Excel help for accountants Mac: getting unstuck in Excel 16.114 for Microsoft 365
Excel help for accountants on Mac comes down to two things: finding the control you need, and fixing data without starting over. Below you will see where accounting time goes, what a realistic day looks like, and step-by-step fixes for Excel for Mac 16.114. The steps work in Microsoft 365 and in the Office versions Microsoft still supports.

Quick answer
- Admin around client work eats a real share of the week, according to two surveys.
- Lazur sees your screen while you hold ⌥ ⌘, points at the control you need and guides you step by step.
- Lazur does not click for you, edit your files or run other apps. It is not an Excel add-in.
- Check your firm's rules on client data before you ask about any workbook that holds client details.
- Excel, Outlook and Word for Mac are all at version 16.114.3 in Microsoft's October 27, 2026 release notes.

Where an accountant's Mac day really goes
Most lost time sits around the real work, not inside it. Meetings create follow-up paperwork. Email creates tasks nobody writes down. Bank and practice exports arrive as spreadsheets that need cleaning before anyone can use them. Each job looks small. Together they fill the week.

A Vinyl survey of 259 accounting firms puts a number on the meeting part. Respondents lose an average of 3.8 hours a week to meeting admin. Vinyl's article converts that to about 182 hours, or 23 working days, a year. Vinyl is a vendor, and its page gives no survey date, sampling method or margin of error. Treat the figure as a signal, not a precise measure.

Accountants and Auditors: Occupational Outlook HandbookWhere the trouble starts: notes, follow-ups and inboxes
The same survey breaks the pain down further. Most answers point at three things: capturing notes, tracking follow-ups and inbox volume. Those three share one trait. They are mostly about writing and finding steps, which is where a voice helper can save you time.
| Problem | Share of accountants |
|---|---|
| Capturing notes and action items | 60% struggle most with this |
| Tracking follow-ups or turning email threads into tasks | 34% cannot track follow-ups or turn threads into clear tasks |
| Overwhelming inbox volume | 25% struggle with it |
| Finding information across scattered systems | 12% cannot find information easily |
| Tooling fragmentation as the biggest headache | 8% |
Alkmist cites a different figure from the 2023 Accounting Practice Management Survey. It says 39% of accountants spend over half their day on manual tasks. Alkmist is a blog, and the original report was not checked for this page. Read that number as a secondhand citation, next to the Vinyl data rather than in place of it.
What the jobs data says about the work
The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 1,595,200 accountant and auditor jobs in 2025. It projects 5% growth from 2025 to 2035, about 79,400 jobs. The May 2025 median pay was $83,680 a year. The Handbook says accountants prepare and examine financial records. It also notes that AI and robotic process automation are in use.
Five percent growth sounds modest. It still means more people learning the same spreadsheets and inbox habits. A shared method for meeting notes or bank exports helps a whole team, not just the person who wrote it first.
Excel help for accountants Mac: three fixes that save the most time
Finding a control you cannot see
Ribbons and menus shift between versions, so a guide from last year may not match your screen. Start with the menu bar and the ribbon. In Excel for Mac, Data > Remove Duplicates sits on the Data tab. Insert > PivotTable opens the pivot dialog. If you cannot see a control, hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask where it is. Lazur circles the control and labels it. You still press the button yourself.
Cleaning a bank export without losing the original
Bank exports are where most accountants meet duplicate rows. Before you touch anything, save a copy with File > Save As. Select the range, then open Data > Remove Duplicates. Check only the columns that define a real duplicate, such as date, amount and reference. Checking every column misses near-duplicates, like a reference with a trailing space. Checking too few deletes real repeats, like two equal payments on the same day.
Edge cases matter. Two rows with the same amount and date can be two real payments. Sort by reference before you delete anything. Copy the rows you plan to remove to a separate sheet first, so a reviewer can see what changed and why.
If something goes wrong, press ⌘ Z to undo. Undo works within the same session. It is not a backup. Keep the saved copy until the reconciliation is signed off.
Explaining a formula you inherited
Inherited formulas are the second common problem. The author understood them. Nobody else always does. Click the cell, let the formula show in the formula bar, and hold ⌥ ⌘ to ask what it does. Lazur reads the formula on screen and explains each argument out loud. Ask a follow-up about any argument you still do not follow.
Be careful what sits on screen. A sheet with client names, account numbers or tax IDs is client data. When you hold ⌥ ⌘, Lazur sends the audio and a screenshot to AI providers to answer. Follow your firm's rules before you ask about that sheet, or hide the sensitive columns first.

A month-end example from start to finish
Start with the raw export. Save a copy in a folder you do not edit. Then duplicate the working sheet, so the raw data stays untouched. Run Remove Duplicates on the working copy, using the checks from earlier. Next, build a PivotTable for totals by account with Insert > PivotTable. Excel places it on a new worksheet by default.
If your dates come in as a daily list, grouping them by month is the step people get stuck on. Ask Lazur to walk you through it. It guides you one click at a time, so you learn the dialog instead of memorizing a sequence. That matters the next month, when the export changes slightly.
Then write the summary email. Hold fn and dictate the action items into an Outlook draft. Read each line back. Names and amounts are the first things to check.
Outlook and meeting notes: the other half of the day
Email is the other big drain. Outlook for Mac 16.114 lets you customize the left rail with supported Microsoft 365 apps. It also lets you pick third-party online meeting providers when you create events. Outlook for Mac 16.111 added the ability to edit a message held in the Outbox before it sends. That helps when you spot a wrong figure in time. Outlook for Mac 16.110 added PST import for moving older mail in.
Turning meeting notes into action items
The Vinyl survey found that capturing notes and action items is the hardest part for most respondents. Try this after a client call. Hold fn and dictate the action items as you talk through them. Dictation writes clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app. Dictate into an Outlook draft, a Word note or an Excel tracker.
Dictation is not perfect. Check names, figures and dates before you send. Lazur has a personal dictionary, so you can teach it your firm's terms once, as your firm's client data rules allow. Dictation is unlimited on both the Pro and Power plans.
Version checks before you follow any Excel steps
Menus depend on the version you have. Open Microsoft Excel > About Excel to see yours. Microsoft's release notes list Excel, Outlook and Word for Mac at 16.114.3 (Build 26102720), released October 27, 2026. That update lists quality and performance improvements only. Excel for Mac 16.113, released September 16, 2026, added Copilot skills for charts and PivotTables.
| App | Version | Release date |
|---|---|---|
| Excel, Outlook and Word for Mac | 16.114.3 (Build 26102720) | October 27, 2026 |
| Outlook for Mac | 16.114 | October 14, 2026 |
| Excel for Mac | 16.113 | September 16, 2026 |
| Office 2019 for Mac | End of support | October 10, 2023 |
Some Excel for Mac features need a Microsoft 365 subscription. If your firm runs an older Office, check which features you have before you follow a guide. Office 2019 for Mac reached end of support on October 10, 2023. The release notes give no end-of-support dates for Office 2021 or Office 2024 for Mac, so ask your IT team.
Mistakes accountants make with Excel on Mac
- Working on the only copy. Save a copy with File > Save As before any bulk change.
- Using Windows shortcuts. Most Excel for Mac shortcuts use ⌘ where Windows uses Ctrl.
- Trusting a guide written for another version. Check Microsoft Excel > About Excel first.
- Removing duplicates on the wrong columns. Pick only the columns that define a real duplicate.
- Pasting client data into any AI tool without checking your firm's policy first.
- Dictating names and figures without reading them back before you send.
What Lazur does, and what it does not do
Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac, and it lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘ to ask about anything on screen. Lazur answers out loud. Ask where something is and it draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to do something and it guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click.
Lazur does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. It is not a plugin or add-in for Excel, Outlook or any other app. No app maker has partnered with Lazur. You make every change yourself, so you can explain it later.
Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models. Those are Lazur's rules, not your firm's. Check your firm's policy before you use it on client files.
Pricing, download and where to start
Lazur has a 3-day Pro trial with no credit card. The trial starts when you first open the app. Pro costs $18 a month, or $15 a month billed annually, and includes 150 AI actions. Power costs $120 a month, or $96 a month billed annually, and includes 1,000 AI actions. Dictation is unlimited on both. See the pricing page for current terms.
Lazur runs on macOS, on Apple silicon and Intel. Windows is planned, not available. You can get the app from the download page.

Next steps for your week
Start with one workflow this week. Pick the one that eats the most time. For many accountants that is meeting notes or bank exports. Time it once, then compare the following week. The Vinyl figure of 3.8 hours a week is a fair baseline, even though it comes from one vendor's survey.
If pivot tables are your problem, read how to make a pivot table in Excel on Mac. For help with formulas and buttons, see the Excel page. Outlook workflows are on the Outlook page.

Questions people ask
Can Lazur help with Excel for Mac without clicking for me?
Yes. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask where a control is or how to do a task. Lazur draws a circle and a label around the control, or guides you one click at a time. It waits for each click. It does not click buttons, edit files or operate Excel for you.
Which Excel version should I check first?
Open Microsoft Excel > About Excel. Microsoft's release notes list Excel, Outlook and Word for Mac at 16.114.3 (Build 26102720), released October 27, 2026. If your version is older, a newer guide may not match your screen. Some Excel for Mac features also need a Microsoft 365 subscription.
Can I use Lazur on a workbook with client names and account numbers?
Check your firm's rules first. When you hold ⌥ ⌘, Lazur sends the audio and a screenshot to AI providers to answer. Lazur says they are not stored and never used to train AI models. This page makes no compliance claim, so your firm's policy decides what you can share.
Is Lazur an Excel add-in?
No. Lazur is not a plugin or add-in for Excel, Outlook or any other app. It is a voice assistant for the Mac that sees your screen while you hold the shortcut. No app maker has partnered with Lazur.
How do I try Lazur for free?
Lazur has a 3-day Pro trial with no credit card. The trial starts when you first open the app. After the trial, Pro costs $18 a month, or $15 a month billed annually. Check the pricing page for current terms.
Does Lazur work on Windows?
Not yet. Lazur runs on macOS, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Windows is planned, not available.
Should I still learn Excel myself?
Yes. Lazur explains and points, but you make every change. Accountants who understand a formula can check a result. Ask Lazur to learn the steps faster, not to skip them.
Why do the shortcuts in my Windows guide not work on my Mac?
Mac keyboards use ⌘ (Command) where Windows uses Ctrl for most Excel shortcuts. A shortcut list written for Windows will mislead you on a Mac. Check the Mac version of the guide, or ask Lazur which key to hold.
