Figma for UX researchers on Mac: FigJam templates, voting sessions and memory fixes
Figma for UX researchers on Mac means the Figma desktop app, which has the same features as the browser version. Most research work happens in FigJam, the whiteboard inside Figma, for plans, notes, affinity maps and live voting. This guide covers setup, FigJam workflows, voting, memory fixes and where Lazur fits.

Lazur · points at itLazur circles End for everyone and says the timer will not close the vote.
Quick answer
- Install the Figma desktop app on macOS 12 or later. It has the same features as the browser version, plus a few Mac extras.
- Run research workshops in FigJam. Voting needs a paid team file, and a timer does not end the vote.
- Memory trouble starts at 90%. Split big files and swap hidden layers for component properties.
- Lazur points at buttons, explains alerts and dictates notes at your cursor. It does not click for you.

If you run interviews on a Mac, your Figma time splits in two. Product designers usually live in the design files. Researchers usually live in FigJam, the whiteboard side of Figma. Most of your work falls into four jobs: planning a study, pinning interview notes, grouping them into themes and running group votes. Each job touches a different Mac setting, memory limit or shortcut.
Set up the Figma desktop app on your Mac
The Figma desktop app for macOS needs macOS 12 Monterey or later. Apple released Monterey in October 2021. Figma says the app is optimized for both Intel and Apple silicon Macs. Check your version with Apple menu > About This Mac. If your version is older, update macOS before you install anything.

Figma supports the previous desktop app version for six months after a release. Keep everyone in your research team on a current build. Figma also offers a separate Figma Beta app. It installs next to the regular app, so you can test new features without touching the app you use for interviews.
- Confirm macOS 12 or later with Apple menu > About This Mac.
- Download the desktop app from Figma's download page and open the installer.
- Sign in with the account that belongs to your research team.
- Open a FigJam file and check that the top toolbar shows the Timer, voting, and music panel.
- Optional: turn on Force Click and haptic feedback in System Settings > Trackpad to feel FigJam emotes.
FigJam for user research: templates and notes
Figma's design research resource library points to FigJam templates for concept maps, information architecture, service blueprints and mood boards. The templates are free. Start from one when you need a visual shape for a study, not a blank board. A concept map suits early discovery. A service blueprint suits a study that follows a flow with several actors.
Mood boards suit early visual direction. Information architecture maps suit navigation studies, where you test how people sort and find things. Pick one template, rename it for the study, and delete the parts you do not need. A template full of unused frames confuses the room.
Affinity mapping in FigJam for interview notes
Here is a routine that works. Paste each interview quote into its own sticky note. Tag it with a participant code, not a name. Group stickies that describe the same problem. Then label each group with a finding, such as: People export to a spreadsheet before they trust the dashboard.
Write labels as findings, not topics. The topic 'Onboarding' cannot be wrong. The finding 'New users stop at the invite step' can be checked against the next interview. Keep a count of quotes in each group, so the readout shows how much evidence sits behind each claim. Keep raw notes with personal details in a separate file with restricted access.

Run a FigJam voting session in a paid team file
Start voting from the Timer, voting, and music panel in the top toolbar. Anyone on a Professional, Education, Organization or Enterprise team can start a session. Voting works only in files that belong to a paid team. Starter is free, with limited access, so confirm the file's team before a workshop, not during it.
- Open the Timer, voting, and music panel and start a voting session.
- Set the votes per participant to match how many items you show.
- Ask participants to vote with the Stamp tool on stickies, shapes, text, images, code blocks or components.
- Let votes stay hidden while people vote. Results appear only after the session ends.
- Click End for everyone when the group is done, then open the Results tab in the panel.

The State of User Research 2022 Report, User InterviewsTreat voting results as a signal, not a verdict. Stamp votes show which items a room ranked high. They do not show why people chose them. Pair the top results with the interview quotes behind each sticky before you call a finding strong.
Fix the Figma memory limit on Mac
Figma states an active memory limit of 2 GB per browser tab. Hidden layers add a lot to that number. Memory is tracked only for pages that have loaded, so a big file can look fine until you open the heavy page. At 90% memory, a red alert tile appears in the left sidebar. You cannot dismiss it. At 100%, the file locks.
Recovery mode ends only after memory drops below 90%. Once the file locks, close the pages you do not need, then remove hidden layers before you go back to the board. Do not keep adding stickies to a file that already shows the red tile.
Prepare big research files before a study
- Split large files. Move each page into its own file, so each study loads less.
- Use component properties instead of extra hidden layers and variants.
- Split large libraries into smaller ones.
- Compress images with the Downsize plugin before you paste screenshots into a board.
- Import complex SVGs in smaller parts instead of one large file.
| Symptom | First move |
|---|---|
| Red tile in the left sidebar at 90% | Close pages you do not need, then remove hidden layers |
| File locked at 100% | Free memory by closing pages, then reopen. Recovery mode ends only below 90%. |
| Slow board full of screenshots | Compress images with the Downsize plugin |
| Slow import of a vector file | Import the SVG in smaller parts |
| One huge file holding many studies | Move each study or page into its own file |
Mac extras and shortcuts worth knowing
The desktop app adds a few Mac-only pieces on top of the browser features. Notifications appear in the Mac menu bar. For prototypes, View > Always Show Tabs When Presenting keeps the tabs visible. Trackpad haptics fire on prototype connections and FigJam emotes, but only when Force Click and haptic feedback are on.
Five shortcuts cover most affinity sessions. Use ⌘C and ⌘V to move quotes between a board and a notes doc. Use ⌘D to duplicate a sticky that needs the same format. Use ⌘G to group a finished cluster. Use ⌘Z to undo a grouping that the room rejects.
Where Lazur fits while you work in Figma
Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘, which is Option and Command together, and ask about anything on screen. Lazur answers out loud. Ask where something is, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to do something, and Lazur guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click.
Lazur does not click buttons or edit files for you. It is not a plugin or add-in for Figma. Use it as a second pair of eyes. Ask Lazur to walk you through it when you forget where a setting lives, or when your hands are busy with a sticky note.
For notes, hold fn to dictate clean text at the cursor in any app. Snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots help with phrases you repeat, like your participant code format or a standard consent line. More on setup is on the Lazur for Figma page.
Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer you, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models. Still, a research board can hold participant details. Check your team's rules before you ask Lazur about a board in a shared room.
If you design as well as research, the Figma for designers on Mac page covers desktop setup and memory fixes in more detail.
What the research surveys say about tools
The 2022 State of User Research survey from User Interviews had 562 respondents. It found that 70% used Figma or FigJam, tied with Zoom. The same report said that not one of the top 10 tools was designed for user research specifically. Generalist tools form the core of most research toolkits.
That survey is four years old, so treat the 70% as a snapshot. The 2025 report from the same publisher surveyed 485 qualified researchers. It found that 54% cited time to recruit as a challenge, down 7 points from 2024. That number covers recruiting in general, not Figma.
On the design side, a 2023 arXiv study of 114 UX practitioners at U.S.-based software organizations reports that design handoff to developers remains a long-standing difficulty. The abstract also names design system management as a new challenge tied to collaborative tools.
Mistakes UX researchers make in Figma on Mac
- Putting every study in one giant file. Memory is tracked per loaded page, so split studies early.
- Trusting the timer to close a vote. Someone in the file must click End for everyone.
- Forgetting the Results tab after a session. Results appear there only after the session ends.
- Starting a vote in a Starter file. Voting needs a paid team file.
- Using hidden layers as storage for states. Component properties do that job with less memory.
- Writing labels as topics instead of findings.
Pricing and seats for research teams
Figma's pricing page lists Professional at $16/month for a full seat and $3/month for a Collab seat. Dev seats are $12/month. Organization full seats are $55/month, and Enterprise full seats are $90/month. Starter is free with limited access. Prices can change, so check Figma's pricing page before you buy seats.
Lazur has its own plans. See Lazur pricing for the current trial and monthly options. Compare the Figma seat you need with the voice assistant you want before you buy either.

The desktop app offers the same features as the browser version. It also lets you develop plugins and widgets. On a Mac it adds notifications in the menu bar, the View > Always Show Tabs When Presenting option and trackpad haptics.
Which macOS version does the Figma desktop app need?
The desktop app for macOS needs macOS 12 Monterey or later. Figma says it is optimized for Intel and Apple silicon Macs. Check your version with Apple menu > About This Mac before you install.
Can I run a FigJam voting session on a free Figma plan?
Not in a free file. Voting works only in files that are part of a paid team, such as Professional, Education, Organization or Enterprise. Starter is free, with limited access.
Why did my voting session stay open after the timer ran out?
A timer does not end a FigJam voting session. Someone in the file must click End for everyone. Results stay hidden until then, and they appear in the Results tab afterward.
What does the 90% memory alert in Figma mean?
At 90% memory, a red alert tile appears in the left sidebar and cannot be dismissed. At 100%, the file locks. Recovery mode ends only after memory drops below 90%. Split the file and remove hidden layers.
Is Lazur a Figma plugin?
No. Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac. It is not a plugin or add-in for Figma. It guides you, points at things and dictates text, but it does not click for you.
Does Lazur send my research to anyone?
Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models.
How do I do affinity mapping in FigJam?
Paste each interview quote into its own sticky note, tag it with a participant code, and group the stickies that describe the same problem. Label each group as a finding, and keep a count of quotes per group.
