Why do I check Slack after hours at work? Causes, costs and fixes on Mac
You check Slack after hours because work sits within reach, and some messages look urgent. The habit usually comes from three things: work on your personal device, unclear expectations, and alerts that ask for a glance. You can change all three on your Mac tonight, without buying anything.
The short answer
- Over 80% of workers in Eurofound's 2023 survey regularly get work messages outside working hours.
- Stress and extra hours were higher where no right-to-disconnect policy existed. These are associations, not proof of cause.
- Work on personal devices and unclear expectations keep the habit going.
- Start tonight with a Focus for the end of your day, then agree on what counts as urgent.
What checking work messages after hours costs you
Stress that the survey data links to after-hours contact
In Eurofound's 2023 data, 38% of workers in companies without a right-to-disconnect policy reported stress or anxiety in the prior 12 months. The figure was 28% where a policy existed. These are survey associations, so they do not prove cause.
Extra hours you did not agree to work
Almost half of respondents regularly work more hours than contracted. Among workers contacted out of hours, 19% without a policy and 14% with one said they worked extra hours for that reason. Those minutes add up across a week.
Less separation between work and home
A 2025 daily diary study of 125 full-time MBA students linked reactive after-hours connectivity to more work-to-home conflict. It covered five weekdays and a narrow sample. The authors name those limits themselves.
Attention that stays with you in the evening
Checking costs attention even when you only glance and do not reply. The sources for this page do not measure that effect. Treat it as a cost you can notice in your own week, not as a number.
Money: no verified figure
This page does not give a dollar cost for after-hours checking. The sources checked do not put a verified price on it, so none is listed here.
Why it happens
Work and home share one device
Your work laptop and phone sit where you rest. The BLS American Time Use Survey 2025 found 35% of employed people did some or all of their work at home on days they worked. With Slack open at the kitchen table, the boundary is only a habit. Nothing physical separates the two.
A guess about what is expected
Eurofound found almost 9 in 10 workers contacted outside hours respond. Many people see that response rate and assume a reply is required. Your team may not expect it, but the habit tells you that someone might. Check the expectation directly instead of guessing.
Fear of missing a real emergency
Slack mixes urgent and routine messages in one place. A note from your manager looks the same as a joke in a busy channel. Without a named urgent channel, any message can feel like a fire. That uncertainty makes checking feel safe, even when it is not.
Alerts that ask for a glance
Banners and sounds ask for a look every time they appear. A glance often turns into a reply, and a reply turns into a thread. A Focus or Do Not Disturb schedule removes the pull, but only after you set it.
A policy that calms stress but not contact
Eurofound's report linked right-to-disconnect policies to less stress. The same report found they did not visibly change how often workers were contacted. A policy can make evenings feel better without making messages stop. You still need your own boundary.
A reactive habit
Reactive connectivity means you answer when messages come in. The 2025 MBA study found this reactive pattern was tied to more work-to-home conflict in its sample. The study compared proactive and reactive connectivity, so the difference matters. Its sample is small, so do not overread it.
How to fix it
These work with or without any app.
Set a Focus for the end of your workday
Open System Settings > Focus, pick a Focus, and add a schedule. Apple says a regularly used Focus can turn on and off automatically. If Focus is kept up to date across Apple devices, it can also follow you to your iPhone.
Turn on Slack Do Not Disturb hours
Check whether your workspace has admin default hours. Slack says these stop desktop and mobile notifications for members during set hours. If none exist, you can still set your own DND schedule or turn DND off.
Schedule replies for the morning
In Slack, click the arrow next to the paper plane icon to schedule a message, then check Drafts & sent. In Apple Mail, use Send Later and check the Send Later mailbox. Scheduling sets the send time. It does not change what people expect from you.
Name one urgent channel with your manager
Ask how people should reach you for a real emergency after hours. Pick a phone call, a text, or one named channel. Mute the rest in the evening. Write the answer down, so you can point to it later.
Check Slack at set times
Choose a morning check and an afternoon check. Add them to Calendar as short repeating events. Keep Slack closed between them. The urgent channel still reaches you, so the quiet time is safe to keep.
Move Slack off your first home screen
On your phone, put Slack on a later home screen page or in a folder. The app still works, but it is one less thing you see first at night. Keep it for check-in times.
Count one week before you change anything
Write down how many times you open Slack after hours across five workdays. Change one setting, then count again the next week. Your own count shows whether the change worked, which matters more than any survey average.
Use Lazur to find and walk through the settings
Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask Lazur where Focus lives. Lazur circles the control and labels it. Ask it to guide you one click at a time. It waits for each click, so you stay in control of every change.
Why do I check Slack after hours at work
Checking Slack at night is usually not laziness or carelessness. It happens because three things line up. Your phone is always within reach. The work channel might need you. And nobody has said clearly what is expected after the workday ends. Each part is small. Together they become a habit. Breaking the habit takes a few specific changes, not a stronger will.

- The phone sits on the nightstand, so Slack is one tap away.
- The work laptop stays open on the kitchen table after dinner.
- A message from a manager looks like it might be urgent.
- Nobody has said what is expected after hours, so you guess.
- A notification banner appears, and you glance at it before you decide not to.
How common is checking work messages after hours
This is common. Eurofound's 2023 report covered Belgium, France, Italy and Spain. It found over 80% of workers regularly get work communications outside working hours. Almost 9 in 10 of those contacted respond. Gallup's older survey asked about email instead. It found 59% of US workers check work email outside normal hours. That poll had 812 employed adults and a margin of error of plus or minus 4 points. Treat Gallup as a 2017 baseline, not today's number. Slack use may differ from email use, and no source here measures Slack alone.

BLS: American Time Use Survey 2025 ResultsWhat checking after hours costs you
The costs show up in stress and hours. In Eurofound's data, 38% of workers in companies without a right-to-disconnect policy reported stress or anxiety in the 12 months before the survey. In companies with a policy, the figure was 28%. Among workers contacted out of hours, 19% without a policy and 14% with one said they worked extra hours for that reason. These are associations from a survey. They do not prove that after-hours contact causes stress. The pattern is still worth taking seriously, especially if your evenings already feel tight.
Why the habit sticks
Work and home now share one screen. The BLS American Time Use Survey 2025 found that 35% of employed people did some or all of their work at home on days they worked. Full-time employed people worked an average of 8.1 hours on those days. When your laptop sits on the kitchen table, Slack sits next to dinner. A 2025 daily diary study tracked 125 full-time MBA students over five weekdays. It found that reactive after-hours connectivity, meaning answering when messages arrive, increased work-to-home conflict. The reported coefficient was 0.27 with p below 0.001. The sample was narrow, so treat it as a clue, not proof for every job.

| Trigger | What it looks like | First change to try |
|---|---|---|
| Phone on the nightstand | Slack opens before your alarm is switched off | Turn on a Focus that quiets Slack overnight |
| Work laptop at home | The Slack window stays open all evening | Quit Slack or close it when your shift ends |
| Fear of missing an urgent message | You check in case something is on fire | Agree on one urgent channel with your manager |
| Banners on the lock screen | A ping pulls you back every few minutes | Turn off Slack banners for the evening |
| Teammates in another time zone | A message arrives at night from another region | Plan to answer in the morning and say so |
Turn on a Focus for off hours on your Mac
- Click the Control Center icon in the menu bar, then find the Focus section.
- Click a Focus to turn it on. Click it again to turn it off.
- To set a schedule, open System Settings > Focus, pick your Focus, and add a schedule for the end of your workday.
- Choose how long it stays on, or pick Until the end of this event for a Calendar event.
- Open Slack and confirm the alerts stopped. Messages still wait in the app.
Focus silences alerts. It does not stop messages from arriving in Slack. The messages wait for you when you open the app. Apple says a Focus you use regularly can turn on and off by itself. If Focus is kept up to date across your Apple devices, turning it on for the Mac also turns it on for the others. Check that your iPhone shows the same Focus before you trust it at night.
Set Do Not Disturb hours in Slack
Slack has its own quiet hours. Workspace owners and admins can set default Do Not Disturb hours. During those hours, Slack does not send desktop or mobile notifications to members. If your admin sets them, you can still change your own hours, set a DND schedule or turn DND off. Some organizations use an organization-wide policy named Disable notifications during specific hours instead. That policy applies to every workspace in the organization. Ask your admin which setup your workspace has before you assume it is set.
Schedule replies for the morning
Writing and sending are separate actions in Slack. Type your reply, then click the arrow next to the paper plane icon to schedule it. Scheduled and draft messages are found under Drafts & sent. On your phone, tap and hold a message to edit, reschedule, send, cancel or delete it. Slack's help page does not state a maximum scheduling window, so do not plan around one.
Apple Mail works the same way. Click Send Later in the message window and pick a preset, such as Send 8:00 AM Tomorrow, or set your own date and time. The message waits in the Send Later mailbox in the sidebar. To change the time, double-click the message and click Edit. To stop it, select it and click Delete.
Outlook for Mac has Schedule send, but it needs an Exchange account. Microsoft says it works in Microsoft 365, Outlook 2019, Outlook 2021 and Outlook 2024 for Mac. It does not work with IMAP or POP accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo or iCloud. Microsoft says a scheduled message sends even when Outlook is closed. One university IT guide says Outlook must stay open. Send yourself a test message before you rely on it.
Agree on what counts as urgent
Much after-hours checking works like insurance. You look in case a message is urgent, and you rarely know. A short agreement removes the guessing. Ask your manager one question: if something truly needs me after hours, how should people reach me? Some teams name a phone call or a text for real emergencies. Write the answer down. Then you have something to point to at the end of a long day. Scheduling changes when a message goes out. It does not change what your team expects. The agreement does that.
Check Slack at set times instead of all evening
Pick two check-in times. A good default is first thing in the morning and once in the afternoon. Add them to Calendar as short repeating events, so they show up on your schedule. Between check-ins, keep Slack closed or quit the app. Urgent items still reach you through the channel you agreed on. The quiet time has a purpose, so you do not need to decide every few minutes whether to look.
Mistakes people make with after-hours settings
- Turning Focus on, then leaving the Slack window open. The alert stops, but the window still pulls you in.
- Muting everything, then missing the one message that matters. Name one urgent channel and tell people about it.
- Typing replies at night and sending them at night. Set the send time for the morning, or let the draft wait.
- Changing five settings in one evening. Change one setting per week, so you know which one helped.
- Ignoring on-call duty. If your job includes on-call shifts, get the expectation in writing.
Where Lazur helps, and where it does not
Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac. It lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘ to ask about anything on screen, and Lazur answers out loud. When you ask where something is, Lazur draws a circle and a label around it. For this problem, you can ask where Focus lives in Control Center and see it on your screen. When you ask how to do something, Lazur guides you one click at a time and waits for each click.
Lazur does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. It does not turn Focus on, mute Slack or set your schedule. You make those changes yourself. Lazur shows you the way. Hold fn to dictate a short reply at the cursor when you want to answer in your own words. Ask Lazur for a reminder by voice, so your check-in time lives in Apple Reminders.
Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers so Lazur can answer. They are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models. Memory of what you asked and did stays on the Mac. If a Slack thread holds private information, check your employer rules before you ask Lazur about it.
Edge cases for on-call and global teams
Some jobs make quiet hours hard. On-call engineers, support staff and people with teammates on another continent may get real after-hours work. For those roles, a Focus that allows exceptions can be more useful than full silence. Write down which alerts count as on-call, and allow only those through. A time zone gap is different. If a teammate posts late at night, answer in the morning and say so in your reply, so the sender knows when to expect you.
What to do next
Pick one change for tonight. Turn on a Focus for the end of your workday, then close the Slack window. Tomorrow, schedule one reply for the morning. Next week, ask your manager the urgency question. You do not need every fix at once. The goal is fewer checks that you never decided to make.

Questions people ask
Why do I check Slack after hours even when nothing is urgent?
The check is often a guess about risk. Slack puts urgent and routine messages in the same place, so every ping can look possible. A 2025 study of MBA students linked reactive connectivity to more work-to-home conflict. An agreed urgent channel removes most of the guessing.
Is it normal to check work messages at night?
It is common. Eurofound found over 80% of workers in four EU countries regularly get work communications outside hours. Gallup found 59% of US workers checked work email outside normal hours in 2017. Common does not mean harmless. The cost depends on how much it cuts into your rest.
Does Focus stop Slack messages from arriving?
No. Focus silences alerts. Messages still arrive in Slack and wait until you open the app. The benefit is that sounds and banners stop pulling your attention while the Focus is on.
Will scheduling my replies stop people from expecting answers at night?
Not by itself. Scheduling changes when your message is sent. It does not change what your team expects. A clear agreement about urgent contact does that job better than a timer.
Does a right-to-disconnect policy fix the problem?
It helps with stress, but not with contact. Eurofound's 2023 report linked a policy to less stress. It did not visibly change how often workers were contacted. You still need your own boundary, even where a policy exists.
Can Lazur turn on Focus or mute Slack for me?
No. Lazur does not click buttons or operate other apps for you. It can point to the Focus control, circle it, and guide you one click at a time. You make each change yourself.
What if my job includes on-call shifts?
Write down which alerts count as on-call, and allow only those through. Ask your manager to confirm the expectation in writing. Quiet hours work best when the rules are explicit and shared.
How much does after-hours checking cost in money?
This page does not give a dollar figure. The sources checked for it do not give a verified cost, so none is listed. The measurable costs here are stress and extra hours in survey data.
