Quick answer

  • Google's offline setup runs in Chrome or Edge. Google does not list a Mac-only menu or a Mac keyboard shortcut for it.
  • Install the Google Docs Offline extension, then turn on Offline setting in Google Drive's settings.
  • Mark each file you need. Inside the doc use File > Make available offline. On the home screen use More > Available offline.
  • To check a file, click See document status next to the title. To turn offline mode off, use Menu > Settings and switch off Offline.

What you need

  • Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on your Mac
  • Google Docs Offline extension installed in that browser
  • Free space on your Mac's internal drive
  • A regular browser window, not private browsing
  • The browser profile signed into the right Google account

How to Turn on offline mode in Google Docs on Mac in Google Docs on a Mac

  1. Open the Google Docs Offline listing

In Chrome, open the Google Docs Offline page in the Chrome Web Store, then add it to your browser. Edge users are sent to the same store. Check that the publisher reads Google Ireland, Ltd.

Tip: The listing does not name Mac or Chrome OS as supported platforms, so test it with the steps below.

  2. Use a regular browser window

Open a normal Chrome window, not a private or Incognito window. Sign into the Google account you want offline, in the Chrome profile you use for it.

  3. Open Google Drive

Go to drive.google.com in that profile and sign in if asked. Keep the tab open until the steps finish.

  4. Open Drive settings

    Settings (gear icon)Settings

Click the gear icon near the top of Drive. Choose Settings from the menu that appears.

  5. Turn on Offline setting

    SettingsOffline setting

Find Offline setting in the settings and switch it on. Let the setup finish before you open files.

Tip: If you see 'Checking offline sync status', wait, then reload the page.

  6. Open a document to check status

    See document status

Open any Google Doc in the same profile. Click See document status next to the title.

Tip: If the status says offline is off, click Turn on.

  7. Mark a document inside the file

    FileMake available offline

Inside the open document, click File in the menu bar, then choose Make available offline.

  8. Or mark it from the home screen

    MoreAvailable offline

Go to the Docs home screen, find the file, click More, then choose Available offline.

Tip: A check mark appears in the bottom-left corner of the file when it is saved offline.

  9. Confirm the file is ready

Click See document status next to the title and check that the file shows as available offline. Do not assume it is ready from the check mark alone.

  10. Test with the connection off

Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the network. Open the marked file and make one small edit. Reconnect, then check that the edit appears in Drive.

  11. Turn it off when you finish

    MenuSettingsOffline

Open Menu on the Docs home screen, choose Settings, then switch off Offline. This also turns it off for Sheets and Slides.

What offline mode does in Google Docs on Mac

Offline mode lets you open and edit a Google Doc without an internet connection. Your Mac keeps a local copy of the file. When you reconnect, your changes sync back to Google Drive. The feature runs in your browser, so you do not install a separate Mac app.

Here is the part most guides skip. Google's offline help pages have no Mac section. The steps are the desktop steps for Chrome and Edge, and they apply to your Mac because that is where you run the browser. Google also does not document a Mac keyboard shortcut, so this guide does not invent one.

What you need before you turn it on

Check five things first. Most failed setups trace back to one of them. Work through them in order, since the browser and extension come before the file settings.

  • Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Google's help names only these two browsers for offline setup.
  • The Google Docs Offline extension from the Chrome Web Store. Edge users are sent to the same store.
  • Enough free space on your Mac. Google lists enough free device storage as a requirement.
  • A regular browser window. Google says private browsing is not supported, so skip Incognito in Chrome.
  • The right browser profile. Only one account per profile can have offline enabled.

Safari and Firefox do not appear in Google's offline help. Even if Safari is your everyday browser, do the offline setup in Chrome or Edge.

If you use a work account and a personal account, give each one its own Chrome profile. Sign into the correct profile before you change anything. That habit clears up most confusion about which account is offline.

Install the Google Docs Offline extension first

The extension does the offline work, so the Drive switch alone is not enough. Google says offline setup needs the Google Docs Offline Chrome extension. Install it before you touch any settings.

Read the Chrome Web Store listing before you install. The rating is low, and the listing does not explain why people rate it that way. It is still the extension Google points to, so the steps in this guide use it.

After you install it, open Chrome's extensions list and check that Google Docs Offline is turned on. If offline setup fails later, check the extension first, then work through the symptom table below.

Two ways to switch on offline access

You can turn on offline access from two places. The Drive route sets it up from the settings page. The file route starts from one open document and shows whether it is ready.

Use the Drive route when you expect to work offline often. Use the file route when you only need one document this week. Pick whichever route matches the screen you are looking at.

On the Drive route, the gear icon sits near the top of the page. Click it, choose Settings, then turn on Offline setting. Wait for the setup to finish before you open your files, since Google may show a checking message for a moment.

Mark each document you need

Turning on offline access does not save every file. You still mark each document. Only marked files open without a connection when you are offline.

There are two places to mark a file. One is the open document. The other is the Docs home screen. Both do the same job, but the home screen is faster when you want to mark several files in a row.

Be selective. Every saved file takes space on your Mac. Google also warns that very large files can fail to sync. Mark the drafts and reference files you need, and leave the rest online.

How to turn offline mode off

Turning off offline mode is the reverse of turning it on. Open Menu on the Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screen, choose Settings, then switch off Offline. This turns it off for all three apps, not only Docs.

Use the off switch when you share a Mac or no longer need local copies. If you only want one document to stop syncing offline, open it and toggle File > Make available offline off instead.

Limits and edge cases to know

Offline mode has limits. Only one account per browser profile can have it enabled. An administrator can disable it for a work or school account. Very large files can fail to sync.

Some people do not need to turn it on. Google says offline turns on automatically for ChromeOS users and for people with Drive for desktop installed. If you run Drive for desktop on your Mac, check the Offline setting anyway, so you know its state.

Drive for desktop covers the files in your Google Drive folder, not Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides. Right-click a regular file in Finder and choose Available offline if you want that file offline. Your documents still need the browser setup.

Symptoms and first checks

Most problems point to one of three causes. Your account, your browser profile, or your connection. Find the likely cause first, then run the first check before you reinstall anything.

A worked example for a long flight

Say you have a long flight and a draft due when you land. Do the setup at home, on a fast connection. Install the extension, turn on Offline setting, then mark the draft with File > Make available offline.

Before you board, open See document status next to the title. Check that the file shows as available offline. If it does not, reconnect, wait, and check again instead of trusting an old status.

On the plane, the draft opens and your edits save on the Mac. After you land and connect, the changes sync back to Drive. Open Drive afterward and confirm the draft shows your edits.

Where Lazur helps, and where it stops

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac. It lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘, which means Option and Command, and ask about anything on screen. Lazur answers out loud.

Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models.

Ask where a control is, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to do something, and Lazur guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click. You do the clicking.

Lazur does not click buttons, edit files, or operate other apps for you. It is not a plugin or add-in for Google Docs, and it has no partnerships with any app maker. Think of it as a guide that sits beside your browser.

Lazur has a 3-day Pro trial with no credit card. The trial starts when you first open the app. Check the pricing page for plan details.

Mistakes that waste time

  • Using a private window. Google says offline setup does not support private browsing. Open a regular window first.
  • Skipping the extension. The Drive switch does not finish the setup on its own.
  • Expecting Drive for desktop to cover Docs. It covers regular files in the Drive folder, not Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
  • Marking every file. Each saved file takes space, so mark only what you need.
  • Mixing accounts in one profile. That causes the message about another user already enabling offline access.

Check free space before you start. Choose Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage to see how much room is left. Google lists free device storage as a requirement, so a nearly full disk is a real risk.

Test it before you need it

Test while you still have a connection. Turn off Wi-Fi, then open a file you marked. Make one small edit, turn Wi-Fi back on, and check that the edit appears in Drive.

If the test fails, read the status line first. Then use the symptom table. A failed test is far easier to fix at home than at an airport gate.

If you share a file after you edit it offline, read how to add a comment in Google Docs on Mac. Before you travel, you may also want how to make a copy of a document in Google Docs on Mac.

If it does not work

Checking offline sync status. Please wait.
Reload the page and retry. If it still stalls, clear site data for docs.google.com in Chrome, then turn offline access on again.
Offline sync is disabled by your administrator
Your administrator has turned offline sync off. Contact your Google Workspace admin, since you cannot change that setting yourself.
Another user has already enabled offline access on this computer
Only one account per browser profile can have offline enabled. Switch to a separate Chrome profile for this account and try again.
Offline setup failed
Turn offline off and on again, then clear site data for docs.google.com. Google suggests this order.
Could not sync document
Check your network connection, then toggle File > Make available offline off and on. If the file is very large, split it into smaller documents.
