Thanks for your patience on this. We will confirm the renewal date with you by Thursday. If the date moves, I will let you know the same day. Does Thursday morning work for a quick call?

Quick answer

  • Use one account channel per customer, and share it through Slack Connect when the customer needs to see it.
  • Hand off accounts with a canvas. Build welcome messages and intake forms in Workflow Builder on a paid plan.
  • Use huddles for quick coaching. Free huddles stop at two people, and Mac screen sharing can need a fix.
  • Learn ⌘K and ⌘/ first. Then ask Lazur to walk you through the rest, one click at a time.

How customer success managers use Slack on a Mac

A common customer success setup in Slack has four parts. You run one channel per account, talk with customers in shared channels, hand accounts off with canvases, and send routine messages through Workflow Builder. Slack's own customer success guide describes this pattern. You can copy it today with no extra tools. The rest of this page covers the Mac details and the places where people get stuck.

Your day usually splits into three layers. The first is the account channel, where internal context lives. The second is the shared channel with the customer, if they use Slack. The third is direct messages, for quick questions to your manager or support. Keep those layers apart, and search stays useful. Mixing them makes account history hard to trust.

Set up one account channel per customer

Slack's guide recommends an account channel for each customer. Every account gets one place for context, history and next steps. When a teammate asks what happened last quarter, the answer sits in one channel. It does not sit in scattered direct messages.

Use the same name pattern every time. A prefix such as cs- plus the customer's short name works well, for example cs-example-co. Then ⌘K finds the channel after a few letters. Slack's keyboard help says ⌘K opens a conversation. Type the channel or person's name, then press Return.

What belongs in each account channel

  • Pinned summary: plan, renewal date, main contacts and the open risk. Update it every time one of them changes.
  • A running log of calls, with one line per call and a link to your notes.
  • Customer questions that need a reply, kept in threads so they are easy to find.
  • Internal decisions, such as discounts or escalations, kept out of any shared channel.

The most common mistake is a channel per meeting. Those channels pile up fast. Nobody can tell which one is current. Keep one channel per account, and put dated notes inside it.

Share work with customers using Slack Connect

Slack Connect lets you work with people from other companies inside one channel. Slack's help page says a Slack Connect channel can host up to 250 organizations, including your own. That is plenty of room. The page does not say whether you, your customer or both need a paid plan, so check with your Slack admin first.

Slack's customer success guide shows a practical use. A Workflow Builder message can post onboarding resources when a new person joins a Slack Connect channel. The customer gets the links without you pasting them again. Test the flow in an internal channel before you turn it on for a customer.

  • Confirm plan needs with your Slack admin, since the help page leaves them open.
  • Decide what the customer can see. Keep internal pricing talk in your account channel.
  • Post a short welcome that says who to ask for billing, support and renewals.
  • Review the member list on a regular schedule and remove people who have left their team.

A message in a shared channel reaches people outside your company. Slow down on pricing, legal and escalation topics. Draft those in your own channel first, then move the final text across.

Hand off accounts with canvases

Slack's guide says canvases can carry an account when a rep leaves, or when sales hands a deal to customer success. A canvas is a document inside Slack. The handoff stays next to the conversation, so the new owner does not hunt for links in old threads.

Write the canvas as if the new owner has never seen the account. Then post the link in the account channel with one line that says who owns it now. Pin the link so it stays at the top.

  • Owner and backup, with the date ownership changed.
  • Open risks, sorted by how soon they could hit the renewal.
  • Promises made to the customer, with dates. Check these first.
  • Next meeting, and who from your team must attend.
  • Key contacts, with their role and what they care about.

Automate intake and welcome messages with Workflow Builder

Workflow Builder runs repeatable steps in Slack. For a CSM, the useful jobs are intake forms, welcome messages for new channel members and scheduled reminders. Slack's guide lists request intake forms for executive business reviews, renewals and staffing. Forms stop requests from arriving in random formats.

To start, go to Agents & tools > Workflows > New > Build Workflow. Slack's help article says to click Agents & tools in the sidebar, or use the Tools tab, then More. The start events include From a link, From a webhook, On a schedule, When a message is posted, When a person joins a channel and When an emoji reaction is used.

Workflow Builder needs a paid plan. By default, anyone on a paid plan can create workflows, except Frontline Members. Menu names change between versions. Older guides use workspace name > Tools > Workflow Builder. If your screen does not match, look for the Workflows area first, then check the help center.

  • Welcome message: when a person joins the channel, post the onboarding guide and your contact line.
  • Renewal intake: a form that asks for the renewal date, the decision maker and the blockers.
  • Scheduled check-in: on a set day, post a reminder to refresh the account summary.

Use huddles for coaching instead of scheduling meetings

Slack's guide recommends huddles for real-time coaching, in place of scheduled meetings. A huddle starts in seconds. You can coach a teammate on a hard call while the details are fresh. Use it for a walk through a deck, a second opinion on an email or a quick check on a risk.

The limits matter. Free-plan huddles can have two participants at most, and they run one-on-one in DMs only. Paid plans allow up to 50 participants. Only 25 can turn on video at once. Up to two people can share their screen at the same time.

Fix Slack huddle screen sharing on a Mac

Slack's help article describes a bug in the Mac desktop app. It hits people who moved from the direct-download Slack app to the Mac App Store version. If screen sharing fails, the article gives three fixes. Try the first one. Move to the next only if it fails.

  1. Remove Slack under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording, then open Slack and approve it again.
  2. Run tccutil reset ScreenCapture in Terminal, then approve Slack again. This resets screen recording permission for apps in general, so expect to approve other apps again.
  3. Reinstall the direct download from slack.com/downloads/mac, then approve screen recording for it.

Keyboard shortcuts for Slack on a Mac

Slack's keyboard help confirms two shortcuts to learn first. ⌘K opens a conversation. ⌘/ displays all available shortcuts. The help page does not list a shortcut for starting a huddle, creating a canvas or list, or sending a message. Do not assume one exists. Press ⌘/ on your own Mac to see what your version offers.

A CSM's routine suits ⌘K well. Press ⌘K, type the customer's short name, then press Return. Repeat for the next account. Keep your busiest accounts in the sidebar, so you can reach them without searching.

Keep notifications from burying account work

Channel sprawl is a common complaint. A CSM with many account channels can get buried by alerts from channels that matter less. Most advice on this comes from third-party sites, not Slack. Treat the rules below as a starting point, then adjust them for your team.

  • Keep account channels with an open risk unmuted.
  • Mute healthy accounts, and check them once a day.
  • Mute internal social channels during customer hours.
  • Review the list each month, and archive channels with no activity.

Use Lazur for the moments when a step slips your mind. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask where the setting is. Lazur answers out loud and draws a circle around it. That is faster than digging through old help pages in the middle of a call.

Free plan limits that break a CSM setup

Some CSM setups need a paid plan. The table below lists the free plan limits that matter most for account work. Check each row against the way you run your accounts.

Free plan limits from Slack's help center, checked November 2026.
FeatureFree plan limitWhat to do
Message and file historyMost recent 90 days onlyCopy decisions into a note you own before they age out.
Third-party apps and custom integrations10 installsPick the integrations your accounts need most.
HuddlesOne-on-one in DMs onlyMove group coaching to a paid plan.
WorkflowsExisting ones stop, new ones cannot be madePlan welcome and intake steps around a paid plan.
Canvases and ListsRead-onlyKeep handoff notes in a file you can edit.

A short history window hurts most at renewal time. You need the full story of an account then, and the free plan may not keep it. Copy the decisions that matter into a note you control.

Start from Slack's customer onboarding template

Slack's Customer Onboarding template is a shared workspace. It packages an onboarding and support guide, a shared task tracker, a product feedback tracker and form, and status notifications for items. The template page does not state a plan requirement, so check your workspace before you install it.

Use the template for the onboarding phase, and keep the account channel for daily work. The task tracker is shared, so decide who can edit it before the customer joins. Otherwise the tracker fills with edits nobody owns.

Where the time goes, and what the numbers do not say

Slack's Workforce Lab survey asked 10,281 respondents in six countries about their work. Desk workers estimated that 41% of their time goes to tasks that are low value, repetitive or lack meaningful contribution. The survey ran from January 10 to 29, 2024. These are self-estimates. They are not a time log.

Use huddles in Slack

A survey of CSMs points the same way. Vitally quotes a survey in which 66% of CSMs say they spend a significant portion of the working day on repetitive administrative processes. That figure comes from a fall 2023 report with no stated sample size. Use it as a signal, not a benchmark.

Slack's Hidden Knowledge Crisis post says desk workers spend a third of their time on low-value tasks, such as searching for information. It links to a different survey from the 41% figure. Keep the two apart. Use them to decide where to look first, not as targets.

Mistakes CSMs make in Slack

  • Starting a huddle on a topic that needs a written record. Post the decision in the account channel after the call.
  • Putting internal pricing talk in a Slack Connect channel. Keep it in your own account channel.
  • Building a workflow on a free plan, then wondering why it stopped. Check the plan first.
  • Trusting a menu path from an old guide. Match what you see on screen, then check the help center.
  • Muting every channel. Mute the healthy accounts, and keep the risky ones loud.
  • Leaving handoffs in direct messages. The next owner cannot find them there.

A renewal week in Slack, step by step

Here is a worked example for the week before a renewal. On Monday, press ⌘K, open the account channel and read the pinned summary. Check the open risks. Update the renewal date if it changed. Ask the customer one question in a thread, so the answer stays with the account.

On Tuesday, submit the renewal intake workflow, so your internal team gets the blockers in one format. Start a short huddle with your manager if a risk needs a decision. Write the outcome in the channel before you end the call.

On Thursday, send the renewal note. Draft it in your own channel first, check it, then post the final text to the customer channel. Put the next date in the pinned summary. A clean setup means the week goes to the customer, not to searching.

Where Lazur fits in your Slack day

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘, which is Option and Command together, to ask about anything on screen. Lazur answers out loud. Ask where something is, and it draws a circle and a label around it on your screen.

For Slack, that means you can ask where the Workflows area is, ask how to build a welcome message, or ask what a shortcut does. Lazur guides you one click at a time, and it waits for each click. It does not click for you, and it does not operate Slack.

Hold fn to dictate. Lazur writes clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app, so account updates can start as speech. Dictation is unlimited on Pro and Power. Snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots help with the messages you repeat each week.

Lazur also handles everyday tasks by voice. Set a timer, add an Apple Reminders item for a follow-up, or open a link. It keeps a memory of what you asked and did, on the Mac. Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut.

Lazur has a free trial with no credit card needed, so you can test it on your own account first. Compare plans on the pricing page. For the Slack side of the product, see Slack for Mac. If your accounts run through email too, read Gmail for customer success managers.

Setup checklist for this week

  1. Write your channel naming rule and apply it to your open accounts.
  2. Ask your Slack admin about plan needs for Slack Connect and workflows.
  3. Press ⌘/ and note the shortcuts your Mac version shows.
  4. Build one welcome workflow in a test channel, then move it live.
  5. Create a handoff canvas template and keep a copy outside Slack.
  6. Set notification rules for account channels with open risks.
  7. Ask Lazur to walk you through one new Slack step each day.

What to check before you trust this page

Slack's Mac release notes list version 4.53.283, but the entry carries a November 9, 2026 date, which is later than today. Treat that version as unconfirmed. Check your own version before you rely on any menu path here.

Plan requirements are the second gap. Slack Connect, the onboarding template and some workflow behavior do not say clearly who needs a paid plan. Ask your admin. Menu names also change by version, so match your screen first.

Questions people ask

Does Lazur work inside Slack on a Mac?

Lazur works across apps on your Mac. It is not a plugin or add-in for Slack, and it does not operate Slack for you. It can guide you through a step, point at a control, explain what you see, or type a draft at your cursor.

Can I run customer success work in Slack on the free plan?

You can, but expect limits. Message and file history covers the most recent 90 days. Existing workflows stop and new ones cannot be made. Canvases and Lists become read-only. Free huddles stay one-on-one in DMs.

How many organizations can join one Slack Connect channel?

Slack's help page says a Slack Connect channel can host up to 250 organizations, including your own. The page does not state a member limit or which plan is required, so ask your Slack admin for your setup.

What is the fastest way to open an account channel on a Mac?

Press ⌘K, type the channel name or the customer's short name, then press Return. Slack's keyboard help describes this flow. A consistent naming rule makes the search faster every time.

Why does screen sharing fail in Slack huddles on my Mac?

Slack's help article says the bug affects people who moved from the direct-download app to the Mac App Store version. Remove Slack under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording, or reinstall the direct download from slack.com/downloads/mac.

Do I need Lazur to use Slack well as a CSM?

No. Channel rules, shortcuts and handoff canvases work without any assistant. Lazur helps when you forget a step, need a draft, or want a quick answer out loud. Compare plans on the pricing page.

Does Lazur watch my screen all the time?

No. Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer and are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models.
