How to create a channel in Slack on Mac: steps, public vs private and fixes

To create a channel in Slack on Mac, click the plus (+) sign in the sidebar, choose Channel, enter a name, pick Public or Private, and click Create. If you do not see that option, a Workspace Owner has likely restricted channel creation, so ask them to change the permission.

Quick answer

  • Click the plus (+) sign in the Slack sidebar, then choose Channel.
  • Enter a name, choose Public or Private, and click Create.
  • On a paid plan you can start from a blank channel or a template.
  • No keyboard shortcut creates a channel, so the sidebar is the fastest route.
  • If the option is missing, a Workspace Owner has probably restricted channel creation.

What you need

  • Slack desktop app for Mac, signed in to your workspace
  • Permission to create channels, or a Workspace Owner to ask

How to Create a channel in Slack on Mac in Slack on a Mac

  1. Check that the channel does not exist yet

    ⌘⇧ L

Open Browse channels with ⌘ ⇧ L before you build a new one. This shortcut works in the Slack desktop app only. Search for a few keywords first.

Tip: Two channels with the same job split the conversation and confuse new members.

  2. Click the plus sign in the sidebar

    SidebarPlus (+) sign

Make sure the sidebar is showing in the Slack window. Click the plus (+) sign in the sidebar. Slack's help article starts channel creation here on desktop.

Tip: Some guides label this path Channels > Create > Create channel. Look for the word Create on your screen.

  3. Select Channel

    Plus (+) signChannel

From the menu, select Channel. This tells Slack you want a new channel rather than a direct message.

Tip: If Channel is missing, your workspace may limit the menu. See the permission section above.

  4. Type a channel name

Enter a short name in the name field. Pick one that says what the channel is for, such as launch-planning. If Slack rejects the name, try another.

Tip: Short names with hyphens are easy to scan. Check your workspace habits first.

  5. Choose Public or Private

Pick Public if anyone in the workspace should find and join the channel. Pick Private if only invited people should see it. Use Private for hiring, budgets, or legal topics.

Tip: Ask who should find this channel in a search, not just who should read it.

  6. Pick Blank channel or a template

On a paid plan, Slack's help article says you can choose Blank channel or a template. A template gives the channel a starting setup for a common purpose. Free plans may show fewer choices.

Tip: If you only see templates, you may be on Free. Check the pricing page or ask your Workspace Owner.

  7. Click Create

Click Create to finish. The channel exists from that point on. You can now add people, post a message, or set a purpose.

Tip: Creating the channel is the last step in the dialog, so check the name before you click.

  8. Write a purpose and invite people

Open the channel details and write one line about what belongs there. Then invite the people who need it. A clear purpose helps new members decide what to post there.

Tip: Post a welcome message so the first members know the channel is active.

Before you start: check who can create channels

By default, members can create channels in Slack. Slack's Create a channel help article says so. Workspace Owners can change that rule, though. So the first question is whether your workspace allows it.

Look at the sidebar before you do anything else. If you see a plus sign you can use, you can probably create a channel. If there is no plus sign and no Create option, you likely lack permission. Ask a Workspace Owner. The help article gives that same advice.

Check your plan too. Channels are included on all four Slack plans, Free, Pro, Business+ and Enterprise+, according to Slack's pricing page. The plan does not block channel creation. It changes which setup choices you see.

Create a channel on Mac, step by step

The steps below follow Slack's desktop instructions. Keep the Slack window open beside this page. Match each label to your screen, and move on when the labels line up.

Public or private: how to decide who sees the channel

Public and private decide who can find the channel. A public channel is open to people in the workspace. Anyone can search for it and join. A private channel is invite only. People who are not invited cannot see it.

Use public for work the whole team should see. Think team updates, shared links, and onboarding. Use private for smaller groups, such as a hiring round or a pricing draft.

When you are unsure, ask who will look for the channel. If the answer is the whole team, choose Public. Guests need one extra check. Slack's article says Multi-Channel Guests can create private channels by default, so review who can do what before you assume a channel is locked down.

Blank channel or template on a paid plan

On a paid plan, the Create a channel dialog offers a choice. You can pick Blank channel or a template. Slack's help article describes both options for paid plans.

Use a template when a channel has a common shape, such as a project or an event. Use a blank channel when your name is clear and no template fits. Slack's pricing page says templates are user-created on Free, Pro and Business+, and admin-created on Enterprise+.

The sources disagree a little here. The help article ties blank channels to paid plans, but the pricing page does not mention blank channels at all. If you are on Free and see only templates, the pricing page matches what you see. Confirm your plan with a Workspace Owner.

Name the channel so people can find it

A good name says what the channel is for. Compare launch-planning with stuff or misc. The first one tells people where to post. The second one tells them nothing.

Use a prefix when a team has many channels for one purpose. A prefix such as client- or team- keeps related channels together in a list. This page could not confirm Slack's official naming rules, so check your workspace's habits first.

Keep the name steady after people start using it. People link to channels, bookmark them, and mention them in messages. A rename can leave those links confusing.

What to do if you cannot create a channel

When the option is missing, the cause is usually permission. Slack's article says to ask a Workspace Owner if you cannot create a channel. Only they can change the rule, so that is the fastest fix.

Before you ask, check three things. First, confirm you are in the workspace you meant. People in several workspaces often miss this. Second, confirm the sidebar is open. Third, note whether you need a public or private channel, because the two can be restricted separately.

Change who can create channels as an admin

If you are a Workspace Owner, you can change this yourself. Click the workspace name, then Tools & settings, then Workspace settings. Under Administration, select Manage permissions, then open Account Types.

You will see two rows, Create public channels and Create private channels. Click the three dots beside the one you want. Choose Edit permission, pick who can take the action, then click Save. Org-level settings override workspace settings, so check those too.

Try the slash command /create channel

Slack's shortcuts article lists /create channel under Create a new channel. Type it in a message box to start a channel without using the sidebar. The article notes that the command may be limited to owners and admins.

Use the command when you already know the name and want to skip the menus. If it does nothing for you, the sidebar is the safer route. The command reaches the same job, through a different door.

Match menu labels to your version

Guides online do not agree on labels. Zapier describes desktop steps as Channels > Create > Create channel. It then asks you to start from scratch or a template, enter a name, set visibility, and click Create. Slack's help article uses the plus sign and Channel instead.

Both paths lead to the same dialog. Slack's Mac release notes list 4.53.280, dated Nov 3, 2026, as the newest release this page could verify. The notes do not mention channel creation. If your labels differ, trust your screen.

Shortcuts that help, and the one that does not

No keyboard shortcut creates a channel. Slack's keyboard shortcuts page lists none for this job. You can still move faster with the shortcuts that exist.

  • ⌘ ⇧ L opens Browse channels. It works in the desktop app only.
  • ⌘ ⇧ K opens Browse DMs when you need a person, not a channel.
  • ⌥ ↑ and ⌥ ↓ move up and down the sidebar.
  • Ctrl 1 opens the Home view.
  • ⌘ ⇧ N creates a canvas, not a channel. Check the title before you click.

The canvas shortcut causes the most mix-ups. It sounds like creation, and it is, but the item it makes is a canvas. Read the title on screen before you press Enter.

After you create the channel

A new channel is only useful once people know it exists. Post a short message that says what belongs there and who should join. Pin the most important message if the channel needs a standing reference.

To find the channel again, read how to jump to a conversation in Slack on Mac. If the channel will be busy, read how to mute a channel in Slack on Mac. Muting only changes what you see.

For the first post, how to start a new message in Slack on Mac covers the steps one by one.

Common mistakes people make

  • Making a private channel for something the whole team needs. People then ask in other channels instead.
  • Naming a channel after a month or a project that has ended. The name stops matching the work.
  • Skipping the search. A second channel with the same job splits the conversation.
  • Looking for a creation shortcut. Slack's list has none, so the sidebar is the route.
  • Assuming Free has every option. Check what your screen shows before you plan around it.

If it does not work

The plus sign or Create option is missing
A Workspace Owner has likely restricted channel creation. Ask them to check Workspace settings > Administration > Manage permissions > Account Types. Confirm the sidebar is showing too.
Slack rejects the channel name
Try a different name with fewer special characters. Search with ⌘ ⇧ L first, because a channel with that name may already exist.
The /create channel command does nothing
The command may be limited to Workspace Owners and admins. Use the plus sign in the sidebar instead.
Only templates show, with no Blank channel
Blank channel is a paid-plan choice in Slack's help article. On Free, you may see templates only. Confirm with a Workspace Owner or check Slack's pricing page.
Your menu labels do not match this page
Guides use different labels, such as Channels > Create > Create channel. Follow the words on your screen, and check Slack's help center if the flow has changed.
Your Slack version seems out of date
Compare your version with Slack's Mac release notes. The newest entry this page could verify is 4.53.280, dated Nov 3, 2026. Update Slack if you are behind it.

Questions people ask

Is there a keyboard shortcut to create a channel in Slack on Mac?

Not one that Slack lists. Slack's keyboard shortcuts page has no shortcut for creating a channel. Browse channels with ⌘ ⇧ L checks for an existing one, and /create channel in a message box may work if your role allows it.

Why don't I see the plus sign or the Create option?

Your workspace probably limits channel creation. Members can create channels by default, but Workspace Owners can change that. Ask a Workspace Owner to check the permission settings.

Can I create a channel in the Slack web app or on mobile?

The Create a channel help article covers desktop and mobile only. On mobile, tap the plus sign on the Home tab, enter a name, tap Next, choose public or private, then tap Create. The article has no separate web section, so the desktop steps are the ones for Mac.

Do I need a paid plan to create a channel?

No. Slack's pricing page says channels are included on Free, Pro, Business+ and Enterprise+. A paid plan adds the blank channel and template choice that the help article describes.

Can a guest create a channel?

By default, Multi-Channel Guests can create private channels. Workspace Owners can change that. If you are a guest and cannot create one, ask a Workspace Owner.
