Google Sheets for supply chain planners on Mac: setup, shortcuts, and limits for 2026
Google Sheets for supply chain planners on Mac works well for inventory counts, forecast tables, and S&OP reviews, as long as you know its limits. Run it in Chrome or Edge if you need offline access, and learn the ⌘ shortcuts first. This guide covers both, plus file size limits, templates, and the common mistakes that slow a planning review.

Lazur · points at itLazur draws a circle and a label around Template Gallery at the top right of the sheet, so you know where to click next.
Quick answer
- Google Sheets runs in any Mac browser, and many planners use it for inventory, forecast, and S&OP files.
- Google's offline help names Chrome or Microsoft Edge for offline access. Safari is not mentioned.
- Learn ⌘+D, ⌘+R, ⌘+F, and Option+/ first. Option+/ opens Tool finder for any menu command.
- Google's Drive help lists up to 20 million cells or 100MB per spreadsheet. Connected Sheets previews only 500 rows.
- Give each shared number one owner and one tab. Most S&OP sheet problems come from copies that drift apart.

Most supply chain planners do not pick Google Sheets because it is the best tool for the job. They pick it because anyone with a Google Account can create a spreadsheet, and it opens in a Mac browser with no install. One file can hold a demand forecast, an inventory count, and a list of open orders. That mix is why so many S&OP teams still work this way.
Why planners on Mac keep working in Google Sheets
The numbers back this up. An AbcSupplyChain survey of 164 S&OP and IBP professionals in 54 countries found that 81.1% run their process in Excel or Google Sheets. The article does not name its sponsor. It covers all S&OP and IBP roles, not planners alone. Treat it as a strong signal, not a census.

Open Google Sheets in Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Google's offline help names those two browsers for offline access, and it uses the Google Docs Offline extension. Private and incognito windows do not support offline access. Only one account per browser profile can have offline turned on. If you switch between a work account and a personal one, give each its own Chrome profile.
Google's offline page does not mention Mac or Safari. Some third-party guides say Safari works, and some say it does not. Test offline mode on your own Mac before you need it on a flight or in a warehouse with weak Wi-Fi. Very large files may fail to sync, so test with your real file, not a small sample.
To start from a template, open Google Sheets and click Template Gallery at the top right. Pick one, and a copy opens. Google's examples are CVs, budgets, and order forms. Some template features only work on work or school accounts.
Keyboard shortcuts in Google Sheets on Mac
Google's keyboard page lists the Mac versions, with ⌘ for Command and ⌥ for Option. Learn these first. They cover most of the planning work you do each day.
- ⌘+A selects all cells in the sheet.
- ⌘+F opens Find, so you can jump to an item code.
- ⌘+D fills the selected cell down the column.
- ⌘+R fills the selected cell to the right.
- ⌘+Option+T converts a range to a table.
- ⌘+/ shows the common shortcuts list.
- Option+/ opens Tool finder. Google used to call it Search the menus.
- On a MacBook, Option+Right Arrow and Option+Left Arrow move between sheet tabs.
Here is a common case. You write a formula at the top of a forecast column, such as one that multiplies units by price. Select that cell and the cells below it, then press ⌘+D. The formula fills down the column. Check the first few rows after the fill, because a reference that should stay fixed can shift.
When you forget a shortcut, press Option+/ and type what you want. Tool finder searches the menus for you. Older guides may still say Search the menus, which is the old name for the same tool.
Google Sheets limits for large planning data on Mac
Planners hit a wall when a sheet holds a long history of shipments. Google's Drive help says a Google Sheets spreadsheet can hold up to 20 million cells or 100MB. Many third-party guides still say 10 million cells. Use Google's figure, and still keep your file well under it.
| Item | Limit | Where Google states it |
|---|---|---|
| Spreadsheet size | Up to 20 million cells or 100MB | Google Drive help |
| Connected Sheets preview | 500 rows shown | Google Cloud BigQuery docs |
| Connected Sheets extract | Up to 500,000 rows, and 5 million cells above 50,000 rows | Google Cloud BigQuery docs |
| Connected Sheets pivot table | 200,000 rows | Google Drive help |
| Excel conversion | Cells over 50,000 characters are removed | Google Drive help |
Connected Sheets is the other route for big data. It links a sheet to BigQuery, so the data stays in the warehouse. Google Cloud says the sheet shows only a 500-row preview. Pivot tables, formulas, and charts still use the full dataset. The preview looks small, but the numbers come from everything.
Google's own pages disagree in one place. The BigQuery doc gives a 200,000 row limit for pivot tables in one section and 100,000 results in another. Plan for the smaller number until you test your own file.
Refresh rules also limit planners with Sheets-only access. They cannot refresh BigQuery data by hand or schedule refreshes. Scheduled refreshes can also fail under some VPC Service Controls perimeters. Ask your data team before you promise a weekly refresh to the planning group.
Inventory and forecast templates for Google Sheets
The template gallery gives you a fast start, but it is thin for planning. I could not find a Google-made supply chain or planning template in Google's help. The gallery examples are general. Third-party inventory templates are a better starting point, if you check them first.
Sheetgo's review of free inventory templates describes one that tracks stock in and out across tabs. It keeps a running stock count and a minimum level for each item. A status column flags low stock. The article does not mention forecasting, so you add the forecast yourself.
A basic inventory tab needs these columns.
- Item code, the same key in every tab, so lookups work.
- On-hand count, updated from receipts and shipments.
- Minimum level, the stock you want on hand before a reorder.
- Status column, a formula that flags anything below the minimum.
- Owner, the person who answers for this number.
Keep the forecast on its own tab with one named owner. Link the inventory tab to it with formulas, not copy-paste. Copy-paste is where versions split apart.
Build a forecast tab that the team can read
Start with one row per item and one column per month. Put actuals on the left and the forecast on the right. Label each forecast column with its method, such as statistical or sales override. That label shows where each number came from.
Give sales overrides their own tab. Overrides change often. If they sit inside the forecast, nobody can see the baseline the statistics produced. Protect the baseline tab so that edits only happen when someone means them.
A chart helps the review. Plot forecast and actuals on one chart, then check the axis labels before the meeting. Make a chart in Google Sheets shows the steps for Chrome and Safari.
Status columns break when one person types low and another types Low stock. A dropdown list stops that. Use one list per status column, and keep the values short. Create a dropdown list shows the steps for Chrome.

Why shared S&OP sheets go wrong
The same survey gives the complaints. One respondent wrote, “Each team has their own spreadsheet. We waste time reconciling instead of deciding.” Another wrote, “No one really owns the number.” That line describes the gap between a statistical forecast and what sales or management expect.
Two more complaints fit this pattern. One says the meetings go in every direction. Another says nothing is centralized, with too many systems to update. A sheet will not fix a meeting. It can fix the number. Put one forecast tab in one file, and name the owner at the top.
Dated context helps too. A 2018 Adelante SCM survey of 140 executives, commissioned by BluJay Solutions, found 67.4% said they used spreadsheets as a supply chain system. That question covered the tool in general, not Google Sheets on Mac. A 2013 Logility and Consumer Goods Technology study reported that more than 70 percent could not execute their S&OP vision. It gave no sample size.
Mistakes planners make in Google Sheets on Mac
- Trusting the 500-row preview as the full data. Pivots and formulas use the full set.
- Planning near the cell limit without checking the file size first.
- Opening offline mode in an incognito window. Google says private windows do not support it.
- Turning on offline access for two accounts in one Chrome profile. Only one account per profile can have it.
- Converting an Excel file with very long notes. Cells over 50,000 characters are removed.
- Treating a template as a forecast. Templates track stock, but the forecast is your job.
Most of these mistakes are cheap to fix early. They are expensive in a review meeting, when the numbers are already on a slide and someone has printed them.
Where Lazur fits while you work in Google Sheets
Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘ to ask about anything on your screen, and Lazur answers out loud. It does not click buttons or edit your sheet. It is not a plugin or add-in for Google Sheets or any other app.
Use it for the questions that stop you mid-task. Ask where the Template Gallery is, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to turn on a setting, and Lazur guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click.
Hold fn to dictate clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app. That helps with meeting notes or a comment on a cell. Dictation is unlimited on both paid plans. Snippets, a personal dictionary, and clipboard slots come with it.
Lazur has a 3-day Pro trial with no credit card. The trial starts when you first open the app. Pro costs $18/month, or $15/month billed annually, with 150 AI actions. Power costs $120/month, or $96/month billed annually, with 1,000 AI actions. Check the pricing page for current terms.
Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer you, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models. If your sheet holds supplier or customer data, check your company policy before you ask about it.
A weekly inventory check, step by step
Here is a routine many planners run each week. Import the warehouse counts as a CSV into a new tab. Import a CSV in Google Sheets covers the File menu steps and common fixes. Then freeze the header row so item codes stay visible while you scroll, using freeze the top row.
Sort by the status column to bring the low-stock items to the top. Sort data by column shows the steps. If the warehouse file repeats an item code, remove duplicate rows before you count. Then count unique values so the total does not depend on repeats.
Save the finished check to a shared folder with the date in the file name. If a number changes after the meeting, see the revision history to find who changed it and when.

Next steps for your planning sheet
- Pick one owner for each number that feeds a meeting.
- Test offline mode in Chrome before you travel with the file.
- Check your file size against Google's 20 million cell limit.
- Learn ⌘+D, ⌘+R, ⌘+F, and Option+/ until they feel automatic.
- Read the Connected Sheets docs before you promise a refresh schedule.
