  • For a short break, choose Temporarily mute and pick 1 hour or Until tomorrow.
  • Mentions and direct messages still get through, and a numbered badge can still appear.
  • Slack's official help lists no Mac keyboard shortcut for muting a channel. Ignore any guide that gives one.

  • macOS 13 or later
  • A channel you have joined, open in the desktop app
  • Slack allowed in System Settings > Notifications, if alerts still appear

  1. Open the channel in the desktop app

    SidebarChannelsChannel name

Open the Slack desktop app on your Mac. In the sidebar, find the channel under Channels, then click its name. Wait until the messages load, so the header icons are visible.

Tip: If the channel is not in your sidebar, search for it first, then open it from the results.

  2. Find the Notifications icon

Look at the top of the channel, beside the channel name. Click the bell-shaped Notifications icon. A menu opens under it.

What muting a channel in Slack does

Muting a channel turns off the regular alerts from that channel. The channel stays in place until you hide it. You can still open it and read it whenever you like. Slack's mute help starts from the Notifications icon at the top of the channel, so that is where you begin.

Muting is not a full blackout. Some signals still reach you. A muted channel still shows a numbered badge when someone @mentions you or sends you a direct message. Most people miss this part, so plan for it.

  • A numbered badge when someone @mentions you in the muted channel.
  • A numbered badge when someone sends you a direct message.
  • A bold Threads item at the top of the sidebar, if someone replies to a message you sent in the muted channel.

The Threads signal is easy to overlook. Say you asked a question there last week. A reply can bold the Threads item even though the channel itself stays quiet. Open Threads when you have a free minute and clear it.

Mute and hide versus temporary mute

Mute and hide suits a channel you rarely need. Think of a finished project or a room you joined by accident. Temporary mute suits a short window, such as a focus block or a busy launch day. Slack's updates page lists the temporary option for one hour or until the next day, added in May 2026.

The three ways to quiet a channel from the Notifications menu.
OptionWhere to find itWhen it fits
Mute and hideNotifications iconA channel you rarely need
Temporarily mute, 1 hourNotifications icon, then More optionsA focus block
Temporarily mute, until tomorrowNotifications icon, then More optionsA busy day or a launch

Here is a worked example. You have a long design review ahead, and a launch channel keeps pinging you about small questions. Open the channel, click the Notifications icon, hover over More options, and pick Temporarily mute, then 1 hour. The alerts return when that hour is up. You did not have to remember to switch them back on.

Be careful with the wrong pick. If you choose Mute and hide for a channel you still check each morning, you may forget it exists. Temporary mute is the safer choice when you know you will come back to the channel soon.

Hiding muted channels from your sidebar

Muted conversations are usually hidden from the sidebar. You control that from the Home tab. Click the Manage my sidebar icon, then choose Hide muted conversations or Show muted conversations. Pick the setting that matches how much you want to see at a glance.

Some guides describe a different route. A third-party test of the Slack web app describes Preferences > Home > Sidebar Organization, with a setting to hide muted channels. We could not confirm that path on Slack's own pages. The test also did not cover the Mac desktop app. Start with the Home tab icon.

Unmuting a channel later

Slack's mute article explains how to mute a channel. The page we checked does not give the unmute steps in full. Open the channel, click the Notifications icon, and look for the option that turns notifications back on. The wording may differ from what you remember, so read each option before you click.

If the channel has vanished from the sidebar, you cannot reach it that way. Go to the Home tab, click Manage my sidebar, and choose Show muted conversations. Then open the channel and handle the notification setting from there.

Shortcuts and menus Slack does not offer for muting

Slack's keyboard shortcut page does not list a shortcut for muting a channel on Mac. The only mute shortcut on that page is ⌘ ⇧ Space. It toggles mute on a huddle. Do not press it expecting a channel to go quiet, because it will not do that.

Slack's Mac help also does not describe a menu bar item for muting a channel. The Notifications icon in the channel header is the route the official help describes, so use that. Some search snippets mention a /mute command. We could not confirm that command on a Slack page, so this guide does not rely on it.

Two shortcuts help once a channel is quiet. Both work only in the desktop app. ⌘ J jumps to the most recent unread message in a conversation. ⌘ ⇧ M opens the Activity view. Together they let you catch up without checking every channel by hand.

Interruptions add up. A 2024 survey by Insightful of 1,200 U.S. employees and employers found that 79% admitted they couldn't go a full hour without getting distracted. About one-third said apps such as Microsoft Teams and Slack, along with email notifications, disrupted their focus. The survey came from a vendor and was not peer reviewed. Treat it as a signal, not a verdict.

You may also see a 23-minute figure quoted for how long it takes to refocus. That number traces back to a 2005 study of 24 information workers by Gloria Mark, Victor Gonzalez, and Justin Harris. It measured how long people took to resume an interrupted working sphere. It did not measure how long it takes to regain full focus. Quote it carefully, or leave it out.

Versions, support dates and what to check first

The Slack desktop app for Mac needs version 4.44 or later, and macOS 13 or later. If the Notifications icon is missing from the channel header, check your app version first. Then check your macOS version.

Support is ending for older setups. Slack's support life cycle page ends support for macOS 13 and below, and for Slack desktop app 4.46.104 and below, on November 9, 2026. If you run either, update before that date. Slack says it updates its system requirements every six months, in May and November.

The newest Mac release we confirmed is 4.53.280, dated November 3, 2026. Menu labels can change between releases. If a label in these steps does not match yours, look for the same meaning in a nearby menu rather than the exact words.

When a muted channel still sends alerts to your Mac

Muting controls Slack's own notifications. Mac alerts have a separate setting. Open System Settings > Notifications > Slack, turn on Allow notifications from Slack, and choose Banners or Alerts. Slack's troubleshooting article says System Preferences, which is the older name. Recent macOS versions call it System Settings.

Check Do Not Disturb as well. Slack's guide says to turn it off in the Mac Control Center. Do not mix up muting with pausing. To pause everything, click your profile picture, hover over Notifications, and choose a time frame or Custom. Other people see a snooze icon next to your name while you are paused.

Mistakes people make when they mute a channel

  • Pressing ⌘ ⇧ Space on a channel. It only toggles mute on a huddle.
  • Expecting mute to stop every alert. Mentions and direct messages still show a numbered badge.
  • Forgetting that temporary mute ends on its own. Pick the duration you actually need.
  • Following a right-click guide from a web test. Use the Notifications icon in the Mac app.
  • Hiding a channel you still need. Show muted conversations brings it back to the sidebar.

Hidden channels are easy to forget. Check them on a fixed schedule, such as twice a day. That keeps a quiet channel from turning into a missed message.

What to do next after you mute a channel

Once the channel is quiet, catch up on your own schedule. Read how to view unread messages in Slack on Mac when you want to see everything you missed. If alerts still reach you, follow how to fix Slack notifications on Mac.

Muting is a small setting with a large effect on your day. Use temporary mute for focus blocks and Mute and hide for channels you rarely need. Check the sidebar and the Threads item now and then, so a reply that matters does not slip past you.

Go to the Home tab, click Manage my sidebar, and choose Hide muted conversations. Muted conversations are usually hidden, so this setting controls what you see.
I still see a numbered badge from the muted channel.
Badges still appear for @mentions and direct messages. Muting does not stop those. Open the channel and read the mention, then the badge clears.
Threads turned bold after I muted the channel.
Someone replied to a message you sent in that muted channel. Open Threads at the top of the sidebar and read the reply.
I cannot find the Notifications icon in the channel header.
Check that you run the Slack desktop app 4.44 or later on macOS 13 or later. Update the app first, then look again at the top of the channel.
Mac alerts from Slack still show up.
Open System Settings > Notifications > Slack. Turn on Allow notifications from Slack, choose Banners or Alerts, and turn off Do Not Disturb in the Mac Control Center.
A guide told me to right-click the channel and pick Notify you about.
That route comes from a third-party test of the web app and we could not confirm it on Slack's own pages. Use the Notifications icon in the Mac app instead.

Questions people ask

Does muting a channel in Slack on Mac stop every notification?

No. A muted channel still shows a numbered badge when someone @mentions you or sends you a direct message. A bold Threads item can also appear if someone replies to a message you sent in that channel. Muting turns off the regular channel alerts, which is most of the noise.

What is the difference between Mute and hide and Temporarily mute?

Mute and hide silences the channel and hides it from your sidebar. Temporarily mute silences it for 1 hour or until tomorrow, then the alerts come back on their own. Use Mute and hide for channels you rarely need, and temporary mute for a short block of focus.

How do I unmute a channel in Slack on Mac?

Open the channel, click the Notifications icon at the top, and look for the option that turns notifications back on. Slack's mute help does not list the unmute steps in full, so the wording may differ on your version. If the channel is hidden, choose Show muted conversations from Manage my sidebar on the Home tab first.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to mute a channel in Slack on Mac?

Not one that Slack lists for channels. The only mute shortcut on Slack's keyboard shortcut page is ⌘ ⇧ Space, and it toggles mute on a huddle. For a channel, use the Notifications icon in the channel header.

Can other people see that I muted a channel?

Slack's mute help does not describe anything other people can see. Pausing is a different setting. When you pause notifications, other people see a snooze icon next to your name.

Why does a muted channel still appear in my sidebar?

Muted conversations are usually hidden, but you control that on the Home tab. Click Manage my sidebar and choose Hide muted conversations. A third-party web test describes a different setting under Preferences > Home, which we could not confirm on Slack's own pages.

Which Slack and macOS versions do I need for these steps?

The Slack desktop app for Mac needs version 4.44 or later, and macOS 13 or later. Support for macOS 13 and for app 4.46.104 and below ends on November 9, 2026. Update before then if you run either.

Why do I still get a Mac alert from Slack after muting a channel?

Mac alerts follow their own settings. Open System Settings > Notifications > Slack, turn on Allow notifications from Slack, and choose Banners or Alerts. Also turn off Do Not Disturb in the Mac Control Center.
