Quick answer

  • Select the cells you want to chart, including the header row if you have one.
  • Click Insert in the menu bar, then choose Chart.
  • In the chart editor, pick a chart type in Setup, then add titles and axis labels in Customize.
  • If the chart stops updating, check the data range, numbers stored as text, and hidden rows.

What you need

  • A Mac with Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge
  • A Google account with edit access to the spreadsheet
  • Data with labels in the first row
  • For offline use only: Chrome or Microsoft Edge with the Google Docs Offline extension

How to Make a chart in Google Sheets on Mac in Google Sheets on a Mac

  1. Open your spreadsheet in the browser

Open the Google Sheets file in Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge. Google Sheets does not run as a separate Mac app, so the browser is the app. Sign in if the file asks you to.

  2. Select the cells to chart

Click the first cell, then drag to the last cell. Include the header row if you want names on the legend and axis. Include the label column too, so each point has a name.

Tip: Select only the columns you need. Extra columns can add extra series to the chart.

  3. Open the Insert menu

    Insert

In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Insert. The menu lists rows, columns, images, charts and more.

  4. Choose Chart

    InsertChart

Click Chart in the Insert menu. Google adds a chart to the sheet. The chart editor usually opens on the side so you can adjust it.

Tip: If Chart is missing, check that cells are selected and that you have edit access.

  5. Check the chart type in Setup

    SetupChart type

In the chart editor, open the Setup tab. Use the Chart type dropdown to pick a type. The dropdown holds the full list, including line, column, bar, pie and scatter.

  6. Confirm the data range

    SetupData range

Still in Setup, look at Data range. It shows the cells the chart reads. Click it to edit the selection, or add another range. If the range is wrong, fix it here instead of moving cells around.

  7. Set the header options

Use the header options in Setup to tell Sheets whether the first row or column holds labels. A wrong choice can turn a header into a data point, so check the preview.

  8. Add titles and axis labels

    CustomizeChart & axis titles

Click the Customize tab. Use the chart and axis title fields to name the chart and both axes. Add the unit in the axis title, such as dollars or hours, so readers do not have to guess.

  9. Set gridlines, legend and style

    CustomizeLegend

In Customize, switch gridlines on or off, show or hide the legend, and change Chart style. Chart style covers the background and fonts. Pick a plain background if the chart will go into a document.

  10. Move and resize the chart

Click the chart and drag it to a clear area of the sheet. Drag a corner to resize it. Keep the chart away from data cells it might cover.

  11. Close the editor and check the result

When the chart looks right, close the chart editor. Read the title and both axis labels once more.

Tip: Double-click the chart at any time to reopen the editor. You do not need to rebuild the chart to change it.

What you need before you make a chart

You need a Google account, a spreadsheet you can edit, and a web browser. Google Sheets does not come as a separate app for macOS, so the browser is the app. Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge all run it. The web app is updated continuously, so Google's pages give no version number for Sheets.

Google asks you to use one of the two most recent versions of your browser. Other browsers may work, with fewer features. Update your browser before you start. If a menu looks different from the steps here, check the browser version first, then look again.

Set up your data so the chart reads it correctly

A chart reads only the cells you select. It cannot guess what a column means. Put a label at the top of each column, such as Month or Revenue. Put category names, such as months or product names, in the first column.

Scan the sheet before you select anything. Look for typos in category names. Two spellings of the same product become two separate bars or slices, and the chart shows both. Fix the spelling once in the cell, and the chart follows.

  • Put headers in the first row, such as Month and Revenue.
  • Keep one kind of value in each column. Dates go in one column and amounts go in another.
  • Store numbers as numbers. Charts ignore or misplot numbers that are stored as text.
  • Remove blank rows inside the data, because they break the continuity of the chart.
  • Clear filters you no longer need and unhide rows, because hidden rows can hide data from the chart.

A worked example: a monthly sales chart

Say your sheet has one row per month. Column A holds the month names, and column B holds the total sales for each month. Row 1 holds the headers, Month and Sales. Your data then sits in two columns with no gaps between rows.

Click the first cell in the header row, then drag down and across to the last value in column B. Choose Insert > Chart. The header options in Setup tell Sheets whether row 1 holds labels, so check that setting once the chart appears.

For monthly totals, a line chart or a column chart usually reads best. A line chart shows the trend over time. A column chart makes each month easy to compare with the others. Try both, then keep the one a reader understands faster.

How to make a chart in Google Sheets on Mac, step by step

The steps below use the menu names you see in the browser. Work through them in order the first time. After a few charts, the path becomes automatic.

Two Mac details change the shortcuts you may know from Windows. Command (⌘) replaces Ctrl in most Sheets shortcuts, and Option replaces Alt. Some entries still use Ctrl, so check the list before you rely on one. Press ⌘ + / to open Google's full list of shortcuts.

Google's chart help page lists no keyboard shortcut for inserting a chart. Use the Insert menu for that step. The shortcuts that the chart help page does list work after you select a chart.

Choose a Google Sheets chart type that fits your data

Chart type decides what a reader sees first. Google's chart help page names line, area, column, bar, scatter, pie, waterfall, histogram, radar, candlestick, treemap and combo charts. That list is not complete. The Chart type dropdown in the Setup tab is the full list.

Common chart types and when they fit. Based on Google's chart type names.
Chart typeUse it when
LineYou want to show change over time, such as weekly sales.
ColumnYou want to compare a few categories side by side.
BarCategory names are long and need room to read.
PieYou show parts of one whole, with only a few slices.
ScatterYou compare two number columns to look for a pattern.
ComboYou want two series with different shapes, such as columns and a line.

Choose a line chart when time runs left to right, such as weeks or months. Choose a column or bar chart to compare categories. Bar charts suit long category names, because the labels get more room. Pie charts work only with a few slices that add up to one whole.

Edit titles, legend and gridlines in the chart editor

Double-click a chart to open the chart editor on the right. The Setup tab holds the Chart type dropdown, the Data range and the header options. The Customize tab holds gridlines, chart and axis titles, the legend and Chart style. Chart style covers the background and fonts.

Here is a worked example. Say your chart shows revenue by month, and the axis has no name. Open Customize, type a chart title such as Revenue by month, then add an axis title that names the unit. Turn off the legend if it only repeats the title.

A reader should understand the chart from its title and axis labels alone, without opening your sheet. Spend a minute on those labels before you move on. They do more work than any colour or font choice.

Google Sheets chart not updating: fixes that work

A chart keeps the data range you gave it. When you add rows under the data, the chart may not include them. Open the chart editor, go to Setup, and look at Data range. Extend the range, for example to A1:B1000, or use whole columns such as A:B.

Whole-column ranges pick up new rows on their own. They also take in the header row and any notes you type below the data. Check the chart after you switch to whole columns, and look for stray labels or totals.

Blank rows break the continuity of a chart. Hidden rows and filters can hide data from the chart too. Clear the filter or unhide the rows, then look at the chart again.

Why numbers and dates in a chart come out wrong

A number stored as text looks like a number, but the chart does not count it as one. The chart ignores it or puts it in the wrong place. Fix the cells before you rebuild the chart. In a helper column, use =VALUE(A2) for numbers or =DATEVALUE(A2) for dates. You can also select the cells and use Format > Number.

If your formulas do not recalculate, the chart stays out of date. Edit any cell and press Return to force a refresh. A third-party guide also suggests checking File > Settings > Calculation and setting it to On change. That advice is not from Google, so confirm it in your own sheet before you rely on it.

  • Confirm the Data range in Setup covers every row you need.
  • Chart a cleaned range built with =FILTER(A2:B1000, A2:A1000<>"") if blank rows stay in the data.
  • Remove filters and unhide rows that hold data the chart should show.
  • If the chart still looks broken, delete it and insert a new one with Insert > Chart.

Work within Google Sheets file limits

Google's file limits say a spreadsheet can hold up to 20 million cells or 100MB. Pivot tables in Connected Sheets can use up to 200k rows. Most sheets never get close to those figures.

If your data grows past those limits, split it across tabs and chart a summary. A chart of monthly totals reads just as well as a chart of every raw row, and it loads faster.

How common is charting in spreadsheets?

A 2022 survey by ThoughtSpot asked office workers in the US, UK and Australia about their spreadsheets. It found that 87% build graphs or charts from spreadsheet data. Of those, 44% find it easy. The same survey found that 40% on average struggle to make sense of their data.

Make a chart in Google Sheets offline on Mac

Offline editing on a Mac needs Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Safari is not listed for offline use on Mac. Private or incognito windows are not allowed. Install the Google Docs Offline extension, then turn on the Offline setting in Drive Settings. Open Drive Settings with the gear icon, then choose Settings.

Box-and-whisker charts on Mac

Google announced native box-and-whisker charts on 22 Oct 2026. Rollout started that day for Rapid Release domains. Scheduled Release domains got it on 6 Nov 2026. Visibility can take up to 15 days, and it may differ by domain.

Google's post points to the general chart help page for steps. That page does not yet list box-and-whisker steps, so check the Chart type dropdown in Setup. If the option is missing, your domain may not have it yet.

Mistakes that cost people time

  • Selecting only the numbers. The chart then has no labels to show.
  • Charting a fixed range and expecting new rows to appear on their own.
  • Pasting numbers from a web page and leaving them as text.
  • Forgetting that a filter can hide rows from the chart.
  • Adding a title to the sheet but not to the chart. The chart title is a separate field in Customize.

Where to go next

If your data is not ready yet, sort it first. Sort data by column puts rows in order. Remove duplicate rows stops double counting before it reaches the chart.

Once the chart works, freeze the top row so your headers stay on screen while you scroll. Before you share the file, read the chart title and axis labels once more, as if you had never seen the data.

If it does not work

The chart is empty or shows only some points.
Check Data range in Setup first and make sure it covers your data. Then look for numbers stored as text, hidden rows, filters and blank rows in the middle of the range.
New rows do not appear in the chart.
Extend the Data range in Setup, such as A1:B1000, or switch to whole columns such as A:B. Then confirm the chart shows the new rows.
Dates or numbers plot in the wrong place.
Convert text with =VALUE(A2) for numbers or =DATEVALUE(A2) for dates in a helper column. You can also select the cells and use Format > Number.
The chart does not change after a formula updates.
Edit any cell and press Return to force a refresh. A third-party guide also suggests checking File > Settings > Calculation and setting it to On change.
The chart looks glitched or stays broken after edits.
Delete the chart and insert a new one with Insert > Chart. Then rebuild the titles and the data range in the chart editor.
The chart editor does not open.
Double-click the chart itself, not the sheet around it. If nothing happens, click the chart once to select it, then double-click again.

Questions people ask

Can I make a chart in Google Sheets on Mac using Safari?

Yes. Sheets runs in Safari, and the chart steps match Chrome. Offline editing is the exception. Google's offline rules for Mac name Chrome and Microsoft Edge, so offline use needs one of those.

Why is Chart missing from the Insert menu?

Select the cells first, then open Insert again. Chart needs data to plot. If it still does not appear, check that you have edit access to the file, then reload the page.

What is the difference between the Setup and Customize tabs?

Setup controls the data. It holds the Chart type dropdown, the Data range and the header options. Customize controls how the chart looks, with titles, gridlines, the legend and Chart style.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to insert a chart?

Google's chart help page lists no shortcut for inserting a chart. The chart shortcuts it does list work after a chart is selected. Google's Mac shortcut page lists Insert menu combinations but does not say which browsers they work in, so test them before you rely on one.

How do I make a chart update when I add new data?

Use a range that covers future rows, such as A1:B1000, or whole columns such as A:B. Keep numbers as numbers and avoid blank rows inside the data. Recheck the chart after big changes.

How big can the data behind a chart get?

Google Drive's file limits say a spreadsheet can hold up to 20 million cells or 100MB. Pivot tables in Connected Sheets can use up to 200k rows.

Can I make a box-and-whisker chart on Mac yet?

Maybe. Google's rollout started on 22 Oct 2026 for Rapid Release domains and on 6 Nov 2026 for Scheduled Release domains. Visibility can take up to 15 days, so check the Chart type dropdown in Setup.
