Quick answer

  • Click into the page body, not the title, then type / to open Notion's block menu.
  • Keep typing after the slash to filter the list, for example /todo for a checkbox.
  • Press esc to close the menu without choosing anything.
  • Select blocks and press ⌘ / to change, edit, duplicate, or move them.
  • The desktop app needs macOS 13 or later. If / does nothing, check the title first.

What you need

  • Notion desktop app for Mac, or the Notion web app
  • macOS 13 or later for the desktop app
  • Edit access to the page

How to Use slash commands in Notion on Mac in Notion on a Mac

  1. Open the page you want to edit

    ⌘ P

Open the Notion desktop app and go to the page. If you need to find a page fast, press ⌘ P, type part of its name, and choose it from the results.

  2. Click into the page body

Click the empty space under the title, or click an existing line of text. Slash commands work in the body of the page, not in the title.

Tip: If the cursor is still in the title, typing / will do nothing.

  3. Type a slash

    /

Type / in a text line. Notion opens the block menu at your cursor. This is the list Notion's help calls the slash command.

  4. Scan the six groups

The menu groups options as Basic, In-line, Media, Embeds, Database, and Advanced blocks. Scroll the list to browse, or skip this step and type a name instead.

  5. Filter by typing a name

Type letters after the slash to narrow the list. Type todo and the menu shrinks to the to-do option. Click it, and a checkbox appears at the cursor.

Tip: Two or three letters are often enough to find the block you want.

  6. Close the menu without choosing

    esc

Press esc to clear the slash menu. Nothing is inserted, and you can keep writing.

  7. Change an existing block with /turn

Click at the start or end of a block you already wrote. Type /turn and pick the new block type from the list.

  8. Act on selected blocks with ⌘ /

    ⌘ /

Select one or more blocks, then press ⌘ /. The block menu opens for the selection, where you can change, edit, duplicate, or move the blocks.

  9. Duplicate blocks

    ⌘ D

Select the blocks and press ⌘ D to copy them. Or type /duplicate in a single block to copy that block.

  10. Set the block type with a number

    ⌘⌥ 0 to 9

    Put your cursor in a block and press ⌘ ⌥ with a number. ⌘ ⌥ 1 makes a heading, ⌘ ⌥ 5 makes a bulleted list, and ⌘ ⌥ 7 makes a toggle.

  11. Check for Notion updates

    NotionCheck for Updates⌘ R

Click Notion in the menu bar, then choose Check for Updates. After the update installs, press ⌘ R to refresh Notion and load the new features.

  12. Test the keyboard if / still fails

Open TextEdit and type a slash. If the slash does not appear there either, the problem is likely your keyboard setup rather than Notion.

What a slash command does in Notion

A slash command is a short shortcut that opens Notion's block menu. A block is one piece of a page, such as a paragraph, a heading, a to-do item, or a table. Instead of hunting through toolbars, you type a slash and pick the block you need. Notion's help center calls this the slash command and describes it as a fast way to add content to any page.

The slash works in the body of a page. It does not work in the page title. Notion creates blocks in the body only, which is why the title is the first place to check when the menu won't open.

Before you start: check macOS and your Notion version

The Notion desktop app needs macOS 13 or later. Notion's system requirements page says so, and the Homebrew listing for Notion says the same. Homebrew showed version 7.42.3 when checked on 2026-11-07. Homebrew is a third-party mirror, so treat that number as a hint, not an official release note.

To update, click Notion in the menu bar, then choose Check for Updates. Once it installs, press ⌘ R to refresh Notion and load new features. Notion's 3.6 release on July 1, 2026 added External Agents, HTML blocks, and MCP connections. It did not change the slash menu or the Mac shortcuts, so the steps in this guide still hold.

  • The Notion desktop app is open and up to date.
  • Your Mac runs macOS 13 or later.
  • You have edit access to the page you want to change.

The block menu and its six groups

When you type /, Notion shows clusters of block options. The block basics guide sorts them into six groups: Basic, In-line, Media, Embeds, Database, and Advanced blocks. The guide does not give the menu a formal name. You may see it called the slash menu, the block menu, or the slash command. They all mean the same list.

You do not need to know which group holds each block. Type two or three letters after the slash and the list narrows fast. The groups help when you browse, but typing is quicker once you know the name of the block you want.

Filter the slash menu by typing

Typing after the slash is where the menu earns its place. Say you want a checklist. Type / and then todo. The menu shrinks to the to-do option. Click it, and a checkbox appears at your cursor. The official block basics guide uses this exact example, /todo in the body of a page.

Three more examples cover most daily use. Type /turn at the start or end of a block to change what kind of block it is. Type /duplicate to copy the block you are in. Type /todo in the middle of meeting notes when an action item shows up. Each one keeps your hands on the keyboard.

Change, move, and duplicate blocks with ⌘ /

The ⌘ / shortcut works on blocks you have already written. Select one block or several, then press ⌘ /. The block menu opens for the selection. Notion's keyboard shortcuts page says it can change, edit, duplicate, or move one or more selected blocks. Use it to turn a paragraph into a toggle without retyping the words.

Duplication has two routes. Select blocks and press ⌘ D to copy them. Or put your cursor in one block and type /duplicate to copy only that block. The ⌘ D route suits a selection. The slash route suits a single block you are already typing in.

Mac shortcuts that pair with slash commands

Slash commands handle the content. Keyboard shortcuts handle the moving around. Press ⌘ P or ⌘ K to open search and jump to a recent page. Press ⌘ F to search inside the page you are on. Press ⌘ [ and ⌘ ] to go back and forward, the same way you move through a browser.

Esc is the quiet one. It clears the slash menu, so you can back out when you type a slash by accident. Stray slashes happen when you paste a web address or type a fraction. Press esc, then keep writing.

The shortcuts page says cmd means Command on Mac and Control on Windows and Linux. If you switch between a Mac and a Windows machine, the same action uses a different key on each. Check the key before you assume a shortcut is broken.

Why the slash menu does nothing on your Mac

Most reports come from three causes. The slash is in the title, the keyboard setup is off, or the app is out of date. Check the title first, because it causes most of the problems. Notion's community answers say blocks can't be created in titles, so a slash there does nothing.

A 2024 Notion Answers thread says the / command cannot be turned off. A missing menu usually means the slash is in the wrong place. That thread is a community answer, not official Notion documentation, so use it as a checklist rather than a promise.

To test your keyboard, open TextEdit and type a slash. If the slash does not show up there either, the problem sits in your keyboard setup, not in Notion. Then update Notion and macOS to the latest versions your Mac supports.

Command Search and shortcut conflicts

The Notion desktop app has its own search window called Command Search. You can open it from a keyboard shortcut or from the Mac menu bar. Its menu bar icon and shortcut can be changed or turned off in Preferences. To reach Preferences, click Settings in the sidebar.

A Figma community thread reports a conflict. Notion's command search shortcut, cmd + shift + K in that thread, opened the Notion search window while Notion ran in the background. Commenters suggested turning Command Search off or changing its shortcut in Notion's settings. If another app's shortcut suddenly opens Notion, check this first.

Is the slash menu different in the web app?

Notion's desktop help lists features that only exist on desktop. Those include tabs with hover previews, Command Search outside the app, push notifications, and the desktop beta. The page does not describe a different slash menu on Mac. The steps here should match the web app, but Notion's help does not confirm that, so compare the two if they look different.

Where a voice helper fits, and where it stops

Lazur is a voice assistant for the Mac. Hold ⌥ ⌘, which is Option and Command together, and ask about anything on screen. Lazur answers out loud. Ask where something is, and it draws a circle and a label around it. Ask how to do something, and it guides you one click at a time, waiting for each click.

Lazur does not type the slash or pick the block for you. You stay in charge of the keyboard and the mouse. Lazur listens and looks at the screen only while you hold the shortcut. Audio and the screenshot go to AI providers to answer you and are not stored. You can start on the download page, which includes a 3-day Pro trial with no credit card.

Common mistakes with slash commands

The biggest mistake is typing in the title. The second is typing /turn in the middle of a sentence. Notion's guide describes /turn at the start or end of a block, so keep it there. The third is trying to learn all six groups before you start. Learn /todo, /turn, and ⌘ / first, then add the rest as you need them.

  • Typing in the page title, where blocks can't be created.
  • Putting /turn in the middle of a sentence instead of at the start or end of a block.
  • Memorizing every group before typing a single command.
  • Leaving a stray slash in the text instead of pressing esc.

A practice routine for your first week

Practice on a scratch page, not a live project. Make a page called Slash practice. Type / and add a to-do with /todo, then a heading with ⌘ ⌥ 1, then a toggle with ⌘ ⌥ 7. Select the three blocks, press ⌘ D, and check that the copies look right. One short session covers most of this guide.

Repeat the routine on a real page the next day. Notice which commands you reach for, and keep those in memory. The menu rewards repetition. A few commands used often beat many used once.

Keep going with more Notion how-tos

Once slash commands feel natural, try the next block types. The callout guide and the toggle guide build on the same menu. If you are setting up a new Mac, the install guide and the system requirements check cover the first steps.

If it does not work

Typing / does nothing
Move the cursor into the page body, not the title. Click a text line and type the slash again. A 2024 community answer says the / command can't be turned off, so the slash is usually in the wrong place.
A shortcut in another app opens Notion's search
This can be Command Search. Open Settings in the sidebar, then Preferences, and turn off Command Search or change its shortcut. A Figma forum thread reports cmd + shift + K as the conflict.
The Mac is too old for the Notion app
The desktop app requires macOS 13 or later. Check your version under the Apple menu, in About This Mac, before you install.
The menu still fails after updating
Click Notion in the menu bar, choose Check for Updates, then press ⌘ R. Test the keyboard in TextEdit, and update macOS to the latest version your Mac supports.

Questions people ask

Why won't the slash command work in my Notion page title?

Notion creates blocks in the body of a page, not in the title. Click the empty space under the title, or into an existing line of text, and type the slash again.

Which Mac do I need for the Notion slash command?

The Notion desktop app needs macOS 13 or later, according to Notion's system requirements page. The Homebrew listing for Notion also requires macOS 13 or later.

Is the slash menu the same in the web app and the Mac app?

Notion's desktop help does not describe a different slash menu on Mac. Notion's 3.6 release notes do not mention the slash menu either. Compare the two if your menus look different, because Notion's help does not confirm a gap.

Can I turn off the slash command?

A 2024 Notion Answers thread says the / command cannot be turned off. Treat that as a community answer, not official documentation. If the menu is missing, check where your cursor is first.

What is the fastest way to change a block type on Mac?

Use the number shortcuts. ⌘ ⌥ 1 to 3 make headings, ⌘ ⌥ 4 makes a to-do, and ⌘ ⌥ 5 makes a bulleted list. For a block you already wrote, type /turn at its start or end.

Why does Notion's search open when I press a shortcut in another app?

Command Search can use a shortcut that conflicts with other apps. Open Settings in the sidebar, then Preferences, to change or turn it off. A Figma forum thread reports cmd + shift + K as one conflict.

Can Lazur type the slash command or choose the block for me?

No. Lazur points at things, explains them, and guides you one click at a time. You type the slash and choose the block yourself.
