How to unsubscribe from emails in Apple Mail on Mac: mailing lists, step by step
To unsubscribe from emails in Apple Mail on Mac, open a message from the list and click Unsubscribe in the banner at the top, then click OK in the alert. If there is no banner, use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the message, or block the sender.
Quick answer
- Open a message from the list and click Unsubscribe in the banner that reads 'This message is from a mailing list.'
- Click OK in the Unsubscribe from Mailing List? alert. Mail cannot undo the request after that.
- No banner? Use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email, after checking the web address belongs to the sender.
- For spam, click the Junk button instead of unsubscribing. To stop one sender entirely, block them.
What you need
- A Mac with Apple Mail set up for the email account that received the message
- The message from the sender open in the reading pane or its own window
- A banner only shows when the sender included the unsubscribe header
How to Unsubscribe from a mailing list in Apple Mail on Mac in Apple Mail on a Mac
Open the message from the list
Click the email from the mailing list in Apple Mail. Open it so it fills the reading pane or its own window. The banner only shows inside an open message, not in the message list.
Tip: If you only see the sender's name in the list, the banner is not visible yet. Open the message.
Click Unsubscribe in the banner
Look at the top of the message. The banner reads that the message is from a mailing list. Click Unsubscribe inside that banner.
Tip: If the banner has no Unsubscribe option, go to the no-banner steps below.
Click OK in the alert
Mail shows an alert titled Unsubscribe from Mailing List? Click OK. Mail then sends an unsubscribe email from your account to the address the sender listed.
Tip: The email Mail sends is expected. It is the unsubscribe request itself, so you do not need to reply.
Confirm the banner disappears
Once Mail sends the request, the banner goes away. Mail cannot undo the unsubscribe from this screen. To rejoin, sign up again on the sender's website.
Tip: If mail keeps arriving later, use Junk or Block Sender.
Use the footer link when there is no banner
If no banner appears, scroll to the bottom of the email. Find the Unsubscribe link in the footer. Check that the web address belongs to the company that sent the email before you click.
Tip: Scam emails copy footer links. A wrong domain is the signal to stop.
Check the headers if you want proof
With the message open, choose View > Message > All Headers. Look for a line named List-Unsubscribe. If it is missing, the sender likely left out the header, so Mail shows no banner.
Tip: Canary Mail gives this path. Apple's pages checked for this page do not list it, so confirm it on your Mac.
Block the sender
Open a message from the sender. Hover near their name in the header, click the arrow, and select Block Sender. Apple says the limit is 3,000 blocked senders.
Tip: Blocked senders get a blocked icon in the message list, and their messages get a banner.
Mark spam as junk
⇧⌘J
Select the message in the list, then click the Junk button in the toolbar. Do not unsubscribe from spam, because the reply can confirm your address is active.
Tip: Canary Mail names the shortcut ⇧⌘J. Apple's pages checked for this page do not list it, so use the toolbar button if the shortcut does nothing.
Undo a wrong junk flag
If Mail flags a real message as junk, click Move to Inbox in the banner. You can also select the message and click the Not Junk button in the toolbar.
Tip: Check the Junk folder after you move a message, so a real email does not stay hidden.
Unblock a sender
To reverse a block, open a message from the sender. Use the same arrow menu by their name, then choose Unblock Sender.
Tip: Sources disagree on where the blocked list lives. See the troubleshooting section if you cannot find it.
The unsubscribe banner is the fastest way out of a mailing list in Apple Mail. Mail shows it when the sender includes a List-Unsubscribe header in the email. That header is a hidden instruction. It tells your mail app where to send the request. You do not have to hunt for a link in the message body.
What the mailing list banner means
When the banner appears, it says this message is from a mailing list. The Unsubscribe option sits inside that banner, at the top of the message. Use it when you can. It is the cleanest exit, because Mail handles the request for you. An older iDownloadBlog guide describes the banner the same way.
A banner does not prove the sender is trustworthy. It only shows that the sender set up the header. Read the sender's name before you click. If you never signed up for the list, skip the banner and read the Junk section below.

Open the message itself, not just the sender's name in the list. The banner appears inside the open message. Once it shows, the rest is two clicks. Click Unsubscribe, then click OK in the alert. The steps below match each part of the screen.
If your banner says something different, or the button is gone, stop there. Read the section on missing banners before you click anything else. Do not guess at buttons in other menus. The wording can change between macOS releases.
What the unsubscribe alert really does
After you click Unsubscribe, Mail shows an alert titled Unsubscribe from Mailing List? Click OK to confirm. The alert also says Mail will send an email from your address. Canary Mail says this is expected.
That email is the unsubscribe request. Mail sends it to the address the sender listed in the header. You do not need to write anything. You also do not need to reply to the sender. Once Mail sends the request, the banner goes away.
Be clear about one limit. Mail cannot undo the unsubscribe. If you change your mind, you must sign up again on the sender's website. Mail cannot do that for you. Decide before you click OK.
What to do when there is no banner
No banner usually means the sender did not include the unsubscribe header. Canary Mail says the sender likely left it out. Do not panic. You still have options. The email body is the next place to look.
Scroll to the bottom of the email. Look for an Unsubscribe link in the footer. Click it only after you check the web address. The domain should match the company that sent the email. If it points somewhere odd, stop.
If you want to see the header yourself, open the message and choose View > Message > All Headers. Look for a line named List-Unsubscribe. Canary Mail gives this path. Apple's pages checked for this page do not list it, so confirm it on your Mac before you rely on it.
Block a sender instead of unsubscribing
Blocking is the better choice when unsubscribing is not an option. It also fits senders who keep writing after you asked them to stop. Apple says a blocked sender shows a blocked icon by their name in the message list. Their messages also get a banner.

Apple sets the limit at 3,000 blocked senders. Unblocking uses the same arrow menu, so a block is easy to reverse. Use blocking for senders you never want to hear from again, not for one list you have simply grown tired of.
Use Junk for spam, not Unsubscribe
Spam is a different problem. Canary Mail advises against unsubscribing from spam. The reply can tell the sender that your address is active. Use the Junk button instead.
Try a simple test. If you never asked for the email, treat it as spam. If you signed up once and forgot, the banner is the better route. The table below compares the four options.
| Option | Use it when | What Mail does |
|---|---|---|
| Unsubscribe banner | The banner shows for a list you joined | Sends an unsubscribe request to the address the sender listed, after you click OK |
| Footer link | No banner, but the email has an Unsubscribe link | Opens the sender's link, after you check the web address |
| Block Sender | You want all mail from one sender gone | Marks the sender as blocked, up to 3,000 senders |
| Junk button | The email is spam, or you never signed up | Moves the message to Junk, with Not Junk to undo |
Which macOS versions these steps cover
Apple's Mail guide for Mac is labeled macOS 27 Golden Gate. It lists macOS 27 as the selected version, with Tahoe 26 and earlier below it. It does not give a Mail app version number. So the guide tells you which operating system it covers, not which build of Mail you run.
A third-party guide says the unsubscribe steps match macOS 27, Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15 and Sonoma 14. That claim is not confirmed on each version. If your banner or button labels differ, trust your screen and read the troubleshooting section.
How long unsubscribes take to work
Senders should stop mail after a request. Yahoo's sender rules require bulk senders to honor unsubscribes within 2 days. Yahoo also asks bulk senders to keep spam rates below 0.3%. Those rules bind senders, not your mail app.
Google's bulk sender guidelines cover senders who send more than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail accounts. For those senders, marketing and subscribed mail must support one-click unsubscribe. This page does not give Google's exact processing deadline, because the sources conflict.
Mistakes people make when they unsubscribe
- Clicking Unsubscribe on spam, which can confirm that your address is active.
- Clicking an unsubscribe link without checking the web address first.
- Expecting the mail to stop the same minute.
- Forgetting that Mail cannot undo the request.
- Blocking a sender when only one list was the problem.
- Marking a real message as junk and never checking the Junk folder.
Pause before each click. Read the banner and the sender's domain. A few seconds of checking beats cleaning up a wrong click later.

Where the blocked senders list lives
Apple's Reduce junk mail page says to manage blocked senders in System Settings under Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts. A search result from an Apple page describes Mail > Settings > Junk Mail > Blocked instead. Apple's block or unblock page shows a Blocked pane in Mail settings but no full path. Check both locations on your Mac and use the one that matches your screen.

Next steps after you unsubscribe
Once the noise stops, tidy the rest of your inbox. Apple Mail can sort new mail with rules. The rule guide walks through the setup. Start with one rule for a sender you want to keep but not see first.
If a few senders stay useful, group them instead. A smart mailbox collects matching messages in one list. See the smart mailbox steps for the setup. For blocking, the block a sender guide covers the rest.
Keep the banner route as your first choice. Use Junk and blocking for everything else. That order keeps real lists easy to leave and spam easy to stop.

If it does not work
- The unsubscribe banner does not appear
- The sender likely did not include the List-Unsubscribe header. Check the footer link and confirm its web address first. If there is no link, block the sender or mark the message as junk.
- Mail sent an email from my account
- This is expected. Mail sends the unsubscribe request from the account that received the email, to the address the sender listed. The alert warns you before it does this.
- I still get emails after I unsubscribed
- Give it time. Yahoo requires bulk senders to honor unsubscribes within 2 days. If mail keeps arriving after that, mark it as junk or block the sender.
- I unsubscribed by mistake
- Mail cannot undo the request. Sign up again on the sender's website. The list should send mail again once you rejoin.
- I cannot find the blocked senders list
- Apple's junk mail page says System Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts. A search result from an Apple page describes Mail > Settings > Junk Mail > Blocked. Check both on your Mac.
- A real email went to Junk
- Click Move to Inbox in the banner, or select the message and click the Not Junk button in the toolbar. Then check that the sender is not on your blocked list.

Questions people ask
Is there a keyboard shortcut to unsubscribe in Apple Mail?
This page could not confirm one. The unsubscribe steps use the banner and an alert, and the sources do not name a shortcut for them. The only shortcut listed here is Shift-Command-J for Junk, and only Canary Mail gives it.
Does unsubscribing stop every email from a sender?
It stops the mailing list you unsubscribed from. A sender can run more than one list. If you want all of their mail gone, use Block Sender instead.
Can I unsubscribe in iCloud Mail on the web?
This page could not confirm how the web app handles the banner. Use the footer link or block the sender, then check the result in the web app.
Will Mail send a reply to the sender automatically?
Mail sends the unsubscribe request from your account to the address the sender listed. You do not write or send a message yourself. The alert warns you about this before you click OK.
How many senders can I block in Apple Mail?
Apple says you can block up to 3,000 senders. Blocked senders show a blocked icon in the message list. Unblock them from the same arrow menu in the message header.
Which macOS versions do these steps cover?
Apple's Mail guide for Mac is labeled macOS 27. A third-party guide says the steps also match Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15 and Sonoma 14. That was not confirmed on each version, so trust the banner on your own screen.
Is unsubscribing safe?
For real mailing lists, yes. The banner route is the normal route. For senders you do not recognize, check the domain first or use Junk. Unsubscribing from spam can confirm that your address is active.
