How to undo send in Gmail on Mac: steps for the browser and Apple Mail
To undo send in Gmail on Mac, click Undo in the Message sent bar at the bottom left right after you send. If the bar has already gone, Gmail cannot recall the message, so set a longer window in Settings > See all settings now.

Quick answer
- Right after you click Send, click Undo in the Message sent bar at the bottom left of the Gmail window.
- For more time, go to Settings > See all settings, pick 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds next to Undo Send, then click Save changes.
- If you send through Apple Mail, its own undo lives in Mail > Settings > Composing, with a default of 10 seconds.
- Once the window closes, Gmail cannot recall a delivered message, so set the longer window before you need it.
What you need
- Gmail open in a browser on your Mac, or Apple Mail set up with your Gmail account
- Gmail keyboard shortcuts turned on, only if you want to use the z key
How to Undo a sent Gmail message on a Mac in Gmail on a Mac
Click Undo in the Message sent bar
Right after you click Send, look at the bottom left of the Gmail window. A bar says Message sent and shows two links, Undo and View message. Click Undo before the bar goes away, and the message stops before it leaves.
Tip: The bar only shows for the window you chose. If you miss it, use the next steps to make the window longer.
Open Gmail settings
In Gmail in your browser, click Settings at the top right. Then choose See all settings. The full settings page opens, and you can scroll through every option.
Choose a window for Undo Send
Scroll until you see Undo Send. Next to it, choose 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds. Pick 20 or 30 seconds if you often notice mistakes a few seconds after you click Send.
Tip: Five seconds only works if you look at the bar every single time.
Save the new window
Scroll to the bottom of the settings page and click Save changes. If you skip this step, Gmail keeps the old window. Close the settings page when you are done.
Test the window with a message to yourself
Write a short note to your own address. Send it, watch the bottom left of the window, and click Undo. Check that you can edit the message again, so you know the setting works.
Tip: Delete the test message afterward so it does not clutter your inbox.
Turn on keyboard shortcuts for z
z
Gmail keyboard shortcuts stay off until you turn them on. Open Settings, choose See all settings, select Keyboard shortcuts on, and click Save Changes. Google lists z as Undo last action, but it does not say z reverses a sent message.
Open Mail's Composing settings
If you send Gmail through Apple's Mail app, open Mail, choose Settings, and click the Composing tab. Find the Undo send delay pop-up menu under Sending. Apple's default is 10 seconds.
Tip: Apple's page does not list the values. MacRumors names 20 and 30 seconds as alternatives, so check the pop-up on your Mac.
Use Undo Send in Mail's sidebar
After you send from Mail, click Undo Send at the bottom of the sidebar. With the default setting you have 10 seconds, so act at once.
Use Edit > Undo as a backup in Mail
If the sidebar button has gone, you can still choose Edit > Undo in Mail. Do not count on it after the delay has passed, because Apple's steps tie the undo to the short window.
Undo Send in Gmail on Mac: the Message sent bar
Gmail holds a sent message for a short time before it is final. Google's help page puts it this way: if you decide you do not want to send an email, you have a short time after to cancel it. The bar appears at the bottom left of the Gmail page. It says Message sent and offers two links, Undo and View message. Click Undo while the bar is still there.
The bar only stays for the window you chose. Most people never see it, because they glance away the moment they click Send. Make the glance a habit. A wrong attachment, a missing name, or a reply sent to the whole thread are the usual catches.

Google lets you choose how long the window stays open. On a computer, the choices are 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds. You change the length in Gmail's settings, not in the bar. Open the settings once and look at the Undo Send choice before you rely on it.
Five seconds is enough only if you watch the bar every time. If you turn to answer a colleague or pick up your phone, the bar may be gone. Ten seconds is a reasonable middle. Twenty or 30 seconds gives you more room.

| 20 seconds | 20 seconds |
| 30 seconds | 30 seconds |

Pick the longest window you can live with. The cost is a short pause before each message leaves Gmail. For a batch of quick replies, that pause is easy to live with. For a single client email, it hardly matters. Thirty seconds gives you the most room to catch a mistake.
A timing example you can test
Here is a simple way to think about it. Suppose you send ten replies in a row, each with a quick glance before Send. With a 5 second window, you get five seconds to catch each slip. With 30 seconds, you get six times as long. That gap is the difference between a bar you can read and a bar you already missed.
Think of the window as a trade. A longer window gives you more room, and each message waits longer before it leaves. A short pause is harmless for a quick reply. It is more annoying when you are sending a batch of invoices and every one must go out now.

If you often switch tabs right after you click Send, 20 or 30 seconds fits your habits better than 5. Test the setting once with a message to yourself, then leave it alone.

Apple Mail has its own Undo Send
Some people read Gmail in Apple's Mail app rather than in a browser. If you do, the undo you see belongs to Mail. Apple says that after you send, you can click Undo Send at the bottom of the sidebar within 10 seconds. You can also choose Edit > Undo.
The two timers are separate. Changing Gmail's window does nothing to Mail, and changing Mail's delay does nothing to the Gmail web page. A third-party site says the Gmail bar does not apply to messages sent through Mail. Google's pages do not say this, so test it first.
A community answer on Apple's forums says you can set the Mail delay to Off on a Mac. That removes the safety net. Keep the default unless you are sure you never want a pause.
Is there an official Gmail app for Mac?
Most people use Gmail in a browser on a Mac. A Mac blog that sells a competing app says there has never been an official Gmail app for Mac. Google's pages do not state that directly, so treat the claim as likely, not confirmed.
If you want Gmail in its own window, you can install the web version as a Chrome app. Chrome's help page describes the steps, and the install option sits under More.
- Open Gmail in Chrome and sign in.
- Click More at the top right of Chrome.
- Choose Cast, save, and share, then Install page as app.
- Confirm the install and open Gmail from its new app window.
The installed app shows the same Gmail page, so the Message sent bar should appear there too. Check it with a test message before you rely on it.
What you cannot undo
Once the window closes, Gmail cannot recall a delivered message. Google's help page describes a cancellation period and no recall after it. If the other person has already read the message, you cannot take that back. Your only real fix is a short, honest follow-up.
A worked example from start to finish
Say you send a reply with the wrong file attached. The bar appears at the bottom left. You click Undo, and the message stops before it leaves. You swap the file, check the To line, and click Send again. The fix takes seconds.
Now take the same mistake after the window has closed. The message is gone. You write a short follow-up that names the file, attaches the right one, and asks the reader to ignore the first message. It works, but it looks worse than a quiet fix would have.
Edge cases that catch people out
- Reply-all in a long thread. Replies copy the thread's people, so one click on Send can reach a whole group. Check the To and Cc lines before you send.
- Forwards to a new address. You type the address yourself, which makes a typo easy. Read the address once more before you click Send.
- Attachments added at the last second. The file may be the wrong version. Open the attachment list before you click Send.
- Several Gmail windows open. The bar appears in the window where you clicked Send. Look at that window, not the one in front of you.
If the message is already gone
Write a short correction that names the problem and gives the fix. For example: Sorry, I sent the wrong file a moment ago. Please ignore that message and use the attachment in this one. Keep it to two sentences. A long apology draws more attention than the error did.
Pick the reply that fits the stakes. A wrong file in a team thread needs a line. A wrong figure in a client quote may need a call as well. Undo Send cannot fix either one after the window closes.
Mistakes people make with Undo Send
- Looking away right after you click Send. The bar lasts only as long as the window you chose.
- Changing the setting and skipping Save changes. Nothing changes until you click it.
- Assuming Apple Mail and Gmail share one timer. They are separate features.
- Trusting z without a test. Google does not say it reverses a sent message.
- Sending a reply-all by mistake. Check the To and Cc lines before you click Send.
Mistakes like these are common. A 2021 Tessian survey of 2,000 working professionals found that two in five, or 40%, had sent work emails to the wrong person. Half of the employees cited time pressure as the reason. The survey was commissioned by a vendor, so read it as a signal, not a precise count.

A short routine for every send that matters
Build a short pause into your sending. Read the To line, then the subject, then the first sentence of the body. Only then click Send. The routine takes a few seconds, and it catches most of the errors that Undo Send is meant for.
Keep the Gmail tab in front for a moment after you send. That keeps the bar where you can see it. If you move to another window, come back to the tab before the bar fades.
Mac versions matter a little. Apple's Mail guide lists macOS 27, Tahoe 26 and Sequoia 15 in its version menu. Apple's Undo Send section was only partly available when this page was checked, so menu names may differ on your Mac.
What to do next
Set the window today, send yourself one test message, then forget about it until you need it. For a busy inbox, the Gmail on Mac guide covers more of the daily tasks.

If it does not work
- The Message sent bar disappeared before I clicked Undo.
- The window ended. Raise it to 30 seconds under Settings > See all settings, click Save changes, then test with a message to yourself.
- I changed Undo Send, but nothing changed.
- Click Save changes at the bottom of the settings page. Reload Gmail, then check the Undo Send choice again.
- I cannot find Undo Send in Gmail.
- Google's steps say Settings, then See all settings. Layouts and browsers vary, so scroll the settings page until you see Undo Send.
- The z key did not undo my sent email.
- Google documents z as Undo last action but does not say it reverses a sent message. Use the Message sent bar instead, and turn on keyboard shortcuts first if z does nothing.
- Undo Send does not work in Apple Mail.
- Apple's Undo Send works only within the delay, which defaults to 10 seconds. Check Mail > Settings > Composing, and use Edit > Undo while the window is open.

Questions people ask
Can I undo send in Gmail on Mac after the Message sent bar disappears?
Usually not. Google's help page describes a short time to cancel, and it does not describe any recall after that window closes. Once the window ends, treat the message as sent and send a correction if you need to fix it.
How long can I make the Undo Send window?
On a computer, Gmail lets you choose 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds. Go to Settings > See all settings, pick the length next to Undo Send, and click Save changes at the bottom of the page.
Is there a keyboard shortcut for Undo Send in Gmail on Mac?
Google's shortcut list does not name one for Undo Send. The z key is documented as Undo last action, but Google does not say it reverses a sent message. Test it before you rely on it.
Why does Gmail's undo bar not show when I send from Apple Mail?
If you send from Apple Mail, the undo you see is Mail's own feature. Look for Undo Send at the bottom of the sidebar, or choose Edit > Undo, within 10 seconds. Change the delay in Mail > Settings > Composing.
Is there an official Gmail app for Mac?
A Mac blog that sells a competing app says there has never been one. Google's pages do not say that directly. The browser works well, and you can install Gmail as a Chrome app if you want its own window.
How often do people send email to the wrong person?
A 2021 Tessian survey of 2,000 working professionals found two in five, or 40%, had sent work emails to the wrong person. Half of employees cited time pressure. The survey was commissioned by a vendor, so use it as a signal only.
Does Undo Send work the same on my iPhone?
This page covers Mac only. Google's help page has iPhone and Android tabs but gives no mobile timings, so check the settings on your phone directly before you rely on them.
