Why people look for a Willow Voice alternative on Mac
Most people look for a new app for one of three reasons. They want a lower price, a different privacy setup, or a feature Willow does not focus on. Some also want one account that works on the Mac, the iPhone and a Windows PC. This page compares five apps: Lazur, Willow Voice, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and Aqua Voice. Willow stays in the table so you can see where it fits.
Most dictation happens at a desk like this. · Image by DesiFreeMusic from Pixabay
Your reason decides the shortlist. If cost is the problem, start with the price table below. If privacy is the problem, read the privacy section before you install anything. If you need help with your screen rather than typed text, Lazur is a different kind of app. It is worth a look for that reason alone.
Willow Voice in fair terms: what it does well
Willow Voice is a dictation app. Its homepage says it runs on Mac, Windows and iPhone. It also says offline mode runs dictation on the device. Willow claims it is 3x more accurate than built-in dictation, with text appearing in as little as 200ms. Those are vendor claims. Test them with your own voice before you count on them.
The privacy setup looks strong on paper. Private Mode is the default. The privacy policy says Willow does not keep audio or use it for model training. The pricing page ties enforced zero data retention, SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance to Business and Enterprise. The homepage makes broader claims, so ask which ones cover your plan.
Two limits matter here. Willow's own pricing page marks Android as coming soon. Voibe, a competing vendor, says Android is available and that Willow has no lifetime option. Check both points on the day you buy.
How to choose a Willow Voice alternative for Mac
Start with the job, not the brand. Dictation apps type what you say into the field you are using. Voice assistants answer questions and handle small tasks. Some apps do both. Decide which job matters most, then compare prices.
Run five checks before you pay. Each one takes a few minutes. Write your answers down, then score each app against them.
Count your words. Note how many words you dictate on a normal day and on a heavy day.
Decide on offline use. Say yes only if you work where the internet drops out.
Read the privacy rules. Find out whether audio is stored and whether it trains models.
List your devices. Mac only, or Mac plus iPhone and Windows?
Check the price for the billing period you will use. Monthly and annual prices differ.
Lazur: a voice assistant that sees your screen
Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold ⌥⌘ (Option + Command) to ask about anything on screen. Lazur answers out loud. Ask where something is, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to do something, and Lazur guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click.
Lazur does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. It points and guides. You still do the clicking. If you expected an agent that does the work for you, Lazur is not that. It is not a plugin or add-in for any app, and it has no partnerships with any app maker.
Dictation comes with it. Hold fn to dictate clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app. You also get snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots. Dictation is included, not the headline.
Everyday tasks work by voice too. Lazur handles timers, Apple Reminders, Calendar events, notes, music and volume, opening apps and links, web search and Shortcuts. Research runs in Lazur's own Chrome tabs through the Lazur for Chrome extension. It returns a summary and a report when it finishes.
Pricing is Pro at $18/month ($15/month billed annually, 150 AI actions) and Power at $120/month ($96/month annually, 1,000 AI actions). Dictation is unlimited on both. The 3-day Pro trial needs no credit card. Lazur runs on macOS, on Apple silicon and Intel. Windows is planned, not available.
Wispr Flow: cross-platform dictation with AI cleanup
Wispr Flow is the closest like-for-like swap if you work across devices. Its homepage lists dictation on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Notetaker runs on Windows and Mac. The homepage also says Flow lets you write 4x faster than your keyboard. That is Wispr's own claim, not an independent test.
The pricing page is where to slow down. It lists Free at $0/mo, Pro at $15/user/mo monthly or $12/user/mo annual, and Growth at two prices per period. It does not say which Growth price is monthly. The Free plan says 'Limited words per week' with no number, while the homepage says 2,000 words per week. Check the limit in your own account.
Wispr fits someone who dictates on a Mac at a desk, then sends a message from an iPhone at lunch. One account covers both. On iPhone, the homepage lists dictation, not Notetaker, so set your expectations for each device.
Superwhisper: local models and offline dictation
Superwhisper is the one to test if offline work matters most. Its homepage lists Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and Linux. It also says Intel Macs work best with cloud models, and offline models run well only on Apple Silicon. If you have an Intel Mac, plan on the cloud models.
The free plan includes Meetings on Mac only, with 100+ languages. Pro features are free for up to 3,000 words, after which the free-tier features remain. The homepage also offers a 30-day refund on all plans. That refund is the cheapest way to test it on your own work.
Meetings are a strength and a limit. A tl;dv reviewer, from a company that sells a competing meeting tool, calls Superwhisper 'a strong dictation tool that can also record meetings'. The same review praises the local Parakeet mode and a custom vocabulary panel. It also criticizes proper-noun errors, numbers that change in transcripts, no speaker labels and no consent prompt.
Check the price before you trust any number. The homepage shows Pro as '$849' with no decimal point, so it could be $8.49. The /pricing page returned 404 when checked. A tl;dv reviewer lists $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year and $249.99 for lifetime. I could not confirm those figures on the official site, so check the checkout page before you buy.
Aqua Voice: accuracy and a free tier to test
Aqua Voice works on macOS, Windows, iPhone and Android. Its homepage claims 49 languages for speech recognition. The free plan is $0 with 1,000 words, which is enough to test speed and output before you pay. The pricing page FAQ lists Pro at $10 / month billed annually, or $12 / month month-to-month.
Reviewers praise its accuracy and speed, according to a SayonaraType review. They criticize its cloud-only processing and the 1,000-word free tier. The same review says Aqua's monthly prices changed in late October 2026, with no official announcement it could find. The plan cards on the pricing page showed no prices when checked, so the prices above come from the FAQ text.
Aqua fits someone who wants a plain dictation app and a clear annual price. Test it on the free plan with a real email and a real document. Count the words you use, then decide whether the 1,000-word cap is a problem for your week.

Read the table as a starting point. Wispr's Growth prices are unlabeled, and Superwhisper's Pro price is not confirmed. Willow's page shows two prices without a clear billing period for the second one. Aqua's plan cards were blank when checked, so its prices come from the FAQ.
Add up the billing period you will really use. Business and team plans price per seat. Aqua's Business plan has a two-seat minimum, and Wispr's plans are per user. A solo Mac user should not compare those numbers as if they were the same.
Speed claims: what the research says about dictation
The only study-based number here comes from a 2016 arXiv preprint. Ruan and colleagues compared speech and keyboard entry for short messages on touchscreen phones. They report English speech input was 2.93 times faster, at 153 words per minute against 52 on the keyboard. That study covers phones, not desktop typing. The abstract does not state the participant count.
Here is what those rates mean for one draft. A 500-word draft takes about 3.3 minutes at 153 words per minute. At 52 words per minute, it takes about 9.6 minutes. Your numbers will differ. Time one real session with the typing speed test, then compare.
2.93x
English speech input versus keyboard on phones (153 vs 52 WPM), 2016 preprint
Vendor claims are bigger. Wispr says 4x faster than your keyboard. Willow says text appears in as little as 200ms. I found no independent test that backs either one. Treat both as marketing, and measure your own dictation before you buy.
Privacy: what each company says in its own policy
Privacy claims differ more than prices do. Read the privacy policy, not only the homepage. Each company describes its own default, and the default is the setting most people keep.
Lazur: it listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and screenshots go to AI providers to answer and are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models.
Willow Voice: Private Mode is the default. The policy says it does not retain audio or use it for training. The opt-in Help Improve program may keep anonymized text, not audio. Transcripts stay on your device, with no fixed retention period given.
Wispr Flow: audio is deleted once transcribed, unless you turn on Dictation cloud storage. Requests use TLS 1.2 or higher, and stored data is AES-256 encrypted. If 'Improve the model for everyone' is on, audio and transcripts can train its models.
Superwhisper: its policy says your data is not used for training. Local models keep audio on the device. Cloud models process audio in memory and do not store it after the request. Server logs are kept for 30 days.
Aqua Voice: with Privacy Mode on, nothing is stored on its servers, according to the homepage. Business plans include zero data retention. The homepage does not say whether data trains models.
Three details need your attention. Willow's zero retention appears on the Business and Enterprise plans, so ask which plan covers you. Willow's own policy also says it cannot guarantee absolute security. Aqua's privacy policy, as quoted by SayonaraType, says data may be stored to improve the product if Privacy Mode is off. Turn Privacy Mode on, then confirm it in the settings.
Common mistakes when switching from Willow Voice
Mistake one: judging the free tier by its label. The free plans measure different things. Aqua caps at 1,000 words. Wispr's homepage says 2,000 words per week, but its pricing page gives no number. Superwhisper limits Pro features to 3,000 words. Count your words for three days before you decide.
Mistake two: forgetting macOS permissions. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turn on the app you chose. If the app hears nothing, check that setting first. Then check the input device under System Settings > Sound > Input.
Dictation works best in a quiet room with a clear voice. · Image by rocheartist from Pixabay
Mistake three: a shortcut clash. Apple's built-in dictation can also use the fn or Globe key. Open System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation and turn off any shortcut that fights with your new app.
Mistake four: buying the wrong kind of tool. Dictation apps focus on typing text where your cursor sits. Lazur focuses on answers, guidance and voice actions, with dictation included. If you only type notes, a dictation app may fit better.
Mistake five: trusting accuracy claims without a test. Speak your real names, product codes and numbers, then check the output. One reviewer found Superwhisper changed numbers in transcripts. Your mic, your room and your accent change the result, so test in your own setup.
Worked example: yearly cost and usage limits
Start with cost. Aqua Voice Pro billed annually is $10 per month, or $120 a year. Lazur Pro billed annually is $15 per month, or $180 a year. Wispr Flow Pro billed annually is $12 per month, or $144 a year. Willow's Pro shows $12 with 'Save 20%' for annual, so check the billing period on the page before you count it.
Now the usage side. Say you dictate 2,000 words a week. Aqua Voice's free plan includes 1,000 words, and its pricing page does not give a period. Wispr's homepage says 2,000 words per week, which covers you with no margin. Any week with more words than that passes both free limits.
Lazur counts actions, not words. Pro includes 150 AI actions. If each question uses one action, that covers 15 days at 10 questions a day. Lazur's product facts do not define an action, so use the trial to see what one costs you.
