Why can't I find Superwhisper's paid price?

Its pricing page returned a 404 when checked. Its homepage shows Pro as $849 with a 40% student discount, which looks like a display error. Third-party sites quote other figures, but the company's own pages do not confirm them. Check the company's pricing page or contact the company.

Is speech really faster than typing?

For short messages on touchscreen phones, one study found so. Speech entry ran 2.93 times faster than a keyboard for English, at 153 words per minute against 52. Speech also left slightly more errors in the final text. The study is from 2016 and used phones, so test your own Mac work.

Does Aqua Voice store my transcripts?

It depends on Privacy Mode. Aqua Voice's privacy policy says it may store transcript data on its servers when Privacy Mode is disabled. Its homepage says that with Privacy Mode on, nothing is stored on its servers at all. The policy does not address model training or encryption.
