How to start a huddle in Slack on Mac: desktop steps and shortcut for 2026
To start a huddle in Slack on Mac, open a channel or direct message and click the headphones icon at the top of the conversation. You can also press ⌘⇧H, which starts, joins, leaves or ends a huddle.

- Open a channel or direct message, then click the headphones icon at the top of the conversation.
- In a direct message, the other person has to click Join in the pop-up before they can get in.
- Press ⌘⇧H to start a huddle from the keyboard. The same shortcut also leaves or ends one, so check first.
- Free plans allow 2 participants in a huddle. Paid plans allow up to 50, with 25 on video at once.
What you need
- Slack desktop app for Mac, or Slack in Google Chrome or Firefox

- Free plan: 2 participants per huddle. Paid plan: up to 50
How to Start a huddle in Slack on Mac in Slack on a Mac
Open the conversation
Open the channel or direct message where you want the huddle. The huddle starts in that conversation, so pick the right one first.
Click the headphones icon
Look at the top of the conversation and click the headphones icon. The huddle window opens.
Tip: If you can't find the icon, confirm you are in a channel or DM, then check the release notes for your version.
Wait for the other person in a DM
In a direct message, the other person sees a pop-up and clicks Join. Until they do, the huddle has no one else in it.
Or press the shortcut
⌘⇧H
Press ⌘⇧H to start a huddle without the mouse. The same shortcut joins, leaves or ends a huddle, so check the window first.
Invite people
Click Invite people at the bottom of the huddle window. Choose the people you want, then click Send Invite.
Turn on video
Click the camera icon at the bottom of the huddle window to turn on video. Plug in any external camera before you start, because plugging in mid-huddle can stop video.
Share your screen
Click the share screen icon. Choose a screen, window or app. Optionally turn on system audio, then click Share.
Copy the huddle link
Click the arrow next to the headphones icon and select Copy huddle link. Paste the link where your teammates will see it.
Leave when you are done
Click Leave to exit. Anyone can leave at any time. The huddle ends when the last person leaves.
Start from the conversation you want. The huddle opens in that channel or direct message, so pick the right one first. The steps below use the Slack desktop app for Mac.

Slack for Mac: Release NotesWhat you need before you start a huddle
You can start a huddle from the Slack desktop app on Mac. Huddles also work in Google Chrome on Mac, Windows and Linux, and in Firefox on Mac and Windows. Slack's help article covers those options without separate web app steps, so this guide sticks to the desktop app.
Check your version too. Slack's release notes list 4.53.280 as the latest stable Mac release, dated November 3, 2026. The huddle help article does not list version numbers, so the release notes are the place to compare.
- The Slack desktop app for Mac, open and signed in to your workspace.
- A channel or direct message where you can start a huddle.
- Microphone access for Slack in the macOS privacy settings.
- Camera access for Slack, if you plan to turn on video.
- Your plan limits in mind. The free plan allows 2 participants per huddle.
Start a huddle from a channel
Open the channel. Look at the top of the conversation for the headphones icon. Click it, and the huddle window opens on your screen. You are now in the huddle.
From the huddle window you can invite people, turn on video, share your screen or copy a link. Those controls are covered in the sections below.
Start a huddle in a direct message
Direct messages work a little differently. Open the conversation with the person, then click the headphones icon at the top. The other person sees a pop-up and clicks Join to get in.
Until they click Join, the huddle has only you in it. Send a short message first if you need them quickly, so they know to watch for the pop-up.

Use the keyboard shortcut instead
Press ⌘⇧H, which means Command, Shift and H together. Slack uses the same shortcut to join a huddle that is already running. It also leaves or ends a huddle, so it does more than start one.
That overlap is the main risk. Check which huddle you are in before you press it. If you are already in a huddle, one press can take you out.
| Action on Mac | Keys | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Start, join, leave or end a huddle | ⌘⇧H | Starts a huddle, or joins, leaves or ends the one you are in |
| Mute or unmute during a huddle | ⌘⇧Space | Toggles mute for your mic |
Slack's full keyboard list lives in the app. See how to show keyboard shortcuts in Slack on Mac for those steps.
What the huddle window controls do
The huddle window has several icons. Most sit at the bottom. Here is what each one does, based on Slack's help article.
- Camera icon: click it at the bottom of the window to turn on video.
- Invite people icon: opens the invite picker. Choose people, then click Send Invite.
- Share screen icon: choose a screen, window or app, optionally enable system audio, then click Share.
- Three-dots icon: shows more options, including Copy huddle link and Test Speaker.
- Leave: exits the huddle for you. Anyone can leave at any time.
Keep this list nearby for your first few huddles. The icons are small, and the names help you find them fast.
Invite people and copy a huddle link
Click Invite people at the bottom of the huddle window. Pick the people you want. Then click Send Invite. Check the names before you send.
If you would rather share a link, skip the invite step. Copy the huddle link and paste it into a DM, a channel or another app where your teammates will see it.
There are two ways to get the link. Outside a huddle, click the arrow next to the headphones icon and select Copy huddle link. Inside a huddle, click the three-dots icon at the bottom of the window and select Copy huddle link.
Share your screen during a huddle
Click the share screen icon during a huddle. Pick a screen, window or app from the list. Turn on system audio if people need to hear sound from what you share. Then click Share.
Two people can share at once. Drawing on a shared screen works in the Mac and Windows desktop apps. Share the whole screen when people need the full context. Share one window when you only need one document.
If a shared screen does not show up on macOS 10.15, enable Slack under Screen Recording. Then quit Slack and open it again.
A worked example: a quick check-in with one teammate
Say you want a 15 minute call with a teammate on the free plan. You open your direct message with them. You click the headphones icon at the top. They see the pop-up and click Join. That makes two people, which is the free plan limit.
Now say a third person wants in. On the free plan, they cannot join. You can copy the huddle link, but the limit still applies. A paid plan raises the limit to 50 participants.
If you share a spreadsheet during the call, click the share screen icon. Choose the window with the file, then click Share. Your teammate sees that one window, and the free plan still allows two people to share at once.
Check your mic, camera and speakers
Run an audio test before a call that matters. Click your profile picture and select Preferences. Click Audio & video, then under Troubleshooting click Run test.
During a huddle, click the three-dots icon and choose Test Speaker. That checks speaker output from inside the huddle, so it is a good second check.
Slack lists the audio test for the desktop app and for Slack in Chrome only. If you use another browser, check the mic in that browser's own settings.
Give Slack microphone and camera access on macOS
If people can't hear you, check the macOS privacy settings. Slack's help article gives this path: System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Microphone. Check the box next to Slack.
If the box is already checked, uncheck it, then check it again. That is the fix Slack suggests for the permission problem.
Slack's article uses the older System Preferences name. Newer versions of macOS may label that pane differently. Look for Privacy, then Microphone. Camera works the same way, so select Camera and check Slack there too.
Limits on the free plan and paid plans
| Plan | Max participants | Video at once | Screen sharing at once |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 2 | Not listed | 2 |
| Paid | Up to 50 | Up to 25 | 2 |
Those numbers decide who can join. On the free plan, a third person cannot get into a huddle. Upgrading changes that, but only if your workspace is on a paid plan.
Frontline Members can join huddles but cannot start them. If that is your role, ask a teammate who can start the huddle, then join it from the conversation.
Live captions are available only in English. Slack does not save them after the huddle ends. If you need a record of a call, take your own notes during it.
Leave a huddle and end it
Click Leave to exit. Anyone can leave at any time, including the person who started the huddle. The huddle ends automatically when the last person leaves.
Fix huddle connection problems on Mac
Most huddle problems come from audio, camera or network settings. Start with the quickest fix, then move down the troubleshooting list.
If the desktop app won't connect, try a different route. Slack's help says to start a huddle in Google Chrome, or use the mobile app on the same Wi-Fi network. That tells you whether the problem is the app or the network.
Firewalls are the other common cause. Slack's help article says huddle network paths must be allowed through your firewall. On a work Mac, that change may need your IT team.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Clicking the headphones icon in a DM, then waiting. The other person still has to click Join.
- Plugging in a camera during a huddle. Slack says this can stop video, so plug it in first.
- Looking for the link on the headphones icon. Use the arrow next to it.
- Pressing ⌘⇧H in the wrong call. The same shortcut can leave a huddle.
- Skipping the audio test before an important call. Run it a little early, not in the first minute.
What to do next
Huddle alerts can interrupt focus time. If that happens, see how to pause notifications in Slack on Mac for the profile menu steps.
If teammates need to know you are on a call, update your status first. The steps are in how to set status in Slack on Mac.
If you are catching up after a call, check what you missed first. How to view unread messages in Slack on Mac shows the steps.

If it does not work
- Nobody can hear you in the huddle
- Quit Slack and reopen it. If that fails, restart your Mac. Then run the audio test from your profile picture, under Preferences and Audio & video, before you join again.
- Video isn't showing
- Plug in an external camera before you start the huddle. Slack says plugging one in during a huddle can stop video.
- Mic stops working after you use another calling app
- Re-grant Slack microphone access in the Microphone pane under Privacy, then try the huddle again.
- Shared screen doesn't show on macOS 10.15
- Enable Slack under Screen Recording, then quit and reopen the app. Share your screen again after it restarts.
- Huddle won't connect in the desktop app
- Work through the connection steps in the section above, starting with Google Chrome or the mobile app on the same Wi-Fi network.
- You can't find the headphones icon
- Open the channel or DM again and check the top of the conversation, where Slack's help places the icon. If it is still missing, update Slack and check the release notes.

Questions people ask
Can I start a huddle in Slack on Mac without the desktop app?
Yes. Huddles work in Google Chrome and in Firefox on Mac, and in the Slack mobile apps. The steps in this guide use the desktop app because Slack's help article does not list separate web app steps.
Why doesn't the other person see my huddle in a direct message?
They have to click Join in the pop-up that appears on their side. Slack's help article describes the DM flow that way. Ask them to watch for the pop-up after you click the headphones icon.
How many people can join a huddle on Mac?
Free plans allow 2 participants. Paid plans allow up to 50, with up to 25 able to use video at once. Two people can share their screens at the same time on any plan.
Can I start a huddle with a keyboard shortcut?
Yes. Press ⌘⇧H, which is Command, Shift and H. The same shortcut joins, leaves or ends a huddle, so check the window before you press it.
Are live captions saved after a huddle ends?
No. Slack says live captions are available only in English and are not saved after the huddle ends. Take your own notes if you need a record of the call.
Why can I join a huddle but not start one?
Frontline Members can join huddles but cannot start them. If that is your role, ask a teammate who can start the huddle, then join it from the conversation.
Which Slack version should I check on Mac?
Slack's release notes list 4.53.280 as the latest stable Mac release, dated November 3, 2026. Compare your version with the release notes page, then update Slack if you are behind.
