Quick answer

  • Single link: open it in your browser, click ••• at the top right, choose More, then click Open in Mac app.
  • All links: in Notion on the web, go to Sidebar, the down arrow next to your workspace name, Settings, Preferences, then turn on Open links in desktop app.
  • Then, in the Mac app, make sure Open Notion links in browser is off.
  • Notion's help does not document a keyboard shortcut for this. Press ⌘R to refresh after updates.
  • If links still open in the browser, check device-level settings on your Mac.

What you need

  • Notion desktop app installed on your Mac
  • macOS 13 Ventura or later
  • A Notion account with access to the workspace
  • A web browser such as Safari or Chrome

How to Open Notion links in the Mac desktop app in Notion on a Mac

  1. Check your Mac and install the app

    Apple menuAbout This Mac

Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Confirm you run macOS 13 Ventura or later. If you do not, the desktop app will not run on this Mac, so use the browser for now.

Tip: The same window shows your processor, which you need if the installer rejects the download.

  2. Open Notion on the web

In Safari or Chrome, go to Notion on the web. Sign in to the same account and workspace you use in the Mac app.

Tip: The desktop app must already be installed before the setting below does anything.

  3. Open the workspace settings

SidebarDown arrow next to workspace nameSettingsPreferences

In the left sidebar, click the down arrow next to your workspace name. Choose Settings, then open Preferences.

  4. Turn on Open links in desktop app

    SettingsPreferencesOpen links in desktop app

Find the toggle called Open links in desktop app and turn it on. This sends Notion page links to the Mac app.

Tip: Labels differ slightly between Notion help pages. Look for the toggle that mentions the desktop app.

  5. Check the Mac app toggle

SidebarDown arrow next to workspace nameSettingsPreferencesOpen Notion links in browser

Open the Notion Mac app. Follow the same path to Settings and Preferences. Make sure Open Notion links in browser is off.

Tip: Turn this one on only when you want links to go to the browser.

  6. Test with one link

Click a Notion page link from a message or a document. It should open in the Mac app. If it opens in the browser, go to the troubleshooting section below.

Tip: Test with a link from outside Notion, such as a message, so you see the real behavior.

  7. Keep Notion up to date

    NotionCheck for Updates⌘R

Click Notion in the menu bar, then choose Check for Updates. Notion says the app updates automatically. Press ⌘R to refresh and see new features.

Tip: Reinstalling is rarely needed, according to Notion's help.

Notion links open in your browser by default. The Notion desktop app is a separate program on your Mac, and it does not take over those links by itself. You have two ways to change that. You can send one link to the app, or you can turn on a setting that sends every Notion page link there.

Pick the route that fits how you use Notion

If a Notion link reaches you now and then, use the single-link route. It takes a few clicks each time, and it changes no settings. If you open Notion links all day, set the web toggle once and leave it on.

Both routes need the same app. Install the Mac app first and sign in before you change anything. Notion's help says the desktop app must already be installed for the setting to work.

Notion documents these routes for the Mac app. Only ⌘R has a documented shortcut.
RouteWhat it doesWhere you startShortcut
Single linkOpens one page in the Mac appBrowser, then ••• at the top right, then MoreNone documented
Every linkSends all Notion page links to the appNotion on the web, Settings > PreferencesNone documented
RefreshLoads new features after an updateNotion menu > Check for Updates⌘R

This route suits a link a colleague sends in chat or email. Open the link in your browser first. The page loads as usual in Safari or Chrome. Then you hand it to the app from the ••• menu.

The ••• menu sits at the top right of the page. Notion's help says to open More, then click Open in Mac app. Notion's account settings page describes the same item a little differently. It says to scroll to the bottom of the menu. If you do not see More, scroll down the menu before you give up.

Here is a worked example. A teammate sends you a link to a project database. You click it, and it opens in your browser. You click •••, choose More, then Open in Mac app. The same page opens in Notion for Mac, and you keep working there.

This route does not change any setting. Other links keep opening the way they did before. If you want every link to open in the app, use the all-links route below.

This setting lives in two places. You turn it on in Notion on the web. Then you check the matching toggle in the Mac app. The web toggle sends links to the app. The Mac app toggle sends links to the browser. You want the first on and the second off.

Start in the browser, not in the app. The web toggle is called Open links in desktop app. Find it in the left sidebar. Click the down arrow next to your workspace name, choose Settings, then open Preferences.

Install the Mac app before you turn the toggle on. The help says the app must already be installed. If you skip that, the setting has no app to open links in.

Next, open the Mac app and check its own preferences. Use the same path. Make sure Open Notion links in browser is off. Turn it on only when you want links to go to the browser.

Test with one link from a message. If it opens in the app, you are done. If it still opens in the browser, read the troubleshooting section below. The fix is usually a device setting, not another Notion toggle.

Notion's help says device-level settings can override its own settings. That is the main reason a toggle seems to do nothing. The help page's tip for this is labeled Windows, so the Mac steps are not spelled out there.

Start with Notion. Confirm the web toggle is on and the Mac app toggle is off. Then check how your Mac handles web links. Change one thing at a time, and test one link after each change so you know what worked.

Be careful with third-party link tools. A tool that routes links can win over the Notion setting. Turn the tool off, test again, and turn it back on only if you need it.

Check your Mac and app version first

Notion's system requirements page lists macOS 13 or above for the desktop app. That is the floor. Older Macs can still run older builds, but they do not get the newest app.

Notion's desktop app 7.39, released 15 October 2026, requires macOS 13 Ventura or later. A secondary report says 7.38.1 was the last release for macOS 12 Monterey. Macs on macOS 12 keep working on it, but get no new features or security fixes.

To check your macOS version, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. The same window shows your processor. You need that if the installer says the app does not match your Mac.

The latest build I could confirm is 7.42.3, from Homebrew's Notion cask page. That page shows no date, so treat it as a snapshot. To see your own build, click Notion in the menu bar and choose Check for Updates.

Many people search for a shortcut here. Notion's help does not document one for opening links in the app. I also did not find a ⌥, ⌃, or ⇧ combination for it.

The one documented shortcut is ⌘R. Notion says to refresh with cmd or ctrl plus R to see new features. On a Mac, that means ⌘ and R.

Be wary of shortcut lists that promise a link key. Some come from old builds or from third-party tools. Test any shortcut in your own copy before you rely on it.

The menu route is short, so a shortcut adds little. Click •••, choose More, then click Open in Mac app. After a few tries, your hand knows the path.

Most problems come from a few habits. Check this list before you start over.

  • Turning on Open links in desktop app before the Mac app is installed.
  • Leaving Open Notion links in browser on in the Mac app, then wondering why links open in the browser.
  • Mixing up the two toggles. The web toggle sends links to the app. The Mac app toggle sends them to the browser.
  • Searching for a keyboard shortcut that Notion does not document.
  • Skipping Check for Updates when a feature seems missing.

Unofficial workarounds you may find online

Search results often lead to a notion:// trick. Change the https:// at the start of a Notion link to notion://, and the page can open in the native app. Thomas Frank's guide describes this. It also says Notion has no built-in way to copy a notion:// link.

The same guide suggests an Automator Quick Action, or a paid Alfred workflow. It names Choosy as the easiest option, at $10. Each of these is a third-party tool that you install on your own Mac.

Treat these as a last resort. The guide has no date, uses older menu names, and I did not test it on current macOS. Third-party tools are not vetted for security or compatibility. Start with Notion's own settings.

What changed in the Mac app recently

Notion's 20 January 2026 release notes include one Mac-specific line. It says Mac desktop is up +11% in performance. The notes give no baseline or metric, so the number shows direction, not size.

The 7.39 beta adds faster tab switching and uses less memory, according to adaptd.ai. You turn it on under Settings > Preferences > Desktop beta. It is opt-in, so your app does not change until you choose it.

Once links open in the app, the next question is what you do there. Lazur's Notion on Mac page covers voice help for pages, shortcuts, and drafts.

If you run product work in Notion, see Notion for product managers on Mac. It covers voice help, shortcuts, and PRD workflows in 2026.

Start with one link. If you like how it works, turn on the setting for every link and use it for a few days. Then you will know whether it fits your day.

Questions people ask

Is there a keyboard shortcut to open Notion links in the Mac app?

Notion's help does not document one. The only shortcut it lists for the desktop app is ⌘R, which refreshes the app to load new features. Use the ••• menu for one link, or the setting for every link.

Do I need the desktop app installed first?

Yes. Notion's help says the desktop app must already be installed before you turn on Open links in desktop app. Install it, sign in, then change the web setting.

Which macOS version does the Notion desktop app need?

macOS 13 Ventura or later, according to Notion's system requirements page. A secondary report says 7.38.1 was the last release for macOS 12 Monterey, and Macs on macOS 12 get no new features or security fixes after it.

Why does my link still open in Chrome or Safari?

Notion's help says device-level settings may override its settings. Check the Mac app toggle, then the web toggle, then how your Mac handles links. Change one thing at a time and test a link after each change.

How do I send a link back to the browser from the Mac app?

Go to Sidebar, the down arrow next to the workspace name, Settings, then Preferences. Turn on Open Notion links in browser. Notion says this setting sends links to the browser when it is on.

Will opening one link with More and Open in Mac app change my settings?

No. The single-link route does not change either toggle. Other links keep opening the way they did before, so the all-links setup is separate.

Can I use the notion:// trick instead?

You can, but it is unofficial. Changing https:// to notion:// can open a page in the native app. Thomas Frank's guide is undated and uses older menu names. Try Notion's own settings first.

Can Lazur open the link for me?

Lazur does not click for you. Hold ⌥ ⌘ and ask where Open in Mac app is. Lazur circles it on your screen and guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click.
