How to zoom in and out in Figma on Mac: shortcuts, trackpad and mouse steps
In Figma on Mac, hold ⌘ and press + to zoom in, then hold ⌘ and press minus to zoom out. On a trackpad, spread two fingers apart to zoom in, pinch them together to zoom out, and press ⇧ 1 to fit the whole canvas on screen.

Quick answer
- Hold ⌘ and press + to zoom in, then hold ⌘ and press minus to zoom out.
- On a trackpad, spread two fingers to zoom in and pinch to zoom out.
- ⇧ 1 zooms to fit the whole canvas. ⇧ 2 zooms to the layer you have selected.
- Figma's help pages list two key sets for zoom, so test which one your copy uses.
- The interface scale setting changes the toolbar and sidebars, not the canvas.
What you need
- Figma desktop app for macOS
- A design file open on the canvas
- A trackpad, Apple's mouse or a mouse with a scroll wheel
- Access to Figma Settings for the scroll wheel option
How to Zoom in and out on the Figma canvas in Figma on a Mac
Open the file and click the canvas
Open a design file in the Figma desktop app. Click an empty part of the canvas. If you are typing in a text layer, the zoom keys may type instead, so click away first.
Zoom in with Command and plus
⌘
Hold ⌘ and press +. On a US keyboard the plus sign uses Shift, so press ⌘, ⇧ and the equals key together. Check the canvas after each press to see how far it moved.
Tip: If nothing happens, try the Shift set in the next step.
Zoom out with Command and minus
⌘ minus
Hold ⌘ and press minus, the key next to 0 on the top row. Keep pressing to see more of the file around your frame.
Try the Shift set if Command does nothing
⇧or⇧ minus
Press ⇧ and + to zoom in, or ⇧ and minus to zoom out. Figma's zoom options article lists these keys. Use whichever set works in your copy.
Zoom to fit the whole canvas
⇧ 1
Press ⇧ 1. Everything on the canvas fits in the window. Use it when you lose track of where your layers are.
Zoom to a selected layer
⇧ 2
Click a layer or frame to select it. Press ⇧ 2 to zoom to the selection. Click an empty area of the canvas to clear the selection.
Zoom with a trackpad or Apple's mouse
Spread two fingers apart to zoom in and pinch them together to zoom out. On Apple's mouse with a touch surface, Figma's article says a one-finger double-tap zooms in, and the same gesture takes you back out.
Zoom with the wheel while holding Command
⌘ and scroll
Hold ⌘ and scroll the mouse wheel. Scroll up to zoom in and down to zoom out.
Turn off scroll wheel zoom in Settings
Click Figma in the menu bar, then choose Settings. Uncheck Use Scroll Wheel Zoom and close the window. Scroll the wheel to check that it now scrolls.
Tip: This route comes from a community reply, not a help article. Check the Settings window if your labels differ.
Fix shortcuts on a non-US keyboard layout
If the keys do nothing, your layout may not be US QWERTY. Open Preferences, then Keyboard layout, and pick your layout. Choose Generic to restore the default shortcuts.
Tip: Figma's layout article says the change applies to your whole account.
Zoom in and out with the keyboard on Mac
The keyboard is the fastest way to zoom on the Figma canvas. Hold Command (⌘), then press + to zoom in. Hold Command again and press minus to zoom out. Figma's keyboard help article gives this pair for Mac. On Windows the same pair uses Ctrl.
The plus sign causes the most trouble. On a US keyboard, + sits on the equals key and needs Shift. So the physical keys for zoom in are Command, Shift and the equals key. The minus key sits on the top row next to 0, and it needs no Shift. If your first press does nothing, check the keys before you assume the shortcut is broken.
- Zoom in: hold ⌘, then press + (Shift and the equals key on a US keyboard)
- Zoom out: hold ⌘, then press minus (the key next to 0)
- Test first: open a blank file and press each pair once

Why Figma's help pages list two sets of zoom keys
Figma has two official pages that cover zoom, and they do not fully match. The keyboard article says to hold Command on Mac and press + or minus. The zoom options article lists Shift with + to zoom in and Shift with minus to zoom out. It also lists Shift 1 for zoom to fit and Shift 2 for zoom to selection.
The accessibility article repeats the Shift set. It also says Command or Control with + or minus changes the zoom. Two pages, two answers, so the Mac app is the final judge.
This guide did not confirm either set in the Mac app. Your version may accept one set, both, or only one. Testing takes a few presses, so do it before you build a habit around one pair. The rest of this page starts with the Command set, then falls back to the Shift set.
Zoom to fit and zoom to selection with ⇧ 1 and ⇧ 2
Zoom to fit is ⇧ 1. Figma's zoom options article lists it this way. The view widens until everything on the canvas fits in the window. Use it when you lose track of where your layers sit.
Zoom to selection is ⇧ 2. Select a layer or a frame first, then press ⇧ 2. The canvas zooms to that selection. Click an empty area when you want to clear the selection again.
Some third-party cheat sheets list ⌘ ⇧ H for zoom to fit. Figma's own article says ⇧ 1, so start there. For 100 percent, this guide did not find a confirmed official key. Some sites suggest ⇧ 0 or ⌘ 0. Test those before you rely on them.
| Action | Mac keys | Where Figma lists it |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom in | ⌘ and + | Keyboard article |
| Zoom out | ⌘ and minus | Keyboard article |
| Zoom in, Shift set | ⇧ and + | Zoom options article |
| Zoom out, Shift set | ⇧ and minus | Zoom options article |
| Zoom to fit | ⇧ 1 | Zoom options article |
| Zoom to selection | ⇧ 2 | Zoom options article |
| Zoom to 100 percent | Not confirmed | No official key found |
Zoom with a trackpad or Apple's mouse
A trackpad is the most natural way to zoom on a MacBook. Spread two fingers apart to zoom in, and pinch them together to zoom out. Figma's zoom options article gives the same gestures. They need no modifier key, so your hands stay on the trackpad.
Apple's mouse with a touch surface works differently. Figma's article says a one-finger double-tap zooms in, and the same gesture takes you back out. Use it for a quick look at a wider area. For big jumps, keys are usually faster. For small adjustments, the trackpad gives you more control.
Zoom with the mouse wheel, and how to turn it off
With a regular mouse, hold ⌘ and scroll the wheel. Scroll up to zoom in and down to zoom out. Figma's article lists this pattern for Mac with Command, and for Windows with Ctrl.
The wheel can also zoom when you only wanted to scroll. Figma has a setting called Use Scroll Wheel Zoom for that case. In the desktop app, a community reply gives this route: click Figma in the menu bar, choose Settings, then uncheck Use Scroll Wheel Zoom.
That route comes from a reply by Figma community support in January 2025, not from a help article. If your labels look different, check the Settings window for a similar option. The browser version uses another route: File, then the Figma logo, then Preference.
Interface scale is not canvas zoom
The interface scale setting makes Figma's toolbar and left and right sidebars bigger or smaller. It does not change the canvas. If the canvas looks the same after you change it, that is expected. For canvas zoom, use the keys or gestures above. In a browser, use the browser's own zoom instead.
Why shortcuts do nothing on a non-US keyboard
Figma's default shortcuts assume a US QWERTY layout. If your Mac uses another layout, the keys in this guide may not match the keys under your fingers. Figma's keyboard layout article says to click the bottom-right corner of the window, choose Keyboard shortcuts, then open the Layout tab.
The main menu route is Preferences, then Keyboard layout. The change applies to your whole account, not one file. Choose Generic to restore the default shortcuts. Check this first if none of the key pairs in this guide respond.
A worked example for checking spacing
Say you are building a login card. You want to check the gap between the button and the text field. Select the button and press ⇧ 2. The canvas zooms to that button, so you can judge its edges and padding up close.
Next, click an empty area to clear the selection and press ⇧ 1. The whole card and the screen around it come into view. If the card looks small, press ⌘ + once and check again. Last, pinch on the trackpad to step back and check that the card sits centered.
A second example: checking a long screen flow
Say your file holds a sign-up flow of several screens in a row. Each screen is a frame, and the frames sit left to right. Press ⇧ 1 to see the whole row. The screens look tiny at that size, so you cannot read the labels yet.
Click a middle frame, then press ⇧ 2. Figma zooms to that screen, and the labels become readable. Check the headline, the button and the error text. Then press ⇧ 1 again to return to the overview before you move to the next frame.
If you want a middle view, hold ⌘ and press minus from the selected frame. Repeat it until the neighboring screens show at the edges. That view lets you compare spacing across screens without losing your place.
Common mistakes when zooming in Figma on Mac
- Pressing zoom keys while you type in a text layer. Click an empty area of the canvas first, then zoom.
- Leaving scroll wheel zoom on when you only want to scroll. Turn it off in Settings.
- Changing interface scale and expecting the canvas to grow. Only the toolbar and sidebars move.
- Forgetting Shift on a US keyboard. The plus sign needs it.
- Expecting ⇧ 2 to work with nothing selected. It zooms to a selection, so select a layer or frame first.
- Trusting a cheat sheet for zoom to 100 percent. Figma's pages did not confirm a key in this check.

What this guide could not confirm
Figma's help pages do not list an app version number or a minimum macOS version for the desktop app. The latest macOS release note this guide checked, dated November 6, 2026, covers AI select-area changes. It does not mention zoom or shortcuts.
Write down your app version when you test. Then you can compare it with the help pages later, if the zoom keys change.
Next steps once zoom feels natural
Once zoom feels normal, the next skill worth learning is spacing that holds up when content changes. The auto layout guide covers that on Mac. The component guide is the next step if you reuse the same button or card.
If you share a file for review, the view access guide explains link roles and what viewers can copy. Zoom matters there too, because reviewers often need to check the detail of one frame.

If it does not work
- Pressing ⌘ and + does nothing
- Try ⇧ and + from Figma's zoom options article. Then check your keyboard layout under Preferences, then Keyboard layout.
- The mouse wheel zooms when you only want to scroll
- Open Figma, then Settings, and uncheck Use Scroll Wheel Zoom. One forum user said the right-click toggle did nothing, so use the Settings window.
- A cheat sheet says ⌘ ⇧ H fits the canvas
- Figma's zoom options article says ⇧ 1 is zoom to fit. Test that key first, since cheat sheets can be out of date.
- The toolbar got bigger but the canvas did not
- Interface scale changes only the toolbar and sidebars. Use the keys or gestures to change the canvas zoom.
- Shift 2 does nothing
- Select a layer or frame first, then press ⇧ 2 again.
- Shortcuts seem to point at other keys
- Your keyboard layout may not be US QWERTY. Choose your layout under Preferences, then Keyboard layout, or choose Generic for the defaults.

Questions people ask
What is the shortcut to zoom in on Figma on Mac?
Hold Command (⌘) and press +. On a US keyboard the plus sign needs Shift, so the physical keys are ⌘, ⇧ and the equals key. If that does nothing, try ⇧ and + from Figma's zoom options article.
What is the shortcut to zoom out in Figma on Mac?
Hold Command (⌘) and press minus, the key next to 0. Figma's zoom options article also lists Shift with minus. Test both in your copy, since the help pages list both.
How do I zoom to fit everything in Figma on Mac?
Press ⇧ 1. Figma's zoom options article lists it as zoom to fit. A third-party cheat sheet lists ⌘ ⇧ H instead, so test ⇧ 1 first.
How do I zoom to 100 percent in Figma on Mac?
This guide did not find a confirmed official key for 100 percent. Some third-party sites suggest ⇧ 0 or ⌘ 0. Test those on your own copy before you rely on them.
Why does my mouse wheel zoom instead of scrolling?
Figma has a setting called Use Scroll Wheel Zoom. In the desktop app, click Figma in the menu bar, choose Settings, and uncheck that option. The route comes from a January 2025 community reply.
Does changing the interface scale also zoom the canvas?
No. In the desktop app, interface scale resizes the toolbar and sidebars. Canvas zoom uses the keys or gestures in this guide.
Can I zoom with a trackpad without any keys?
Yes. Spread two fingers apart to zoom in and pinch them together to zoom out, according to Figma's zoom options article. Apple's mouse with a touch surface uses a one-finger double-tap.
