How to accept or reject suggestions in Google Docs on Mac: one edit or all
To accept one suggestion in Google Docs on Mac, click the suggestion or its comment, then click the check mark to accept or the X to reject it. To handle every suggestion at once, go to Tools > Review suggested edits, then click Accept all or Reject all.

Quick answer
- One suggestion: click it or its comment, then click the check mark to accept or the X to reject.
- Every suggestion: go to Tools > Review suggested edits, preview with the Down arrow, then click Accept all or Reject all.
- Shortcut for the review box: hold Ctrl+⌘, press O, then press U. Google lists no shortcut for accepting one suggestion.
- Accept all includes suggestions you have not scrolled to, so preview first.
- Accepting needs edit access. With comment-only access, Accept all is greyed out or missing.
What you need
- Edit access to the document. Comment-only access cannot accept suggestions.
- A Mac with a web browser. Google Docs runs in the browser, with no separate Mac app.
- Chrome or Edge only if you need offline editing.
How to Accept or reject suggestions in Google Docs in Google Docs on a Mac
Open the document and find the suggestion
Open the file at docs.google.com in your browser, signed in to an account with edit access. Suggested changes show up in the text, and each one has a comment that shows who proposed it.
Tip: Google's help steps are the same on Mac and Windows. Only the keyboard chords differ.
Click the suggestion or its comment
Click the suggested text, or click its comment in the margin. The suggestion becomes active. Then look for the check mark and the X.
Tip: If you click the wrong suggestion, nothing changes. Click the next one.
Accept one suggestion with the check mark
Click the check mark. The proposed text becomes normal text in the document, and the suggestion goes away.
Tip: Google lists no keyboard shortcut for this step, so use the mouse or trackpad.
Reject one suggestion with the X
Click the X. The suggested change is removed, and the original text stays as it was.
Tip: Repeat the check mark or the X for each suggestion you want to handle one at a time.
Open Review suggested edits for every suggestion
Hold Ctrl⌘, press O, then U
To handle all suggestions at once, click Tools in the menu bar, then click Review suggested edits. A box opens at the top right of the page with Accept all and Reject all buttons.
Tip: This shortcut comes from Google's keyboard shortcut table. Hold Ctrl and Command together, press O, then press U.
Preview the result with the Down arrow
Click the Down arrow in the box. Google shows the document as it would look with every suggestion accepted or rejected. The document itself does not change until you click a button.
Tip: Use the preview to check a long document before you commit.
Click Accept all or Reject all
Click Accept all to keep every suggestion, or Reject all to remove every one. Both buttons act on the whole document at once, so click only after the preview looks right.
Tip: Accept all includes suggestions you have not scrolled to. Check the preview first.
Jump between suggestions with the keyboard
Hold Ctrl⌘, press N, then U
Hold Ctrl and Command, press N, then press U to move to the next suggestion. Press P instead of N to go back to the previous one.
Tip: Google's table lists these Mac chords. On Windows, the same chords use Ctrl+Alt.
Read the finished document once more
Read from the first line to the last. Look for text that still shows as a suggestion, and check that the wording matches what you meant.
Tip: Reading in Viewing mode keeps you from typing by accident. Viewing mode uses ⌘+Option+Shift+C.
Accept or reject one suggestion at a time
A suggestion is an edit that a commenter proposes instead of making directly. Anyone with edit access can accept it or reject it. Accepting keeps the proposed text. Rejecting keeps the original text.
Handling one suggestion takes two clicks. First click the suggestion or its comment. Then click the check mark to accept or the X to reject. Google's help page names the two buttons Accept and Reject.
Google does not list a keyboard shortcut for accepting or rejecting a single suggestion. Plan on the mouse or trackpad for that step. The keyboard helps with the review box and with moving between suggestions.
Accept all suggestions in Google Docs at once
Clicking through a long draft one suggestion at a time takes a while. The batch option covers the whole document in one place. Go to Tools > Review suggested edits and decide on everything from that box.
Third-party guides call this box a sidebar. Spell's guide says the sidebar lists every suggestion, with Accept all at the top. Google's own help describes a box at the top right. If your screen looks different from a guide, trust Google's description and look for that box.
Say a long draft came back from several reviewers, and one of them suggested a change to a quote you care about. Most edits look fine, but that quote needs a closer look. Start with Next suggestion to reach the quote. Click Accept or Reject on that one. Then open Review suggested edits, preview the rest, and click Accept all only if the preview looks right.
| Goal | Where it lives | Keyboard help |
|---|---|---|
| Accept one suggestion | Click the suggestion or its comment, then the check mark | None listed by Google |
| Reject one suggestion | Click the suggestion or its comment, then the X | None listed by Google |
| Accept or reject all | Tools > Review suggested edits, then Accept all or Reject all | Hold Ctrl+⌘, press O, then U |
| Move to next suggestion | Document, from the keyboard | Hold Ctrl+⌘, press N, then U |
Move between suggestions with the keyboard
The next and previous chords matter most in a long file, where clicking each highlight takes a while. Use them to read each suggestion before you decide. Press N to move forward and P to move back. The rest of the chord stays the same.

Suggesting, Editing and Viewing modes on Mac
Google Docs has three modes that matter here. Suggesting mode turns your typing into proposed edits. Editing mode lets you change the text directly. Viewing mode is read-only, which is useful when you only want to read the result.
On a Mac, the chords are ⌘+Option+Shift+X for Suggesting, ⌘+Option+Shift+Z for Editing, and ⌘+Option+Shift+C for Viewing. Check the mode before you start. Typing in Suggesting mode creates suggestions, not plain text.
Mistakes people make with suggestions on Mac
Most suggestion mistakes come from one of four habits. Each one is easy to avoid once you know it.
- Clicking Accept all before scrolling. Accept all includes suggestions you have not scrolled to, so preview with the Down arrow first.
- Typing in Suggesting mode. Your edits become suggestions instead of plain text. Switch to Editing mode first.
- Expecting Accept all with comment-only access. Accepting needs edit access, so the button can be missing or greyed out.
- Assuming the phone app matches the Mac. MergeDocs Pro says the Android and iPhone apps have no Accept all.
Fix most of these by checking your access and mode first. Then preview, and then decide. That order prevents most of the errors above.
Accept or reject suggestions in offline Google Docs
You can work offline in Google Docs on a Mac, with limits. Google's offline help says you need Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Private browsing does not work. You also need the Google Docs Offline Chrome extension.
Only one account per browser profile can have offline turned on. Turning offline on for one of Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Drive turns it on for the others. An administrator can also turn off offline sync, so ask your Workspace admin if the option is missing.
Large files can fail to sync. Google suggests reloading and retrying, clearing docs.google.com site data, and toggling Make available offline from the File menu. If the file is too large to sync, split it into smaller documents.

Mac and Windows: what changes and what stays the same
Google's help page for suggestions does not mention Mac at all, and its steps cover both systems. The main difference is the modifier. On a Mac, the review chords use Ctrl+⌘. On Windows, the same chords use Ctrl+Alt. Keep the clicks from any guide and swap the keys.
Where suggested edits came from
Google introduced suggested edits in June 2014, according to Wikipedia's Google Docs entry. That early version let commenters propose edits that the author could accept or reject. Wikipedia does not mention a later rename, so older guides may use different labels for the same controls.

Comments that stay open after you finish
Some comments may still be open after the suggestions are settled. Open a discussion thread with ⌘+Option+Shift+A, and jump between comments with Hold Ctrl+⌘, press N, then C. Insert a new comment with ⌘+Option+M when you need to ask a question instead of editing the text.

If it does not work
- Accept all is missing or greyed out
- You likely have comment-only access. Accepting needs edit access. Ask the document owner to give you edit access.
- Accept all changed things you had not read
- Accept all includes suggestions you have not scrolled to. Preview with the Down arrow before you click it, and read the whole document first.
- My typing shows up as suggestions
- You are in Suggesting mode. Switch to Editing mode with ⌘+Option+Shift+Z, then type again.
- Offline editing will not sync
- Use Chrome or Edge, not a private window. Reload and retry, clear docs.google.com site data, then toggle Make available offline from the File menu.
- A large file will not sync offline
- Google's offline help says to split the document if it is too large to sync. Move part of the text into a second file.
- The box on screen does not match a guide
- Some guides call it a sidebar. Google calls it a box at the top right. Look for the Accept all and Reject all buttons inside it.
