Notion for game designers on Mac: design docs, databases and offline work in 2026
Notion for game designers on Mac runs as a desktop app on macOS 13 or later. Designers who write about their setup mostly use it for two jobs: a short design doc and a database that tracks features, bugs and ideas. This page covers both, plus the offline and file size limits that catch people out, and where Lazur helps while you work.
You say“Draft a short core loop section from my notes above.”
Lazur · drafts itLazur drafts a short section and types it at the cursor, below your notes, so you can edit it in place.
Draft at your cursor
Players scout a level for parts. They spend the parts at a forge between fights. Each choice changes what the next scout finds.
Quick answer
- Install the Notion desktop app on macOS 13 or later. Check your version under Apple menu > About This Mac first.
- Keep the design doc to one page. Long templates slow down the early decisions that matter most.
- Track features in one database and switch between table, board and timeline views.
- A timeline shows nothing until a date property holds a range of dates.
- Offline mode is per device. Only the first 50 database rows download on their own, and embeds and forms do not work offline.

Notion desktop app requirements on Mac
Start with your Mac, not the template. Notion's help center says the desktop app requires macOS 13 or above. It lists no chip, memory or disk requirements. So a Mac on macOS 13 or later meets the stated requirement, on Apple silicon or Intel. The Notion desktop page offers three builds: Universal, Apple Silicon and Intel x64.
Check your version before you download anything. Click the Apple menu, then choose About This Mac. The window shows your macOS version and chip. If the version is older than 13, update first under Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
For the full install steps, read how to install the Notion desktop app on Mac. If you see a message that the app is not supported, this fix guide covers that error.

One-page game design doc in Notion
A one-page doc is the format most designers can finish. CG BOSS, a designer who writes about this setup, keeps a one-page game design doc in Notion. The template has sections for the main theme and hook, the core game mechanic, inspiration, the unique selling point, and three inspiration screens. The author says the main problem with long templates is analysis paralysis.
Write the core mechanic first. Everything else in the doc depends on it. Describe what the player does in a few sentences, with one example from a real play session. If you cannot describe it in a few sentences, the idea is not ready for a doc yet.
Each section should answer one question. What does the player feel at the start? What changes after the first fight? Write short answers. Add detail only when a teammate asks for it. The doc grows on its own once the team starts using it.
Duplicate a shared template instead of starting blank. CG BOSS says users duplicate the shared template, which keeps the structure the same across projects. Open the template, click Duplicate, and the copy becomes your own. Edits to your copy do not change the original.
Using a long template without getting stuck
Long templates work well as a checklist. They are a poor first draft. The G.D.D Game Design Document Template by Manuela dos Reis has an average rating of 4.95 from 8 ratings, with one written review. That is a small sample. Treat it as a starting structure, not a standard every project must meet.
Cut what you do not need on day one. Keep the sections you are actively working on in view. Move the rest under a toggle heading so the page stays readable. To set that up, see how to create a toggle in Notion on Mac.
Watch for the slow start. A long doc invites you to write about every system before any system works. Pick one loop, write it down, and test it with a teammate. Then add the next section.
Notion database views for game design
A design doc says what to build. A database tracks what is built and what is still open. In Notion, a database is a set of rows with properties. Notion lists six layouts: table, list, board, gallery, calendar and timeline. Each view shows the same rows in a different way, and you can add as many views as you like.
Pick the view by the question you need to answer that day. These are the views game teams usually use for feature work.
- Table: the full feature list, with columns for owner, status and notes.
- Board: columns for stages such as Idea, Prototype, Playtest and Done, moved by hand.
- Gallery: one card per screen or concept sketch, so the art is easy to scan.
- Calendar: milestones, playtest sessions and build deadlines.
- Timeline: the production schedule, once the database has a date range property.
Keep one database per kind of thing. Put features, bugs and playtest notes in separate databases. Link them with a relation property instead of copying text between them. Copies drift apart fast. Links stay in sync.
To build the first one, follow how to create a database in Notion on Mac. To show only one milestone on a board, use how to filter a database in Notion on Mac. Filters apply to the view you are in, so a board filter does not change the table.
Why your Notion timeline shows nothing
This is the first mistake most people hit. Notion's timeline help article says timelines only work if the database has at least one date property that holds a range of dates. Otherwise nothing is plotted. A blank timeline is not broken. It is missing its dates.
To add a timeline, click + next to the database or view name, then select Timeline. Make sure one date property has a start and an end. Fill both dates on every row you want to see on the chart. Rows with an empty range stay off it.
Check the timeline after each big change. A renamed or deleted date column can empty the chart.
Notion offline mode on Mac
Offline mode came to desktop and mobile in Notion 2.53, announced on August 19, 2025. You can download a page for offline use, and you can create new pages while offline. Edits sync when the device reconnects.
Notion's release notes say Recents and Favorites download automatically on Plus, Business and Enterprise plans. Notion's offline guide says automatic downloads are limited to Business and Enterprise. The two pages disagree. Check your plan in the app before you travel, and mark what you need by hand.
Databases need extra care. When you download a database, only the first 50 rows download automatically. Mark the other rows one at a time. Sub-pages also need their own mark, one page at a time.
What stops working offline
- Embeds, forms and buttons do not work offline.
- You cannot share a page or change its permissions offline.
- Offline access is per device, so mark pages on each laptop you carry.
- Edits you make offline sync when the device reconnects.
The usual mistake is marking pages on your desktop, then opening the doc on a laptop that has no marks. The laptop shows nothing offline. Mark the pages on the device you will carry, then turn off Wi-Fi for a few minutes to test them.
Notion page history by plan
Designers rely on page history after a bad change. Notion's pricing page lists how far back history goes by plan. Free keeps 7 days. Plus keeps 30 days. Business keeps 90 days. Enterprise has a custom length. Decide what history you need before you choose a plan.
If you need a balance number from last quarter, the Free plan will not have it. Export a copy at each milestone as a backup. For PDF, HTML or Markdown output, see how to export a page in Notion on Mac.
Playtest files and the Notion upload limit
On the Free plan, images, videos and file attachments are capped at 5 MB each. Paid plans raise the cap to 5 GB per file, according to the pricing page. A gameplay clip can pass 5 MB quickly. Host long recordings elsewhere and paste the link into the doc.
Keep big spreadsheets in their own tool. A balance sheet works better in Google Sheets or Excel. Embed it in the doc so the link stays with your notes. Embeds do not work offline, so keep a local copy of the sheet for the trip. To embed one, read how to embed a Google Sheet in Notion on Mac.

Where Lazur fits in a design session
Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac. It lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘, which is Option plus Command, to ask about anything on screen. Lazur answers out loud. It sees and hears you only while you hold the shortcut.
Ask where something is, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it on your screen. This helps when you know a feature exists but cannot find its button. The same check works for a menu item you have not used before.
Ask how to do something, and Lazur guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click. It does not click for you. You stay in control of the mouse and the doc. That keeps you in the doc while you learn the layout.
Hold fn to dictate. Dictation writes clean text at the cursor in any app, so you can talk through a mechanic and keep both hands free. Dictation is unlimited on both Pro and Power plans, and it includes snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots.
Research runs in Lazur's own Chrome tabs, through the Lazur for Chrome extension. When it finishes, you get a summary and a report. Use this for quick market checks, such as how other teams set up a feature board.
Common mistakes game designers make in Notion
Most of these mistakes cost time in the week before a deadline. Each one has a simple fix.
- Building the full template before the core loop works. Write the one-pager first.
- Copying features into several places. Keep one database and link to it.
- Adding a timeline without a date range. Nothing plots, and the chart looks broken.
- Marking offline pages on one device only. Each device needs its own marks.
- Assuming Free keeps the history you need. Check the page history length first.
- Pasting a large video into the doc on the Free plan. Link to the file instead.
Notion pricing limits to check before you upgrade
Notion's pricing page lists Free at $0, Plus at $10 and Business at $20 per member per month. The page marks Business as recommended. It says you can save up to 20% with a yearly plan. It does not show separate monthly and yearly prices for each plan, so check the billing options in the app before you pay.
A single-member Free workspace can add as many pages and blocks as you like. A Free workspace with two or more members gets a limited number of blocks. Notion does not say the number. If your team has more than one member, test the limit before the first sprint.
A Notion setup for game designers you can finish in one sitting
- Check your Mac. Open Apple menu > About This Mac and confirm macOS 13 or later.
- Install the Notion desktop app. Choose Universal if you are unsure of your chip.
- Duplicate a one-page game design doc template and delete the sections you do not need today.
- Create a feature database with a table view and a board view.
- Add a date range property, then add a timeline view for the schedule.
- Mark the database and your key pages for offline use on each device you carry.
- Download Lazur from the download page, then hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask a question about the page to test it.
Lazur pricing sits on the pricing page. The Pro trial needs no credit card, so you can test the voice flow inside your own doc first.
What the evidence on game designers covers
Public evidence on how game designers use Notion is thin. This page relies on one designer's write-up, a public template page with 8 ratings, and Notion's own help articles. No usage survey of Notion among game designers turned up. Treat the workflow here as a starting point, not a measured norm.
Industry surveys tell you about the field, not the tool. GDC's 2026 State of the Game Industry survey had more than 2,300 respondents. It found that 36% use generative AI tools at work. It does not measure Notion use, so use it for context only.
Questions people ask
Do I need Apple silicon for Notion for game designers on Mac?
No. Notion's help center says the desktop app requires macOS 13 or above, and it lists no chip requirement. Notion's desktop page offers Universal, Apple Silicon and Intel x64 builds. Universal runs on both chip types. Check your chip under Apple menu > About This Mac.
Is Notion free for a game design team?
A single-member Free workspace can add as many pages and blocks as you like. A Free workspace with two or more members gets a limited number of blocks, and Notion does not state the number. Check the pricing page before the team grows.
Why does my Notion timeline show nothing?
The timeline needs at least one date property that holds a range of dates. Without one, nothing is plotted. Add the property, fill in a start and an end date on each row, then check the timeline again.
Can I use Notion offline on a flight or at a playtest venue?
Yes, once you set it up. Download pages for offline use on the device you carry. Only the first 50 rows of a database download on their own. Embeds, forms and sharing do not work offline. Edits sync when you reconnect.
How long does Notion keep page history?
Free keeps 7 days of page history. Plus keeps 30 days, Business keeps 90 days, and Enterprise sets a custom length. Export a copy at each milestone if you need older versions.
What is the file size limit for a playtest video in Notion?
On the Free plan, images, videos and file attachments are limited to 5 MB each. Paid plans raise the limit to 5 GB per file. For longer clips, host the video elsewhere and link to it from the page.
Can Lazur write my design doc for me?
Lazur drafts and types text when you ask. It does not click buttons or operate other apps for you. Read every draft yourself, because the design decisions are yours.
Does Lazur work inside Notion?
Lazur works on your Mac in any app, so you can use it while Notion is open. It listens and looks at your screen only while you hold ⌥ ⌘ or fn. It does not click buttons or operate Notion for you, so you stay in control of the doc.
Does Lazur work on Windows?
Not yet. Lazur runs on macOS, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Windows is planned, but it is not available.
