MacWhisper Pro, paid once, with lifetime updates, per its own site
MacWhisper is a file and meeting tool first. It transcribes audio and video, records meetings without a bot joining, and adds AI summaries. It also offers system-wide dictation. Many people buy it for the transcripts, then find they want something else.
The usual reasons are simple. Some people want dictation that types into an email or a document as they speak, not a transcript they copy later. Others want help with the Mac itself, like finding a button or setting a timer. A few want offline dictation on a model they control, or a team plan with shared settings.
Before you switch, name your reason. The reason tells you which app to test first. A tool that wins on file transcription can lose badly on live dictation, and the reverse is true too.

How the prices and features were checked
Prices on this page were checked on 2026-11-06, except Lazur, whose product facts are dated 2026-11-05. Each competitor price is copied from its own pricing page or billing docs. Where a page did not show a clean price, the product card says so.
MacWhisper's Gumroad listing did not show readable price text when we checked it. Its price comes from macwhisper.com instead. Superwhisper's /pricing page returned a 404, so its prices come from its billing docs. The withaqua.com address redirects to aquavoice.com/pricing.
MacWhisper: strong on files, meetings and local models
MacWhisper's own site calls itself the all-in-one Mac app to transcribe it all. It lists file and video transcription, meeting recording without bots, system-wide dictation, speaker recognition and AI summaries. It also has watched folders and a command line tool.
Its privacy claim is specific. With local models, sensitive content is processed on the Mac, and the site says that data never leaves your Mac. Cloud AI providers are a separate choice, and they do receive data. Check which model is selected before you record a client call.
Where it falls short is live dictation. A review run by a competitor, Voibe, calls MacWhisper primarily a file tool rather than real-time dictation. Treat that as one opinion. The feature list on MacWhisper's own site points the same way.
Its site does not list a current app version or a minimum macOS version. Check the download page before you buy, especially if you run an older Mac.
Lazur: a voice assistant that sees your screen
Lazur lives in the notch on your Mac. Hold ⌥ ⌘, which is Option and Command together, to ask about anything on screen. Lazur answers out loud. Ask where something is, and it draws a circle and a label around that spot on your screen.
Ask how to do something, and Lazur guides you one click at a time. It waits for each click. It does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. That limit matters. Lazur explains and points. You do the clicking.
Dictation is included, but it is not the headline. Hold fn to dictate clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app. You also get snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots.
Everyday tasks work by voice too. Lazur handles timers, Apple Reminders, Calendar events, notes, music and volume, opening apps and links, web search and Shortcuts. Research runs in Lazur's own Chrome tabs through the Lazur for Chrome extension, and it comes back with a summary and a report.
Wispr Flow: polished dictation on Mac, Windows and phones
Wispr Flow is a dictation tool for most of your devices. Its homepage lists dictation on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Notetaker runs on Mac and Windows. It works with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Slack huddles and in-person meetings.
It removes filler words and adds punctuation. It has a personal dictionary, snippets with spoken shortcuts and a writing style for each app. Its homepage headline says it is 4x faster than typing. That is a vendor claim with no stated method, so test it on your own writing.
Reviewers mostly like the cleanup. Nick Lafferty writes that he writes much faster with it. He also says the keyboard is still better for detailed edits and tables. Both points are opinions, and they match how dictation tends to work.
The privacy trade-off is real. Wispr's privacy page says transcription always happens in the cloud. Audio is discarded once it is transcribed, unless cloud storage is on. Its context awareness reads limited text from the app you dictate into, so names and jargon come out right.
Its pricing page lists two Growth prices without labels, $23 and $33 per user per month billed monthly. Ask Wispr which one applies before you budget for a team.
Superwhisper: local models and a free offline tier
Superwhisper is the strongest choice here if offline use matters. Its free plan includes unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, custom vocabulary and text replacements. Its billing docs say nothing you dictate leaves your device on that plan.
Pro adds more modes with AI processing, plus file transcription. One Pro license works on all your devices, including unlimited Macs and Windows PCs, plus iPhone and Android phones. The lifetime plan costs $249.99 once.
Setup takes more care. Superwhisper needs macOS 13.3 or later, according to its download page. Its privacy policy says local recordings stay on your device until you delete them, which is the default. Reviewers have flagged that folder, so check it after your first session.
Its homepage lists integrations with coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code and Codex. A tl;dv review, from a company that sells a meeting product, reports about 98% accuracy on plain text and about 88% on hard technical speech. Treat that as one reviewer's test, not a benchmark.
Aqua Voice: cloud dictation with team controls
Aqua Voice runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Its free plan gives you 1,000 words. Pro gives unlimited dictation, custom instructions and a personal dictionary. Max adds Realtime Mode, Voice Commands and early access.
Its Business plan adds team billing, SSO, usage reports, Zero Data Retention and shared dictionaries. Business has a minimum of 2 seats. The pricing page says to contact sales above 20 users, while the FAQ says 100 or more seats. Ask before you plan a rollout.
The privacy picture is split. With Privacy Mode on, transcript data is not collected. With it off, transcripts may be stored to improve the product. The policy says Aqua processes audio inputs, but it does not say whether audio leaves your Mac. Reviewers call it cloud-only.
Aqua claims SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, GDPR and HIPAA compliance, with a BAA available on Max and Business. Those are its own claims. Read the agreement before you send client or patient data through any dictation app.

Price comparison: what each app costs to start
Start with the price model, because it changes the math. MacWhisper and Superwhisper's lifetime plan are one payment. Lazur, Wispr Flow and Aqua Voice bill monthly or yearly. Superwhisper also sells monthly and annual plans. The comparison table below lists every price.
Here is a worked example. Say you want to dictate every weekday for a full year. Wispr Flow's annual Pro is $12/user/month. Aqua Voice's Pro is $10/month billed annually. Lazur's Pro is $15/month billed annually. Multiply each monthly rate by 12 to compare them, then check whether tax applies at checkout.
Superwhisper's lifetime plan is $249.99 once. If you use it for years, that one price can beat a monthly plan. The free plan may be enough if you only need local dictation.
MacWhisper's Pro is €64 once, with lifetime updates. Because it is priced in euros, convert it at checkout before you compare it with dollar prices. Do not guess the exchange rate.
Lazur's Pro is $18/month, or $15/month billed annually, with 150 AI actions. Power is $120/month, or $96/month billed annually, with 1,000 AI actions. Dictation is unlimited on both. You get a 3-day Pro trial with no credit card, and it starts when you first open the app. See Lazur pricing for the full details.
Privacy: where your audio goes
Privacy is where these apps differ most. Ask one question for each app: does my audio leave the Mac? The answer is yes, no, or it depends on the model you pick.
MacWhisper: depends on the model. Local models keep data on the Mac. Cloud AI providers receive data.
Lazur: audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models.
Wispr Flow: transcription happens in the cloud. Audio is discarded after transcription unless cloud storage is on.
Superwhisper: local models keep audio on the device. Cloud models process audio in memory and do not store it after the request.
Aqua Voice: depends on Privacy Mode. Its policy does not say whether audio leaves your Mac.
Lazur's listening rule is simple. It listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. That is a rule about when, not where. The audio and screenshot still go to an AI provider to get an answer.
Superwhisper's stored data deserves a look too. Its privacy policy keeps server logs for 30 days, crash reports for up to 90 days, and problem reports for 90 days. Problem reports include audio and transcripts, so read the retention section before you report a bug.
Which Mac alternative fits your work
Pick by the job, not by the logo. Three common cases show how the choice plays out. Each one assumes you have tested the app on real work first.
You record interviews and need searchable transcripts. Start with MacWhisper. Its file and video transcription and speaker recognition fit that work. Test the local model on one real recording before you trust it with a deadline.
You write emails and documents all day and want to talk instead of type. Test Wispr Flow or Aqua Voice. Both are built for dictation at the cursor. Wispr also has a free plan with a weekly word cap, so you can try it before you pay.
You want a voice helper that answers questions about what is on screen. Lazur is built for that. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask where the export button is. Lazur circles it, then talks you through the steps. It will not click for you, so keep your hand on the mouse.
You work offline or on a network that blocks cloud tools. Start with Superwhisper and its local Whisper models. Download the model you want while you are online, then test it with airplane mode on.
Edge cases worth testing before you commit
Test in a noisy room, not only a quiet desk. Dictation tools handle background noise differently. Say the same paragraph twice, once near a fan or a café and once in a quiet room. Count how many words you have to fix in each.
Test names, product names and technical terms. Reviewers describe proper-noun handling as a major difference between apps. Dictate your client names, code terms and acronyms. Then check whether the app spells them the same way each time.
Test long dictation, not one sentence. Some apps clean up a short phrase well and then drift over a full page. Dictate at least three paragraphs, then read them back. Look for changed numbers and meaning, not only typos.
Mistakes people make when switching
Switching on the lowest monthly price. Compare the plan you actually need, including the seat count and the features on that tier.
Testing with short phrases. Dictate a full page or a real meeting before you decide.
Skipping the privacy setting. Aqua's Privacy Mode and Wispr's cloud storage setting change what gets stored.
Counting on Lazur for Windows. Lazur is macOS only, and Windows is planned, not available.
Forgetting that a trial has a clock. Lazur's 3-day trial starts when you first open the app.
Buying a lifetime plan before testing. Superwhisper's free plan lets you test local dictation first.
Many dictation apps need permission to hear you and to type into other apps. Check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone after you install. If text does not appear, check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility too.
What to do next
Pick two apps from this list and run each one on the same work for a day. Use the same microphone and the same room. Count how many words you fix by hand. The app with fewer fixes is usually the better fit.
Open each pricing page and copy the current price. Check the currency before you compare.
Test dictation in the apps you use daily, such as Mail, Notes or Pages. Use three paragraphs, not one sentence.
Turn on the privacy setting you care about before you dictate client or patient data.
Check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone so each app can hear you.
If you want help with what is on screen, download Lazur and start the 3-day trial.
If you are still unsure, read the side-by-side pages. Lazur vs MacWhisper covers the file tool versus the live voice assistant. Superwhisper vs Wispr Flow covers local models against cloud dictation.
Questions people ask
Is there a free alternative to MacWhisper for Mac?
Yes. MacWhisper's own site lists a free plan at €0, described as free forever. Superwhisper's free plan includes unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, but only up to 2 modes with no AI processing. Wispr Flow's homepage lists 2,000 words per week on its free plan. Aqua Voice's free plan includes 1,000 words.
Which MacWhisper alternative works offline?

Does Lazur click buttons for me?
No. Lazur does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. When you ask how to do something, it guides you one click at a time and waits for each click. It can also circle where something is on your screen.
Which app is best for privacy?
It depends on the model and the setting you use. Superwhisper's local models keep audio on the device. MacWhisper's local models keep data on the Mac, while its cloud providers receive data. Lazur sends audio and the screenshot to AI providers to answer, and says they are not stored.
How current are these prices?
Competitor prices were checked on 2026-11-06. Lazur's prices come from product facts dated 2026-11-05. Prices change, so open each pricing page before you pay. Some pages moved or redirected while we checked.
Is the App Store Whisper Transcription app the same as MacWhisper?
Not necessarily. The App Store listing called Whisper Transcription is a separate product from MacWhisper. Check the publisher name and the price on the page where you buy before you install anything.
Which app should I pick for meetings?
MacWhisper records meetings without a bot joining, and adds AI summaries. Wispr Flow's Notetaker works with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Slack huddles, on Mac and Windows. Superwhisper's meeting assistant is Mac only, and reviewers have flagged where it stores recordings.
Product names belong to their owners. Lazur is not affiliated with MacWhisper, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, Aqua Voice. Prices and features come from each company's own site on the date shown; check there before you buy.
