How to insert an equation in Word on Mac: Microsoft 365 steps and Control+= shortcut
To insert an equation in Word on Mac, click where the math belongs and choose Insert > Equation, or press Control+=. Word opens an equation box and the Equation Tools Design tab, so you can type the formula or build it with structures.
Quick answer
- Click in the body text, then choose Insert > Equation, or press Control+=.
- The Equation Tools Design tab opens, and you type or build the formula there.
- Type codes such as 3^2 or a/b, press a space, then choose Convert > Professional.
- Word for the web uses a side panel, and Microsoft lists no web shortcut.
- If Control+= does nothing, update Word first. A Microsoft Q&A thread reports that fix on version 16.96.
What you need
- Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac, or Word 2024 for Mac
- Word 2021, 2019 or 2016 on Mac, covered by the same Microsoft guide
- A document open with the cursor in the body text
- Word updated to the latest build if Control+= does nothing
How to Insert an equation in Word on Mac in Word on a Mac
Place the cursor
None
Click in the body text where the equation belongs. A blank line keeps the equation easy to find later. Avoid header and footer areas, since those are not body text.
Tip: Click once, then check that the cursor blinks in the right spot.
Open the Insert tab
None
Click Insert at the top of the Word window. The equation tools sit in the Symbols group on this tab.
Tip: The ribbon can shrink. If you do not see the groups, widen the window.
Insert a blank equation
⌃=
Click Equation in the Symbols group. Word inserts an equation box with placeholder text, and the Equation Tools Design tab opens.
Tip: Use the ribbon route the first time, so you know where the button sits.
Type your formula
None
Type letters, numbers and operators straight into the box. Plain characters stay as typed. Use the codes in the next step when you want a fraction, a root or a superscript.
Type linear codes
None
Type 3^2 then a space for a superscript. Type a/b then a space for a fraction. Type \sqrt then a space for a square root. Codes are case-sensitive, so keep them lowercase.
Tip: The space or punctuation mark triggers the conversion, so do not skip it.
Convert to Professional format
⌃=
Select the equation and choose Convert > Professional. Microsoft's guide also lists Ctrl+= for this step. Use the menu if the shortcut does nothing on your copy.
Tip: Control+Shift+= converts Professional back to linear code, so you can edit the text.
Check the result at normal zoom
⌃⇧=
Look at fractions, superscripts and roots. Fractions should stack, and superscripts should sit above the line. If a part looks wrong, convert it back to linear code and fix the code.
Click out to return to text
None
Click outside the equation box to return to the body text. Keep typing where you left off, or add the next equation with the same steps.
This guide covers the desktop app for Mac, the Word you open from the Dock or the Applications folder. I found no Microsoft article written only for equations in Word on Mac. So some steps below come from Microsoft's cross-platform guides and from a third-party walkthrough. Where a detail is not confirmed, the page says so.
Which Word for Mac you have
Equation steps apply across several recent versions. Microsoft's Math AutoCorrect guide covers Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2024 on Mac. It also covers Word 2021, 2019 and 2016 on Mac and Windows, and Word for Mac 2011. The guide tells you to select Insert, then Equation. The latest desktop build in Microsoft's release notes is 16.114.3, build 26102720, released October 27, 2026.
- Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac, the subscription app that most people use today.
- Word 2024 for Mac, which the same Microsoft guide covers.
- Word for the web, which runs in a browser and uses a different equation panel. See the web section below.
- Word for Mac 2011, listed in the guide, though it is the oldest version covered here.
Insert an equation from the Insert tab
The most visible route runs through the ribbon. Click Insert at the top of the Word window. Find the Symbols group. The Equation button sits there. Microsoft describes it as a split button, so the arrow beside it opens a drop-down menu. Click the main part when you want a blank equation right away.
Use the ribbon route the first time you insert an equation. It shows you where the button lives on your copy of Word. Once you know the spot, the shortcut saves a trip to the ribbon. Both routes end in the same equation box.

Use Control+= to skip the ribbon
Control+= is the Mac shortcut that opens the equation tool. Microsoft's Math AutoCorrect guide lists it, and Editorworld confirms it. Press it with the cursor in the body text. An equation box appears with placeholder text, and the Equation Tools Design tab opens by itself. The same Microsoft guide lists Alt+= for Windows.
Type linear codes and convert them to Professional format
Linear input is plain typed code that Word turns into math. You type a code, then press a space or a punctuation mark. Word converts the code into a structure. Microsoft's linear format guide describes UnicodeMath codes such as \frac and \sqrt. Codes are case-sensitive, so a capital letter can stop the conversion.
| You type | What Word shows | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 3^2 then a space | A superscript 2 | Press the space after the 2 |
| a/b then a space | A stacked fraction | Press the space after the b |
| \sqrt then a space | A square root sign | Type the code in lowercase |
Professional format is the finished layout. To switch, select the equation and choose Convert > Professional. Microsoft also lists Ctrl+= for this step. Its guide does not list a separate Mac shortcut, so test the key on your copy. To return to editable code, press Ctrl+Shift+=.
Use LaTeX input if you have Microsoft 365
Word for Microsoft 365 subscribers can also type LaTeX. Microsoft calls LaTeX input new. The choice sits on the Equations tab next to UnicodeMath. Other Office apps support only UnicodeMath. If a colleague opens your file in an older Office app, convert the equation to Professional format before you share it.
Number equations and update the numbers
Numbered equations show up in papers, reports and lab notes. Editorworld says Fn+F9 updates equation numbers on a Mac. The article does not walk through the full numbering setup. Test your numbering in a short sample document before you rely on it in a long report.
Word for the web: a different equation panel
In Word for the web, Insert > Equation opens the Equation Tools panel. Pick a symbol or structure from the Symbols and Structures tabs. Structures > Fractions adds a fraction. Edit the formula in the box at the top of the panel. Then select Insert on page. Microsoft says the steps differ slightly from the desktop app, and it lists no web shortcuts.
Two limits apply on the web. Editorworld says Ink to Math is not available in Word for the web. It also says Alt+= works only in some browsers and not others. If you need full desktop features, open the file in the Mac app.

Subscript and superscript for simple math
Some formulas need only light formatting. H2O or x squared inside a sentence is one example. You do not need an equation for those. A Microsoft Q&A answer gives Shift+Command+minus for subscript and Shift+Command+= for superscript in Word for Mac. Select the character, then press the shortcut.
Shortcuts can shift between Word releases. In one Microsoft Q&A thread, the original poster said Command+minus now zooms the view. Microsoft did not confirm that in the thread. If a shortcut behaves oddly, open Tools > Customize Keyboard. It sits at the bottom of the Tools menu, and you can assign a different key there.
When Control+= does nothing
The most common cause is an older build. A Microsoft Q&A thread from May 2, 2025 reports that Control+= stopped opening the Equation tab on version 16.96. The same thread says typed codes such as 3^2 stopped converting. The poster said that updating to the latest version fixed it.
Update Word, restart it, and test the shortcut again. Microsoft's release notes list 16.114.3, build 26102720, released October 27, 2026, as the most recent Word for Mac release. If your build is older than that, update before you go further.
- Confirm the cursor is in body text, not in a header or footer.
- Press a space or a punctuation mark after each typed code.
- Check the case of each code, since codes are case-sensitive.
- A non-accepted answer in a Microsoft Q&A thread suggests Convert > All-Professional for a stuck equation.
- If the shortcut stays silent, use Insert > Equation from the ribbon.
Mistakes people make with equations in Word
- Pressing Command where Control is needed. The equation shortcut is Control+=.
- Typing a code and moving on without a space. Word waits for the space or punctuation mark.
- Using the wrong case, such as \Frac instead of \frac. Codes are case-sensitive.
- Formatting plain text to look like math when a real equation would be clearer.
- Assuming the web panel works like the desktop app. Microsoft says it works slightly differently.
- Trusting a shortcut after an update without testing it first.
Most equation problems come down to the same few causes. Check the key, the space after the code, the case of the code, and the version. If none of those help, use the ribbon route. It is slower, but it shows you exactly where the Equation button sits.
A worked example: fraction and exponent
Say you want the expression a over b, plus c squared. Click in the body text and press Control+=. Type a/b, then a space. Type +c^2, then a space. Word converts the fraction and the exponent after each space. Select the whole equation and choose Convert > Professional to finish it.
Check the result at normal zoom. The fraction should stack, and the exponent should sit above the line. If something looks wrong, press Control+Shift+= to return to linear code. Then fix the code and convert it again.

Next steps after the equation looks right
Save the file in the format your readers need. If a colleague on Windows will open it, test the equation on that machine too. Microsoft's Math AutoCorrect guide lists symbol commands you can type. Those help when you use the same symbols often.
If you are writing a paper, the next step is often a source list. The citation guide covers that step. For a longer report, the table of contents guide shows how to add navigation.

If it does not work
- Control+= does nothing
- Update Word. A Microsoft Q&A thread from May 2025 reports that Control+= stopped opening the Equation tab on version 16.96. The poster said updating fixed it. The latest release listed is 16.114.3, from October 27, 2026.
- Typed codes like 3^2 stay as plain text
- Press a space or a punctuation mark after the code. Conversion happens after a space or punctuation. Codes are case-sensitive, so check the letters too.
- A shortcut does something else on Mac
- Some Word for Mac shortcuts conflict with macOS defaults. Open Tools > Customize Keyboard, which sits at the bottom of the Tools menu, and assign a different key.
- Word for the web looks different
- The equation panel is not the desktop box. Use Insert > Equation, build the formula, then select Insert on page. Ink to Math is not available in Word for the web.
- Equation numbers do not update
- Press fn+F9 on your Mac keyboard, as Editorworld describes. Then check the numbers in the document before you share it.
- Subscript or superscript shortcut does not work
- A Microsoft Q&A answer gives Shift+Command+minus for subscript and Shift+Command+= for superscript. If Command+minus zooms the view instead, reassign the command under Tools > Customize Keyboard.
