Quick answer

  • Open mail.google.com in Safari or Chrome, then click the gear icon at the top right.
  • Under Density in the Quick settings panel, pick Default, Comfortable or Compact.
  • Compact removes the space between messages. Default and Comfortable keep it.
  • Gmail has no density shortcut, and there is no Gmail app for Mac to use instead.
  • Chat has its own density setting, so check it if Chat looks different.

What you need

  • A Mac with Safari or Chrome
  • A Google account that signs in to Gmail on the web
  • Access to mail.google.com in your browser

How to Change display density in Gmail on a Mac in Gmail on a Mac

  1. Open Gmail in your browser

Open Safari or Chrome on your Mac. Go to mail.google.com and sign in to the Google account you want to change. Check the account name before you go on, since you may have more than one signed in.

  2. Click the gear icon

    Gear icon (top right)

Look at the top right corner of the Gmail window. Click the gear icon. A panel called Quick settings opens with display options beside your inbox.

  3. Find the Density section

    Quick settingsDensity

Scroll in the Quick settings panel until you see the Density heading. Google's help page places density in this panel. If you cannot see it, check the tip.

Tip: Some guides call this menu Choose a View. Look for the Density heading either way.

  4. Choose Default, Comfortable or Compact

    Quick settingsDensityCompact

Click the option you want. Default and Comfortable add space between messages. Compact removes that space, so more messages fit on the screen.

Tip: Note the option that was selected before you clicked, so you can switch back.

  5. Check the inbox

Look at the message list. Google says selecting an option updates the inbox right away. Open a message with an attachment to see how attachments show in your chosen option.

  6. Close the panel

Click anywhere outside the Quick settings panel to close it. Your inbox keeps the density you chose.

  7. Optional: open all settings

    Quick settingsSee all settings

Click See all settings in the panel to open the full settings menu. Open it only if you want other options. You do not need it to change density.

  8. Check Chat if you use it

If you use Chat inside Gmail, look at it after you change density. Chat has its own Comfortable and Compact choice, and Compact in Gmail carries over to Chat in Gmail.

Why the steps happen in your browser

Gmail on a Mac runs in a web browser. Google's Gmail listing in the App Store is for iPhone and iPad only, and it does not list Mac support. So you use Safari or Chrome and go to mail.google.com.

That is good news for density. The setting lives in the Gmail web app, so the same steps work in both browsers. You do not need to install anything or learn a new menu.

Before you change anything

Density is a view setting. It changes how rows and attachments look in your inbox. It does not change the messages themselves, and you can switch back at any time.

Check two things first. Make sure you are signed in to the right Google account, because you may have more than one. Then note which density option is already selected, so you can return to it.

What each density option changes

Details from a university IT guide, a third-party source. Confirm them in your own inbox.
OptionSpace between messagesHow attachments show
DefaultAdds spaceFile-type icon and file title
ComfortableAdds spaceIcon on the right of the Subject
CompactRemoves spaceIcon only

Default and Comfortable both keep space between messages. The difference is attachments. Default shows a file-type icon with the file title, so you can read names in the list. Comfortable shows only an icon on the right side of the Subject.

Compact removes the space between messages. It shows attachments only as an icon. More messages fit on one screen, but each row carries less detail.

Pick the option that fits how you work

If you open Gmail mostly to read, choose Default or Comfortable. The extra space gives each message room. That helps when you read long threads and jump between them.

If you triage a long list and archive as you go, choose Compact. Scanning gets faster when more rows fit on screen. Try it for a day, then switch back if you miss the detail.

Here is a worked example. Say you open Gmail first thing and look for anything from your manager. Set Compact, scan the list, and open the two messages that matter. In the afternoon, switch to Default if you spend that time on replies.

Check the setting before and after you change it

Google's help page does not say which option a new account starts with. Third-party guides disagree on that point. The selected option in the panel is the only reliable answer for your account.

After you change it, verify the result. Open the inbox and look at the spacing. Then open a message with an attachment and compare the icon to the table above.

Keyboard shortcuts do not change density

Google's keyboard shortcut list has no shortcut for density. It also has none for opening Settings. Use the mouse or trackpad to click the gear icon at the top right.

Gmail's listed shortcuts on a Mac use ⌘. For example, ⌘ Enter sends a message. Those shortcuts help with other tasks, but none of them changes density. For more on them, read how to turn on keyboard shortcuts in Gmail.

Gmail and Google Chat use separate density settings

Chat in Gmail has its own density setting. Google announced it on October 30, 2024. It offers Comfortable, which Google lists as the default, and Compact.

Compact carries over from Gmail. If you pick Compact in Gmail, Chat in Gmail also shows compact. Google says you can adjust both under Gmail's settings. Admins cannot control the Chat setting.

If Chat looks different from your inbox, the two lists may use different settings. Check Chat's density option before you change anything else.

Adding Gmail to the Dock does not change density

Many people pin Gmail to the Dock so it opens like an app. That is a sensible habit. A Dock icon is still a shortcut to the same web app, so density lives in the same panel.

In Safari, open mail.google.com. Click the Share button in the toolbar, choose Add to Dock, then click Add. Apple's guide says the web app then appears in the Dock and in Spotlight's Applications.

In Chrome, click the More icon, the three dots at the top right. Choose Cast, save, and share, then Install page as app. Some sites also show an Install icon in the address bar.

Browser zoom looks like density, but it is separate

Sometimes Gmail looks bigger or smaller after a change, and you blame density. Zoom scales the whole page. Density only changes the spacing of the inbox list. Check zoom first if the text looks wrong.

A simple test helps. If the text size changed, look at zoom. If only the rows changed spacing, look at density.

A quick checklist before you close the tab

  1. Confirm you are signed in to the Google account you meant to change.
  2. Click the gear icon at the top right and find the Density heading.
  3. Pick Default, Comfortable or Compact, and note which one you chose.
  4. Open a message with an attachment and check how the icon looks.
  5. If you use Chat, check its density option separately.

Mistakes people make

  • Looking for density in a Gmail app on the Mac. Google lists no Mac app, so use the browser.
  • Searching for a keyboard shortcut. Google's shortcut list has none for density.
  • Assuming the Dock icon uses a different setting. It opens the same web app.
  • Expecting Chat to match Gmail exactly. Chat has its own density setting.
  • Following an old guide that says Choose a View, then giving up when the name does not match.
  • Mixing up browser zoom and density when the text size looks different.

When the names on your screen do not match

Google's help page puts Density in the Quick settings menu. A university IT guide calls the same menu Choose a View. Google's wording is the one to trust, and Google may change Gmail's layout over time.

This page could not check a signed-in Gmail window. The labels come from Google's help pages and a third-party guide. If your screen differs, look for the Density heading and its three options.

Gmail in Apple Mail is a separate setup

Some people read Gmail in Apple Mail instead of a browser. The steps on this page only apply to the Gmail web app. To connect your account to Apple Mail, read how to add Gmail to Apple Mail on Mac.

Next steps for a tidier inbox

Once the list looks right, tune what lands in it. Turn on categories in Gmail to sort mail into tabs. Create a filter in Gmail for mail you never open. Archive emails in Gmail once you finish with them.

If it does not work

The Density heading is missing from the panel.
Google changes Gmail's layout from time to time. Confirm you are in the Gmail web app at mail.google.com, then open the gear icon again. Use See all settings to look around, and check Google's Gmail help page.
You use a third-party mail app on your Mac.
This guide covers only the Gmail web app. Third-party mail apps are not covered here, so use their own settings.
The layout looks wrong after the change.
Check the browser zoom first, since zoom changes the whole page. Then pick the density option again. Reload the tab if the rows still look off.
Chat looks different from your inbox.
Chat has its own density setting, which Google announced on October 30, 2024. Open Chat settings and check the Density option there.
The Dock icon seems to use a different setting.
A Dock icon opens the same web app. Set density once in the panel, then open the Dock icon to check it.
You cannot find a keyboard shortcut for density.
Google's keyboard shortcut list has none for density or Settings. Use the mouse or trackpad to click the gear icon at the top right.

Questions people ask

Is there a Gmail app for Mac I can use instead?

Google's Gmail listing in the App Store is for iPhone and iPad only, and it does not list Mac support. On a Mac, change density in Gmail at mail.google.com in Safari or Chrome.

Is there a keyboard shortcut for density in Gmail?

No. Google's keyboard shortcut list has no shortcut for density or for opening Settings. Use the gear icon at the top right instead.

What is the difference between Default and Comfortable?

Both add space between messages. Default shows attachments with a file-type icon and the file title. Comfortable shows them only as an icon on the right of the Subject.

Does Compact affect Google Chat?

It can. Google says Compact in Gmail also shows Chat in Gmail in compact mode. Chat has its own density option, with Comfortable as the default.

Will adding Gmail to my Dock change the density?

No. A Dock icon opens the same Gmail web app. Density stays in the Quick settings panel, so set it after you open the app.

Why do some guides call this menu Choose a View?

A university IT guide uses that name. Google's help page calls the panel Quick settings and lists Density inside it. Google's wording is the one to trust.

My text got bigger after I changed density. Why?

Density and browser zoom are separate. Zoom scales the whole page, so check zoom if the text size changed. Density only changes spacing in the inbox list.

Does changing density delete or move any emails?

No. Density is a display setting. It changes how the list looks, not your messages.
