How to schedule a message in Slack on Mac: desktop steps for 2026
To schedule a message in Slack on Mac, type it in the message field, then click the arrow next to the paper plane icon and pick a time. Slack holds the message until that time, and you can review or change it later under Drafts & sent, on the Scheduled tab.
Quick answer
- Type your message, then click the arrow next to the paper plane icon to pick a time.
- Pressing Enter sends right away, so skip Enter when you want a delay.
- Find scheduled messages under Drafts & sent, then the Scheduled tab.
- Slack's help article lists no keyboard shortcut for scheduling on Mac.
- Thread scheduling and the in-app time limit are not confirmed. Test both before you rely on them.
What you need
- Slack desktop app for Mac, signed in to your workspace
- Permission to post in the channel, DM, or thread
- Mac clock and time zone set correctly
- This page covers the desktop app, not the web app
How to Schedule a message in Slack on Mac in Slack on a Mac
Open the place you want to post
Open the channel, direct message, or thread where the message should appear. Click the message field at the bottom of the window before you type.
Tip: If the message field is missing or greyed out, you may not have permission to post there.
Type your message
Type the full message in the message field. Keep your hand off Enter for now. Pressing Enter sends the message immediately instead of scheduling it.
Tip: Pressing Enter by accident is a common reason a message posts too early.
Click the arrow next to the paper plane
Find the paper plane icon near the message field. Click the small arrow beside it, not the icon itself. The scheduling options open from that arrow.
Choose a time
Pick the time you want the message posted. Read the date and the clock time before you finish. Slack holds the message until that time.
Tip: Check the day as well as the hour, especially for messages set late at night.
Check the Scheduled list
Click Drafts & sent at the top of the sidebar, then select the Scheduled tab. Your message should appear there, not in the channel.
Edit or cancel it if needed
Hover over the scheduled message and open the options the help article describes as editing, deleting and more. Make your change there, then check the Scheduled tab again.
Tip: The help article does not name reschedule or cancel as separate desktop options, so look for those words in the menu.
Scheduling is useful when your working day and your team's day do not line up. You might finish a status update at 9 PM and want it to land at 9 AM. You might want a reminder posted before a meeting starts. Scheduling lets you write now and post later, so you do not have to stay online to hit send.
Before you start: the desktop app and your permissions
This page covers the Slack desktop app on a Mac. Slack's help article Send and read messages describes desktop and mobile steps, and the desktop steps are the ones used here. We did not open a help page for the web version in a browser, so check that separately if you work there. The steps below may not match it.
Check that you can post where you want the message to go. A scheduled message is a normal message with a delayed send time. If the message field is greyed out in a channel, you cannot post there, and you cannot schedule there either. Ask a channel admin or your workspace admin if you are stuck.
Send later in Slack on Mac: which version has it
The official help article does not name a Slack version that added scheduling, and it gives no version numbers at all. The Slack for Mac release notes page lists 4.53.280, dated November 3, 2026, as the latest release we could confirm. That page has no entry that mentions scheduled messages, send later, Drafts, or Later. So the check is simple. If you do not see the arrow next to the paper plane icon, update Slack and look again.
Pick a time and check it before you finish
The time picker is where most scheduling mistakes happen. Read the date and the clock time before you finish. A message set for 9:00 at night looks a lot like one set for 9:00 in the morning. Look at the day too. A message set for Sunday night can look like a Monday message at a glance, and a quick check takes a few seconds.
Worked example: a Friday update for Monday morning
Say it is Friday at 6:40 PM and you finish a project update. You want the channel to see it Monday at 9:00 AM. That is 62 hours and 20 minutes away. You write the message now, click the arrow next to the paper plane icon, and choose Monday at 9:00 AM. The message waits in Scheduled until then. Slack's API documentation sets a 120 day limit for scheduling. A wait of three days is far inside that limit.
Why the Enter key is the most common mistake
Pressing Enter sends a message right away. Slack's help article says so directly, and Enter is the only key the article mentions. It is easy to do this by habit. You type a message, reach for Enter, and post too early. Once it has posted, you cannot schedule that same message. Type the message, pause, and reach for the arrow instead.

How to find, edit, and cancel a scheduled message
Scheduled messages wait in one place. Click Drafts & sent at the top of the sidebar, then select the Scheduled tab. Hover over a message to see its options. The help article describes them as editing, deleting and more. It does not name reschedule or cancel as separate desktop options, so read the menu carefully before you assume a message can be moved.
On iPhone the path is different. From the Home tab, tap Drafts & Sent, then the Scheduled tab. Tap and hold a scheduled message to edit, reschedule, send, cancel, or delete it. The mobile menu names more actions than the desktop hover menu, so do not assume the two match.
Scheduling in threads: what is known and what is not
Here is the honest answer. Slack's official help article does not say whether you can schedule a reply inside a thread on Mac. It does not restrict threads either. Some third party guides say the built in feature works only for top level messages. We could not confirm that claim from Slack's own pages, so treat it as unverified.
Slack's API does support scheduling thread replies. The method takes a thread_ts value, which is the timestamp of the parent message. The docs advise using the parent's timestamp rather than a reply's. A reply_broadcast setting controls whether the reply also shows in the channel. That describes the API, not the Mac app, so test in a thread you own before you schedule an important reply.
How far ahead you can schedule a message
Slack's API documentation says you can schedule a message up to 120 days into the future. A post time beyond that returns a time_too_far error. Counting from November 7, 2026, the 120 day mark falls on March 7, 2027. The help article does not state an in-app limit, so treat 120 days as the documented API ceiling, not a confirmed limit in the Mac app.
Limits on how many messages you can schedule
The API docs say you cannot schedule more than 30 messages to post within a 5 minute window to the same channel. The error is restricted_too_many. That rule is written for apps and bots. People posting by hand will rarely hit it. If you run a script that posts status updates, space the messages out or spread them across channels.
Error messages from Slack's scheduling API
The error names here come from Slack's API docs, not from the Mac app. time_in_past means the time you set is earlier than now. time_too_far means it is beyond the 120 day window. invalid_time means the timestamp is malformed. If a tool schedules messages through Slack for you, match its error text to these names. The Mac app may show different wording, and we did not confirm its messages.
Common mistakes that cost people time
- Pressing Enter before you meant to schedule. Enter sends right away.
- Picking the right hour on the wrong day. Read the date before you finish.
- Looking for a keyboard shortcut. The official help article lists none for scheduling on Mac.
- Looking for a Later label. A third party guide mentions one, but we could not confirm it.
- Scheduling into a thread without a test. Thread support is not confirmed by the help article.
When a scheduled message does not post
Start by checking the Scheduled tab. If the message is still listed, it has not posted yet. If it is gone but you do not see it in the channel, check whether it went to a thread or a different channel. Then check your Mac's clock and time zone, because a wrong clock changes when the message will post.
If you use the API and the message never appeared, check the call for a metadata parameter. Slack's docs warn that messages scheduled with chat.scheduleMessage will not post when that parameter is used. Remove it, then try again with a test message.
Why scheduling helps with after hours work
Slack's Workforce Index, Winter 2023, found that about two in five desk workers, or 37%, log on outside their company's standard hours at least weekly. The survey covered 10,333 desk workers in the U.S., Australia, France, Germany, Japan, and the U.K. Slack commissioned it, so read it as vendor research, not a neutral study.

chat.scheduleMessage method: Slack Developer DocsThe same survey found that 54% of people who log on after hours say they feel pressured to. It also reported that workers who feel obligated to work after hours register 20% lower productivity scores than those who log off. Scheduling does not fix pressure. It does let you send work when it is ready, so your team reads it at a sensible hour.
Good habits for scheduled messages
Write the message in the place you want it posted, and keep it short enough to read on a phone. Check the Scheduled tab the night before if the message matters. If you travel, look at the time shown in the picker, since your Mac's clock and settings decide what you see. Do not rely on memory alone.
Next steps after your first scheduled message
Once you can schedule, the next question is usually how to start the conversation. Read how to start a new message in Slack on Mac for the sidebar and keyboard routes. If it does not work
- The arrow next to the paper plane is not there
- Update Slack, then check again. The release notes page lists 4.53.280 as the latest confirmed Mac build, dated November 3, 2026. The page does not say which version added scheduling, so we cannot name a minimum build.
- The message posted as soon as I typed it
- Enter sends right away, so the message was sent, not scheduled. Next time, use the arrow next to the paper plane icon and leave Enter alone until the message is ready to go.
- The Scheduled tab is empty
- Check that you are in Drafts & sent, then the Scheduled tab. Make sure you scheduled the message in this workspace. A message that has already posted leaves the Scheduled list.
- A scheduled thread reply did not post
- The help article does not confirm thread support. Post a test reply in a thread you own, schedule it a few minutes ahead, and check the result before you rely on it.
- A scheduled bot message never posted
- If you use the API, check the call for a metadata parameter. Slack's docs say messages scheduled with chat.scheduleMessage will not post when metadata is used. Remove it and try again.
- The API returns time_too_far or restricted_too_many
- time_too_far means the time is past the 120 day window. restricted_too_many means more than 30 messages to one channel in a 5 minute window. Pick an earlier time or spread the messages out.

Questions people ask
Is there a keyboard shortcut to schedule a message in Slack on Mac?
Not one that Slack's official help article lists. The article names Enter as the only key it mentions, and Enter sends right away. Third party guides mention shortcuts, but we could not confirm them, so use the arrow next to the paper plane icon.
Can I schedule a message in a thread on Mac?
Slack's help article does not say. Some third party guides say the built in feature works only for top level messages, which we could not confirm. Test it in a thread you own before you depend on it.
How far in advance can I schedule a message?
Slack's API documentation sets a limit of 120 days, and a later time returns a time_too_far error. The Mac help article does not state an in-app limit. If you plan to go close to 120 days, check the Scheduled tab afterward.
Can I edit or cancel a scheduled message on Mac?
Yes. Click Drafts & sent, select the Scheduled tab, and hover over the message. The help article describes the options as editing, deleting and more. It does not name reschedule or cancel as separate desktop options.
Can I schedule a message from my iPhone?
Yes, according to Slack's help article. From the Home tab, tap Drafts & Sent, then the Scheduled tab. Tap and hold a scheduled message to edit, reschedule, send, cancel, or delete it.
Why did my message post right away?
You probably pressed Enter. In the desktop app, Enter sends the message immediately instead of scheduling it. To schedule, skip Enter and use the arrow next to the paper plane icon.
Do these steps cover Slack in a web browser?
No. The steps on this page are for the Slack desktop app on a Mac. We did not open a web app help page, so check the web version separately before you rely on these steps.
