TL;DR
- Voice typing reduces how much you type, which can ease strain on hands and wrists. It does not treat repetitive strain injury.
- In one lab study, speech entry was about 2.93 times faster than a keyboard for short English messages, but it left more uncorrected errors.
- On a Mac, Dictation has no length limit and stops after 30 seconds of silence. Windows voice typing needs an internet connection.
- See a doctor when pain interferes with daily life or work. Voice typing changes the activity. It is not a cure.

Comparing Speech and Keyboard Text Entry for Short Messages in Two Languages on Touchscreen Phones (arXiv)Voice typing can cut how much you type, and that can ease strain on your hands and wrists during text-heavy work. It does not treat repetitive strain injury (RSI), and the research does not show that it heals the injury.
This guide covers what voice typing changes, what it leaves alone, and how to test it on a Mac or a Windows PC. It is not medical advice. If pain lingers or gets worse, see a doctor.

What repetitive strain injury is and why typing matters
Cleveland Clinic defines RSI as damage to muscles, tendons or nerves caused by repetitive motions and constant use. Its main advice is to change or reduce the activity that caused the problem. That idea is the starting point for this topic.
Voice typing does not change your diagnosis. It changes the activity. If most of your day is typing, the same small finger and wrist movements repeat for hours. Dictation swaps some of those movements for speech.
Typing is only one source of repetition. Mouse use, trackpad scrolling and holding a phone all add to the load. Dictation does nothing for those. If your pain comes mostly from the mouse, voice typing will not reach the cause.
Can voice typing treat RSI?
No. Voice typing is not on the treatment list. Cleveland Clinic lists these options:
- Activity modification, which means changing how you work.
- R.I.C.E. for symptoms.
- Over-the-counter NSAIDs. The clinic says to check with a provider before taking them for more than 10 days.
- Physical therapy.
- Occupational therapy, which can help plan a return to work.
- Surgery, which the clinic says is rarely needed.
Voice typing fits under the first item. It is a way to modify your activity. That is useful, but it is one item on a longer list. The rest of the list still applies to you.
The clinic's RSI page was last updated in March 2022. Check for a newer version if you need current guidance.
How common RSI is, and who reports it
The CDC's National Center for Health Statistics reported that 9% of US adults had RSI in the past three months in 2021. That survey covers all adults, not people who dictate. It does not tell you how common RSI is among dictation users. We did not find a figure for that group.
{"type":"stats"}
Of adults with RSI in that window, 44% limited usual activities for at least 24 hours. Of those who limited activities, 51% saw a doctor or other medical professional. Rates were higher for adults aged 35 to 49 (10%) and 50 to 64 (12%).
If pain stops you from working for a full day, treat that as a signal. Cleveland Clinic advises seeing a provider when symptoms interfere with daily activities, including work.
What the research says about speed and accuracy
Two studies give the best numbers we could find. Neither tested dictation as an RSI treatment.
The first is a lab study of short messages on touchscreen phones, in English and Mandarin. In English, speech averaged 153 words per minute. The keyboard averaged 52. That is about 2.93 times faster for speech.
Speed came with a trade-off. This table shows the English numbers from that study.
| Measure (English, short messages) | Speech | Keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| Entry speed (words per minute) | 153 | 52 |
| Corrected errors during entry | 5.30% | 11.22% |
| Uncorrected errors in final text | 1.30% | 0.79% |
Read the last row twice. Speech left more mistakes in the final text. You may type less, but you may read and fix more. The authors wrote that speech performed well "under ideal conditions for both methods." They also wrote that "further study is required to quantify performance in non-laboratory settings."
That second quote matters most for you. Your office is not a lab.
The second study is a cross-sectional survey of 395 bank workers in Recife, Brazil. Data were collected from March to August 2000, and the paper was published in 2005 in BMC Public Health. It found that 56% had upper-limb symptoms and 29.9% had an RSI-like condition. An estimated 22% had clinically confirmed RSI, based on a screening questionnaire. It shows how common arm and hand symptoms are among desk workers. It says nothing about dictation.
We did not find a trial that tested voice typing as an RSI treatment. Some vendor blogs cite large drops in muscle activity. We could not verify those claims, so this article leaves them out.
Built-in voice typing on Mac and Windows
Both major systems include voice typing. They differ in internet use, length limits and languages.
| Option | How you start it | Internet needed | Limits to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac Dictation | Microphone key, the Dictation shortcut, or Edit > Start Dictation | Apple does not state it plainly | Stops after 30 seconds with no speech |
| Windows voice typing | Windows key + H, cursor in a text box | Yes, uses Azure Speech services | Fluid dictation is Copilot+ PC only and English only |
| Windows Voice access | Voice commands, a separate feature | Only to download language files | English, Spanish, French and German only |
Mac Dictation has no length limit. Apple says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout. It stops when it hears no speech for 30 seconds. Start it with the Microphone key, the Dictation shortcut, or Edit > Start Dictation. Stop it with Escape, the Microphone key, or the shortcut. Turn Dictation on first in System Settings > Keyboard.
Punctuation is spoken by name on a Mac. Say "exclamation mark" to insert the mark. Say "new line" for one Return and "new paragraph" for two. Auto-punctuation can add commas, periods and question marks in supported languages. Turn it off in System Settings > Keyboard if it fights your style.
Apple's page does not say plainly whether Dictation works offline. The page is also written for macOS 27, so menu names may differ on older versions. Do not assume offline works. Test it using the steps below.
Windows voice typing works differently. Press Windows key + H with the cursor in a text box. Wait for the "Listening" alert before you speak. Stop by saying "Stop listening" or by pressing the microphone button. It needs internet, because it uses online speech recognition from Azure Speech services.
Fluid dictation is a Windows voice typing feature for Copilot+ PCs. It works in English only and is on by default. It turns off in password and PIN fields. Say "Revert" or "Undo that" to restore the original text.
Windows Voice access is a separate, command-driven feature. It works without internet for everyday use once language files are downloaded. It is available in English, Spanish, French and German. It needs Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, and signing in with it needs version 23H2.

Turn on Dictation on a Mac and test it
Use this short routine. It takes about five minutes. It shows what your Mac does with your voice before you rely on it.
- Open System Settings > Keyboard and turn Dictation on.
- Click into a text field, such as a new note or an email draft.
- Press the Microphone key, press the Dictation shortcut, or choose Edit > Start Dictation.
- Speak two or three sentences. Say "new paragraph" where you want a break.
- Stop with Escape, the Microphone key or the shortcut. Read the result line by line.
- Turn Wi-Fi off from the menu bar, then repeat steps 2 to 5. This is your offline test.
Count the errors you fix in each run. That number is your starting point. Run the test again after a week of use to see if it changes.
What voice typing fixes, and what it leaves alone
Voice typing fits best on long, low-stakes text. First drafts, email replies and meeting notes are good candidates. You type fewer keys, and your fingers spend less time on the keyboard.
It leaves more alone than people expect.
- Mouse and trackpad use. Dictation inserts text. It does not click menus or scroll.
- Starting and stopping. You still press a key to start and stop, so your hand still moves.
- Proofreading. The lab study found more uncorrected errors with speech. You still read the screen.
- Workstation setup. Desk height, screen position and break habits stay the same.
- Symbol-heavy text. Code and brackets are awkward to dictate, because Mac punctuation is spoken by name.
Voice typing reduces one repeated motion. It does not change the rest of your day.
Mistakes people make with voice typing for RSI
- Turning it on and typing the same as before. Dictation helps only when it replaces typing. Pick one task, such as first drafts, and move it to voice.
- Dictating for hours without a break. Speaking all day can tire your voice. The research on voice strain is thin, so stop when your voice tires.
- Trusting the first draft. Speech left more uncorrected errors in the lab study. Read before you send.
- Assuming offline works. Apple does not say so plainly, and Windows voice typing needs internet. Run the test before you depend on either.
- Ignoring pain because the work changed. The clinic's advice to see a provider covers symptoms that affect work. A new method does not change that advice.
- Dictating in a shared room. Coworkers hear you, and background noise can throw off accuracy. A headset and a quiet corner help.
Privacy and noisy rooms
Privacy depends on the system you use. Windows voice typing sends speech to online Azure Speech services. Apple's dictation page refers to a setting that keeps dictated text processed on your device and out of Siri servers. Check that setting on your Mac before you dictate sensitive material.
Apple also says its on-device model that improves punctuation works only in English. It runs only on M3 or later Macs with at least 12GB of unified memory. If you have an older Mac, expect plainer punctuation.
The lab study ran under ideal conditions. Expect more errors with a fan running, traffic outside or people talking nearby. Speak in full phrases. Pause where you would put a comma. Keep the microphone at the same distance each time.
A two-week plan for voice typing with RSI
Week one is for measuring.
- Run the typing speed test once. Write down the score as a baseline.
- Note which tasks are mostly typing. Email and notes are usually the easiest to move to voice.
- Log your pain once a day, on a 0 to 10 scale, at the same time each day.
Week two is for moving one task.
- Dictate first drafts. Type only the edits.
- Keep dictation sessions short, and take breaks between them.
- Try the dictation accuracy checker to see how your speech comes through before you trust a draft.
- Compare your pain log with week one. If it gets worse, stop and talk to a provider.
When to get checked
Cleveland Clinic says to see a provider when symptoms interfere with daily activities, including work. Bring your pain log to that visit. Ask about physical therapy. If work triggers the pain, ask about occupational therapy, which the clinic lists for return-to-work planning.
Where Lazur fits
Lazur does not fix RSI. It is one option if you want dictation that works across apps on your Mac. Hold fn to dictate clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app. Snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots cover the phrases you repeat.
{"type":"lazur"}
Lazur also answers out loud. Hold ⌥ ⌘ to ask about anything on screen. Ask how to do something and Lazur guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click. It does not click buttons or operate apps for you, so you still do the clicking.
Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models.
Lazur runs on macOS, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Windows is planned, not available. The Pro trial lasts 3 days, needs no credit card, and starts when you first open the app. Dictation is unlimited on Pro and Power. Download Lazur to try it on your Mac.
FAQ
Can voice typing cure repetitive strain injury?
No. Voice typing can reduce how much you type, which is one way to change the activity that caused RSI. Cleveland Clinic says changing or reducing that activity is the best treatment, and the rest of the plan belongs with a doctor or physical therapist.
Does Mac Dictation work without an internet connection?
Apple does not state this plainly on its Dictation help page. Turn Wi-Fi off from the menu bar, dictate a test sentence, and check the result before you rely on it offline.
Is voice typing bad for your voice?
Speaking for long periods can tire your voice. The research on voice strain from dictation is thin, so stop when your voice gets tired, and see a doctor if hoarseness does not go away.
Does Lazur replace built-in voice typing on a Mac?
Lazur is an option, not a replacement for the built-in tools. Hold fn to dictate formatted text at the cursor in any app. Dictation is unlimited on the Pro and Power plans, and the Pro trial lasts 3 days with no credit card.
