How to rename a sheet in Numbers on Mac: step by step for Numbers 15.4
To rename a sheet in Numbers on Mac, double-click the sheet's name on its tab, type the new name, and press Return. If the name snaps back with an error sound, another sheet already uses that name, so pick a unique one.
Quick answer
- Double-click the sheet's name on its tab, type the new name, and press Return.
- Press Esc instead of Return to cancel and restore the original name.
- If the name reverts with an error sound, another sheet already has that name.
- Apple's guide covers Numbers 15.4, which needs macOS 26 or later.
- Apple documents no menu, right-click option, or shortcut for renaming, so double-clicking is the method.
What you need
- Numbers for Mac, version 15.4, for the steps in this guide
- macOS 26 or later, the requirement for Numbers 15.4
- A spreadsheet open in Numbers with at least one sheet tab
How to Rename a sheet in Numbers on Mac in Numbers on a Mac
Open the spreadsheet in Numbers
Open the file in Numbers for Mac. Find the row of sheet tabs, where each tab shows one sheet's name. You can rename any sheet from this row, not only the one that is open.
Double-click the sheet's name
Double-click the name on the tab. Do not click the arrow on the tab's right side, because that opens a menu instead. Once the name becomes editable, you can type over it.
Tip: If a menu opens, you clicked the arrow. Close it and double-click the name.
Type the new name
If the old name is still in the field, press ⌘A to select it. Then type the new name. Pick a name that no other sheet in the file uses.
Press Return to save the name
Return
Press Return to end editing and keep the new name. If you made a mistake, press Esc instead to cancel and bring back the original name.
Check the tab bar
Look at the tab bar and confirm the new name shows. If the old name returns and an error sound plays, another sheet already uses that name. Scroll the tab bar fully left, find the duplicate, and pick a different name.
Tip: Look for the duplicate before you retype the same name.
Numbers for Mac has one documented way to rename a sheet. You double-click the name on the sheet's tab. Apple's sheets guide describes that method and nothing else for renaming. If you searched the menu bar or the right-click menu, you found nothing, and that is expected. The steps here use only what Apple documents, plus the fix people hit most often.

Rename a sheet by double-clicking its tab
Open the file first. Look for the row of sheet tabs. Each tab shows one sheet's name. Double-click the name itself. Do not click the small arrow on the right side of the tab. That arrow opens a menu, and the menu has no rename item.
| Task | What you do in Numbers for Mac |
|---|---|
| Rename a sheet | Double-click the sheet's name on its tab, then type the new name |
| Save the new name | Press Return |
| Cancel and restore the old name | Press Esc |
| Open the tab menu | Move the pointer over the right side of the tab, then click the arrow |
| Find a Rename item | Apple documents none in the menu bar, right-click menu, or keyboard shortcuts |
Type the name in plain words. Apple's guide sets no name length limit, so a long name is allowed. A short name is still easier to scan in a row of tabs.
Why the name snaps back to the old one
The most common cause is a duplicate. An Apple Community thread reports a renamed sheet that reverted to its old name, with an error sound. The accepted answer says another sheet already had that name.
Scroll the tab bar fully to the left. Look along the tabs for the exact name you typed. When you find it, rename one of the two sheets to something unique. A name like Q3 Budget Draft works better than Budget when the file already has a Budget sheet.
The thread poster used macOS Catalina 10.15.7, which is older than the Numbers version this guide covers. Treat the error sound as one user's report. Apple's own pages do not mention it.
Finish or cancel with Return and Esc
Return ends editing and keeps the new name. Apple's Numbers shortcut page lists Return for ending edits to a spreadsheet or sheet name. Esc also ends editing, but it restores the original name. Use Esc when you typed the wrong thing and want the old name back without retyping it.
Use Esc before you move on. Once you press Return, the name is saved. To change it again, double-click the tab and repeat the steps.
Move between sheets while you rename
A workbook with many tabs can slow you down. ⌘1 through ⌘7 select the first seven sheets. ⇧⌘{ and ⇧⌘} move to the previous and next sheet. ⌥⇧⌘{ and ⌥⇧⌘} jump to the first and last sheet.
Use these keys to find the tab, then double-click its name. The keys do not rename anything on their own. They only move the selection.
A worked example: renaming a copy of a sheet
Say you have a sheet called Budget and you want a version for the third quarter. Move the pointer over the Budget tab, click the arrow, and choose Duplicate. Numbers makes a copy of the sheet, and the copy gets its own tab.
Double-click the name on the copy's tab, whatever Numbers called it. Type Q3 Budget and press Return. Check the tab bar. You should see Budget and Q3 Budget. The original Budget keeps its contents.
The most common slip is renaming the original. Before you type, confirm which tab you double-clicked. If you renamed the wrong one, rename it back the same way.
Renaming several sheets in one pass
Apple's sheets guide describes renaming one sheet at a time. Work from the left. Rename a tab, press Return, then move to the next tab. ⌘1 through ⌘7 help you reach the first seven sheets from the keyboard.
Name each sheet when you create it. Renaming later means hunting through the tab bar again.
Check your Numbers version first
Apple's guide covers Numbers 15.4. That version requires macOS 26 or later. To check your version, open the Numbers menu and choose About Numbers. If your version is lower, compare what you see with the table above before you assume a fault.
In January 2026, Apple split Numbers for Mac into two apps. The Creator Studio edition is version 15.1. The old Numbers app moved to version 14.5, and MacRumors reports that it will no longer receive new features of any kind.
Both can stay installed on the same Mac, according to 9to5Mac. Apple lists the Creator Studio plan at $12.99 a month after a free trial. Keynote, Pages, and Numbers stay free for everyone. Apple says you can create, view, and edit spreadsheets without a subscription. Premium and intelligence features need one.

Apple Creator Studio: AppleThe tab menu does more than rename. Move the pointer over the right side of a tab, click the arrow, and you get Duplicate, Hide Sheet, Unhide, Delete, and a color option. Apple added hiding and showing individual sheets, plus colored tabs, in version 15.3.
Read each item before you click. Delete removes the sheet. Duplicate makes a second one. Neither renames the tab, and both are easy to mistake for a rename when you are hunting for the right item.
Renaming on iCloud.com
Numbers on iCloud.com needs a computer. On a tablet, you can only view your files. Apple's iCloud guide does not give renaming instructions. The double-click steps on this page are verified for the Mac app only.
Apple's features page lists limits for the web version. Apple Intelligence tools are not available there. Range-based pivot tables are not supported. Images must be 50MB or less. You can create as many sheets as you want.
One search snippet suggests double-click also works on iCloud.com. This page did not confirm that. Test it on a copy of the file before you rely on it.
Ask Lazur where the tab is
Hold ⌥⌘, which is Option and Command together, then ask Lazur where the sheet name is on screen. Lazur looks at your screen only while you hold the keys. It draws a circle and a label around the tab and answers out loud. You then double-click the name yourself.
For a walkthrough, ask Lazur to guide you. It works one click at a time and waits for each click. It does not click for you, and it does not type the name. The trial runs three days with no credit card. Plan details are on the pricing page.
Mistakes people make when renaming a sheet
- Clicking the tab arrow and looking for Rename. The menu holds Duplicate, Hide Sheet, Unhide, Delete, and color only.
- Typing a name that another sheet already uses. The change fails and the old name returns.
- Renaming the original by mistake. Check which tab you double-clicked before you type.
- Leaving the old text in the field. Press ⌘A to select it, then type over it.
- Assuming a tablet can rename on iCloud.com. Apple says tablets can only view files there.
Most of these come down to one habit. Look at the tab you are changing, then look at the tab bar once more after you press Return.
Name sheets so they are easy to scan
Short names fit well in a row of tabs. Use words that describe what the sheet holds, such as Inputs, Monthly, or Summary. Keep each name unique within the file. A quick check now saves a failed rename later.
Apple's guide gives no list of blocked characters. Stick to letters, numbers, and spaces until you know your file accepts more. That is a habit, not a rule from Apple.

What to do next
With the sheet named, check the rest of the workbook. The keyboard shortcuts guide covers rows, formulas, and sheets. If someone else needs the file, the sharing guide explains invites and links.
If a reader does not have Numbers, export to PDF or export to Excel first. For the app itself, see the Numbers page.
Renaming is a small step. The sheet name is the first thing people see, so it is worth the extra look.

If it does not work
- The name reverts and an error sound plays
- Another sheet already uses that name. Scroll the tab bar fully to the left, find the matching tab, and choose a unique name for one of them. The Apple Community poster used macOS Catalina, so treat the sound as one user's report.
- Double-clicking opens a menu instead of editing
- You probably double-clicked the arrow on the tab's right side. Double-click the name in the middle of the tab. The arrow menu holds Duplicate, Hide Sheet, Unhide, Delete, and color.
- No Rename item in the menu bar or right-click menu
- Apple's sheets guide documents no menu-bar path, right-click option, or shortcut for renaming. Use the double-click method instead.
- Your Numbers looks different from Apple's guide
- Check the version under the Numbers menu, About Numbers. Apple's guide covers Numbers 15.4, which needs macOS 26 or later. Version 14.5 is the old Mac app and gets no new features.
- Renaming on iCloud.com does not work as expected
- Apple's iCloud guide gives no renaming steps for the web. Numbers on iCloud.com needs a computer, and tablets can only view files. Test on a copy first.

Questions people ask
Can I rename a sheet in Numbers with a keyboard shortcut?
Apple's keyboard shortcut page does not list a shortcut that starts a rename. Double-click the tab name to start. Then use Return to save or Esc to cancel. Those two keys only work once you are already editing the name.
Why won't my sheet name change in Numbers?
The most likely cause is a duplicate name. Scroll the tab bar fully to the left, find the sheet that already uses the name, and choose a unique name. The error sound comes from one Apple Community thread, not an official Apple rule.
Is there a limit on sheet name length?
Apple's sheets guide does not give a name length limit. It also does not list blocked characters. If a long name fails, try a shorter name to see whether length is the cause.
Which version of Numbers do I need to follow these steps?
Apple's guide covers Numbers 15.4, which requires macOS 26 or later. Check your version in the Numbers menu under About Numbers. The old Mac app, version 14.5, gets no new features.
Can I rename a sheet on iCloud.com?
Apple's iCloud guide does not give renaming instructions for the web. Numbers on iCloud.com needs a computer, and tablets can only view files. Test the double-click on a copy of the file first.
Can I rename a sheet from the right-click menu?
Apple's sheets guide shows no right-click option for renaming. The tab arrow menu holds Duplicate, Hide Sheet, Unhide, Delete, and a color option. Use the double-click method instead.
Can Lazur rename the sheet for me?
No. Lazur does not click buttons or operate apps for you. It can circle the sheet tab, guide you one click at a time, or explain what you see on screen. You double-click the name and type the new one.
