AI research assistant Mac for researchers: grants, email and Word in 2026

Lazur is an AI research assistant Mac users can talk to from any app. Hold ⌥ ⌘, ask about what is on your screen, and it answers out loud. This page covers where a researcher's computer time goes, how voice help fits into grants, email, Word and Zotero, and what to keep out of any AI tool.

A researcher's day with Lazur

Real things to say. Each one is a single hold of ⌥ ⌘.

  1. 08:30

“What is on my calendar today, and add the reviewer call at three.”

Lazur adds the reviewer call to Calendar at 15:00, sets a reminder before it, and reads out the rest of your day.

    Handles the small stuff

  2. 09:10

“Explain the page limit and budget rules in this funder call on my screen.”

Lazur reads the call on screen and says the page limit and budget cap out loud. It points at the sentence it used, so you can check it.

  3. 10:25

“Research recent trials that used this sample size, and send me a summary.”

Lazur runs the search in its own Chrome tabs. You get a summary and a report when it finishes. Open the papers yourself before you cite any of them.

  7. 16:50

“Dictate my lab notes, with the gene names spelled right.”

Hold fn and speak. Lazur types clean text at the cursor, using the words in your personal dictionary.

Most research days do not start at the bench or the desk with the data. They start in email. Microsoft's Work Trend Index found that the heaviest email users, the top 25%, spend 8.8 hours a week on email. That survey covered 31,000 full-time employed or self-employed workers in 31 markets. It did not sample researchers, so read the number as a clue, not a verdict. Still, it sounds familiar to anyone with a full inbox.

Where a research day really goes

Microsoft's survey also splits the average worker's time. Employees spend 57% of their time communicating, through meetings, email and chat. They spend 43% creating. The survey was not about researchers, but the pattern will look familiar. The creating share is the part that gets squeezed. It goes to writing, analysis and the next experiment. The communicating share goes to the lab group, the program officer, the co-author who needs a figure by the afternoon, and the IT ticket about the printer.

What a grant proposal costs in hours

Grant writing is the largest single block of time most principal investigators will see. A PLOS ONE paper surveyed 195 academics in October and November 2012, including 113 astronomers and 82 psychologists. The average grant proposal took 116 PI hours and 55 co-investigator hours. Respondents wrote about one proposal a year. The paper describes a proposal as one that needs at least one month of dedicated PI and CI effort.

Use the average to plan, not to predict. Divide 116 hours across the weeks before your deadline, and the scale becomes clear fast. Most people only count the writing. The budget justification, the data management plan, letters and revisions take a share too. A co-investigator's 55 hours also has to fit into their own week. Ask your co-investigators for dates early, and put their time on the calendar.

Which Mac apps take the most time

  • Outlook for Mac: the legacy client stops working against Exchange Online mailboxes in October 2026. Microsoft says over 95% of Microsoft 365 users already moved to the new Outlook for Mac.
  • Word: grant drafts, reviewer responses and manuscripts. Zotero 10.0.8 added support for Word split view on Mac.
  • Zotero: your reference library and the Word plugin that inserts citations.
  • Excel: budgets, sample tables and the pivot tables you build for results.
  • Chrome: funder portals, databases and the search tabs you keep open all day.
  • Notion: lab wikis, meeting notes and shared task lists, if your group uses it.

Check your macOS version before you update anything. Microsoft says that from the September 2025 update, version 16.101, Microsoft 365 and Office for Mac need macOS Sonoma or later to keep getting updates. Older systems still run Office, but they get no more updates, including security updates. If your lab Mac runs an older release, ask IT before you install anything new. Do not wait for a deadline to find out.

How an AI research assistant on Mac works in practice

Lazur lives in the notch at the top of your screen. You hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask. Lazur looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut, and it answers out loud. Ask where something is, and it draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to do something, and it guides you one click at a time. It waits for each click before it moves on.

Lazur does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. It is not a plugin or add-in for any app, and it has no partnership with any app maker. That limit matters for research work. You keep control of the draft, the citation and the send button. Lazur tells you where the button is. You press it.

Three modes cover most research tasks. Point finds a control or a sentence on screen. Guide walks you through a multi-step task, such as turning on Track Changes. Explain reads a dense page you have open, such as a funder's call for proposals, and says what it asks for. You pick the mode by how you ask.

Dictating drafts at the cursor

Hold fn to dictate. Lazur types clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app. Snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots are included. Add your lab's terms to the personal dictionary before your first long session. Gene names, instrument models and acronyms are the words most likely to be spelled wrong. Adding them once saves edits every day after.

Try this with a specific aims paragraph. Put the cursor where the paragraph goes. Hold fn and say the claim first, then the evidence, then the gap your work fills. Read the result back in the draft, and cut anything that does not carry weight. Speaking gets a rough first pass down fast. It also produces long, smooth sentences that sound right and say little. Edit those on the second pass, not the first.

Background research for literature sweeps

Ask Lazur to research a question, and it runs in its own Chrome tabs. You get a summary and a report when it finishes. Use it to map a topic, such as the sample sizes used in recent trials of a method. Then open the papers yourself. A summary is a lead. It is not a citation.

Edge cases matter here. Paywalled journals may stop the search at the abstract. Preprints can differ from the published version. Some sources repeat others, so a summary can count one result twice. Check the date and the journal on every source. Add the verified papers to Zotero by DOI, so the metadata comes from the record and not from a summary.

Keeping Zotero and Word working on Mac

Zotero's Word plugin installation broke on macOS 27 from version 10.0.6. Zotero 10.0.8, dated November 6, 2026, fixed it. The same release added Word split-view support on Mac. Version 10.0.7, from October 29, 2026, had no Mac-specific changes. Read the live changelog at zotero.org before you update during a deadline week.

Ask Lazur to walk you through the Zotero tab in Word. Lazur points at the Zotero group on the ribbon, then waits while you click. If the tab is missing, check that Word is up to date, then Zotero, then restart Word. Do this before a submission, not during one.

Data duties: what not to paste into an AI assistant

Research work includes material that is not yours to share freely. You may hold participant records, interview transcripts, patient data, unpublished results or a funder's review material. Your employer, your ethics board and your data use agreement set the rules. Follow them before you ask any AI tool about that material. Lazur does not change those rules. Nothing on this page is a compliance certification.

Here is how Lazur handles what it sees and hears. It listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers so Lazur can answer, and they are not stored. Content is never used to train AI models. Those are Lazur's rules. Your institution's rules may be stricter, and they win.

Common mistakes researchers make with AI on a Mac

  • Trusting a summary without opening the paper. Summaries often skip caveats in the methods section.
  • Pasting identifiable participant data to get a quick answer. Check your ethics approval first.
  • Updating Zotero or Office in the middle of a deadline. Read the changelog and the macOS requirement first.
  • Asking about the wrong window. Lazur answers about what is on screen, so bring the right document forward.
  • Expecting Lazur to send or submit. It guides and types. You press send and submit.
  • Assuming an older Mac still gets Office security updates. From version 16.101, macOS Sonoma or later is required.

Questions people ask

Does this AI research assistant Mac tool read my whole reference library?

No. Lazur looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut, so it works from what is open in front of you. Keep your library in Zotero, and use Lazur to point at the tools and explain the steps.

Can Lazur write my grant for me?

It can draft text and type it at the cursor when you ask. It cannot submit anything. Check every claim against your own data, and check the funder's rules for AI use in proposals before you rely on any draft.

Can I paste participant or patient data into it?

Follow your institution's data rules, your ethics approval and any data use agreement first. Lazur's privacy notes say audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer and are not stored. Your rules may still forbid it. When in doubt, ask your research office first.

Is Lazur a Zotero plugin?

No. Lazur is not a plugin or add-in for any app, and it has no partnership with any app maker. Zotero's own Word plugin handles citations. Lazur can point at the Zotero tab and explain the steps.

Does Lazur work on Windows?

Not yet. Windows is planned, not available. Lazur runs on macOS, on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

What happens to Office on an older Mac?

Microsoft says that from the September 2025 update, version 16.101, Office for Mac needs macOS Sonoma or later to keep getting updates. Older systems still run Office, but they get no more updates, including security updates. Ask IT before you update.

How much does Lazur cost?

Plans and prices are on the pricing page. The free trial starts when you first open the app and does not ask for a credit card. Dictation is unlimited on the paid plans.
