Figma for designers on Mac: desktop setup, memory fixes and voice help with Lazur
If you design on a Mac, use the Figma desktop app. It matches the browser version and adds tab groups, split view, fonts already installed on your Mac, and an eyedropper that samples colors outside the canvas. This guide covers setup, the memory limit that locks big files, and where a voice assistant like Lazur helps while you work.
You say“Lazur, where is the eyedropper?”
Lazur · points at itLazur circles the eyedropper on screen and labels it. You press it yourself, then pick a color.
Quick answer
- Use the Figma desktop app on macOS 12 or later. The outside-canvas eyedropper needs macOS 14 and desktop build 126.2.10 or newer.
- Group tabs and use split view to keep a design system open beside your working screen.
- Watch for the red memory tile at 90 percent. Delete hidden layers and split large files before the file locks at 100 percent.
- The desktop app can use fonts already installed on your Mac, with no font installer.
- Lazur points, explains, guides and dictates while you work in Figma. It does not click for you.

Figma's desktop app is the Mac version of Figma, and it is the one to run if you design on a Mac every day. Figma's desktop guide says it offers the same features as the browser version. It also lets you develop plugins and widgets, and use fonts installed on your device without the font installer.
Check your Mac before you install Figma desktop

| Feature | What you need | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Figma desktop app | macOS 12 or later, Intel or Apple silicon | Figma desktop app guide |
| Outside-canvas eyedropper | macOS 14 or later and desktop 126.2.10 or newer | Eyedropper help article |
| Eyedropper in beta | Beta 126.3.6 or newer on macOS 14 or later | Eyedropper help article |
| Trackpad haptic feedback | Force Click and haptic feedback turned on | Figma desktop app guide |
Two numbers matter most here, macOS 12 and macOS 14. The first runs the app. The second turns on the eyedropper that samples colors outside the canvas. If your Mac is older than macOS 12, the app will not run. If it is on macOS 12 or 13, the app works but that one feature stays off.
Check your version from Apple menu > About This Mac. Then compare it with the table. Figma says previous app versions stop being supported six months after a release, so an old build will not stay supported for long. Plan updates the way you plan for any tool you depend on.
Use tab groups and split view for a design system
Figma's desktop guide lists the tab tools you get in the desktop app. You can pin and mute tabs. You can group open files into tab groups. You can view two files, or two instances of one file, side by side in split tab view. You can also drag tabs between windows.
Here is a setup that works well for a checkout redesign. Pin the design system file in the first tab, so it never closes by accident. Open the product file and the prototype file next to it. Group all three under one tab group named for the sprint. Then open split tab view with the design system on one side and your working screen on the other. You can copy components without switching files.
Since May 1, 2026, Figma says that on macOS, links open straight in the desktop app instead of the browser. Files and prototypes also preload in the background. The overflow menu lets you search tabs by name, which helps when many files are open at once.
- Group tabs by project, not by file type, so one sprint sits in one group.
- Open split view only when you compare two states of the same screen.
- Close finished prototype tabs so the file has memory to spare.
- Search tabs by name instead of scrolling through a long row.
Stop memory warnings before a file locks

Reduce memory usage in files92%
fewer memory warnings, according to Figma's April 24, 2026 release notes. This is Figma's own claim
Figma product news and release notes (archive)Figma's memory article gives you three numbers to watch. Each browser has an active memory limit, which Figma states as 2GB per browser tab. The desktop app follows the same browser-based limits. At 90 percent of the limit, a red alert tile appears in the left sidebar. At 100 percent, the file locks and shows a notice that no memory is available.
Here is what 90 percent means in practice. With a 2GB limit, the alert fires with about 200MB still free. That is your window to act. If you wait for the lock, you must bring memory back under 90 percent before the file can leave recovery mode.
Hidden layers cause much of the trouble. Figma's memory article calls them a big contributor, because Figma still stores and renders them even when they are hidden. Large component sets add load too. Many mature design systems have plenty of both.
Fixes in the order most designers should try them
- Delete hidden layers you no longer need. Figma still renders them, so they cost memory.
- Move old explorations to an archive file. Keep only the current screens in the working file.
- Split a large file by product area, so each file holds one flow or one set of pages.
- Use library components for repeated parts, not copies pasted onto every page.
- Close prototype tabs and any tabs you have finished testing.
A common mistake is to treat file memory like the RAM in your Mac. Figma's article ties the limit to the browser, and it says the limit can vary by device. A bigger Mac is not the first fix to try. Clean the file, then check the tile again.
In its April 24, 2026 performance update, Figma said memory warnings fell 92 percent. That is Figma's own claim, not an independent test. Check the tile on your largest file before and after cleanup, and judge the result yourself.
Shortcuts for the moves you make most
Learn a few shortcuts before you learn a long list. ⌘D duplicates the selection. ⌘G groups the selection, and ⇧⌘G ungroups it. ⇧A adds auto layout to the selection. Hold Option while you drag to copy an object as you move it.
Pick three shortcuts each week and use them until they feel automatic. When you forget one, ask Lazur what it does. Lazur answers out loud, so you keep your hands on the file.
Use fonts already installed on your Mac in Figma
The desktop app can use fonts already installed on your device, without the font installer, according to Figma's desktop guide. A background helper called FigmaAgent detects those fonts. It runs with no window, and it only accepts connections from figma.com.
Say a client sends a brand font as a file. Double-click the file to open it in Font Book, then select Install Font. If the font does not show up in Figma, quit the app and open it again. You do not need to upload the font anywhere else.
- Assuming a teammate has the same font. Their Mac needs the file too.
- Installing two versions of one font family, then wondering why spacing shifts.
- Expecting the browser version to read local fonts the same way. That feature belongs to the desktop app.
- Skipping the Font Book check before a review starts.
Figma eyedropper on Mac: sample colors from anywhere on screen
The eyedropper can sample outside the canvas on Figma Desktop 126.2.10 or newer, or on beta 126.3.6 or newer, with macOS 14 or newer. It needs the Screen & System Audio Recording permission in macOS. Figma says the outside-canvas feature is not in the Windows desktop app or in the browser.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording.
- Turn on the switch for Figma.
- If the eyedropper still cannot sample outside the canvas, quit Figma and open it again.
- Open a file, use the eyedropper, and point it at a color in another app.
Here is a common job. A client sends a live site link and wants the exact button blue. Open the site in your browser, switch to Figma, and sample the button. Copy the value into your color style. You skip the guesswork and the screenshot.
Trackpad haptics and presenting prototypes on a Mac
Figma's desktop guide says haptic feedback works with trackpads on macOS devices. You need Force Click and haptic feedback turned on. Check Apple menu > System Settings > Trackpad > Point & Click, then confirm the Force Click and haptic feedback switch is on.
The guide also says that always showing tabs when presenting prototypes is only available on Mac. If you present prototypes in client reviews, set that up before the meeting, not while the client is watching.
Plugins, widgets and community files to check first
Figma's Community guide lists many resource types. They include UI kits, icon collections and wireframes, plus website templates, Figma Make projects, plugins, widgets, apps, slide templates for Figma Slides and whiteboarding templates. Most listings show usage counts.
One number shows likes. The other shows how many people used the plugin or widget, duplicated the file, or authenticated the app. Plugins run only for the person who ran them. Widgets are visible to everyone in the file, so check a widget before you add it to a shared client file.
Before you duplicate a UI kit, read its usage count and open the file. Check the components you need, then duplicate it into your team project. A copy in your personal drafts is harder for teammates to find later.
What designers find slow and confusing, according to survey data
The UX Tools spring 2026 survey ran from March 14 to April 6, 2026. It had 1,478 designers and builders across 18 regions. Figma was used every week by 82.6 percent of respondents, the highest share of any tool in the survey. Figma Make and FigJam trailed well behind.
| Figma | 82.6 % |
|---|---|
| Figma Make | 34.8 % |
| FigJam | 34 % |

The same survey ranked the top workflow blockers. Time to learn tools came first at 55.7 percent. Too many tools to evaluate came next at 53.0 percent, then AI output quality at 52.2 percent. The report concludes: 'The blocker isn't capability. It's bandwidth.' That points to time spent learning, not missing features.
Figma's 2026 AI report draws on three years of data, with 8,403 survey responses and 639 interviews across ten markets. It finds that 76 percent of respondents do at least half their work on the canvas. Six in ten spend most of their time there. The canvas is where the hours go, so that is where small fixes pay off.
The same report says designers taking part in development rose to 41 percent. It also says 41 percent say AI meaningfully changes how teams collaborate, up from 7 percent two years earlier. Figma wrote the report, so read those numbers as Figma's view.
Where voice help fits into a Figma session
Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold Option and Command together, ⌥⌘, to ask about anything on screen. Lazur sees your screen only while you hold the shortcut, and it answers out loud. It is not a plugin or add-in for Figma, and it does not click buttons for you.

Two kinds of request fit Figma well. Ask where something is, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it on your screen. Ask how to do something, and Lazur guides you one click at a time. It waits for each click, so you keep control of the file.
Hold fn to dictate. Clean, formatted text lands at the cursor in any app. That helps with spec notes, component descriptions and handoff messages. Test it in a text layer first, so you see how the text lands before you dictate a long note. Lazur also keeps snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots.
Privacy matters when a client file is confidential. Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models. Check your client contract before you share unreleased work with any tool.
A worked handoff audit on a Mac
Say you hand off a checkout flow on Friday. Start with the memory tile, because a locked file wastes everyone's time. If the tile appears, delete hidden layers and move old options to the archive file. Then group the tabs, so the design system sits beside the screens you are handing off.

- Check the left sidebar for the red memory tile. Clean the file if it appears.
- Group the tabs for the sprint and pin the design system file.
- Hold ⌥⌘ and ask Lazur where the export option is. Follow the circle it draws.
- Hold fn and dictate the handoff notes into a text layer. Then edit the wording by hand.
- Open the font list and confirm each brand font is installed on this Mac.
The first pass takes the longest. After that, the steps become habit. Keep the list in your team's handoff template, so the next person runs the same checks before a developer opens the file.
Mistakes designers make in Figma on Mac
- Running an old build and wondering why the eyedropper or a tab tool is missing.
- Waiting for the file to lock before cleaning up hidden layers.
- Adding a widget to a shared file without checking who will see it.
- Assuming a brand font works on a teammate's Mac when it only lives on yours.
- Expecting an assistant to click for you. Lazur points, explains, guides and drafts, but you do the clicks.
