How to read a travel nurse contract blended rate on Mac: pay terms for 2026 contracts

A travel nurse contract blended rate is one hourly number that mixes taxable base pay with stipends. To read it, split the number into its parts and ask the agency for each part in writing. This page shows how to do that on a Mac, and where the tax rules get tricky.

The short answer

  • A blended rate mixes a taxable hourly base with stipends that may or may not be tax-free.
  • Split every pay line into one weekly figure, and mark each line taxable or not.
  • An assignment expected to last more than one year makes the new location your tax home.
  • Get the breakdown, guaranteed hours, and cancellation terms in writing before you sign.
  • Use Preview to mark up the clauses and Lazur to explain them, then check with your agency and a tax professional.

What reading travel contract pay terms costs you

A tax bill you did not plan for

If part of your stipend is taxable, the money you planned to keep may go to tax. The IRS says living-expense amounts from an indefinite assignment count as income, even when the contract calls them allowances. The gap often shows up at tax time, long after you signed. No study we found counts how often this happens.

Pay that looks bigger than it is

A blended rate can make an offer look larger than the taxable pay you actually take home. The gap comes from the stipend unit and the hours behind the number. If guaranteed hours fall short of the scheduled hours, the blend shrinks. You may only notice that in your first pay period.

Evenings spent reading

Reading a travel contract takes time on top of a full shift schedule. A long packet can cost an evening you did not plan for. No study we found measures how long contract review takes for nurses. Plan for the time, even though no one has measured it.

A stipend that stops when you need time off

If the stipend ends with a sick day, a family leave, or an early send-home, weekly pay can fall fast. Contracts differ on this point. Find the clause before you need it, not after a short week has already hit your bank account.

Signing before you have compared the terms

Signing before you read the addendum can lock in terms you never compared. Changing terms later may mean another negotiation with a recruiter who already has your signature. The cost is bargaining power, and it is hard to put a number on.

Why it happens

  1. Blends hide the split

Agencies blend a low taxable hourly base with stipends that may or may not be tax-free. A single number is easy to compare, so recruiters lead with it. The split stays in the fine print. You have to rebuild it yourself from the contract text.

  2. Stipends come in different units

Stipends are quoted by month, by week, or by hour. Each unit looks fine on its own. Side by side, the units are hard to compare, especially when one offer uses hours and another uses weeks. The mix hides the real total.

  3. Per diem means different things

Recruiters use the phrase per diem loosely. It can mean a daily allowance, a stipend of any kind, or part of the hourly pay. The same two words can describe different money in two contracts. Ask what the term means in the document you have open.

  4. The tax rule rarely comes up in the pitch

Tax treatment depends on your tax home and the assignment length. The IRS says an assignment expected to last more than one year is indefinite, and its location becomes your tax home. Living allowances then count as income. A recruiting call rarely walks through that rule, so you have to ask.

  5. Start dates and short offer windows

Offers often come with a short decision window and a start date that sits close by. That pressure makes a long contract feel like a formality. Skimming misses the stipend unit, the guaranteed hours, and the cancellation clause, which are the lines that matter most.

  6. Summaries replace the contract

A recruiter's summary is a sales document. It is written to make the offer easy to accept. The signed contract is the record you can rely on. When the two differ, check the contract and ask the agency which one it will honor in writing.

How to fix it

These work with or without any app.

  • Ask for a written pay breakdown

Email the recruiter and ask for the hourly base, each stipend, its unit, and whether each line is taxable. Ask for guaranteed hours as well. Keep the reply with the contract. This takes one email and no money.

  • Rebuild the offer in one weekly sheet

Make a table with one column per offer. Use rows for hourly base, guaranteed weekly hours, weekly taxable pay, weekly stipend, and cancellation terms. Numbers or Word will do. This is the method on this page, and it needs only a spreadsheet.

  • Mark up the clauses in Preview

Open the PDF in Preview. Highlight the pay lines, then add a Note with the unit and taxable status. Press ⌘F to find guarantee, cancel, and stipend. Export a marked copy with File > Export so the annotations stay editable.

  • Ask the agency how it sets your tax home

Ask directly how the agency sets your tax home and whether the assignment is temporary or indefinite. Then take that answer to a tax professional who works with travel nurses. The IRS publication is free to read on the IRS website.

  • Use the GSA lookup as a sanity check

Open the GSA per diem page, enter the assignment area, and note the rate. The lookup covers the continental United States. Compare the stipend to that rate, and ask the agency to explain any large gap. The page does not list standard lodging or meals amounts, so look for those elsewhere on the site.

  • Read the cancellation clauses out loud

Read the clauses on canceled shifts, time off, and early release out loud. Hearing the words helps you catch a may that should be a will. Write down any clause you cannot explain, and ask the agency about it by email.

  • Compare base to base, not blend to blend

Compare the hourly base to a staff hourly rate. Staff pay is taxable wages. The BLS median for registered nurses was $46.90 per hour in May 2025. That is a benchmark only, because BLS does not break out travel nurses, so it does not match any single offer.

  • Get a second reader

Ask a colleague who has done a travel assignment to read the same sheet. Ask them what they would ask the agency. A second read catches the unit mix-ups that a first read often misses.

What a blended rate actually includes

A blended rate is one hourly number that combines two kinds of pay. One part is the hourly base, which is taxable wages. The other part is stipends, which agencies pay to cover living costs. The agency adds the two, divides by the hours, and quotes a single figure. That figure looks high, and it hides how much of your money is taxed.

The blend helps recruiters because one number is easy to compare. It helps you less. Two offers with the same blended rate can pay very different amounts in cash. The difference sits in the split between base and stipend, and in the hours behind the number.

Common pay lines in a travel contract and what to ask about each.
Pay lineHow it is often quotedQuestion to ask in writing
Hourly basePer hour, paid as taxable wagesIs this the full hourly rate, and is it paid on every worked hour?
StipendPer week, per month, or per hourIs any part tax-free, and does it stop during time off?
Living-expense allowancePer week or per assignmentDoes this assignment count as indefinite, so the allowance is income?
Guaranteed hoursHours per weekWhat happens to pay if the unit cuts hours or cancels a shift?

Per diem is the phrase that causes the most trouble. Some recruiters use it for a daily meal and lodging allowance. Others use it for any stipend at all. The same two words can describe different money in two contracts. Ask what the term means in the document in front of you, and write the answer down.

Read the contract in this order

Start with the full packet, not the summary email. A packet can include the contract, one or more addenda, and a separate pay sheet. Read the pay sheet last. It may repeat the numbers in a format that hides the units, so check each figure against the contract text.

  1. Open the contract PDF in Preview. Use File > Open, then pick the file.
  2. If the toolbar is hidden, click Show Markup Toolbar at the top of the window.
  3. Highlight every line with a dollar figure, a stipend, or a per diem. Use Highlight Selection.
  4. Add a Note next to each highlight. Write the unit, the period, and whether it is taxable.
  5. Press ⌘F and search for guarantee, cancel, and per diem. Read each hit in context.
  6. Save a marked copy with File > Export. Keep the original clean so you can compare versions.

Do not use Redaction on your only copy. Apple's guide says a redaction becomes permanent when the document closes. Redact a separate copy, and only if you must share one. Your employer's rules on personal data apply to any copy you send to anyone.

Turn every pay line into one weekly number

A formula beats a feeling. Use the same unit for every line. Weeks work well because shifts repeat each week. Here is the method with letters, so you can drop in the real figures from your own contract.

Let B be the hourly base, H the hours you are guaranteed each week, and S the weekly stipend total. Your weekly blended pay is B times H, plus S. Split it into two columns. The taxable column is B times H. The stipend column is S, and only that column may be tax-free, if the setup qualifies.

  1. Convert monthly stipends to weekly figures, or ask the agency for weekly numbers.
  2. Convert hourly stipends to weekly figures by multiplying by the guaranteed hours.
  3. Use guaranteed hours for H, not the hours on a sample schedule.
  4. Put each offer in its own column, with the same rows in every column.
  5. Add a row for cancellation pay and what happens to stipends during time off.

Build the sheet in Numbers or Word. In Numbers, File > Export To > PDF saves a copy you can send to a recruiter or a tax preparer. Keep the live file too, so you can change a figure when the agency revises an offer.

Check the tax home before you trust the stipend

The tax home matters more than the label on the stipend. The IRS calls an assignment temporary when you realistically expect it to last one year or less. An assignment expected to last longer than one year is indefinite. For an indefinite assignment, the IRS says the new location becomes your tax home.

The stipend rule follows from that test. The IRS says that for an indefinite assignment, you must include in your income any amounts your employer pays for living expenses. That holds even if the employer calls them travel allowances and you account to them for the expenses. A contract label does not settle the tax question.

Check the stipend against the GSA per diem lookup

The General Services Administration publishes per diem rates for federal travel. Many people use its lookup as a sanity check. The page defaults to FY2027, and it says FY2027 rates apply from October 1, 2026. The lookup covers the continental United States, with about 300 non-standard areas.

The page does not list the standard lodging or meals and incidental amounts. You cannot read a full stipend cap from it alone. Look up your assignment area, note the rate, then find the standard amounts elsewhere on the GSA site. The page also does not explain how first and last travel days are paid, so ask the agency about those.

Mistakes that cost travel nurses the most

These mistakes are easy to make on a first read. Each one has a simple fix once you see it. Check your offer against this list before you reply to the recruiter.

  • Comparing a blended rate to a staff rate. Staff pay is taxable wages, so compare base to base.
  • Counting scheduled hours as guaranteed hours. Ask what happens when a unit cuts shifts.
  • Ignoring time off. Ask whether stipends continue during unpaid time off or early send-home days.
  • Signing before the addendum arrives. An addendum can change pay, so read the full packet first.
  • Trusting the recruiter's summary. A summary is not the contract. Ask for the clause that states each number.
  • Mixing units. A monthly stipend next to an hourly base hides the real weekly total.
  • Pasting the full contract into a chatbot. Remove names, IDs, and facility names first, and check your employer's rules.

Put the questions in writing before you sign

Email gives you the record you need. Ask the recruiter for written answers, then save them with the contract. You can ask Lazur to draft the email by voice, then edit the text yourself. Send it from your own account, so the reply lands where you can find it later.

  1. What is the hourly base, and is it paid on every worked hour?
  2. How much is the stipend each week, and is any part taxable?
  3. Which hours are guaranteed, and in what cases can they be cut?
  4. What happens to stipends during time off, orientation, or a float shift?
  5. Is this assignment expected to last one year or less, or longer?
  6. How much notice is required if the agency or the unit cancels?

Keep the replies with the contract. If an answer changes the numbers, ask for an updated pay sheet. A verbal promise does not change the contract, so get the change in writing before you rely on it.

What the research says about travel nurse pay

Research on travel nurse pay is thin. We found no study that measures how often nurses misread pay terms, or how long contract review takes. Those costs are unmeasured. The best available data describes the work around the pay, not the contract itself.

A cross-sectional survey of 373 nurses in Florida included 111 travel nurses. Pay satisfaction scores were 11.1 for travel nurses and 11.2 for staff nurses, a difference that was not significant. Both groups sat toward the dissatisfied end. Travel nurses reported higher physical fatigue, at 23.7 against 21.9, with P=.0257.

The Florida survey is small, and it measured attitudes, not contract errors. Read it as a reason to check fatigue and schedule terms along with pay. It does not prove that a blended rate causes problems on its own.

Edge cases to check before you accept

Some terms only matter in unusual weeks. Check them anyway. A contract that is clear in a normal week can still surprise you in a week when a shift is canceled or moved.

Ask what happens if the unit cancels your shifts. Ask whether the stipend stops when you are sent home early. Ask whether a float shift to another unit pays the same. Ask whether orientation hours are paid at the base rate or the stipend rate. Ask what changes if the assignment extends or ends early.

Ask how travel days are paid, too. The stipend rules for those days may differ from the rules for shift days. The contract should say which rules apply, and you should be able to point to the clause.

Privacy when you use Lazur on a contract

A travel contract holds personal details. It may show your name, address, license number, and facility names. Your employer may have rules about sharing any document that mentions patients or staff. Follow those rules before you share anything.

Before you ask Lazur about a contract, cover or delete personal identifiers in your copy. Never open a patient record next to the contract. Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models.

Where Lazur helps, and where it stops

Lazur explains what is on your screen, points at the clause you ask about, and answers out loud. It can guide you one click at a time in Preview or Numbers, and it can draft your email. It does not click buttons or edit your files for you. It is not a tax advisor.

Use it as a second reader. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask where the stipend is described. Then read the clause yourself. If the explanation and the contract disagree, trust the contract, and ask the agency to confirm in writing. For email help, see Outlook for nurses on Mac. For the comparison document, see Word on Mac.

Keep a record of what you were promised

Save the signed PDF, your marked copy, the email thread, and the weekly sheet in one folder. Name the folder with the agency and the start month. Months into the assignment, you will be glad you did. A clean record makes a payroll question a five-minute check.

Compare your first pay stub with the weekly sheet. If the two differ, ask the payroll team which line caused the gap. Pricing and downloads are on the pricing page and the download page, if you want Lazur on your Mac.

    Handles the small stuff

A plan you can start this week

  1. Pass one

    Get the full packet

Ask the recruiter for the contract, every addendum, and any pay sheet. Do not work from the summary email alone. Save each file in one folder before you start marking it up.

  2. Pass two

    Highlight the pay lines

Open the PDF in Preview. Highlight each dollar figure, stipend, per diem, and hours line. Add a Note that gives the unit, the period, and whether the line is taxable.

  3. Pass three

    Build the weekly sheet

Make one table in Numbers or Word with a column for each offer. Convert monthly and hourly stipends to weekly figures. Use guaranteed hours, not scheduled hours, for every calculation.

  4. Email

    Send the questions in writing

Draft the questions in Outlook and ask for written answers. You can ask Lazur to draft the email by voice, then edit it yourself before you send it.

  5. Tax check

    Ask about the tax home

Ask the agency how it sets your tax home and whether the assignment is temporary or indefinite. Take the answer to a tax professional who works with travel nurses.

  6. Before you sign

    Confirm the edge cases

Check the cancellation, time-off, orientation, and travel-day clauses. Make sure each one has an answer in writing. A blank clause is a question to ask, not a gap to ignore.

  7. After you sign

    File the record

Save the signed contract, your marked copy, the email thread, and the weekly sheet together. Compare your first pay stub to the sheet, and ask about any difference right away.

Questions people ask

What is a travel nurse contract blended rate?

It is one hourly figure that combines a taxable hourly base with stipends that cover living costs. The stipends may or may not be tax-free, depending on your tax home and assignment length. Split the number into its parts before you compare offers.

Is my travel nurse stipend tax-free?

It depends on your situation. The IRS says an assignment expected to last more than one year is indefinite. For an indefinite assignment, living-expense amounts from your employer count as income, even when the contract calls them allowances. Ask a tax professional about your case.

What does tax home mean for travel nurses?

Tax home is the work location the IRS uses for tax purposes. The IRS uses a one-year test. An assignment expected to last more than one year is indefinite, and its location becomes your tax home.

How do I compare two travel nursing offers?

Convert every pay line to a weekly figure. Use guaranteed hours, not scheduled hours. Mark each line taxable or not, then compare base to base and stipend to stipend. Keep the sheet and the written answers together.

Can I ask the agency to put the pay breakdown in writing?

Yes. You can ask by email. A written answer gives you a record to check against the signed contract. If the agency will not answer in writing, treat that refusal as information about the offer.

Can I paste my travel contract into an AI tool?

Check your employer's rules first. Remove names, license numbers, addresses, and facility details. Never include patient information. Lazur sends audio and the screenshot to AI providers to answer, and does not store them.

Where do I find the per diem rate for an assignment city?

The GSA per diem lookup covers the continental United States, with about 300 non-standard areas. FY2027 rates apply from October 1, 2026. The page does not list standard lodging or meals amounts, so you need another source for those.
