Quick answer

  • Open the ••• button at the top of the page, then turn on Lock page.
  • A locked page is view-only for all members, and Locked shows in the breadcrumb.
  • To turn the lock off, click Locked in the breadcrumb and pick the option that fits who should edit.
  • Notion documents no keyboard shortcut for page lock, so skip the shortcuts you find in blog posts.
  • A full-page database has its own Lock database toggle. The data stays editable, but views and properties do not.

What you need

  • A Mac running a macOS version that Notion's requirements page lists for the desktop app
  • macOS 13 Ventura or later for Notion desktop 7.39, according to a secondary source
  • Access to edit the page, which some third-party guides say is needed (not confirmed by Notion)
  • The Notion desktop app or Notion in a browser, since Notion's help does not separate the two for locking

How to Lock a page in Notion on Mac in Notion on a Mac

  1. Open the page you want to lock

Open the page in the Notion desktop app on your Mac. Confirm the page title is the one you meant. The lock applies to the page you have open, so check the title before you click anything else.

  2. Find the ••• button

    ••• (top of the page)

Look at the top of the page for the ••• button. Click it to open the page menu. The menu holds the page options, including the lock toggle.

  3. Turn on Lock page

    •••Lock page

Find the Lock page toggle in the menu and switch it on. The page becomes view-only for all members. Notion's help article describes the toggle with these exact words.

Tip: If the toggle is not there, check your access to the page. Notion's help does not say which permission level it needs, so ask your workspace owner.

  4. Confirm the Locked label

    Breadcrumb (top of the page)

Look at the top breadcrumb. The word Locked appears next to the page name when the lock is on. If you don't see it, the lock is not active on this page yet.

  5. Lock a full-page database instead, if needed

    •••Lock database

For a full-page database, click ••• at the top right of the page and turn on Lock database. The data stays editable for everyone, but views and properties do not.

Tip: Anyone with editing access can switch this lock on or off, so agree on who manages it.

  6. Turn the lock off again

Locked (breadcrumb)Option that ends in for me

Click Locked in the breadcrumb. Choose the option that ends in for me to keep the page locked for everyone else. Choose the option that ends in for everyone to open the page to all members.

  7. Re-lock the page for yourself

Re-lock (next to the page name)

If you turned the lock off only for yourself, click Re-lock next to the page name when you finish. If you turned it off for everyone, turn Lock page back on from the ••• menu.

Tip: Re-lock as soon as you finish. Notion's help does not say whether a lock turned off for you resets when you leave the page.

What a locked page means in Notion

A lock is a setting on one page. When you turn it on, the page becomes view-only for all members. People can still open it and read it. They can't edit it until someone turns the lock off.

Locking is not the same as making a page private. Anyone who could see the page before can still see it. Think of the lock as a way to freeze final content, such as an approved spec or an agenda for a meeting that has already happened.

This matters when you share a page with a wider group. A locked page tells readers the text is settled, and it still lets them read every line.

Where the lock toggle sits on a Mac

Notion puts the page controls in the top bar. The ••• button sits at the top of the page, and the lock toggle lives in the menu that button opens. When the lock is on, the word Locked appears next to the page name in the breadcrumb.

Notion's help article for locking gives the menu and toggle names. It does not give Mac-specific menu paths or a shortcut. The steps in this guide use the names from that article, so match the words if your window looks different.

Notion's help does not list a web or desktop difference for locking, so the same steps should apply in both. If you switch between the two, the labels should stay the same.

Lock a full-page database instead

A full-page database has its own lock. Click ••• at the top right of the page, then turn on Lock database. Notion says everyone can still edit the data, but the views and properties stay fixed.

Notion's database help says anyone with editing access can turn that lock on or off. One person can lock a database, and another person can turn the lock off again. Agree on who manages database locks before you start.

  • Lock a page when the whole page should stop changing for members.
  • Lock a database when people still need to update the data but should not change the views or properties.
  • Before you choose, read the page title and check the breadcrumb. The item you lock should be the one you meant.

How to turn off a page lock in Notion

To turn the lock off, click Locked in the breadcrumb at the top of the page. Notion shows two options. One option ends in for me and keeps the page locked for everyone else. The other ends in for everyone and opens the page to all members.

If you chose the option for you only, the page stays editable for you and locked for everyone else. Click Re-lock next to the page name when you finish. If you chose the option for everyone, turn Lock page back on from the ••• menu.

Notion's help does not say whether a lock turned off only for you resets when you leave the page. A third-party snippet says it does, but I did not confirm that. Re-lock as soon as you finish, so you don't depend on that behavior.

Keyboard shortcut to lock a page on Mac

There is no official keyboard shortcut to lock a page in Notion. Notion's keyboard shortcut list has no entry for locking, and none for turning the lock off. Use the ••• menu instead.

Some guides online list ⌘ ⇧ E or ⌘ ⇧ L as lock shortcuts. The second combination is the one Notion's list uses for switching dark and light mode. I could not confirm a lock shortcut in any Notion source, so treat shortcuts from blogs as unverified.

Which plan and permissions you need

Notion's pricing page does not list page locking as a feature of any plan. The collaboration help article doesn't name a plan or permission level for the lock either. Notion's own docs cannot confirm which account you need.

Notion Pricing

macOS 13

Notion desktop beta adds faster tabs, needs macOS 13

The pricing page lists Free at $0, Plus at $10, and Business at $20, each per member per month. Enterprise uses custom pricing. Check the pricing page yourself before you assume a plan includes the lock.

Some third-party guides say you need a Can Edit or Full Access permission. I did not confirm that in Notion's docs. If the Lock page toggle is missing, check your access in the share settings, then ask your workspace owner. The sharing guide covers those permissions.

Page history if the content changes

A lock controls editing. It is not a backup plan. If text changes before you lock the page, or after someone turns the lock off, page history is the place to look.

How far back you can look depends on your plan. The pricing page lists 7 days of page history on Free, 30 days on Plus, and 90 days on Business. Enterprise is custom.

Check history for the last edits before you lock a final version. That way you know what the locked text says, and you know which earlier version to go back to if you need it.

Known problem: checkboxes in a locked database

One Notion Answers thread reports that turning on page lock also disabled the checkboxes in a weekly-plan database. The only answer has one vote. It says to edit the data in the underlying database, because the locked page is view-only.

I did not test this on a Mac, so treat it as a user report, not a confirmed bug. If your checkboxes stop working after you lock a page, test one row first. Then check whether the database is the one you meant to lock.

The workaround from that thread is to edit the source database instead of the locked page. It is a workaround from a community answer, not an official fix from Notion.

macOS version and desktop app requirements

Notion's official lock steps are not tied to a specific app version. Notion's releases page lists product releases numbered 3.x, with Notion 3.8 on October 13, 2026 as the latest one shown. Desktop builds use their own numbers, and that page does not list them.

A secondary source reports that Notion desktop 7.39, released October 15, 2026, needs macOS 13 Ventura or later. The same source says 7.38.1 was the last update to support macOS 12 Monterey. To check your version, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac.

Notion's desktop download page offers Universal, Apple Silicon, and Intel x64 builds. The Universal build runs on both chip types. The page links to a system requirements page instead of giving a minimum macOS version, so use that page for the final check.

For the full checklist, read how to check system requirements for Notion on Mac. If you still need to install the app, the install guide covers the download.

Common mistakes when locking a page in Notion

Many lock problems come from the wrong object or the wrong scope. Check these before you decide the lock is broken.

  • Locking a database when you meant the page, or the other way around. Read the page title and the ••• menu before you click.
  • Following a shortcut from a blog post. Notion's own shortcut list has no lock shortcut.
  • Turning the lock off for everyone when only you needed to edit. Choose the option that ends in for me.
  • Forgetting to re-lock. A page that stays editable keeps accepting changes until someone locks it again.
  • Expecting the lock to hide the page. A locked page is still visible to members, and it stays view-only.
  • Editing a locked page when the content lives in a source database. Edit the source database instead.

What to do after you lock a page

Locking works best as the last step in a review. Share the page with the people who need it first, then lock it so the text stays put. The sharing guide covers permissions and links.

If you lock the same kind of page often, build it once as a template. The template guide covers database templates on Mac, step by step.

Check the breadcrumb once after you lock the page. Locked should appear next to the page name. If it doesn't, open the ••• menu and check the Lock page toggle again.

Questions people ask

Is there a keyboard shortcut to lock a page in Notion on Mac?

Notion's keyboard shortcut list has no entry for locking a page, so there is no official shortcut. The list uses ⌘ ⇧ L for switching dark and light mode. Use the ••• menu and the Lock page toggle instead.

Can I lock a page the same way on the web and in the Mac app?

Notion's help article for locking does not list separate steps for web and desktop, and it has no Mac-specific paths. The menu names in this guide match that article, so the steps should carry over. If a label looks different in your version, match the same words.

Why can't I see the Lock page option?

Notion's help does not say which permission or plan the lock needs. Some third-party guides say you need edit or full access, but I could not confirm that in Notion's docs. Check your access to the page, then ask your workspace owner.

Does a locked page stay private?

No. Locking makes the page view-only for all members, and members can still read it. To control who can open the page at all, use the sharing settings instead of the lock.

Can I lock a full-page database and still let people update data?

Notion says everyone can still edit the data when a full-page database is locked, but the views and properties stay fixed. Anyone with editing access can turn the lock on or off, so agree on who manages it.

Why did my checkboxes stop working after I locked a page?

One Notion Answers thread reports this, and its only answer has one vote. The answer says to edit the underlying database, because the locked page is view-only. I did not test this on a Mac, so check one row first.

Which Notion plan do I need to lock a page?

Notion's pricing page does not list page locking as a feature of any plan, and the help article does not name a plan. The pricing page lists Plus at $10 and Business at $20 per member per month, with Enterprise on custom pricing.

Do I need the latest macOS to run the Notion desktop app?

A secondary source says Notion desktop 7.39 needs macOS 13 Ventura or later, and that 7.38.1 was the last update to support macOS 12 Monterey. Notion's download page links to a requirements page, so check that page first.
