Typeless alternatives for Mac in 2026: five dictation apps compared on price and privacy
If you want a Typeless alternative on Mac, four apps are worth a close look: Lazur, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and Aqua Voice. Each one trades something. Typeless covers the most platforms and cleans up speech well. The others differ on price, on where your audio is processed, and on whether you want a voice assistant or only a dictation tool.

Why people look for a Typeless alternative on Mac
Typeless is a capable dictation app. Its homepage lists removal of filler words, fixes for mid-sentence changes, automatic list formatting and tone changes for each app you use. People still go looking for something else, usually for three reasons. The first is price. The second is privacy, because Typeless processes audio on cloud servers. The third is scope. Some people want a voice assistant that answers questions and runs everyday tasks, not only a dictation tool.
This page compares five apps: Lazur, Typeless, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and Aqua Voice. Typeless is the reference point here, not a verdict against it. Lazur facts come from Lazur's own product notes. Competitor facts come from each company's site, and reviews are labeled as reviews.

How to read the prices on this page
Each price is copied from the app's pricing page, as checked on 2026-11-07. Prices change, so check the page before you pay. Two prices need extra care. Superwhisper's pricing page returned an error when checked, so its paid price reads See their pricing page. Aqua Voice's plan cards show no amounts, so its figures come from the text on its pricing FAQ.
Monthly and annual prices differ. Compare the same billing term when you line up two apps.
Some prices are per user. Wispr Flow's Pro price is per user per month, so a team bill grows with headcount.
Free plans have limits. Check how many words you get before you rely on one for a full week.
Trials differ. Lazur's Pro trial lasts 3 days and needs no credit card.
Lazur: a voice assistant that sees your screen
Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac that lives in the notch. Hold ⌥ ⌘, which is Option plus Command, and ask about anything on screen. Lazur answers out loud. Ask where something is, and Lazur draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to do something, and it guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click.
Lazur does not click buttons, edit files or operate other apps for you. That is the main difference from dictation apps such as Typeless or Wispr Flow. Those apps put text at your cursor. Lazur explains and points. If you only dictate, the difference may not matter. If you often ask how to do something in an unfamiliar app, it does.
Dictation is included. Hold fn to dictate clean, formatted text at the cursor in any app. You also get snippets, a personal dictionary and clipboard slots. Lazur's core is help with what is on your screen, plus everyday actions such as timers, Apple Reminders, Calendar events, notes and music.
Lazur has real limits. It runs on macOS only, on Apple silicon and Intel. Windows is planned, not available. Its product notes do not describe an offline mode. Pro includes 150 AI actions, and Power includes 1,000. Dictation is unlimited on both plans.
Typeless: strong cleanup and the widest platform list
Typeless is the app most people on this list compare against, so start here. Its homepage describes automatic removal of filler words and repeated phrases. It also fixes mid-sentence changes, formats lists and adapts tone for each app. It supports 100+ languages with auto-detection. Voice editing lets you select text and ask for a change.
Its platform list is the widest here. Typeless lists macOS, Windows and Linux on desktop, and iOS and Android on mobile. Its Pro plan is $12 per member per month billed yearly, or $30 when billed monthly, with unlimited words. The homepage also says dictation is about 4x faster than typing, citing 220 wpm against 45 wpm for QWERTY typing. That is the company's own claim, not an independent test.
Read the privacy wording closely. The homepage says dictation data is never used for model training by Typeless or any third party. The privacy policy says no voice recordings or screen context data are stored on its servers. It also says audio is processed in real time on cloud servers, and it may send audio and text to third-party AI providers, including Microsoft and Google. Text history is stored only if History cloud sync is on.
Typeless fits you if you want strong cleanup and one app across Mac, Windows and phones. It fits less well if audio must stay on your Mac. Test it with a real paragraph from your own work before you decide.
Wispr Flow: a generous free tier and cross-platform dictation
Wispr Flow has the largest published free allowance on this list. Its homepage lists a free plan of 2,000 words per week. Its pricing page lists Pro at $15/user/mo monthly or $12/user/mo annual, with unlimited dictations. The same page says annual billing gives a 20% discount.
Dictation works on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. The pricing page says Notetaker is Mac and Windows only for now. Linux is not mentioned on the homepage, so do not plan around it.
Wispr Flow says transcription always happens in the cloud. Audio is deleted as soon as it is transcribed, unless you turn on Dictation cloud storage. The homepage lists SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and ISO 27001 certifications, and says your data is never sold.
Model training is the point to check yourself. The pricing page says you can opt out at any time. A tl;dv review, written by a meeting-notes competitor, says Flow trains on your data by default on Free and Pro. The sources disagree, and the notes do not settle it. Look for the model training option in the app settings, and turn it off if you want certainty.
Superwhisper: local models that keep audio on your Mac
Superwhisper is the app to test first if audio must not leave your Mac. Its privacy policy says that when you use a local model, your audio and transcripts never leave your device. Cloud models process audio in memory, and nothing is stored after the request completes. The homepage lists offline transcription.
The homepage also lists custom vocabulary, modes such as Voice, Message, Email, Formal, Casual, Legal and Chat, 100+ languages, file transcription and model choice. Its meeting assistant is listed as Mac only in the pricing table.
Pricing is the gap in this section. The superwhisper.com pricing page returned an error when checked. The homepage shows a Free plan at $0 and a Pro plan at $849 with no currency, which looks like a typo. Do not budget from that number. Open the pricing page yourself and read the figure.
Retention is clear on paper. Server logs are kept 30 days, and crash and error reports up to 90 days. Local recordings and history are kept until you delete them, by default.
Aqua Voice: Deep Context, technical terms and Privacy Mode
Aqua Voice is the app to weigh if you dictate code, product names or other technical terms. A SoftOrbits review, written by a company that makes a competing product, calls Aqua especially strong on code and technical terms. The homepage lists live refinement, a custom dictionary, writing styles, Edit Mode, Realtime Mode, Deep Context, and MCP, CLI and API access.
The company's own benchmark puts its Avalon model at 97.4% key-term accuracy, against 65.1% for Whisper Large v3. That is Aqua's test, not an independent one. Aqua supports 49 languages and lists macOS, Windows, iOS and Android. The old withaqua.com address redirects to aquavoice.com.
Aqua publishes specific plan prices in its FAQ. Free is $0 to start, with 1,000 words. Pro is $10 / month billed annually, or $12 / month month-to-month. Max is $19 / month billed annually, or $24 / month month-to-month. Business is $19 / seat / month billed annually, with a minimum of 2 seats. Students get 70% off Pro and Max with a school email.
Privacy depends on one setting. With Privacy Mode off, Aqua stores dictation audio and transcripts on its servers, with no fixed deletion period. With Privacy Mode on, it does not store them. Notetaker meeting audio is stored even with Privacy Mode on. The privacy policy does not mention model training.
Price comparison: confirmed Pro plans side by side
The chart shows the annual monthly price of each Pro plan with a confirmed figure. Superwhisper is left out because its price is not confirmed. On annual price alone, Lazur costs more than the other three.
Read the chart with the limits in mind. Typeless and Wispr Flow count dictation as unlimited on Pro. Lazur includes 150 AI actions on Pro and 1,000 on Power, with unlimited dictation on both. Aqua's Business plan is priced per seat with a minimum of 2 seats. Paying more for Lazur buys a different kind of help, not more dictation.
Here is the honest read. A single dictation app and a Mac assistant are not the same purchase. If you only need dictation, the cheaper annual plans look better on paper. If you want help with on-screen tasks, the higher price is the cost of that extra work.
Privacy differences that matter on a Mac
Privacy is where these five apps differ most. Ask three questions: where does the audio go, how long is it kept, and is it used for training? The answers below come from each company's privacy page or homepage.
Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer, are not stored, and are never used to train AI models.
Typeless processes audio in real time on cloud servers. Its policy says no voice recordings or screen context data are stored on its servers.
Wispr Flow transcribes in the cloud. Audio is deleted after transcription unless cloud storage is on. Training status depends on the setting you choose.
Superwhisper keeps audio on the device with local models. Cloud models process audio in memory. Server logs are kept 30 days.
Aqua Voice's Privacy Mode decides whether audio and transcripts are stored. With it off, they are stored with no fixed deletion period.

English speech input rate compared with keyboard typing in a 2016 study, not a test of these apps
If you handle client, medical or legal text, read each privacy page before you dictate anything sensitive. Policies change. The policy dates on these pages are Oct 8, 2026 for Superwhisper, Oct 13, 2026 for Typeless and Nov 4, 2026 for Aqua Voice.
Platforms: Mac only versus apps that run everywhere
If you use only a Mac, the platform list matters less. If your team uses Windows, iPhone or Android, it matters a lot. Here is what each app lists on its own site.
Lazur: macOS on Apple silicon and Intel. Windows is planned, not available.
Typeless: macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android.
Wispr Flow: Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Notetaker runs on Mac and Windows only.
Superwhisper: macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, according to its homepage.
Aqua Voice: macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.
Speed and accuracy claims: read them with care
Most apps on this page make speed or accuracy claims. Some come from the company. One comes from research. Here is what each one means.
Typeless says 220 wpm against 45 wpm for typing. Aqua says 97.4% key-term accuracy against 65.1% for Whisper Large v3. Both come from company material, and neither is an independent test. A 2016 study by Ruan and colleagues found English speech input ran 2.93 times faster than a keyboard, 153 against 52 words per minute. That study tested cloud speech recognition on an iPhone, not these apps.
The same study found speech left more uncorrected errors in the final text: 1.30% against 0.79% for typing. That matters if you send messages without rereading them. Speech saves time, but you still need to proofread. Test with your own words. Use the dictation accuracy checker on a sample, and the speaking vs typing test to compare your own speed.
Worked example: a 500-word email, typed and dictated
Take a 500-word email. At the 45 wpm typing rate Typeless cites for QWERTY typing, it takes about 11 minutes to type. At Typeless's stated 220 wpm dictation rate, it takes about 2.3 minutes to speak. That gap is the company's own math, so treat it as a best case.
Then add the fixing time. Fewer fixes keep more of the time gain. Typeless, Lazur, Aqua Voice and Superwhisper all offer a personal or custom dictionary, so names and jargon get fixed once. For Lazur, the same email is a different job. Hold fn to dictate it at the cursor. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask Lazur to read the thread on screen, then ask it to draft the reply out loud. Lazur does not click Send for you.
Mistakes people make when they switch dictation apps
Comparing list prices only. Check annual against monthly, and check whether a price is per user.
Assuming local means private for everything. Local models keep audio on the device, but check how history and logs are kept.
Treating a free plan as a free trial. Wispr Flow's free plan is capped at 2,000 words per week, so check how fast you reach the cap.
Testing with short phrases. Short tests flatter every app. Test with the messages and notes you write each day.
Forgetting macOS permissions. Dictation apps need microphone access. Check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone after you install one.
Skipping the privacy page. Policies change, so read the date on each page before you decide.
Next steps: test two apps in one week
Shortlist two apps. Pick one that fits your privacy rule and one that fits your platforms.
Start each free trial or free plan. Lazur's Pro trial lasts 3 days, and you can read the Lazur pricing page first.
Dictate the same passage in each app. Count the fixes you make after each one.
Read the privacy page for each app. For Wispr Flow, check the model training setting directly.
Compare the bill for the term you will use. Annual prices only apply if you stay past the trial.
Keep the app that needed the fewest fixes and fits your privacy rule.

Which Typeless alternative should you pick
Pick Typeless if you want the cleanest dictation across Mac, Windows, Linux and phones, and you accept cloud processing. Pick Wispr Flow if you want a free tier with a published word cap and dictation across platforms. Pick Superwhisper if audio must stay on your Mac and you can test local models.
Pick Aqua Voice if technical terms matter most and Privacy Mode suits your work. Pick Lazur if you want a Mac voice assistant that sees your screen, points, explains and speaks, and dictation is a bonus. Skip Lazur if you need Windows or a fully offline tool. If you are weighing Lazur against Typeless alone, read Lazur vs Typeless on Mac.
