Quick answer

  • Pages stays free. Premium templates, Content Hub images and AI features need Apple Creator Studio.
  • Word-processing templates suit handouts and newsletters. Page layout templates suit flyers, but their text sits in boxes.
  • Mail merge builds letters home. Track Changes handles feedback, but an author filter can hide your own edits.
  • Word files keep tracking on body text only. Themes, watermarks and page borders do not survive the import.
  • Lazur points, guides and dictates in Pages. It does not click for you. Hold ⌥⌘ to ask, or hold fn to dictate.

Handles the small stuff · Pages

Most teacher work in Pages is plain. You need a clear handout, a letter with a name in it, or a page of feedback on a student draft. Pages handles all three. Apple's user guide describes two document kinds, word processing and page layout. That choice affects how easy the file is for someone else to edit later. Pick the kind first.

What Pages costs a teacher in 2026

Pages for Mac is free to download. In January 2026, Apple split the app into a free core and a paid edition. Pages, Keynote and Numbers stayed free. Premium templates, Content Hub images and AI image tools need Apple Creator Studio. MacRumors reported the change on January 28, 2026. On that day, Pages 14.5 got only a notice that it will no longer get new features. New features, free or paid, now need the Creator Studio edition, version 15.1.

Pricing matters most to teachers who qualify for education pricing. Apple's student page lists $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year for college students and educators, after a one-month free trial. Verification happens once a year. Family Sharing does not work with education pricing. Read the Apple page to see whether you qualify.

The paid side has had a rough start. TidBITS reports that the App Store rating for Pages dropped from 4.6 to 2.5 after the change. Users also disliked the upsell prompts. Premium templates appear first in the Template Chooser, and there is no way to filter them out, according to the same report.

If you cancel, you keep access to Pages, Keynote, Numbers and Freeform. You lose the intelligence features. Apple says your documents stay accessible. The free app still makes handouts, so a cancellation does not strand your files.

Pick the right template type for each job

Open a new document with File > New. Apple's template guide sorts the templates into two groups. Essay and School Newsletter are word-processing templates. So are the Basic templates and the book templates in portrait orientation. Tab Flyer and Museum Brochure are page layout templates. Business card templates are page layout too, and their text sits in text boxes.

Common teacher templates in Pages, grouped by document type
TemplateTypeUse it for
EssayWord processingWritten handouts with long text and sections
School NewsletterWord processingFamily newsletters you edit often
Basic templatesWord processingBlank pages for worksheets and simple letters
Tab FlyerPage layoutOne-off event flyers with fixed layout
Museum BrochurePage layoutTrip or open house brochures with set columns
Business cardPage layoutContact cards where text sits in text boxes

Choose word processing when other people will edit the file. Text reflows when a colleague adds a paragraph, and the page stays tidy. Choose page layout when the design matters more than the text, such as a one-page trip flyer. Editing a page layout file means moving boxes. A colleague who did not build the flyer may struggle with that.

Mail merge for letters home and class lists

Pages for Mac includes mail merge. Apple's user guide has a section called Use mail merge. It covers merge fields, sender information, source files and populating customized documents. The idea is simple. You write one letter with placeholders. Pages fills each placeholder from a row in your list, and each row becomes one finished letter.

Start with a clean spreadsheet. Put one student on each row, and put the field names in the first row. Use short, plain headers such as FirstName and GuardianName. Remove merged cells and blank rows, because a blank row creates an empty letter. Then write the letter once, and check a few students by hand before you print the batch.

Here is a worked example. Your fields are FirstName, GuardianName and ClassName. The letter opens with Dear, then the guardian field, then a line that names the class. Preview the letter for one student and read it aloud. Check that the name is spelled the way the family spells it. Only then merge the full list. Ask Lazur to walk you through the merge if the steps feel unfamiliar.

  1. Write the letter once in a Pages document, with the merge fields in place.
  2. Open the Use mail merge section of the Pages User Guide, and follow the source file steps.
  3. Choose your spreadsheet as the source, then match each field to the right column.
  4. Preview a student with a long name, a student with an accent, and a student with no guardian listed.
  5. Print or export only after the preview looks right.

Watch for three common faults. Names with accents sometimes come through strangely from a spreadsheet export. Missing guardian fields leave gaps in the letter. A blank row at the bottom of the list makes a letter with only the letterhead. Fix the source file before you touch the letter.

Track Changes and comments for student feedback

Turn on Track Changes with Edit > Track Changes. If the review toolbar is showing, you can click Track Changes there instead. Your edits then appear as marks in the document. Comments appear in the margin. To read the full list, click the View menu button in the toolbar. It opens the Comments & Changes sidebar.

Feedback works best in two passes. First, leave comments that point to a specific sentence and ask a question. Second, fix small errors with Track Changes on, so the student sees each correction. Explain what the marks mean on the first day. Most confusion starts with a mark nobody explained.

Keep the rubric in its own file. Then point to the row in a comment. The student can check the row against the draft, and you do not retype the standard every time.

Share a draft through Classwork and iCloud

Classwork lets teachers collaborate with students in Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Apple's Classwork description says the whole class can work on the same file for a group assignment. You can return work and ask a student to try again. That suits drafts that need a second pass, and it keeps the feedback in one place.

iCloud sharing has a catch. If you share a Pages file on iCloud with Track Changes on, only people using Pages on a Mac, iPhone or iPad can edit it. Pages for iCloud users can only view. Creator Studio subscribers also get iCloud collaboration on files up to 4GB, per MacRumors. Check how a family will open the file before you send it.

Word files in and out: what survives the trip

Many schools still send Word files. Pages can open them, and it can export back to Word. Apple's compatibility chart tells you what comes through. Changes to body text keep tracking when a Microsoft Office file imports. Other changes are accepted on import. Some features do not come across at all, and the file may look different on the other side.

Test with a real file before a colleague depends on it. Export a page to Word, open it on a school computer, and check the headers, footers and tracked edits. Keep the Pages original too. The Word export is a copy, not a replacement.

Mistakes teachers make in Pages

  • Choosing a page layout flyer, then asking a colleague to edit the text. The text sits in boxes, so each edit can move the layout.
  • Filtering Track Changes by your own name, then wondering why your edits vanished from the sidebar. They are still in the document.
  • Sharing a Track Changes file on iCloud with a family that uses Pages for iCloud. That person can only view the file.
  • Following a guide written for Pages 15.4 on an older copy. Pages 14.5 no longer gets new features, so menus may not match.
  • Trusting a Word export to keep the theme, watermark or page borders. Apple's compatibility chart says those are not supported.
  • Clicking a premium template by mistake in the Template Chooser, then seeing a Creator Studio prompt.
  • Merging from a spreadsheet with blank rows, then printing the whole batch before checking a single letter.

Check your Pages version before you follow a guide

Open Pages > About Pages to see your version. Apple's user guide covers Pages 15.4 for Mac. Menus and toolbars differ between 15.x and 14.5, according to TidBITS. Some readers also found that copy and paste between 14.5 and 15.1 documents failed. Pages needs macOS 26 or later, according to Apple's October 2026 announcement.

Two changes are on the way. Apple's September 2026 post says Pages for Mac adds Screen View, which optimizes content for reading and focused writing. No release date was given. Apple's October 2026 post says an AI assistant in beta needs macOS 27 and works in U.S. English only. Apple says updates arrive on the App Store this November.

Where Lazur fits while you work in Pages

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. It is not a plugin or add-in for Pages. It does not click buttons, edit files or operate Pages for you. Use it to find things, learn steps and speak your text. Hold ⌥⌘ to ask about anything on screen, and Lazur answers out loud.

Ask where something is, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to do something, and Lazur guides you one click at a time. It waits for each click. You stay in control of the document the whole time. That suits a teacher who knows the job but forgets the menu path.

Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models. Check your school's data rules before you show student records on screen.

Dictate comments and drafts at the cursor

Hold fn to dictate clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app. In Pages, that means a comment, a newsletter paragraph or a note to a parent. Lazur also keeps snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots. Snippets help with repeated feedback. The dictionary helps with student names, local place names and school terms.

Dictation is included with Lazur, and it is unlimited on both plans. Dictate the first draft, then read it aloud once. Reading a draft aloud often shows the clumsy sentences. Fix those by hand, then save.

What to do next with Pages for teachers

Start with one job. Rebuild a handout you already made, using a word-processing template. Then run one mail merge with a short list. Export the file to Word and open it on a school computer. If your school also uses Google Docs, read the Google Docs page for teachers on Mac. For slides, see Keynote for teachers on Mac. For more Pages help, see Lazur for Pages. Questions people ask

Is Pages for Mac free for teachers?

Pages stays free. Premium templates, Content Hub images and AI features need Apple Creator Studio. Apple lists $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year for college students and educators, after a one-month free trial. Check Apple's student page to see whether you qualify.

Do I need Creator Studio for mail merge or Track Changes?

This guide does not claim either feature is locked. Apple's user guide lists mail merge and track changes as Pages features. Check About Pages and the feature list in your copy before you plan a class project.

Why are my Track Changes missing from the sidebar?

The most common cause is an author filter. If you filter changes by author and hide yourself, your edits still appear in the document but not in the sidebar. Change the filter or click Show All.

Can students edit a Pages file I share on iCloud?

Only people using Pages on a Mac, iPhone or iPad can edit a shared file when change tracking is on. Pages for iCloud users can only view. Test the setup with one student before a whole class uses it.

Will a Word file look the same in Pages?

Not always. Body-text changes keep tracking on import, but themes, watermarks, page borders and macros are not supported. File hyperlinks are removed. Check Apple's compatibility chart and open the result before you rely on it.

Can Lazur click buttons or type in Pages for me?

No. Lazur does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. It points at things, guides you one click at a time, answers out loud and dictates text at your cursor.

Does Lazur keep my screen or my students' work?

Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models. Check your school's data rules first.
