How to share screen in Slack huddle on Mac: desktop app steps and fixes for 2026
To share your screen in a Slack huddle on Mac, start or join the huddle, click the share screen icon, pick a screen, window, or app, then click Share. Start from the channel or direct message with the headphones icon, using the Slack desktop app on macOS 13 or later and app version 4.44 or later.

Quick answer
- Open the channel or direct message, start the huddle, then click the share screen icon in the huddle window.
- Pick a screen, window, or application, optionally turn on Share system audio, then click Share.
- Up to two people can share at once. Free plan huddles allow two participants in total.
- Slack lists no official Mac shortcut for screen share. Use ⌘⇧H to start or leave a huddle.
- If a screen recording prompt keeps returning, reset Slack's entry in System Settings or with a Terminal command.
What you need
- A Mac running macOS 13 or later
- Slack desktop app for Mac, version 4.44 or later
- A huddle started or joined in a channel or direct message
- Screen recording access for Slack in System Settings
How to Share your screen in a Slack huddle on Mac in Slack on a Mac
Open the conversation
Open the channel or direct message where you want the huddle. Start the huddle from inside that conversation, not from a separate window.
Start or join the huddle
⌘⇧H
Click the headphones icon at the top of the conversation. The huddle window opens. You can also press ⌘⇧H instead.
Tip: The same shortcut also leaves or ends a huddle, so check the window before you press it.
Turn on video (optional)
Click the camera icon at the bottom of the huddle window if you want video. Slack's screen share steps do not include this step, so you can skip it.
Tip: On paid plans, only 25 people can turn on video at once.
Click the share screen icon
Find the share screen icon in the huddle window and click it. Slack's help article does not give the icon's label or position, so scan the controls for it.
Pick a screen, window, or application
Choose the whole screen, one window, or one application from the list. A single window keeps the rest of your desktop out of the call.
Turn on system audio if needed
Click Share system audio if the sound from what you share should reach the call. Slack added this option in June 2026.
Tip: Set it before you click Share, so the other people hear the sound from the start.
Click Share
Click Share to start sharing. Your shared screen then appears to the people in the huddle.
Mute or leave when you finish
⌘⇧Space
Press ⌘⇧Space to toggle mute. Press ⌘⇧H to leave or end the huddle. Slack's help article covers starting a share and does not spell out how to stop one, so check the huddle window for controls.
A Slack huddle is a quick call that runs inside a channel or direct message. Screen sharing lives in the huddle window, so you start the huddle first and share second. This page covers the Slack desktop app for Mac, because that is where Slack documents the screen share steps. On an iPhone or iPad, the steps differ. Tap the three dots, then tap Share Screen.
What you need before you share on Mac
- A Mac running macOS 13 or later
- The Slack desktop app for Mac, version 4.44 or later
- A huddle you started or joined in a channel or direct message
- Screen recording access for Slack, which macOS may ask you to allow
Slack's system requirements page sets macOS 13 and app version 4.44 as the minimums for the Mac app. The release notes list version 4.53.280, dated November 3, 2026, as the latest Mac release on or before today, November 7, 2026. None of the recent entries mention huddles or screen sharing. The help article names no version for these steps, so they apply to current builds. If your copy is older than 4.44, update first, then try again.
Check your version before you blame the huddle. Open the Slack menu in the menu bar, then choose About Slack to see the build number. A version older than 4.44 can miss features that the steps on this page assume. If you are on macOS 12 or older, the app will not run the current build at all, so the Mac upgrade comes first.
Step by step: share your screen in a huddle on Mac
Follow these steps in order. Slack's help article does not name the share icon or give its position in the huddle window, so scan the huddle controls until you find it. The camera step is separate from screen share. You can skip it if you do not want video.

Choose what to share: screen, window, or application
The picker gives you three choices. Share the entire screen when you need to move between several apps. Share one window when only one document, deck, or browser tab should be visible. Share one application when you want every window of a single program and nothing else. A single window keeps the rest of your desktop out of the call, including file names and notifications from other apps. That is the safest default when you are not sure what is open.
Before you click Share: a short checklist
- Check who is in the huddle. Everyone in it sees what you show.
- Close chat windows, password managers, and personal tabs you do not want on screen.
- Open the window you plan to share and confirm it shows the right page.
- Decide on system audio before the call starts, not halfway through it.
- Run one test huddle with a colleague if the call matters.
The checklist takes less than a minute. Most awkward moments in a shared call come from a notification or a tab that was open by accident. The picker also shows the windows that are open at that moment, so you can scan it before you commit to one.
When to turn on system audio
System audio is a separate choice, and it appears before you click Share. Slack added the option to share system audio during a screen share in June 2026. Turn it on when a video, a song, or an app sound needs to reach the other people. Leave it off when you only talk over your slides. Check the setting before each share, so no sound surprises the call.
How many people can share at once
Up to two people can share their screens at the same time in one huddle. The participant limit depends on your plan. Free plan huddles allow two participants in total. Paid plans allow up to 50 participants, but only 25 can turn on video at once. Before you share, look at who is in the huddle. Everyone in the huddle sees what you show.
If a second person needs to show something while you are sharing, one of the two shares has to stop first. Plan the order in advance. Agree in the channel who goes first, so the call does not stall while two people fight for the same button.
| Plan | Participants per huddle | Video at one time |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 2 | Not stated in Slack's help article |
| Paid | Up to 50 | Up to 25 |
What the other people see
Once you click Share, the people in the huddle see the screen, window, or app you picked. They do not see the rest of your desktop unless you chose the whole screen. Video from your camera is a separate control, so you can share your screen without turning video on. Slack's help article does not describe the layout for viewers, so run a quick test to see how your shared content looks on their side.
Keyboard shortcuts for huddles on Mac
Slack's official Mac shortcuts cover huddles but skip screen sharing. Press ⌘⇧H to start, join, leave, or end a huddle. Press ⌘⇧Space to toggle mute. There is no official Mac shortcut for starting a share or turning on video, so you click those icons. Press ⌘/ to open the full shortcut list. Slack's shortcuts article summary reads that key differently, so confirm it in the app. For the full list, see how to show keyboard shortcuts in Slack on Mac.

- ⌘ is Command, the key beside the Space bar with a loop symbol.
- ⇧ is Shift, the key with an upward arrow.
- ⌥ is Option, the key between Control and Command on the left side.
- ⌃ is Control, the key just left of Option.
Mistakes people make when they share a screen in a huddle
Most problems come from four habits. Each one is easy to fix once you know what to look for.
- Sharing the whole screen when one window would do. Notifications and personal tabs then show up for everyone on the call.
- Forgetting system audio. Turn it on before you click Share if the sound matters.
- Looking for screen share steps in a browser. Slack's pages give none for the web app, so switch to the Mac app.
- Dismissing the permission prompt. Allow access, then quit and reopen Slack.
Fix the screen recording permission prompt on Mac
Some Macs keep showing a screen recording prompt even though Slack already looks allowed. Slack's troubleshooting article ties this to moving between the App Store version and the direct download. Start with the settings path. If the prompt keeps returning, use the Terminal reset below.
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording.
- Click Slack, then click the minus icon to remove it from the list.
- Quit Slack, then open it again.
- When Slack asks, allow screen recording.
If the setting does not clear the prompt, reset Slack's entry from Terminal. Open Terminal and run tccutil reset ScreenCapture com.tinyspeck.slackmacgap. Then quit and reopen Slack. Slack's troubleshooting article says the last fix for users who moved from the App Store version was to reinstall the direct-download version from slack.com/downloads/mac. Slack 4.39.88, released June 17, 2024, also fixed repeated prompts for App Store users who had already granted access.
Browsers and the Slack web app
Huddles run in Google Chrome 137 or later and Firefox 139 or later. Slack's requirements page says those are the only browsers that support huddles. It also lists minimum versions for Safari 26 and Edge 136, but neither appears as a huddle browser. Slack's pages give no separate steps for sharing your screen in the web app. Slack also says drawing on a shared screen works only in the Mac and Windows desktop apps.

A worked example for a client call
Say you need to walk a client through a slide deck during a huddle. Open the client channel and start the huddle there. Click the share screen icon and choose the one window that holds the deck. Leave system audio off unless the deck plays a video. Click Share and talk. When you finish, look for the stop controls in the huddle window, because Slack's help article covers starting a share and does not spell out stopping one.
Two habits prevent the usual surprises. Run a short test huddle with a colleague before a call that matters. Open the share picker ahead of time, so you can see which windows and apps are listed.

Slack shortcuts for this on Mac
| To do this | Press |
|---|---|
| Start, join, leave, or end a huddle | ⌘⇧H |
| Toggle mute in a huddle | ⌘⇧Space |
| Open the full shortcut list | ⌘/ |
If it does not work
- Slack keeps asking for screen recording permission
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording, remove Slack with the minus icon, quit Slack, reopen it, and allow access. If that fails, run tccutil reset ScreenCapture com.tinyspeck.slackmacgap in Terminal, then restart Slack.
- You cannot find screen share in the web app
- Slack documents screen share steps for the desktop app. Open the Slack Mac app. Huddles in a browser need Chrome 137 or later or Firefox 139 or later, and Slack's pages give no web share steps.
- The other people cannot hear the sound from what you share
- Check that you clicked Share system audio before you clicked Share. If it was off, share again with the option turned on.
- Someone else is already sharing
- Only two people can share at once in a huddle. Wait for one share to end, or ask the other person to stop sharing.
