How to jump to unread message in Slack on Mac: latest unread, step by step
The fastest way to jump to unread message in Slack on Mac is to click into a conversation that has unreads and press ⌘ J. Slack moves focus to an unread message in that conversation, so you can start reading from there instead of scrolling back through the history.

Quick answer
- Click into a channel or direct message that is bold in the sidebar, then press ⌘ J.
- To see unreads across every channel and DM, press ⌘ ⇧ A or click Unreads under Home.
- Move between unread conversations with ⌥ ⇧ ↓ for next and ⌥ ⇧ ↑ for previous.
- If ⌘ J does nothing, the conversation may have no unreads, or you may be in the web app.
- To keep Unreads visible, go to your profile image, choose Preferences, open Home and tick Unreads.
What you need
- Slack desktop app for Mac, signed in to your workspace
- At least one channel or direct message with unread messages
- Access to Preferences in the Slack desktop app if you want to pin Unreads
How to Jump to the latest unread message in Slack on Mac in Slack on a Mac
Find a conversation with unreads
In the sidebar under Home, look for channels or direct messages shown in bold. Slack's send and read article says bold names mean there are unread messages. Pick the one you need to read now.
Click into the conversation
Click the channel or DM name to open it. The message list appears. Keep the conversation active, because the shortcut works from inside it. Click the message list once so focus sits there.
Press ⌘ J to jump to the unread messages
⌘ J
Slack moves focus to an unread message in the conversation. Slack's two help articles describe this key differently, so check which message you land on.
Tip: If nothing happens, the conversation probably has no unread messages to jump to.
Open the Unreads view for everything else
⌘⇧ A
Use this when you want unreads from every channel and DM in one list. The Unreads view lists unread conversations across your workspace.
Move through the Unreads list
F6, then ↑ / ↓
Press F6 to move focus to the message list. Then use the up and down arrows to move between messages. Press left or right to expand or collapse a group.
Jump between unread channels
⌥⇧ ↓
Option Shift Down Arrow moves to the next unread channel or DM. Option Shift Up Arrow goes back to the previous one.
Mark a group as read
Esc
Press Esc to mark the current group or conversation read. Use Shift Esc only when you want to clear every unread, because it applies to everything.
Tip: Shift Esc marks all messages read, so check before you press it.
Pin Unreads in the sidebar
Open Preferences, go to the Home tab, and under Always show in the sidebar, tick Unreads. Stanford University IT describes this path, so your labels may differ slightly.
Tip: If the labels differ, look for the sidebar setting that mentions Unreads.
Jump to the first unread message with ⌘ J
Start in the Slack desktop app for Mac. Look at the sidebar under Home. Channels and direct messages with unreads show in bold. Click one so it opens and becomes the active conversation. Then press ⌘ J. Slack moves focus to an unread message in that conversation, so you can read from that point on.
Slack lists ⌘ J as a desktop app shortcut in its keyboard shortcuts article. That matters if you usually work in a browser tab. The Slack pages I checked do not give a web app equivalent. For this shortcut, open the desktop app.
The shortcut only works from inside a conversation. If you press it while the sidebar has focus, nothing moves. Click the message list once, then press the key again.
Test which unread message ⌘ J picks
Two Slack help articles describe this key differently. The keyboard shortcuts article says it jumps to the most recent unread message in a conversation. The navigation article says it moves focus to the first unread message. Those phrases point at different messages, so test it yourself.
Pick a conversation with at least three unread messages. Note the timestamp of the oldest unread and the newest unread. Press ⌘ J and see which message gets focus. Repeat the test once in another conversation to confirm the result.
Slack's notes do not say which behavior each release uses. Trust your own test over any summary, including this one. Once you know which message you land on, you can plan your reading around it.
Open every unread in one list with the Unreads view
Use the Unreads view when you want every unread across channels and direct messages in one place. Press ⌘ ⇧ A, or click Unreads at the top of the sidebar under Home. Slack's help article gives both routes for desktop.
Here is a simple routine. Say you come back from a meeting with unreads in several places. Press ⌘ ⇧ A, then press F6 to move focus into the message list. Use ↑ and ↓ to move between messages. When a group is done, press Esc to mark it read.
Inside Unreads, you can sort the list by sidebar order, alphabetically, by recommended order, by newest activity, or by oldest activity. Pick oldest activity when you want to clear things in the order they arrived. Pick newest activity when the latest thread matters most.
You can also filter by sidebar section. Slack says custom sections need a paid plan. If a conversation seems missing, check the sort and the filter first. A filter you set last week can hide the thing you want today.
| Action in Unreads | Mac keys |
|---|---|
| Open Unreads view | ⌘ ⇧ A |
| Move focus to message list | F6 |
| Move between messages | ↑ / ↓ |
| Mark a group as read | Esc |
| Mark a message as unread | ⌥ click |
| Expand or collapse a group | ← / → |
The Unreads view on desktop does not let you send new messages. To reply, click a message's timestamp. That opens the message in its conversation, where you can type. Typing in the list itself does nothing useful, so click through first.

Move between unread channels with the keyboard
Option Shift Down Arrow (⌥ ⇧ ↓) jumps to the next unread channel or direct message. Option Shift Up Arrow (⌥ ⇧ ↑) goes back to the previous one. Slack's shortcut page lists both keys together, so they work as a pair.
A simple routine works well. Press ⌥ ⇧ ↓ to land on the first unread conversation. Read it, press Esc to mark it read, then press ⌥ ⇧ ↓ again. Keep going until nothing is bold in the sidebar.
Use ⌥ ⇧ ↑ when you pass a conversation by mistake. It walks back up the order. You do not have to start over from the top of the list.
Mark messages read, unread, or everything read
Esc marks the messages in the current conversation read, according to Slack's shortcut page. Shift Esc marks every message read. Option-click on a message marks it unread again, so it stays on your list until you deal with it.
Shift Esc is the risky one. It clears unreads across everything, not only the conversation you are in. Slack's Unreads article describes a Mark All Messages Read option at the bottom of the desktop view, with an Undo option. If you hit it by mistake, click Undo right away.
There is also a mouse route for marking a message unread. Hover over the message, click the three dots, and choose Mark unread. Slack's send and read article describes this on desktop.
Use these keys to manage the list, not only to clear it. Marking a message unread is a reminder to yourself. A long thread may need a second read later, so leave it marked.
Pin Unreads to your sidebar
If you keep reaching for Unreads, pin it. Click your profile image, choose Preferences, and open the Home tab. Under Always show in the sidebar, tick Unreads. This path comes from Stanford University IT, which described it for Slack's December 2023 redesign. Slack's own article only says to adjust sidebar preferences, so your labels may differ a little.
Stanford's notes also mention an Unreads only filter at the top of Home. Use it when you want Home to show only the items with unreads. It is a filter, so clear it when you want the full list back.
Pinning matters most if you return to Slack several times a day. A visible Unreads entry saves you a search through the sidebar every time you switch back.
When ⌘ J does nothing: fixes to try first
Most failures come from a few causes. Check them in this order. The first check fixes most cases, so start there.
- Confirm the conversation has unread messages. ⌘ J has nothing to jump to without them.
- Confirm you are in the desktop app. Slack lists ⌘ J as a desktop only shortcut.
- Click inside the message list first, so focus is in the conversation.
- Test the default key in a plain conversation. A remapped shortcut can conflict with it.
Here is a worked example. You open a channel with two unreads and ⌘ J seems to do nothing. Check the sidebar first. If the name is not bold, there is nothing to find. If it is bold, click the message list and press ⌘ J again.
Slack's Mac release notes say version 4.0.0, released July 15, 2019, fixed customized shortcuts on macOS that sometimes did not work. If you have remapped keys, test ⌘ J in a plain conversation with unreads. If it works there, the remap is the likely cause.

Pick the right method for the job
| Keys | Scope | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| ⌘ J | One conversation | Reading from the first unread there |
| ⌘ ⇧ A | Every channel and DM | Working through the full queue |
| ⌥ ⇧ ↓ and ⌥ ⇧ ↑ | Next or previous unread conversation | Moving in order without the mouse |
| Esc | The current conversation or group | Closing out what you have read |
| Shift Esc | Every message | Clearing everything, with care |
Which Slack for Mac version to expect
The Mac release notes list 4.53.280, dated November 3, 2026, as the newest entry dated before today, November 7, 2026. An entry for 4.53.283 is dated November 9, 2026, which is later than today, so I did not count it. None of the five newest entries mention unreads, shortcuts, the sidebar or Home.
I found no version change to these keys. The shortcut pages do not say which release added them. I did not check which version your Mac runs, so compare your version with the notes before you assume a change.
Why fast unread checks matter on busy days
37%
of desk workers log on outside standard hours at least weekly, in Slack's Workforce Index survey
The surprising connection between after-hours work and decreased productivity (Slack blog)53%
of desk workers feel pressure to respond to messages quickly, even if sent after hours
The State of Work in 2023 (Slack blog)Slack's surveys point at the same pressure. Its State of Work 2023 study surveyed 18,149 desk workers and executives in nine countries. Many desk workers feel they must reply quickly, even after hours.
Slack's after-hours study covered 10,333 workers across six countries. It found that workers who feel obligated to log on report productivity scores 20% lower. Those surveys did not study unread navigation, so read the numbers as context, not proof that one key fixes anything.
A practical use is to pick two or three set times a day to check Unreads. That beats watching bold names all day. The shortcut is only a faster way to read what you already have.
Common mistakes people make with unreads
- Pressing ⌘ J with no conversation open. Click into the conversation first.
- Treating bold as urgent. Bold means unread, but the message may be old. Check the timestamps.
- Using Shift Esc to clear one channel. It clears everything. Use Esc for a single conversation.
- Typing a reply in Unreads. On desktop, click a message's timestamp to reply.
- Forgetting Option-click. Mark a message unread when you need to come back to it.

If it does not work
- ⌘ J does nothing
- Confirm the conversation has unread messages, since bold means unread in the sidebar. Then confirm you are in the desktop app, because Slack lists ⌘ J as a desktop shortcut.
- Unreads is missing from the sidebar
- Open your profile image, choose Preferences, go to Home, and tick Unreads under Always show in the sidebar. Stanford University IT also notes an Unreads only filter at the top of Home.
- Shift Esc marked everything read by accident
- Look at the bottom of the desktop Unreads view for Undo. Slack's Unreads article describes a Mark All Messages Read option with an Undo option, so act quickly.
- A remapped key stops working
- Slack fixed customized shortcuts on macOS in version 4.0.0, released July 15, 2019. Test the default ⌘ J in a plain conversation with unreads to see whether the remap is the cause.
- The web app has no ⌘ J shortcut
- Slack lists ⌘ J as desktop only, and its Unreads article covers desktop and mobile. I found no official web app equivalent, so click the conversation in the sidebar instead.
