How to switch between sheet tabs in Google Sheets on Mac: shortcuts and clicks
On a Mac, click the sheet tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet, or press Option + Down Arrow for the next sheet and Option + Up Arrow for the previous one. Google's pages do not list a native Google Sheets app for Mac, so you do this in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox.

Quick answer
- Click a sheet tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet to open that sheet.
- Press Option + Down Arrow for the next sheet and Option + Up Arrow for the previous sheet.
- On a MacBook, Option + Right Arrow and Option + Left Arrow do the same job.
- Press Option + Shift + K to see a list of every sheet in the file.
- Leave Command out. Command + Option + arrows switch Chrome tabs, not sheets.
What you need
- A Mac running macOS
- Google Sheets open in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox
- A keyboard with Option and arrow keys
- Access to the spreadsheet in your Google account
How to Switch between sheet tabs in Google Sheets on Mac in Google Sheets on a Mac
Open your file in a browser
Open the spreadsheet in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox on your Mac. Google Sheets runs in the browser window, so there is no app to open first.
Find the sheet tabs
Look at the bottom edge of the spreadsheet. Each sheet has a tab with its name on it. The tab for the open sheet looks different from the rest.
Tip: If the tabs are cut off, zoom out with your browser's zoom controls so the bottom edge is in view.
Click the tab you want
Click the tab name once. Sheets opens that sheet. A tap on the trackpad does the same job if tap to click is on.
Move to the next or previous sheet
⌥↓ and⌥↑
Hold Option and press Down Arrow to go to the next sheet on the right. Hold Option and press Up Arrow to go back one sheet.
Tip: On a MacBook keyboard, Option + Right Arrow and Option + Left Arrow do the same job.
Open the list of every sheet
⌥⇧K
Hold Option and Shift, then press K. A list of every sheet in the file opens. Choose a name, and Sheets jumps to that sheet.
Tip: Some third-party guides describe an All sheets button at the bottom left. Google's page does not confirm that button, so check your screen.
Use the tab menu to rename or move a sheet
Right-click a sheet tab to open its menu. On a trackpad, right-click is a two-finger click, or Control + click. Use the menu to rename the sheet or move it in the order.
Tip: Third-party guides list these items. Google's help page does not show this menu, so the labels may differ on your screen.
Google's product pages and help center do not list a native Google Sheets app for Mac. That means you switch sheets inside a browser window. The sheet tabs sit along the bottom of the spreadsheet. This guide covers the mouse, the keyboard, and the full sheet list. It also covers the mistakes that stop the keys from working.
Why there is no Google Sheets app for Mac
Google Sheets runs in the browser. Google's Sheets product page describes it as something you use from a phone, tablet, or desktop. It does not mention a Mac app. The Wikipedia article lists the web app in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, so your browser is the app.
If you search the App Store, you will see Google Sheets for iPhone and iPad. The App Store listing for Google Sheets that we checked covers iPhone and iPad only. Skip it on your Mac. Every step in this guide happens in a browser tab.

Switch sheets with the mouse or trackpad
The fastest way is still the simplest. Look at the bottom edge of the spreadsheet. Each sheet has a tab with its name on it. Click a tab once, and Sheets shows that sheet. The open sheet's tab looks different from the others, so you always know where you are.
A tap on a trackpad does the same job as a click, if tap to click is turned on. If the tab you want is off screen, use the sheet list instead of scrolling the tab bar. The list is faster when a file has many sheets.
Switch with Option and the arrow keys
Hold Option and press Down Arrow to move to the next sheet. Hold Option and press Up Arrow to move to the previous one. Google's keyboard shortcut page lists these as the Mac keys for moving between sheets, so they are the ones to learn first.
On a MacBook, Google also lists Option + Right Arrow for the next sheet and Option + Left Arrow for the previous sheet. Pick the pair that feels natural. Both pairs come from the same Google page.
Apple's rule applies here. You press and hold the modifier keys, such as Option, and then press the last key. Apple also says every app can have its own shortcuts. Some shortcuts that work in one app might not work in another. Test the keys in Sheets before you rely on them in a meeting.
How tab order affects the arrow keys
Sheets reads tabs from left to right. Option + Down Arrow moves toward the tab on the right, and Option + Up Arrow moves toward the tab on the left. Your tab order therefore decides what the arrow keys do next. If you move a tab, the arrow keys follow the new order. Check the order after you move tabs, so you do not lose track of the next sheet.
Open the full list when there are many sheets
Press Option + Shift + K to open a list of every sheet in the file. Choose a name, and Sheets jumps to that sheet. Use the list when the tab bar cannot show all your tabs, or when the sheet you want sits far to the right. Windows uses Alt + Shift + K for the same list.
Google's Drive limits page does not state a maximum number of sheets per file. So there is no published tab cap to plan around. The limit that matters for big files is size, which is covered in the growing files section below.
| Move | Mac keys | Windows keys |
|---|---|---|
| Next sheet | ⌥ + ↓ | Alt + Down Arrow |
| Previous sheet | ⌥ + ↑ | Alt + Up Arrow |
| Next sheet, MacBook alternate | ⌥ + → | Not listed on Google's page |
| Previous sheet, MacBook alternate | ⌥ + ← | Not listed on Google's page |
| List of all sheets | ⌥ + ⇧ + K | Alt + Shift + K |
Keep Command out of the arrow keys
The most common mistake is adding Command. In Chrome on a Mac, Command + Option + Right Arrow moves to the next browser tab. Command + Option + Left Arrow moves to the previous browser tab. If you press those while a sheet is open, Chrome changes tabs, and your spreadsheet stays where it was.
The rule is simple. For sheets, use Option with an arrow key and nothing else. For browser tabs in Chrome, use Command and Option with an arrow key. The two combinations do different jobs, and mixing them up sends you to the wrong window.
Fix arrow keys that scroll instead of switching
Sometimes Option + arrow scrolls the page or moves the cursor between cells. That usually means the focus sits somewhere other than the sheet. Click a cell in the sheet first. Then try the shortcut again. If it still fails, the troubleshooting checks cover the other common causes.
A third-party guide says a Scroll Lock key on an external keyboard, or a browser extension, can change how arrow keys behave. Google's own pages do not confirm this. Treat both as suspects, not proven causes, and test one at a time.

A worked example in a monthly budget file
Say the file has a summary tab at the start, then one tab for each month. You are on the summary and want the newest month. Click the summary tab, then press Option + Down Arrow until the newest month shows. If you lose your place, press Option + Shift + K and pick the month by name.
Now you want to compare two months side by side. Open the first month, copy the cells you need, then press Option + Down Arrow to reach the second month. Paste there. Press Option + Up Arrow to return. The arrow keys keep your place in the order, so you never hunt for names.
Work faster when a file keeps growing
Once you can switch, the next problem is finding the right sheet fast. Give tabs short, clear names. Keep the summary sheet at the start of the file. From there, Option + Down Arrow walks you through the rest in order.
20 million
cells per spreadsheet, or up to 100MB, for files created in or converted to Google Sheets
Google Drive storage and file limitsWhen a file approaches that limit, split older months into a separate file. Plan the split before the file gets large. Google's limits page does not describe how Sheets behaves near the limit, so do not rely on a warning to tell you it is time.
Windows keys and compact keyboards
If you also use a Windows PC, the moves use Alt in place of Option. Alt + Down Arrow goes to the next sheet, and Alt + Up Arrow goes to the previous one. Alt + Shift + K opens the list. Keep both sets in mind if you switch between machines.
On a compact Mac keyboard, the top row can send special functions instead of F-keys. Apple says the Fn or Globe key activates those top-row functions. The arrow keys are not in the top row, so this rarely affects sheet switching. If an arrow does nothing, test it in a notes app first.
Mistakes people make
- Adding Command to the arrow keys, which switches browser tabs instead of sheets.
- Using Alt on a Mac, where the Windows habit has no effect. Use Option.
- Expecting a shortcut from another app to work in Sheets. Apple says shortcuts vary by app.
- Searching for a Mac app to install. Google's pages do not list one, so the browser is the app.
- Forgetting that the arrow keys follow tab order. Check the order after you move a tab.
Practice the moves once
Try this drill once. Open a file with a few sheets. Click the second tab. Press Option + Down Arrow, then Option + Up Arrow, and watch the highlighted tab move. Last, press Option + Shift + K and choose the last sheet from the list. A little practice beats hunting for tabs all day.

Where to go next
Once switching feels natural, the next gain comes from how your file is laid out, not from more keys. If you clean data and build pivots on a Mac, the Google Sheets guide for data analysts covers that work step by step. For a quick reference, bookmark Google's keyboard shortcut page and check it after a major update.
Google Sheets shortcuts for this on Mac
| To do this | Press |
|---|---|
| Next sheet | ⌥↓ |
| Previous sheet | ⌥↑ |
| Next sheet, MacBook alternate | ⌥→ |
| Previous sheet, MacBook alternate | ⌥← |
| List of all sheets | ⌥⇧K |
| Chrome next browser tab (not for sheets) | ⌘⌥→ |
| Chrome previous browser tab (not for sheets) | ⌘⌥← |
If it does not work
- Option + arrow scrolls the page instead of switching sheets.
- Click a cell in the sheet first, then press the shortcut again. If it still scrolls, check for a Scroll Lock key on an external keyboard and test in an Incognito window to rule out an extension. A third-party guide suggests these fixes. Google's pages do not confirm them.
- Option + arrow switches Chrome tabs instead of sheets.
- Command is pressed too. Release Command and use Option alone for sheets. Command + Option + arrows are Chrome's browser tab shortcuts.
- The sheet tab bar is cut off or too small to read.
- Zoom out with your browser's zoom controls. Or press Option + Shift + K and pick the sheet by name.
- Keys do nothing on a compact Mac keyboard.
- Apple says the Fn or Globe key activates top-row special functions. Arrow keys are not top-row keys, so test them in a text box or notes app first. If they still fail, check the keyboard in another app.
- A Windows shortcut does nothing on the Mac.
- Use Option where Windows uses Alt. Alt + Down Arrow becomes Option + Down Arrow, and Alt + Shift + K becomes Option + Shift + K.

Questions people ask
Is there a Google Sheets app for Mac?
Not that we could find on Google's pages. Google's Sheets product page does not mention a Mac app, and the App Store listing for Google Sheets covers iPhone and iPad only. Use Sheets in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox on your Mac.
What is the Mac shortcut to switch sheets?
Press Option + Down Arrow for the next sheet and Option + Up Arrow for the previous sheet. Google's shortcut page also lists Option + Right Arrow and Option + Left Arrow as the MacBook alternates.
How do I see all sheets in a file on a Mac?
Press Option + Shift + K. Sheets shows a list of every sheet in the file, and choosing a name jumps to that sheet.
Why does Option + arrow switch my browser tabs?
You probably pressed Command as well. In Chrome on a Mac, Command + Option + Left Arrow and Command + Option + Right Arrow move between browser tabs. Remove Command and use Option alone.
Why do my arrow keys scroll instead of switching sheets?
Click a cell in the sheet first so Sheets has focus, then try again. A third-party guide also points to Scroll Lock on external keyboards and to browser extensions, but Google's pages do not confirm those causes.
Does Google Sheets have a maximum number of sheets?
Google's Drive limits page does not state a maximum number of sheets per file. It does state that a spreadsheet can hold up to 20 million cells or 100MB.
Does the Windows shortcut work on a Mac?
Not with Alt. Use Option where Windows uses Alt. Google's page lists Alt + Down Arrow and Alt + Up Arrow for Windows, and Option + Down Arrow and Option + Up Arrow for Mac.
Do the shortcuts change if I use Safari?
Google's page lists these keys for Sheets, not for one browser. Apple says shortcuts can vary by app. If a key does nothing in Safari, test it there and check Safari's own shortcut list.
