Superwhisper is a capable dictation app for Mac, and it makes a fair starting point. Look at the alternatives below if one of these is true for you:

  • You want an app that sees your screen and answers out loud.
  • You use an Intel Mac and want on-device dictation to feel fast.
  • You need transcripts of recordings, media links or meetings.
  • You want dictation on Windows, iPhone or Android as well as your Mac.
  • You prefer a one-time price to a monthly plan.

What to check before you switch from Superwhisper

Start with your chip. Choose Apple menu > About This Mac and look for the chip name. Superwhisper says offline models perform well only on Apple silicon Macs. Its homepage says Intel Macs work best with cloud models. Test on your own machine before you decide anything.

Next, check where your audio goes. This matters more than the feature list if you handle client, patient or legal material. Superwhisper's privacy policy says that when you use a local model, audio and transcripts never leave your device. Cloud models send requests to providers such as OpenAI or Anthropic, who process them under their own terms.

Then check microphone access. Every dictation app needs it. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and switch on the app you install. Skip this step and the app records silence, which looks like a broken app.

Lazur: a voice assistant that sees your screen

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold ⌥⌘, which is Option plus Command, and ask about anything on screen. Lazur answers out loud. Ask where something is, and it draws a circle and a label around it on your screen.

Ask how to do something, and Lazur guides you one click at a time. It waits for each click. It does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. If you need a tool that does the clicking, Lazur is the wrong fit, and you should know that before you pay.

Everyday voice actions cover timers, Apple Reminders, Calendar events, notes, music and volume, opening apps and links, web search and Shortcuts. Research runs in Lazur's own Chrome tabs through the Lazur for Chrome extension. It comes back with a summary and a report. Memory of what you asked and did stays on the Mac.

Dictation is included, but it is not the headline. Hold fn to dictate clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app. You also get snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots. Dictation is unlimited on both paid plans.

Lazur has real limits. It runs on macOS, on Apple silicon and Intel. Windows is planned, not available. Its audio and screenshot go to AI providers to answer, and they are not stored. The product facts do not describe an offline mode, so check that before you rely on it without a connection.

Wispr Flow: cloud dictation on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android

Wispr Flow is the closest swap if you mainly dictate. Its dictation runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Its Notetaker runs on Mac and Windows only, and other platforms are marked coming soon. Pro costs $15/user/mo monthly or $12/user/mo annual, according to its pricing page.

The free plan limits dictation to a number of words per week. The page does not give that number. A third-party competitor page says 2,000 words per week on Mac and Windows. Wispr's own help center was not checked, so treat that figure as unconfirmed until you see it on Wispr's site.

Wispr is direct about where audio goes. It says transcription always happens in the cloud for speed and accuracy. Audio is deleted once it is transcribed, unless you turn on Dictation cloud storage. Turn off model training and nothing you say is used to train its models.

Reviews split on it. tl;dv, which sells a competing notetaker, rates Wispr Flow 4.3/5 and calls it one of the most polished AI dictation tools available. The same review criticizes cloud-only processing and free word limits that run out within days. Those are opinions, not lab tests.

Wispr's pricing page claims SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, plus HIPAA-ready dictation with a signed BAA. A tl;dv review says Wispr invalidated earlier certificates. That conflict is unresolved here. Check Wispr's Trust Center before you handle regulated data.

Aqua Voice: AI dictation with a one-hotkey workflow

Aqua Voice is another AI dictation app. A third-party review describes its workflow as one hotkey. Its pricing page lists Pro at $10 / month billed annually or $12 / month month-to-month. Max is $19 / month billed annually or $24 / month month-to-month. Business is $19 / seat / month billed annually, with a minimum of 2 seats.

The free plan gives you 1,000 words total, per the pricing page. Max adds Realtime Mode and Voice Commands. Business adds Zero Data Retention and SSO. The page says Aqua is GDPR and HIPAA compliant and cites SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. PHI handling needs a BAA, which Max and Business include.

Third-party opinions are mixed. One review praises Aqua's screen-aware dictionary for code and prompts. The same review criticizes the small free tier, Realtime Mode limited to Max, cloud-only processing, and Android being waitlist-only, which conflicts with the pricing page. That review also lists prices that differ from the official page, so use the pricing page for numbers.

MacWhisper: file and meeting transcription on your Mac

MacWhisper is Mac-first, and its free tier is listed as free forever at €0/month. Pro is a one-time €64 per license, with lifetime updates, according to the official site. The Gumroad product page showed only the title when we checked, so the official site is the source for prices here. The App Store version is separate, and it does not accept MacWhisper license keys.

MacWhisper transcribes on device. It also offers cloud models and bring-your-own API keys for providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama and LM Studio. It handles files, YouTube and media URLs, and batch jobs. Watched folders and .srt and .vtt export are included. It records Zoom, Teams, Webex, Skype, Chime and Discord meetings with no bots joining.

Two reviewer complaints are worth testing. One says large models need a lot of RAM and Intel Macs run much slower. Another says batch mode does not accept URL files, which conflicts with the official site. Run one batch job on your own media before you rely on it.

Superwhisper pricing and the price of each alternative in 2026

Prices change, so read each pricing page on the day you buy. These are the numbers we could confirm on 2026-11-06. Lazur Pro is $18/month, or $15/month billed annually, with 150 AI actions. Power is $120/month, or $96/month annually, with 1,000 AI actions. Dictation is unlimited on both plans. Lazur also offers a 3-day Pro trial with no credit card.

On monthly plans, Wispr Flow Pro is $15/user/mo and Aqua Voice Pro is $12/month. On annual billing, Wispr Pro is $12/user/mo and Aqua Pro is $10/month. Wispr's Growth plan shows two unexplained figures for each billing period. Check that page before you pick it for a team.

Superwhisper is the gap. Its pricing page returned a 404 when we checked. Its homepage shows a free plan at $0, and the Pro figure did not render cleanly, so we did not use it. The table says See their pricing page for that reason. Open its homepage and check the Monthly, Yearly and Lifetime options yourself.

MacWhisper is priced in euros, and its one-time license changes the math. If you keep an app for years, a one-time price can beat a monthly plan. Work out your own months and your own currency before you decide. Do not trust a third-party price without checking the official page.

Privacy and data handling compared

Superwhisper's privacy policy says local model audio and transcripts never leave your device. Its cloud models do not store audio on its servers after the request completes. Server logs are kept 30 days, and crash and error reports for up to 90 days. Problem reports and shared meeting summaries are exceptions. The policy says your data is not used for training.

Wispr Flow transcribes in the cloud every time. Aqua Voice describes cloud-only processing, and its Business plan adds Zero Data Retention. MacWhisper can process sensitive content locally, without data leaving your Mac. Lazur sends audio and the screenshot to AI providers to answer, does not store them, and says content is never used to train AI models.

A privacy policy says what a company does. It is not an audit. If you handle client, patient or legal material, read the policy and ask your compliance or IT team which app fits. Do not rely on a blog summary, including this page.

Worked example: dictation and transcription in one week

Say you write client emails most days and record a call now and then. Dictation helps most with the emails. Transcription helps most with the calls. A pairing like this covers both jobs. You manage two apps and two bills, so weigh that cost against the time you save.

Here is one split to test. Use Wispr Flow or Aqua Voice for the emails, since both are built for dictation at the cursor. Use MacWhisper for the recorded call. Add Lazur if you often ask where a setting is, because it circles things on screen. Read the same paragraph into each app and compare the text.

Mistakes people make when switching

  • Setting two dictation apps to the same shortcut. Give each app its own key, or the wrong app will catch your voice.
  • Testing a local model on an Intel Mac. Superwhisper says Intel Macs work best with cloud models, so test on your own machine.
  • Skipping microphone access. Check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone after every install.
  • Judging a free plan by its marketing. Wispr's limit is per week, and its site gives no number. Aqua's free tier is 1,000 words total.
  • Trusting a third-party price. Third-party pages list prices that differ from official ones. Check the pricing page on the day you buy.
  • Expecting Lazur to do the clicks. It guides you one click at a time and does not click for you.
  • Expecting Windows support from Lazur. Windows is planned, not available.
