How to see Figma notifications on Mac: the menu bar icon, step by step

To see Figma notifications on Mac, open the Figma desktop app and click the Figma icon in the menu bar along the top of your screen. A red dot next to the icon means something new is waiting, and the feed lists the 50 most recent items for the account you are signed into.

Quick answer

  • Figma notifications live in the desktop app for Mac, not the browser, and show up in the menu bar.
  • A red dot next to the Figma icon means something new. Click the icon to open the feed.
  • The feed holds the 50 most recent notifications, for the account you are signed into.
  • If the icon is missing, check Figma > Preferences and the Show Figma in the Menu Bar option.
  • Stuck or doubled icons: restart the Mac, then use Help > Troubleshooting > Reset Figma and Restart.

What you need

  • Figma desktop app for Mac, not only the browser version
  • macOS 12 Monterey or later, according to Figma's guide
  • Show Figma in the Menu Bar turned on in Figma > Preferences
  • A Figma account signed in on the desktop app

How to See Figma notifications in the Mac menu bar in Figma on a Mac

  1. Open the Figma desktop app

    FinderApplicationsFigma

Start Figma from the Applications folder, Launchpad or the Dock. Notifications exist only in the desktop app, so this step matters more than any setting. If you only use Figma in Safari or Chrome, no menu bar icon will appear. Sign in with the account you want to check.

Tip: Figma's guide lists desktop notifications as a feature only the desktop app has.

  2. Find the Figma icon in the menu bar

    Menu barFigma icon

The menu bar runs along the top of the screen. Look for the Figma icon there. A red dot next to the icon means a new notification is waiting. If no icon appears at all, go to the Show Figma in the Menu Bar step.

  3. Click the icon to open the feed

    Menu barFigma icon

Click the icon once to open the panel. It holds up to 50 items, the most recent ones first. Read what you need, then move on to the next step if the list is not what you expected.

  4. Check which account the feed belongs to

    Account menu

The feed shows only the account you are signed into. If you added more than one Figma account, switch to the one you need inside Figma, then open the feed again. Items from your other accounts will not show up in the list.

  5. Open notification settings in Figma

    Account menuNotifications

Click your account menu in the top-left corner of the file browser. Select the Notifications tab. Changes here affect what Figma sends you. The menu bar icon itself is controlled in Figma > Preferences.

  6. Confirm the menu bar icon is turned on

FigmaPreferencesShow Figma in the Menu Bar

If the icon is missing, open Figma > Preferences. Make sure Show Figma in the Menu Bar is selected. Community support says this option must stay on for notifications, so leave it on if you rely on the feed.

Tip: Clearing the box hides the icon. Select it again to bring the icon back.

  7. Restart your Mac if two icons appear

    Apple menuRestart

After a macOS update, you may see two Figma icons. A black icon opens a Starred and Recent menu, and a white outline opens All notifications. In one forum report, on macOS 27.0 with Figma desktop 126.8.18, a restart removed the extra icon. No official fix is confirmed.

  8. Reset the Figma cache from the Help menu

    HelpTroubleshootingReset Figma and Restart

Click Help in the Mac menu bar, not inside Figma. Choose Troubleshooting, then Reset Figma and Restart. Figma restarts after the reset. Community posts call this option Clear Cache and Restart, so the label may differ by version.

Tip: If the exact label is missing, look for a cache option under Troubleshooting.

  9. Use browser notifications in the web app

    File browserNotifications iconSettingsEnable browser notifications

If you work in Figma in a browser, go to the file browser and click the Notifications icon at the top. Choose Settings, then click Enable browser notifications. Make sure your browser is allowed to send notifications in your Mac's settings.

Tip: Browser alerts are a separate feature. They do not put a feed in the menu bar.

Figma's menu bar notifications belong to the desktop app. If you only read Figma in a browser tab, you will not find a menu bar icon at all. Figma's guide lists desktop notifications among the features that only the desktop app has, next to plugin development, split tab view and multiple windows.

Start in the desktop app, not a browser tab

The desktop app on macOS requires macOS 12 Monterey, released in October 2021, or later. Figma's guide also says support for previous desktop app versions ends six months after a release. An older install may no longer be supported, so update before you chase a notification bug.

Otherwise the desktop app matches the browser version, so you can keep working the same way. The difference is the menu bar. Only the desktop app gives you that feed, which is why notifications seem to vanish when you switch to the browser.

Find the icon and read the red dot

The icon sits in the menu bar along the top of your screen. Figma's help article says desktop notifications are viewed from the Mac menu bar, but the text cuts off before it describes the icon. A red dot next to the icon means a new notification is waiting. Open the feed to see what the dot refers to.

Icon styles can differ between setups. One Figma Community thread from a Mac on macOS 27.0 with Figma desktop 126.8.18 reports two icons. The black icon opened a Starred and Recent menu, and the white outline opened the All notifications panel. A restart removed the extra icon for that reporter, and no official fix is confirmed.

What the notifications feed shows you

The notifications panel displays the 50 most recent notifications. Anything older than that is not in the list. The feed covers only the account you are signed into, and Figma's help article says this applies when you add multiple accounts to the desktop app.

Say you have a personal Figma account and a work account on the same Mac. Only the one you are signed into fills the feed. If an alert seems missing, check which account is active before you blame the app.

Change notification settings inside Figma

Open the account menu in the top-left corner of the file browser and select the Notifications tab. Figma's help article uses this path for in-app settings. Desktop notifications are on by default, so you only need this tab to change what reaches you.

Email is a separate switch. Figma's help article says disabling email notifications does not disable notifications in Figma. If you want fewer alerts on your Mac, turning off email alone will not do it.

Hide the menu bar icon, or bring it back

Choose Figma > Preferences while the desktop app is open. Clear Show Figma in the Menu Bar to hide the icon. Select the option again to bring it back. Figma's help article describes clearing it as the way to turn the icon off.

Community support says the option must stay on for notifications. In practice, keep it on if you read alerts from the menu bar. Turn it off only if you never use that feed and want the space back.

Use browser notifications in the web app

The web app does not use the menu bar. In the file browser, click the Notifications icon at the top, choose Settings, then click Enable browser notifications. Your browser also needs permission. Check that notifications are allowed for that browser in your Mac's notification settings.

Fix an icon that is missing, doubled or stuck

Work through the cheap fixes first. Restarting the Mac removed a duplicate icon for one reporter. Next, reset the cache from the Help menu, since Figma's help article covers clearing the desktop app cache as its own topic. Force quitting and deleting the app folder is the last step, for an app that will not respond.

Mistakes that make notifications seem missing

  • Looking for the feed in a browser tab, where the menu bar icon does not exist.
  • Clearing Show Figma in the Menu Bar, then wondering why the icon disappeared.
  • Turning off email notifications and expecting menu bar alerts to stop. The two settings are separate.
  • Missing an alert because you are signed into a different account.
  • Searching for a keyboard shortcut that Figma does not document.

Keyboard shortcuts for notifications, and what is not documented

Figma's keyboard shortcut page lists no shortcut for notifications, the notifications feed, the menu bar, Preferences or the Help menu. It does not use the ⌘ ⌥ ⌃ ⇧ symbols for those actions either. Treat any third-party list that gives you a shortcut for them with suspicion. Click the icon with your mouse or trackpad instead. For the shortcuts Figma does document, see how to show the keyboard shortcuts panel in Figma.

Next steps when nothing works

Check that your Mac runs macOS 12 or later, and that the Figma desktop app is current. If a restart and a cache reset do not fix the menu bar feed, send a report through the support request form linked from Figma's home page. Include your macOS version, your Figma desktop version and a short description of what you see in the menu bar.

If it does not work

No Figma icon in the menu bar
Open Figma > Preferences and select Show Figma in the Menu Bar. If you only use the browser, no icon appears, so open the desktop app instead.
Two Figma icons after a macOS update
Restart the Mac. One user on macOS 27.0 said this removed the extra icon. Figma has not confirmed a permanent fix, so check the Community thread for updates.
The feed looks empty or out of date
Confirm you are signed into the right account. Then reset the cache from Help > Troubleshooting > Reset Figma and Restart.
Figma will not respond
Force quit Figma. Only if the reset fails, open Terminal and run rm -rf "$HOME/Library/Application Support/Figma", then relaunch. Figma's help gives this step for an unresponsive app.
Browser alerts do not arrive
Turn on Enable browser notifications in the web app's Settings, then allow your browser in your Mac's notification settings.
Menu bar feed missing on an old install
Check that your Mac runs macOS 12 or later. Figma says previous desktop versions lose support six months after a release, so update the app.

Questions people ask

Can I see Figma notifications in a browser on Mac?

Yes, but not in the menu bar. The web app has a Notifications icon at the top of the file browser, and you can turn on browser notifications from its Settings. The menu bar feed exists only in the desktop app.

Why is there no Figma icon in my menu bar?

The usual causes are that the option is off or that you only use Figma in a browser. Open Figma > Preferences and make sure Show Figma in the Menu Bar is selected. Then open the desktop app again.

Does turning off email notifications stop the menu bar alerts?

No. Figma's help article says disabling email notifications does not disable notifications in Figma. To hide the icon, use the menu bar option in Preferences, and expect that to hide the feed too.

What is the keyboard shortcut for Figma notifications?

None is documented. Figma's keyboard shortcut page lists no shortcut for notifications, the feed, the menu bar, Preferences or the Help menu. Click the icon with your mouse or trackpad.

How many notifications does the Figma feed keep?

The notifications panel displays the 50 most recent notifications. Older items drop out of the list, so act on anything important when you first see it.

Which macOS version do I need for Figma notifications?

Figma's guide says the desktop app needs macOS 12 Monterey or later. One community reply said macOS 11 or later, but the official guide is the safer reference.

Why are there two Figma icons in my menu bar?

A Community thread from a macOS 27.0 Mac reports a black icon that opens Starred and Recent, and a white outline that opens All notifications. A restart removed the extra icon for that reporter. No official fix is confirmed.

Do I need to allow Figma in System Settings for desktop notifications?

Figma staff have said the desktop app never asks for macOS notification permission, so there is nothing to enable there. Browser notifications work differently, and you do need to allow your browser.
