Real estate license CE deadline Florida: a Mac routine so you stop missing it
Your real estate license CE deadline in Florida is set by the state, and a miss can cost you late fees and active status in some states. The fix is to write the exact date down, then put it in a Mac alert weeks ahead. This page shows that routine, using Texas, California and Maryland rules as worked examples, because their numbers are published and checkable.
The short answer
- Write the exact CE due date from your state's licensing site, not from memory.
- Late costs differ. California's late salesperson renewal is $525, against $350 on time.
- Set two Apple Reminders alerts per license: an early one and one close to the due date.
- Check the state's own tool inside its window. In Texas, that window opens 90 days before expiration.
- Lazur can set the reminder by voice and guide you through the state site, but you do the clicking.
What tracking license ce deadlines costs you
Late renewal fees
California shows how fast late renewal costs add up. A salesperson pays $525 late instead of $350 on time. A broker pays $675 instead of $450. These are the state's own fees, and they are easy to avoid with a dated reminder.
A deferral fee that buys time
Texas lets you pay a $200 CE deferral fee when you renew without finished CE. The deferral gives you 60 more days from the expiration date to finish. That is time, bought at a price. It does not waive the hours.
Active status on hold
Renewing inactive in Texas avoids finishing CE for that renewal. But TREC says you must complete the hours before you return to active status. Time spent inactive is time away from active status, and you can plan around it only if you know the date.
Maryland reinstatement and audit risk
Maryland wants CE finished 30 days before renewal to avoid a reinstatement fee. The page does not state that fee. Maryland also warns that random CE audits may lead to disciplinary charges if you fail to comply or respond.
Hours spent hunting for dates
Without one list, you rebuild the due date each time someone asks. You search old emails, portal screens and certificates. The state rule and your own records may also disagree, so you spend time working out which one is right.
Why it happens
Future tasks have no built-in cue
Remembering a task for later works in two ways, according to the WashU memory lab. You can keep watching for it, which costs attention. Or a cue can trigger it. A CE deadline gives you few cues, so it depends on your watching.
The deadline sits two years away
Texas counts CE per two-year license period, so the due date can feel far off for most of that time. A task that is far away gets pushed behind this week's showings and calls. The date then arrives with little warning.
The state check tool opens late
In Texas, the renewal education tool is available only within 90 days of your expiration date. You cannot see your CE status months ahead on that tool. Many agents look near the end of the window, when there is little time left to finish hours.
Someone else seems to own it
You may assume your brokerage tracks CE, or that the course provider will remind you. The license belongs to you. Provider reminders and brokerage systems vary, so check your own record.
Course proof lives in too many places
Certificates often sit in a provider's account or an old email. At renewal time, you search for proof of completion. Saving each certificate to one folder when you finish stops that search.
How to fix it
These work with or without any app.
Write the exact date from the state site
Start with the state's own rule page. Copy the expiration date, the required hours and the late cost into a note with today's date. A date taken from memory or a forum post is an easy way to miss one.
Set a dated Apple Reminders alert with an early warning
Open Reminders, create the item, and click Edit Details. Turn on Date under Date & Time, then use the early reminder pop-up for an advance alert. Pick an early date you can act on, not only the due date itself.
Mirror the deadline in Calendar
Calendar can show your reminders in the same view as meetings and showings. Click Create Quick Event in the toolbar, choose New Reminder, and set the date next to remind me. Turn on Scheduled Reminders to see it in the calendar list.
Keep one CE tracker in Google Sheets
One sheet with one row per license shows what is due, what is done and what is left. A plain yes or no column for the alert catches gaps. The sheet needs only the state's numbers and your course records, and nothing else.
Check the state tool before its window closes
If your state has a window for checking CE status, put the day that window opens on your calendar. In Texas, the tool opens 90 days before expiration. Use that day to confirm your hours, not the final week.
Get the rule in writing from the state or your broker
Email the state board or your broker and ask them to confirm the due date, the hours and the late cost. Keep the reply with the saved rule page. A written answer is easier to show later than a memory of a phone call.
This page uses Texas, California and Maryland as worked examples, because their rules can be checked against official pages. Florida's exact CE hours, due date and late penalty are not stated here. Pull them from the state's licensing board before you set any date. The tracking routine below works the same way in every state.

How much does a missed CE deadline cost a realtor?
The fee is the easiest cost to measure. The bigger cost is time and status. No study I checked counts how many agents miss CE deadlines, or what a miss costs them in hours or stress. Treat any percentage with no named source as a guess.

Real estate sales agent jobs in 2025, roughly, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics
BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Real Estate Brokers and Sales Agents$52,830
Median pay for real estate sales agents, May 2025
BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Real Estate Brokers and Sales Agents| State | Rule checked | Cost if you are late |
|---|---|---|
| Texas | 18 hours per two-year license period | $200 deferral fee for 60 more days, or renew inactive |
| California | Renewal fees (CE hours not checked here) | Late renewal: $525 salesperson, $675 broker |
| Maryland | 15 hours per renewal period, 45 across three | Finish 30 days before renewal to avoid a reinstatement fee (amount not stated) |
| Florida | Not verified on this page | Not verified on this page |
California shows the math. A salesperson pays $525 late instead of $350 on time. A broker pays $675 instead of $450. Late fees are easy to avoid, so plan for the due date before it passes.
Texas adds a second cost. You can renew inactive without finishing CE. TREC says you must finish the hours before you return to active status. A missed deadline can keep you off active status, not only cost you a fee.
Why do CE deadlines slip past organized agents?
Psychologists call remembering to do something later prospective memory. The WashU memory lab describes two routes. You can keep watching for the task, which uses attention on whatever you are doing. Or a cue can bring the task back on its own. A CE deadline gives you few cues. Nothing tugs at you on an ordinary Tuesday.
A WashU page cites Crovitz and Daniel (1984) as finding that at least half of everyday forgetting comes from prospective memory failures. The original was not checked here, and it did not study realtors. Use the idea as a reason to set reminders, not as a measured rate for agents.
Texas also limits when you can check. Its renewal education tool works only within 90 days of your expiration date. You cannot confirm CE status months ahead on that tool. If you wait for the tool, you may learn about a gap too late.
- A deadline two years away feels like no task at all.
- Nothing in your daily work points back to it.
- You may assume your brokerage tracks it. Check, because the license is yours.
Find the exact deadline before you set a reminder
Start with the state, not with a blog post. Work through these steps once per license, then save what you found.
- Open your state's real estate commission or licensing board site. For Texas, start with the TREC renewal education page.
- Write down the expiration date from your license record or online account.
- Note the CE hours and course types the state requires for your license.
- Note what a late renewal or deferral costs, and any days you get after expiration.
- Save the rule page as a PDF, with the date you checked it in the file name.
Two details trip people up. Maryland wants CE done 30 days before your renewal date to avoid a reinstatement fee. Course vendor blogs often lag behind rule changes. Maryland's new CE regulations took effect October 1, 2024, so an old post may be wrong. Use the state site for every number.
Fix 1: set the deadline in Apple Reminders
- Open Reminders and create a new reminder. Title it with the task, such as Finish CE hours.
- Select the reminder and click Edit Details.
- Turn on Date under Date & Time, then set the due date.
- Turn on Time only if you want an alert at a specific hour and minute.
- Open the early reminder pop-up and pick an advance alert.
- For a repeating task, open the repeat pop-up. For a custom interval, choose Custom, then Frequency.
Set two alerts for every license. The first lands while you still have room to finish the hours. The second lands close to the due date. Maryland's 30-day rule is a good model for the early one. Paste the rule page link into the reminder, so the source is one click away.

Fix 2: mirror the deadline in Calendar
Calendar gives you a second place to see the same deadline. Click Create Quick Event in the toolbar, then choose New Reminder. Set the date next to remind me, and pick a Reminders list or leave the default. Turn on the Scheduled Reminders checkbox in the calendar list to see them there. Deleted items go to Recently Deleted in Reminders, so a mistake can be undone.
Fix 3: keep one CE tracker in Google Sheets
A sheet holds more than one license and more than one deadline. Make one row per license. The columns below hold the facts you need at a glance.
| Column | What to put in it |
|---|---|
| State | The state that issued the license |
| Due date | Expiration date from your license record |
| CE needed | Hours and course types from the state's rule page |
| CE done | Hours completed so far, updated after each course |
| Hours left | A formula: CE needed minus CE done |
| Source and checked | Link to the rule page and the date you read it |
Add a column that says whether the Reminders alert is set. A plain yes or no catches the gap a missing alert leaves. For the sheet setup, see /for/realtors/google-sheets. Save each certificate to one folder, and link it in the row.
Fix 4: check the state tool before its window closes
Each state has its own window for checking. The Texas tool works only within 90 days of expiration, so put a Calendar item on the day that window opens. For Maryland, put an item 30 days before renewal, the date the CE must be finished.
Ask for confirmation in writing. Write to your state board or broker and ask them to confirm the due date and the late cost. Use Gmail for the request, and save the reply in the license folder. For a faster inbox routine, see /for/realtors/gmail.
Common mistakes that cost realtors time
- Setting one alert on the due date. A same-day alert leaves no time to finish.
- Trusting an old post for hours or fees. Maryland's new CE regulations took effect October 1, 2024.
- Thinking an inactive renewal finishes the job. In Texas, CE comes before active status.
- Keeping certificates only in email. Save each one to a folder you can search.
- Waiting for a state notice. Maryland warns that random CE audits can lead to disciplinary charges if you fail to comply or respond.
Where Lazur helps, and where it does not
Lazur is a voice assistant that lives in the notch of your Mac. Hold ⌥ ⌘ to ask about anything on screen, and Lazur answers out loud. Ask where a button is on the state's site, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to do a task, and Lazur guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click.
Lazur does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. You still do the clicking on the state site and in your CE course. Lazur can set dated reminders and Calendar events by voice. Hold fn to dictate a clean note at the cursor. Research runs in Lazur's own Chrome tabs and returns a summary and report, so check the state's page before you trust a summary. Pricing is on the pricing page.
A seven-day setup plan for CE deadlines
Spend about a week on this, one step per day. Each day adds one layer, so you can stop after any day and still be ahead of where you started.
