People who already use ChatGPT on their phone
Most people who search for a Claude for Mac alternative have one of three problems. The app feels heavy on their Mac. The price does not fit how often they use it. Or they want help inside other apps, not a separate chat window. This page takes each problem in turn, with the numbers I could verify.
Why people look for a Claude Mac app alternative
An alternative does a similar job, but in a different way. Some alternatives are chat apps. Some are voice tools. A few do both. Start with the work you do most each week, then compare the apps against that work.
Before you switch, write down three things. Name the task that eats the most time. Name the app you open most. Set the monthly amount you can justify. Those three answers settle most of this comparison.

The three apps in this comparison
Lazur is a voice assistant that lives in the notch of your Mac. Hold ⌥ ⌘, which is Option plus Command, to ask about anything on screen. Lazur answers out loud. It runs on macOS, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Claude for Mac is Anthropic's desktop app. The download page at claude.com/download offers one universal macOS DMG for Apple silicon and Intel Macs. The desktop app also adds quick entry from anywhere in the system, Claude Code inside the app and the Claude in Chrome connector.
ChatGPT for Mac is OpenAI's desktop app. OpenAI's download page says the app brings in ChatGPT Work and Codex, plus context from your email, screenshots, files and anything on your screen. I could not confirm the minimum macOS version from OpenAI's pages.
Pick the app by the job you do most
Long drafts, research notes and document rewrites: start with Claude for Mac or ChatGPT for Mac.
Asking what a button does while you work in another app: Lazur is built for that job.
Typing by voice in any app: Lazur dictates while you hold fn. Test the voice features of the other two before you rely on them.
Editing local files: Claude for Mac has desktop extensions for local tools and files, and reviewers rate it well here.
Quick questions about the screen with spoken answers: Lazur answers out loud, and reviewers praise ChatGPT's voice mode.
What Claude for Mac does well
Claude for Mac gets strong marks for writing and code. Nektony's reviewer calls Claude's writing and coding output strong. That is opinion, and I did not run those tests myself. Setapp's reviewer says Claude is ahead for computer use because it can edit local files.
Claude also keeps your work in sync. Anthropic's download page says conversations, projects, memory and preferences sync across devices when you are signed in. The same page says local Cowork sessions stay on-device.
Where the Claude Mac app falls short
Two complaints come up in the reviews I read. The first is how the app is built. John Gruber's Daring Fireball post from 3 July 2026 calls the Claude Mac app 'an Electron clunker.' That is his opinion. I did not find Anthropic confirming the architecture.
The second is memory use. In one Nektony test on an M1 MacBook Pro with 8 GB of RAM, running macOS Tahoe 26.4.1, Claude's Mac app used about 1.2 GB at peak. ChatGPT's app used about 340 MB in the same test. That is one reviewer, one machine and one test.
One reviewer also says the Claude app writes 8 to 13 GB of data to disk every hour. The reviewer cites a GitHub issue, and I did not check it, so I left that figure out of this page.
macOS 13
Minimum macOS version for the Claude Mac app, per Anthropic's install help article
Claude's pricing page lists Free at $0. Pro is $17 per month for everyday work, billed as $200 up front annually, or $20 if you bill monthly. Max is $100 per month and gives 5x Pro usage. Ultra is $200 per month and gives 10x Pro usage weekly.
Team standard seats are $20 per seat per month billed annually, or $25 billed monthly. Premium seats are $100 or $125. Enterprise is US$20 per seat per month billed annually, with a 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates.
The annual Pro plan costs $200 up front. Twelve monthly payments of $20 come to $240, which is $40 more over a year. Pay monthly first if you are not yet sure you will use Claude every month.
The pricing page has no last-updated date. It also says prices and plans are subject to change at Anthropic's discretion. Check the page on the day you pay.
ChatGPT for Mac: what I could and could not verify
I could not confirm ChatGPT's prices. The pricing page at chatgpt.com/pricing showed plan names with no dollar amounts in the text I captured. Those names are Free, Go, Plus, Pro and Business. Read the amounts on the page before you compare.
The plan page does describe what each tier includes. Go may include ads. Plus includes projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile, with limits. Pro adds an always-on agent called Dot and monthly API credits. The credit amount was not in my captured text.
Reviewers rate the app well, with a caveat. Daring Fireball calls ChatGPT's app 'a truly native Mac app,' which is opinion. Nektony lists the broadest feature set and the most mature real-time voice mode as strengths. Setapp says ChatGPT has a stronger mix of text, voice, image generation and data analysis. These views agree, but none of them is a measured test.
Lazur on Mac: a voice assistant that sees your screen
Lazur sees your screen only while you hold the shortcut. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask about anything on screen. Lazur answers out loud. Ask where something is, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it on your screen.
Ask how to do something, and Lazur guides you one click at a time. It waits for each click before it moves on. Here is a simple case. You are in a spreadsheet and cannot find the export option. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask where export is. Lazur circles the button, and you click it yourself.
Lazur also handles everyday actions by voice. The list includes timers, Apple Reminders, Calendar events, notes, music and volume, opening apps and links, web search and Shortcuts. For research, Lazur runs background jobs in its own Chrome tabs, through the Lazur for Chrome extension. The job comes back with a summary and a report.
Be clear about the limits. Lazur does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. It is not a plugin or add-in for any app. Lazur runs on macOS only. Windows is planned, not available.
Lazur pricing and what the 3-day trial covers
Lazur has a 3-day Pro trial with no credit card. The trial starts when you first open the app. Pro is $18 per month, or $15 per month billed annually, with 150 AI actions. Power is $120 per month, or $96 per month annually, with 1,000 AI actions. Dictation is unlimited on both plans.
The facts I have do not define one AI action. Use your normal week during the trial, then pick the plan that covers it. Do not guess from the monthly price alone.
On sticker prices, Lazur Pro at $18 sits close to Claude Pro at $20 billed monthly. The two plans do different jobs, so the sticker price is only where the comparison starts.
Privacy: what each app keeps and what it sends
Claude's privacy page is dated July 1, 2026. It says deleted chats leave back-end storage within 30 days. Flagged chats may be kept up to two years. Trust and safety scores may be kept up to seven years.
Model training is a setting you choose. If you allow your data to be used, it may be kept de-identified for up to five years in training pipelines. That applies to new or resumed chats after you turn it on. Turning the setting off stops future training. Data in training runs already in progress is still included.
Lazur listens and looks at your screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer you, and they are not stored. Your content is never used to train AI models. Memory of what you asked and did stays on the Mac.
I could not verify ChatGPT's privacy or training controls. The OpenAI pages I tried returned errors. Read OpenAI's privacy and data control pages before you paste client files into any of these apps.
Dictation and voice: the honest comparison
Lazur dictates clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app. Hold fn to start. Lazur also has snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots. Dictation is included on both paid plans, and it is not the headline feature.
The Claude desktop voice story is unclear from my sources. Nektony's reviewer says the Mac app has only dictation, with no full conversational voice mode on desktop. Other sources disagree. Test the feature in the app before you rely on it.
ChatGPT's voice is the one reviewers praise most. Nektony calls its real-time voice mode the most mature, which is opinion. Try it on your own questions, not on a demo prompt.
A week of work, priced out
Say you write three client memos a week, check research in Chrome, and dictate notes between meetings. Writing the memos is a chat job. Claude Pro bills $20 a month, or $200 up front for the year. Read ChatGPT's amounts on its pricing page before you choose.
Dictating notes between meetings is a Lazur job. Pro is $18 per month, or $15 billed annually, and dictation is unlimited on both plans. Research runs in Lazur's own Chrome tabs and comes back with a report.
Many people end up with one chat app and one voice helper. Try the free trial or free tier of each before you pay for both. Keep the one you open without thinking about it.
Common mistakes when you switch from Claude for Mac
Comparing annual and monthly prices as if they were the same. Claude Pro is $200 up front for the year, or $20 a month.
Expecting Lazur to do the task for you. It guides you one click at a time, and you do the clicking.
Skipping the macOS check. Claude for Mac needs macOS 13 or later.
Testing with a demo prompt. Run one real task from your week instead.
Trusting one reviewer's memory test. Check Activity Monitor on your own Mac.
Forgetting that Lazur is macOS only. Windows is planned, not available.
Starting the Lazur trial before you have time to test it. The trial starts on first open, so pick a free afternoon.
Edge cases that change the answer
Windows and Linux users get a different answer. Anthropic's download page lists Windows x64 and arm64 setups, a Microsoft Store listing and a Linux beta for Ubuntu and Debian. Lazur is not an option on a Windows PC yet.
Older Macs change the answer too. Claude's Mac app needs macOS 13 Ventura or higher. The Lazur facts I have do not list a minimum macOS version. Check About This Mac before you buy anything.
Client data changes the answer as well. Claude's training setting is opt-in. Lazur sends audio and screenshots to AI providers to answer you, and it does not store them. Read each vendor's rule before your first paste.

How to test a Claude for Mac alternative in one afternoon
Check your macOS version. Click Apple menu > About This Mac. Claude for Mac needs macOS 13 Ventura or higher.
Open Activity Monitor. Press ⌘ Space, type Activity Monitor and press Return. Click the Memory tab and note what each app uses during a 20-minute session.
Run the same three tasks in each app. Use one long writing task, one research question and one question about something on screen.
Start the Lazur trial. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask about something on a page you know well. Check that the circle and label land on the right thing.
Read each vendor's privacy page before you paste client files into any app.
Pick the app that saved you the most time on real work. Then check its pricing page on the day you buy.
Claude's Free plan costs $0 and has limited usage every five hours and weekly, per Anthropic's pricing page. ChatGPT lists a Free plan, but I could not confirm its limits, so check their pricing page. Lazur has no free tier. It has a 3-day Pro trial with no credit card.
Which Macs can run Claude for Mac?
Anthropic's install help article says the Mac app requires macOS 13 Ventura or higher. The download page offers one universal DMG for Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Older guides may list older minimums, so use Anthropic's page as the reference.
Does Lazur replace Claude for Mac?
Not for every job. Lazur answers questions about your screen, guides you through steps and dictates text. It does not edit files or operate other apps for you. For long chats, Claude or ChatGPT fits better. For help while you work in other apps, Lazur fits better.
Does Lazur work on Windows?
No. Lazur runs on macOS only, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Windows is planned, but it is not available yet.
Does Claude train on my chats?
Only if you allow it. Model training is a setting. If you allow it, Anthropic says data may be kept de-identified for up to five years in training pipelines. Turning the setting off stops future training. Data in training runs already in progress is still included.
Is ChatGPT for Mac lighter on memory than Claude for Mac?
In one Nektony test on an 8 GB M1 MacBook Pro, ChatGPT used about 340 MB at peak and Claude used about 1.2 GB. That is one reviewer, one machine and one test. Run Activity Monitor on your own Mac before you decide.
How long does the Lazur trial last?
The trial gives you 3 days of Pro. It starts when you first open the app, and it needs no credit card. Plan your testing for those three days, and use real work rather than demo prompts.
Product names belong to their owners. Lazur is not affiliated with Claude for Mac, ChatGPT for Mac. Prices and features come from each company's own site on the date shown; check there before you buy.
