How to Set your status in Slack on Mac in Slack on a Mac
Open your profile picture
In the Slack desktop app, look at the sidebar and click your profile picture. The menu that opens holds your current status, your availability, and your preferences.
Tip: Press Escape to close the menu if you opened it by mistake.
Click Update your status
Click the Update your status field. A box opens where you type text and choose an emoji. If you already have a status, use the editing steps further down instead.
Tip: The field is the fastest route for a new status.
Type your status text
Type a short line that tells colleagues what you are doing and when you will reply. Plain words work better than jokes, because people scan statuses quickly.
Tip: Put the reply timing first, such as back after lunch.
Choose an emoji or a suggested status
Pick an emoji from the status box, or click a suggested status if one fits. If you do not pick an emoji, Slack shows a speech balloon, 💬, by default.
Tip: A specific emoji is easier to spot than the default balloon.
Set when the status clears
Click the Remove status after option and choose a time from the list. When that time passes, Slack clears the status for you.
Tip: Choose a clear time for anything that ends on its own.
Pause notifications if you need quiet
Tick Pause notifications only if you want Slack to stop sending alerts while the status is on. Leave it empty if you still want alerts.
Tip: This box is optional, so skip it for a normal status.
Click Save
Click Save. Your new status is live. Open the profile menu again to check the text, emoji, and time before you go back to work.
Tip: A quick check now avoids a wrong status all afternoon.
Use the keyboard shortcut instead
⌘⇧ Y
Press ⌘ ⇧ Y from the Slack window to open the status box without going to the sidebar. Fill in the text, emoji, and time as above, then click Save.
Tip: Click inside the Slack window first if the shortcut does nothing.
Clear your status
Click your profile picture and choose Clear status. The current status is removed. To remove a scheduled status instead, hover over it under Scheduled and click the delete icon.
Tip: Clear status only affects the status you have now.
A Slack status is the short line and emoji that sit on your profile. It tells colleagues what you are doing and when you might reply. It is easy to set one once and then forget it. Later that week it still says you are in a meeting. This guide walks through the desktop steps on a Mac, the keyboard shortcut, and the settings that clear or schedule a status on their own.
Set your status in the Slack desktop app
Slack's Help Center covers status in one article about the desktop app, and the steps in this guide follow it. The Slack app you install on a Mac is that desktop app. The article does not list separate Mac steps, so the menu and button names here are the ones it uses. If your screen looks slightly different after an update, check the Mac release notes section further down.

What you need before you start
- The Slack app for Mac installed on your computer, not only the website.
- A workspace you can sign in to with your own account.
- An internet connection, because the status is saved to your Slack account.
- A short plan for the text you want, so you can type it in one go.
Pick the text, emoji, and clear time
Good status text is short and specific. It should answer the question colleagues ask most, which is whether you can reply now and for how long. “In a meeting, back after lunch” tells people more than “busy”. The emoji is a quick visual cue. If you skip it, Slack shows a speech balloon, 💬, by default, so choose one if you want a clearer signal.
| Status text | Emoji | Clear it when |
|---|---|---|
| In a meeting, back after lunch | 📅 | After lunch |
| Heads down on the report | 🎯 | End of the working day |
| Commuting, slow to reply | 🚆 | When the commute ends |
Always set a clear time when you can. A status with an end point clears by itself, and you do not need to remember to change it. Use the Remove status after option in the status box to pick the time before you click Save.
A worked example for a busy afternoon
Say you are heading into a long review and want colleagues to know you will reply later. Click your profile picture, then click Update your status. Type “In review, will reply after the call” and choose a calendar emoji. Set the clear time to the end of the day. Leave Pause notifications off if you still want alerts. Click Save, then open the profile menu once to confirm the text and the time.
Use the keyboard shortcut when you are in a hurry
Press ⌘ ⇧ Y to set your status from the keyboard. ⌘ is Command, ⇧ is Shift, and Y is the letter key. Slack's keyboard shortcut list gives this combination for setting your status. It is the quickest way to open the status box without reaching for the sidebar.
Keyboard shortcuts go to the app in front of you, so click inside the Slack window first if nothing happens. The Command key has a looped square on it, and the Shift key has an up arrow. Check those symbols if the shortcut seems to do nothing.

Schedule a status for later
Scheduling helps when you know the dates ahead of time, such as a conference week or a planned leave. Open your profile picture, click Update your status, and enter the text and emoji. Open the Duration drop-down, choose Choose a start and end time, select the start and end dates, and click Save.
- Check both dates before you click Save, because a wrong date is easy to miss.
- Slack allows up to five scheduled statuses at a time, so plan with that limit in mind.
- Find scheduled statuses under Scheduled in the profile menu.
- Hover over a scheduled status and click the delete icon to remove it.

A scheduled status does not replace a clear time on a normal status. Use scheduling for a known block of time, and use Remove status after for everyday statuses that end on their own.
Edit or clear a status you already set
To change a status, click your profile picture, then click the current status. Change the text, the emoji, or the clear time, and click Save. To remove a status, click your profile picture and click Clear status. Clear status is the fastest way to remove the status you have now.
Away, active, and automatic statuses
Slack sets you to away after 10 minutes of desktop inactivity. That default is separate from the status text you write. To override it, click your profile picture and choose Set yourself as active or Set yourself as away. Your custom status and your availability are two settings, so change each one on its own.
Automatic statuses cover things like huddles, focus mode, and time after working hours. To check or change them, click your profile picture, choose Preferences, and open Automatic statuses. Look there if your status changes by itself and you did not set it.
37%
of desk workers log on outside their company's standard hours at least weekly
The surprising connection between after-hours work and decreased productivity (Slack blog)That number explains why a status helps. About two in five desk workers said they log on outside their company's standard hours at least weekly. A clear status tells colleagues whether you can reply now or later, which saves them a guess. The survey covered 10,333 workers in six countries and was published December 5, 2023.
Common mistakes with Slack status on Mac
- Setting a status with no clear time, so it stays on long after the reason has passed.
- Writing a vague status such as busy, which does not say when you will reply.
- Assuming Pause notifications also changes your status text. It only pauses alerts.
- Scheduling a status and forgetting it. Scheduled statuses run on the dates you chose.
- Pressing the shortcut while another app is in front. Click the Slack window first.
- Setting active and expecting your custom status to change. The two settings are separate.
When your status will not save or clear
Slack's Help Center does not have a dedicated troubleshooting article for a status that will not save. The advice here is general, not from Slack. Start with the basics. Check that you clicked Save, confirm the status box closed, and reopen the profile menu to see what it shows.
If the Slack app still behaves oddly, MacPaw's guide to speeding up Slack on a Mac describes clearing the cache. Quit Slack, open the Help menu, and choose Troubleshooting > Clear Cache and Restart. If that option fails, delete the contents of ~/Library/Caches/com.tinyspeck.slackmacgap through Finder with ⇧⌘G, then restart the Mac. This path comes from MacPaw, not Slack, and menu wording can vary between versions.
Keep Slack for Mac up to date
Slack publishes Mac release notes for each version. The entries dated October 29, 2026 and November 3, 2026 cover versions 4.53.276 and 4.53.280. Neither mentions status, profile, or menu changes. If the steps here do not match your screen, update Slack and compare the menu again.
Set status in the Slack web app
Slack's official status article covers the desktop app and does not give separate web app steps. A third-party guide says the web version works the same way, but this page could not confirm it. On a Mac, follow the desktop steps above, and test the web version before you rely on it.
